The Best Restaurants in Seattle's University District - Eater Seattle

"Thanh Vi is among a number of Vietnamese restaurants on the Ave,but it stands out for options not available at the others, like banh xeo (Vietnamese crepes) and tom nuong (charbroiled shrimp) served with spring-roll wrappers, vermicelli, and vegetables to make DIY rolls on a tray. The banh xeo, made with rice flour, coconut cream, and turmeric, has a wonderfully crisp crust and soft, airy interior and is studded with pieces of shrimp, filled with bean sprouts, and served with sprigs of cilantro and basil." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart, Matthew Lombardi, Nicole Adlman, Mark DeJoy

Google
Insane portion, beautiful presentation, and the taste reminds me of home. How can I explain not too much and not too little seasoning? Oh right… PERFECT seasoning for the food. Very flavorful and still showcases the meal very well.

Google
i got the chicken pho. it was amazing, huge portion, so many aromatics in the broth, lots of chicken thigh too. there was one guy cooking & serving and he was killin it. prices are okay, a little cheaper than other spots in the area. will be back!

Kitty Marsh

Google
Although the place is nothing fancy but ohemgee! My pictures do not do justice to how wondeful the food is! The food is really good! The servings are also very generous, staff is very nice and always attentive to your needs (like drinking water refills), and really good price! I will definitely be back to try other things on the menu!

Google
I got the bun Bo hue. Overall flavor was decent. I appreciated the amount of protein they put in the bowl. Service was spectacular. The workers are very attentive and patient. Atmosphere is quite peaceful. Would recommend to others if you want something quick and filling to eat.

Google
One of the best Vietnamese restaurants on the Ave. I eat lunch here, and the food is always hot, tasty, and quick. The prices are extremely reasonable and even could be considered cheap. The service and staff are great, they make you feel welcome and taken care of. One time they didn't have an egg for my dish, I was expecting a slight discount, but they ended up giving me a 50% discount. I would consider myself a regular customer due to their consistent quality and service. Try the royal plate, or the pho!

Google
I sometimes visit this place, and tried various menu. It is always great, and Vanmi is the best! Full of meats, lots of sources are given, fast, clean, full of flavor!!! And it has a large size. Very big size!! I highly recommend this menu. You can remove cilantro if you say, and meat has a fire flavor as well.

Google
Came in on a Sunday afternoon. For two we ordered and shared a large #12 pho which had a good amount of sliced beef and meatballs. Broth was flavorful and not too sweet in my opinion. We also ordered the combo sandwich bread was a bit puffy and had egg rolls which were really crispy and had a good taste. Overall I would come back again, they constantly refilled my water and were attentive in their service.

Google
There's plenty of pho in the U-District to the point of gluttony. Given the saturated market, it takes a lot for a location to stand out, and this place did not do it for me. I had their brisket pho, and while delicious, it wasn't my favorite on the ave. I will be returning, but with tempered expectations. Service is kind and prompt, but the inside temperature can be kind of stuffy as the ventilation is poor.

Yelp
First time here, just needed to grab I bite while by daughter perused stored. I was very pleased with my Bahn Mi sandwich! It was packed to the max with veggies and perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken. I took my food to go. However, the interior is what you'd expect in a U-district restaurant- pretty run down and outdated. I used the bathroom and there were no paper towels. I feel like most restaurants in this area are in similar shape; it doesn't bother me. The service was quick and to the point. No small talk or welcoming exchanges- just a transaction. But again, that's the norm in that area. I'll definitely be back to try more food! I love good Vietnamese cuisine.

Yelp
I ordered the charbroiled pork chops over rice. They allowed me to substitute vermicelli noodles for it. But the pork was completely dry and black on one side. When I opened it it looked OK at first because they only showed the non-burnt side, but the other side was completely black and the whole pork chop was inedible. I felt like I got ripped off. I also ordered a banh mi and there was a lot of pork, but it was cold and not good quality.

Yelp
My fav pho restaurant in U District!!! I ordered the supreme combo with every meat you can think of meatball, sirloin, tendon, beef ($25 including tip). The staff were really nice and portions are huge (ended up taking leftovers home). 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
google avatar

Calista C.

