Best Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"North Scottsdale has a pleasant neighborhood gelateria in That’s Amore. With mounds of baccio, panna cotta, pistachio, and other classic Italian flavors gleaming from the display case, this hidden gem does old-school gelato right. It also churns novel creations. Flavors like whiskey cream (like sipping bourbon) and stracciatella with black cherries and nuts (a burst of fruit flavor, chocolate, and crunch) might even surpass the classics. If you’re into affogato, pull the trigger here. That’s Amore has a higher-end espresso machine and drowns one or two scoops in rich, creamy coffee." - Chris Malloy

After a rough day, I decided to trade stress for scoops at That's Amore Gelato which to me translates simply to "Happiness by the Scoop"! And let me tell you, it was the best decision ever. Some lovely friends introduced us to the place last year and it is now a frequent stop. The place smells like pure happiness (seriously, they should bottle it), and I can hardly peel my eyes off all the gorgeous colorful gelatos in the case, just waiting to be chosen! And I so appreciate the friendly staff who always make you feel like family, never rushed, just sweet and welcoming. I usually stick to my go-tos: Coranetta (sweet and slightly tart cherry) and Dulce de Leche (both ridiculously delicious), but this time I got adventurous. I mean I was stressed out after all, so a little adventure was the plan for resetting my day! So, I went for a small dish with Rocky Road and Lemon Meringue which are both favorite flavors and still turned out to be an unexpected but genius combo. I mean it's hard to not love chocolate and lemon! Creamy, rich, tart, and chocolatey – basically a dessert love story in a cup. Yes please!! Family-owned, super clean, friendly staff and always a treat worth making the stop for! That's Amore Gelato has never disappointed me. Whether you're celebrating or just surviving the day, this place makes everything better...one spoonful at a time. And yes, I am already planning my next visit! Thanks That's Amore Gelato! Fabulous shop!

I had an absolutely delightful experience at Amore Gelato! The gelato was creamy, bursting with authentic flavors, and made with clear passion. The staff was warm, welcoming, and eager to help me pick the perfect scoop. The cozy atmosphere and charming decor made it a perfect spot to indulge. Highly recommend this gem for anyone craving a sweet treat done right!

I haven’t been here for 6 months since trying the new owners recipe and service. It’s not the same as the original. And look at the owners responses on n the 1 and 2 star reviews. He never takes responsibility. Always the customer is wrong and tells them not to come back. His attitude is horrible. Go try Allora at Shea & Scottsdale. You’ll be happy.

Google
Used to be Amazing—Now Sadly Disappointing We used to love this place when it was owned by the original Italian siblings, but sadly it’s not the same anymore. We haven’t been back often since it changed hands, but stopped by tonight and were really let down. The stracciatella tasted more like plain vanilla—no visible chocolate shavings, and the flavor was flat. The coffee gelato was just as disappointing—barely any flavor at all. Banana was the only one that was passable. At nearly $13 for two small gelatos, we expected something worth finishing, but instead ended up tossing most of it in the trash. Not sure we’ll be returning. update to your response: Given the noticeable drop in quality of your gelato, I can’t say I’m surprised by the tone of your response. Instead of addressing the real issue—flavor and quality—you deflected with a defensive reply that only reinforces my point. Stracciatella without visible chocolate and a coffee flavor that barely registers are not minor misses, especially from a place we’ve supported for over a decade. Your dismissiveness isn’t just disappointing—it’s telling. If this is how you handle honest feedback, it’s no wonder the gelato isn’t what it used to be.

Google
Widest range of gelato options. And all tempting and surprisingly different from one another. They are very generous in giving out samples. The ambiance is well for the food. They have mole outside seating to bring your dog with! Highly recommend.

Google
The beat treat around! This is a tiny place that packs in so many flavors of Gelato and sorbet. Made fresh everyday and throughout the day as it sells, you won't be disappointed. Not sure what to get? They let you sample anything. Every flavor is so delicious you'll have a hard time choosing and will return over and over again!

Google
Young workers were super nice. Decided to try this place on vacation because of the great reviews. We have the best gelato place here in Massachusetts where we live. We love gelato and are regulars at home. But this gelato tastes like half n half and it is too sweet for my liking with no actual flavoring of the flavor it is supposed to be. My kids were not impressed. We did not finish it and are not fans.