Yelp
Great for a sit-down spot open relatively late! The service was really friendly and food was served very quickly (we were they only table). The pineapple fried rice and the rice dish were both great - menu is very large so you will find something you're interested in

Yelp
The best banh mi in Seattle hands down. I frequented this Than Vi while a grad student at UW and stopped by this afternoon while in Seattle- it's only gotten better! Tasty and fresh ingredients made only better by the superb customer service of Than Vi staff, especially given that often it takes less than 10 minutes to receive our food. Would highly recommend.

Chelsia L.

Yelp
This place is slightly below average. I would probably not dine here again since there are plenty of options nearby. We ordered a large pho and a a banh mi to share. The pho was more like a regular sized pho when compared to any other viet place. Soup was average, nothing special really. The banh mi was shredded, slightly dry, and kinda bland. The flavors were missing (pate, coriander, and all the other good stuff)! Service was fine! People are nice.

Atul B.

Yelp
My son and I have been on a quest to find the best Banh mi in Seattle. We have been to about 10 places so far and this has been in our top 4. Bread is ok and fillings are generous. Service is also good, but it is not a place you want to come to for the ambiance. We also had the house fried rice which was nice. We will most likely come back for take out.

Yelp
Not the best, but not the worst. Small restaurant off of University Way, convenient for students in the area looking for a quick bowl of pho. I ordered the typical Pho Dac Biet which is my usual way to determine whether a Vietnamese restaurant makes good food or not. I don't think my bowl was bad, but it wasn't anything to gush over. The broth was okay, a little light for my taste even after adding hoisin sauce. Noodles were to their standard and the meat was fine. I wouldn't recommend this place for pho in Seattle, but if you're walking down the street then this would be an okay option for Vietnamese food. I'll have to try out their other dishes as well to see if there is anything better.

Yelp
i was really craving a bahn mi, so i got the combo bahn mi, which includes, chicken, pork, and vietnamese ham (i'm indecisive). it was so so good, and they didn't skimp on the meat at all!! the filling was falling out as i was munching. i paid around $10.50 including tax and tip, which is a little on the pricier side imo, but i will definitely be back to order to go. the bahn mi by itself was $8.50, which is a bit more than the usual $6.50 bahn mi you can find on the ave, but it was definitely worth it for the quality.

Yelp
Amazing Pho, delicious shrimp spring rolls! Quick, friendly, and helpful service. Cute small spot. We loved it!
google avatar

Jeremy G.

Yelp
Small location. Service was good. Spring rolls and peanut sauce was on point. But the pho, pho was little on the sweet side. Maybe a little too sweet for my own taste. The noodles were good. The meatballs were on point. But the meat, was eh decent. Not top self but decent. The sweetness was the one thing that killed it for me. Even when adding chili, the sweet didn't go away. I'll try a different spot around the block.

Yelp
I love pho. I order pho more than I should. Sometimes multiple times a week. My kidneys hate me, but it's just so good. For the last year and a half, Thanh Vi has been my go-to. But the last few times I've ordered, the food has been very lackluster (and at least once completely wrong). This last delivery today sealed the deal. I won't be returning. Not only did most of my broth come in the plastic bag rather than the container, it was extra oily and lacking in flavor. Like, didn't even taste like chicken broth kind of lacking in flavor (packed it full of hoisin and sriracha just to have something). It looked like the chicken was from a tin can rather than the usual, and there were zero green onions (when I requested extra). It was delivered cold (2+ hours after ordering) and rendered inedible. Some of that is on GrubHub, but where's the QC? Oh, how the mighty have pho-llen. Time to find another pho ga spot.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Pho has gone up in price but quality seems a bit off lately? Hoping the usual quality returns
google avatar

Jboogie L.

Yelp
I chose this place based on number of reviews. The food was just meh for me. The pho had red onions. The lemongrass chicken was a bit watery. The banh xeo was not too crispy. Service was friendly.
google avatar

Hilary W.

Yelp
This is my second time here in under a week! It was so good the first time I couldn't resist!! Hands down one of the tastier broths I've had. Salty, rich in flavor, great meat (I ordered the brisket pho). Must say though that the noodles were a bit strangely cooked the second time - almost as if they had been prepared in water that wasn't quite hot enough so they were a weird texture. But I'm splitting hairs - this place is still awesome in my experience. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

J T.

Yelp
Worst Pho I have ever had. Lacking flavor and greasy. I honestly can't beleive how truly awful it was. Don't waste you money. I have never seen such a yellow broth in beef pho broth.
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
Pros: - Continue to make quality, delicious Vietnamese sandwiches (my favorite is grilled pork) - Really accommodating especially with catering orders; able to support large sandwich orders day of - Sandwiches are made quickly, often in less than five minutes - Staff are friendly and remember their regular customers, so I will continue to support this family-owned business because they are kind, honest, and good at making Vietnamese sandwiches - Would highly recommend/return Cons: - I have had a few bland sandwiches every once in a while, but 90% of the time they are delicious and spot on - Prices seemed to increase but understandable due to inflation/COVID; a bit on the pricier side compared to comparable Vietnamese delis in Seattle Notes: - Not affiliated with Thanh Vi in Chinatown/International District - Trust me, I am Vietnamese :)

Yelp
Ordered doordash from here, best pho I've ordered delivery from. Portions are solid. Food is good. No MSG but tastes really good. Good to have found my pho place in seattle
google avatar

Prag R.

Yelp
This is the only pho I ate till now and I'm bowled over as to how yummy it is. It comes along with sprouts and jalapenos, get some extra if you like your pho spicy like mine. The small size suffices you a lot, the quantity is so much really. The server was friendly and made us feel very comfortable and explained when we had questions. Must try place if you are in need of good big bowl of hot pho when in U dist.
google avatar

Alan Z.

Yelp
Pretty standard pho place, was pretty empty when I went before noon on a Wednesday. Got pho since I was feeling noodles. The noodles themselves were a little harder than normal but I don't mind that texture so it was good. I do think that the broth could have used more flavor though since I put a good amount of sauce and spice into it. The meat and bean sprouts were pretty standard. Wasn't too expensive for a pho place, around average for the Seattle area.
google avatar

Mikey W.

Yelp
Excellent bowl of pho. Very fragrant and savory, absolutely hit the spot for my lunch. The large size is more than enough and the service was incredibly friendly and attentive. Ordered a pho tai and got exactly what I was hoping for - a full warm belly and a little pep in my step for the rest of the day.
google avatar

Jesena M.

Yelp
This is a small strip restaurant, fairly basic overall. The food is ok, good portions, definitely not the most flavorful, they could step it up. Wait times are pretty long overall, but they do offer a good value I guess.
google avatar

Roshan R.

Yelp
The chicken bhan mi was good. I would give it 4/5. I like the chilli crisp oil they give on side. The chicken ham boa is basically a bao bun with egg, chicken and chicken sausage in it. It was flavorless and had an odd taste. It sounds tempting but I would advice people to avoid it. I would give it 1/5. Also, the bao bun didn't feel/taste fresh

Yelp
Came in on a Monday (President's Day) at 1 and the place was completely empty. We might have over-ordered for two people but I'm pretty happy with most of the stuff we ordered. Here is what we ate: Cha gio - might be one of the worst Cha gio I've had. They used regular spring roll paper instead of the rice one, and the filling was nothing special. It was also oily and kind of tasted like it was reheated by just being refried. Not fresh Banh mi combo (with chicken, pork, and ham) - pretty solid banh mi. You would think that there is too much going on with the different proteins but this just worked Beef Combo pho - perfect for a chilly, cloudy Seattle day. The broth is excellent Charbroiled marinated beef ribs - a little salty but nothing some broken rice can't fix. Plus the portion is huge Although the Cha gio wasn't my favorite, all of the other dishes made up for it. Glad I got to try some Vietnamese food while visiting Seattle.

Yelp
Under new ownership. It's still good, but the service is much less personable. The new decor looks nice. The old owners retired.

Grant A.

Yelp
Don't order extra anything from here, they have a standard togo container and if you get more meat you get less noodle

Valerie L.

Yelp
The pork banh mi and steak pho is so good. Everyone who works here is so nice, the service is great!
google avatar

Kimmy L.