Paul Stricklin

Google
The gelato here is excellent, the atmosphere is charmingly old fashioned, and the service is top notch. Betty did a great job of managing a staggering number of orders single handedly while making sure every guest was having a good time. I will certainly be back.

Yelp
Server Madi with the red head had great service for all of us. Gave great sample advice.

Yelp
Visited June 2025 Repeat visitor Rough day? Trade stress for scoops at That's Amore Gelato...trust me, it works. Some friends introduced us last year, and now it's officially in the rotation. The second you walk in, it smells like joy (seriously, they should sell it as a candle), and the case full of colorful gelato? Pure beautiful temptation. The staff is always warm, patient, and just genuinely lovely...never rushed, always smiling. I usually stick to Coranetta and Dulce de Leche, but this time I wanted a little shake-up. Hello, Rocky Road and Lemon Meringue. Chocolate meets tart lemon in the most delightful dessert twist. Total rough day reset in a cup. Family-owned, and always worth the detour. Whether you're celebrating or just hanging by a thread, That's Amore delivers happiness by the spoonful. Already planning my next visit!

Yelp
We were craving something sweet and That's Amore gelato wasn't far from us. It's located in a strip with other business and easy to find. The spot was clean and organized and the employees were friendly and efficient. We went with a black cherry with chocolate and nuts (cornetto) and also a vanilla/chocolate combo. With the small you can get up to 2 flavors. The prices are fine and I really loved all the flavor options they offered. The cornetto which was the black cherry was amazing, full of flavor with chunks of black cherries. I would definitely get that one again and cannot wait to try other flavors on our next stop in!

Yelp
This is the best gelato/ice cream in AZ, easily. I highly recommend the pistachio and raspberry. The service is very fast, and the place is clean and Italian themed. The gelato here was comparable if not better to what I've had in Florence and Rome.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely delicious gelato! We will be back! I brought my two kids and it was wonderful tasting a bunch of flavors and the window was low enough that my 3 year old could see all the gelato.

Yelp
This place was pretty good! The lady that helped me was very polite. I sampled some of the flavors and decided on the pistachio. There was a bit of a line when we walked in but it went by quick. They have lots of flavor options so you'll be sure to find something that you like. The ambiance was nice a bit cozy inside and then some tables outside for outdoor seating. It was a nice stop after a date night.

Mary Jane K.

Yelp
Took the grandkids that were visiting. They love Gelato and they said this was the best they've ever had. So many choices Service was great and there was lots of seating.

Yelp
$6.50 for a small scoop that tasted like chemical induced artificial flavors. Don't try this place! Not worth it.

Yelp
OMG that PISTACHIO!!!!! Mind blowing delicious!!! Incredible natural flavor and color (brown not green!). Best we've ever had by a long shot. 5+++++++ stars! Limoncello sorbet - refreshing and not too tart. 4.5 stars. Mascarpone and fig - uniquely delicious flavor. 5 stars. Black cherry - fantastic cherry flavor with tasty sweetened cherries pieces. Excellent! 5+ stars! If this is what true Italian gelato is like we are planning a trip to Italy. We're only in town a few days but we're coming back everyday we're here!!!

Yelp
Best Gelato ever!! And she will make special flavors if you order ahead!! I try to get different flavors every time but it's hard because they are all so good!!

Joshua N.

Yelp
I just gotta start by saying WOWWWWW.. my wife and I popped in tonight for the first time and that Gelato was absolutely OUTSTANDINGGGGG! The Toblerone, crème brulee, lavender, cinnamon, pistanchio; all 5 of those flavors were literally that good . We had to stick around and had a couple pieces of cake as well. The torte lemon nonna and the blueberry mascarpone were literally that good and my wife and I were both in absolute awe . We can't wait to come back and eat every other cake and gelato that you have. THAT'S AMORE!‍

Yelp
Food good service good ambiance good on warm night. Good for to go again near futch. Much good

Nelam P.

Yelp
Went here because of the high ratings - choices are great, and flavors are pretty good too. But the gelato melted immediately after getting it. I was literally parked right outside. We didn't get to enjoy it at all and threw it out - total waste of $.

Yelp
Excellent! Easy to find, great selection, delish! I'd return--every day if possible! Nice counter service.