Yelp
I finally tried the pho tai here after a cold fall day. In comparison to other pho I've had on the Ave, the broth has more cinnamon spice notes. The noodles are not overly cooked and they're pretty generous with the amount of meat they give you in a regular bowl. The basil could be fresher, but it surpassed my expectations. However, towards the end of the meal, I noticed something floating in my broth. I think it was a small bug...
google avatar

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were craving for some Vietnamese food and it looks like this place was the only place that opened. My boyfriend wanted to try their vegetarian special banh mi which instead of using typical tofu, they used mushroom. To me, that was a failed...the mushroom totally overpowered every thing. If you took the mushroom out, it had good flavors of a banh mi,but when you added the mushroom, it just totally took over. Also, the mushroom made the sandwich super wet so it was soggy. I was excited when I saw that they had pho ap Chao on their menu so I had to order it. However, I was so disappointed because it wasn't what I expected at all. It was basically a chow fun when it should have been pan fried noodle. Not many places make these dishes so I was very disappointed that they named this dish wrong... portion was good though and food did came out quickly. Overall, kinda disappointed by the food but it was still ok, not sure if I would come back as their are other Vietnamese places close by as well.

Joe S.

Yelp
Pho Chin Soup: Granted I'm from the midwest and not a connoisseur, but in 2018 this was the best Pho I've ever had, and I ordered a large amount for takeout and binged on it for my entire stay on my biz trip. Moreover, the cohort I had come to shadow at my company IS a foodie and went to UWA and lo and behold took me back to the same place as his favorite local restaurant. It's not a "destination" restaurant of course, the purpose is to get some of the best food. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Larry C.

Yelp
Vegetarian broth Pho done right! This place gives option to make Pho bowl with another non-beef /non-pork broth like vegetarian broth...keeping the Pho flavor! Typically other Asian eateries mess up the dish on substituting the base broth (beef or pork based soup) by the atypical vegetable or seafood broth. I have had Pho many times which were made bland when veggie broth was used. However, fortunately Thanh V did not mess up. This vegetable broth still had trademark Pho flavor of "burnt onion". And, the rice noodles were so perfectly cooked to allow them to cut by chopsticks and eat with spoonful of flavorful broth.

Yelp
Another day, another Uber Eats meal. My wife and I tried several different smaller items on the cheaper side rather than going with entrees. Here's what we got: Hu Tiu Xao Chay (Tofu and vegetable stir-fry): I got this dish primarily because I was craving a lot of veggies so I was kinda disappointed that this dish was dominated by a ton of rice noodles. The veggies you see in the pic were about it--- all on top. This dish also could've used a bit more flavor. I ended up adding some soy sauce to kick it up a bit. I wouldn't order again. Chao Gio Chay (Egg rolls): These were delicious. Not much else to add except that they had a lot of flavor, were fried perfectly, and the dipping sauce took it over the top. Wish they could've added more for $6 though :) Golden Rice Balls (Fried sweet rice balls stuffed with pork): I'm still a bit torn on these. I was hoping that the saltiness of the pork would be equivalent to the sweetness of the rice.... but this dish was much sweeter than I expected and was almost akin to a dessert. I couldn't taste the pork at all. However, I really enjoyed the crunchy outer texture and the gummy texture on the inside. I probably wouldn't buy these again but would eat them if I got them for free haha. Chicken Banh Mi: This sandwich was excellent. This was my first banh mi even though I've been wanting to try one forever. The bread was perfectly fresh and the chicken was grilled perfectly. The diced veggies inside complimented the chicken. Ga Nuong Cuon Xa (Lemongrass chicken skewers): Similar to the chicken in the banh mi, this chicken was grilled perfectly. The flavor was amazing and I could eat these skewers all day. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would definitely go back again. I also appreciated that they provided a ton of napkins, utensils, and even individual packets of hot sauce and hoisin sauce. Lastly, they are pretty fast in preparing the food.

Yelp
Tried the rice vermicelli noodle for the first time! It looks like "粉" in China. But it softer and easier to be broken than that. I prefer "粉" more than this hahahaha! I had tender beef and veges, the veges here are most bell peppers and celery, sort of chewy and crispy! The flavor was not strong, a small bowl of soup with the noodle smells a little bit stinky and sour, not really used to it lol. I was addicted to their pepper sauce! It was AWESOME!!! really really spicy! I believe I will come here again for having the spicy pepper sauce! 4 / 5 for taste(0.5 is added for pepper) 5 / 5 for service

Steven G.

Yelp
The good news: the portions were generous. But the Pho broth was only average at best, and the chicken on the Banh Mi was dry. Nothing was anything close to terrible, but it just didn't leave me thinking that I'm glad I ordered here, which I did based on reviews and location. I'll try another spot next time.
google avatar

Alice Z.

Yelp
Location is super convenient especially for UW students because it is located right on the ave. It is nice that they are open a bit later too than other restaurants located on the ave. Food wise, the menu has a lot of great options. portion sizes are good and you get good value for your money.

Courtney C.

Yelp
Great location right on the Ave. Very clean. Staff is very friendly. Food is amazing. I have Vietnamese friends and they eat here; they say the food is great. A must try. Courtney
google avatar

Yelp
After 3 years of trying to find good pho on the Ave, I think I found it here. I wrote off Pho Zizzle after 2 bad meals and settled for Pho Than Bros as the next best thing, but grew tired of them because they do not sell any other items other than pho. I wanted pho but not from either of those two places. I walked into here, ordered the combo pho and eggrolls, and was delighted when I got home. My pho was perfect. The broth was so good and fragrant. It had me like, "this is what I have been missing?!?!" They have a pretty extensive menu so I will be back to try other dishes. Excited that I have finally found a spot that I can really enjoy. They are pretty chill people with yummy food so give em a chance.
google avatar

Jun Li Z.

Yelp
So I ordered from here a week ago and the food was okay. I just couldn't believe how dry the meat was. I got the chicken bahn mi sandwich and the pork chop with rice. I'm not sure if they kept reheating or overcooked both meats in my dishes but it was the driest food I have ever eaten for as long as I can remember. Nothing bad about the service - got takeout. I was very disappointed in the quality of food. It was so dry that it felt like I was eating jerky, and had to chew multiple times before I can swallow with water, the texture was extremely tough. I see lots of good reviews but unfortunately I am not sold on this place.
google avatar

Yee V.

Yelp
Aside from food - I wanna just express the great customer experience you'll receive from them amongst the pandemic we're in. I urge everyone to take-out from them when you have the opportunity to see what true customer service should be! They fight everyday to keep their business open so the least we can do is have lunch/dinner their at least once :) I ordered take-out over the phone and already the lady boss working was very pleasant over the phone. I got the Combination Pho and Combination Banh Mi both of which was really good. But the Banh Mi was what surprised me the most, their sandwich did not include Pate like a lot of others do. But the Grilled Chicken that was in it was off the hook and had me thinking when I would be able to go back. The bread was nicely toasted but not to the point where it would cut the roof of your mouth (brownie points right there). The only regret I have is devouring the entire thing before I got a chance to take a picture for y'all. Plenty of street parking right outside the restaurant. When I came in to pick-up and pay, the boss was so nice and enthusiastic. During a time like this where everyone is stressed about how to make ends meet, she expressed her struggles but also her gratitude towards every customer that walked in. Still dreaming about that Banh Mi

Yelp
Ordered delivery: tofu banh mi, banh mi chay dac biet (mushroom sandwich), and goi cuon Chay (tofu summer rolls). - Delivery: I pre-ordered for 12:45pm today and at 12:45 on the dot my delivery guy texted me! Easy, quick, no complaints. - Tofu banh mi: This is the only item I'd change. I love the pickled veggies and bread, but the tofu was a little plain. A decent amount of tofu, but I prefer when tofu is marinated for a sandwich like this. Random thing I appreciated was that the cilantro they included wasn't too stemmy and difficult to eat in the sandwich. There were no jalapenos, which I like in my banh mi. Would have preferred if they cut the sandwiches in half, but this isn't a big deal for me. They also included a pack of Sriracha and Hoisin sauce on the side. (3.5/5) - Banh mi chay dac biet: This mushroom sandwich was bomb! The mushrooms were nicely cooked and seasoned, there was a good amount on the sandwich, and they were a hearty substitute for meat or tofu. Also no jalapenos in this one, so I'd add this if I could. Would come back just to get this! (5/5) - Goi cuon chay: These were two big summer rolls with fried tofu, lettuce, basil, noodles. Came with a pretty big container of sauce, which was delicious! (4.5/5) Would definitely return! Edit: Total with delivery and tip, this cost me about $28. For people that eat a normal/smaller lunch, this amount could probably feed 2. However, if you're like me and eat a ton of food these sandwiches might be a little small. I ate all this myself for lunch during about an hour (weird flex, but okay). :D
google avatar

AJ L.

Yelp
Friendly service, reasonable prices, good serving size. I liked their Pho Dac Biet, flavor of the meatballs was especially nice. All in all not the best Pho I've ever had but seems like solid dishes across the board. My friend from Vietnam thinks they're pretty good/authentic. Will have to come back to try their banh mi.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank God for this place. As a businessman it's been months since I have been able to eat some quality Vietnamese food. At 9 o'clock at night 30 minutes prior to closing, the owner graciously still serve us. For the price margin's and abundance volume of food this is and undeniably the best Viet restaurant and authentic and Seattle. Viet people hate small size portion. I've been eating here for 4 years. The food is very consistent. Fresh, make your ordinary salad horrible. It is definitely affordable and they kept the cooks for many years so the food consistency will be the same every time you come back here to eat. I urged you to support this local business and support local people.

Yelp
Vietnamese food is not typically my first choice but this place serves SUCH amazing umami filled flavors in their food! They know how to cook an egg and it was the most perfect sunny side egg with fluffy egg white you can dream of. Chicken, pork, and shrimp were grilled to quintessential form. Even the bread and rice were so good that I did not leave a morsel or grain left. They had super unique drink selections and the freshly squeezed passion fruit juice was out of this world! I wish this place was close to me; I would eat here everyday!

Yelp
Bun bo hue was good. To go packaging was a bit hard to eat in but good nonetheless. Solid place for a sit down or take out meal.

Yelp
My favorite thing about Thanh vi is their versatile menu: seriously, they have rice dishes, pho, noodles, a wide range of appetizers, bubble tea, desserts - everything. Its great going with a group of indecisive friends because no matter what you get, you won't be disappointed. Would have given 4.5/5 for overall if I could. Food: 5/5. Never disappointed with the food and prices. Service: 4/5. Most times everything goes smoothly, however, when it gets very crowded the wait tends to be long and waters arrive after our food... all workers are extremely nice though and apologetic. Parking: since it is on the ave, street parking is limited, so keep in mind during rush hour. Pictured: Charcoiled pork with added egg ($1). Comes with veggies, fish sauce, and rice.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
Ducked into Thanh Vi on the Ave after making a quick visit to H Mart (7/7/17). Big plus, super pleasant wait person and the restaurant had tantalizing smells. Enough to distract me from all the cherub decor. The other person had a head start and pretty much was demolishing one of the featured banh mis and a Vietnamese iced coffee. I ordered a pair of shrimp fresh rolls. Nice, moist vermicelli noodles, crisp veg, and plump, succulent shrimp, served with a peanut sauce. I also added one grilled pork skewer. Wow that was delicious! Marinated with lemongrass and other aromatics, jammed packed on the skewer, and perfectly grilled. Loved the dipping sauce. Mmmmm I sure enjoy meat on a stick! And of course, happy to have copious refills of iced water. Great spot to grab a quick bite!
google avatar

Yu-pei H.

Yelp
Wanting to try a new restaurant, I decided to stop by this place. I got the the rice vermicilli with beef (9.97). The noodles were unlike vermicilli I've gotten at other places; they were thicker but still quite good. The bowl had a generous amount of both beef and vegetables and sauce as well. Overall, a solid dependable place to get some vietnamese food!

Yelp
Go to place in the Udistrict for pho. Cheap pho that tastes great. Found a hair in my food once, that's the only reason for no 5 stars.

Yelp
Came in early (11am), on graduation day at UW. Asked if they would make me a bowl of egg noodles beef stew and they obliged. Very nice to accommodate. Food good, friendly, attentive staff. Family run.