Yelp
Glad we finally stopped in. The "Gelato Stop" was our favorite place, but they moved far out of our area some time ago. We like That's Amore even more. It's a real treat.

Rita B.

Yelp
I recently visited my favorite gelato place expecting everything to be the same... Unfortunately I wasn't able to try any of it None of the counter service wore food service gloves. I watched them all handle the cash register and come back and handle the gelato. One young girl came out with my sandwich in her bare hands.... Handled the register... went back finished my sandwich with bare hands. I waited for her to finish and i informed her that my husband is a food safety inspector and that she needs to wear gloves. She was unexpectedly super rude after hearing this... needless to say i threw my food out and left Sorry thats Amore you need to teach your young staff the rules of food safety. I don't blame them. I blame the owners or managers People don't know what they are not taught

Yelp
When ever I'm in North Scottsdale and in the mood for Gelato , That's Amore is my go to place. The new ownership is friendly and dishes out an ample amount of great Gelato. They have a wide selection (35) of flavors . They also have cakes, pastries and espresso coffee. My 3 favorite flavors are Pistacchio, Coffee, and Stracciatella. If you buy a medium or large size you can get up to 3 flavors.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for so many years, knowing it as the best place in the valley get gelato. It had been over a year since I had stepped into the store and as it was my birthday, I wanted it to be special. The team that was here before the previous ownership was such a delight and would do anything to make your day even better. I am as greeted by a young girl who was nice but lacked a warm greeting and product ceremony. I noticed that there were so many new faces and things in the shop felt different with less love into the business. I took it upon myself to ask a gentleman who I believed to be a manager/owner if there was a new owner. he introduced himself as the owner but did not let me know his name. I asked why the last owners told or perhaps a story about it and he became very defensive. What was most disturbing about the whole experience? Was this man who was also a father purchased this business for his privileged son and they have zero experience in the gelato business, As they have zero heart and soul. If you wanna support a wealthy rich man to take advantage of a carefully made business and turn it into a rude miserable environment , come here! This was a business that brought love and joy. it's no longer. SO SAD.

Yelp
I never expect much from ice cream in a strip mall, but this place was great. Not that much seating, but it wasn't a problem since most people ordered to-go anyway. The vibe is traditional Italian without being kitsch. The focus was on the food and I loved that. There were also high chairs for kids and I greatly appreciated that. (I always love anyplace that is kid friendly). The cakes are big portions and the flavors of the gelato were innovative and interesting. Cannoli tasted like it was made with love. Will come back again soon.

Yelp
Overall rating: 3.5/5 Wait: 4/5 Arrival time: Sunday 7:30pm Food: 4/5 Order: mango/pina colada, pistachio/coffee Service: n/a Price: 4/5 Worth a try but probably won't be back Title: Decent Gelato in Phoenix, but Lacks the Italian Touch Rating: 3.5/5 I recently visited That's Amore Gelato on a Sunday evening at 7:30pm. While my experience was overall decent, I must admit that it fell short of capturing the authentic taste and charm of gelato in Italy. That being said, if you're in Phoenix and looking for a sweet treat, it's worth a try, although it may not be enough to convince me to come back. In terms of the wait time, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the busy Sunday evening, I didn't have to wait for too long. I appreciate that the staff efficiently served the customers, resulting in a 4/5 rating for the wait. Now let's talk about the gelato itself. I ordered the Mango/Pina Colada and Pistachio/Coffee flavors. Both combinations were enjoyable, and the gelato had a creamy texture. The flavors were good, but they didn't blow me away. While the gelato at That's Amore was satisfactory, it didn't possess the unique and exquisite taste that I've experienced in authentic Italian gelaterias. Hence, I give it a 4/5 rating for the food, acknowledging that it falls short compared to other gelato places in the area. In terms of price, That's Amore Gelato offers a reasonable value for the quality of gelato provided. The prices were fair, and I felt that I got what I paid for. Considering this, I believe a 4/5 rating for the price is appropriate. To conclude, That's Amore Gelato in Phoenix is a decent option if you're in the mood for a sweet treat. While it doesn't quite capture the essence of gelato from Italy, it manages to satisfy the craving for a creamy and flavorful dessert. However, I can't say it stands out compared to other gelato places in the area. If you're looking for an authentic Italian gelato experience, you may want to explore other options. That being said, That's Amore Gelato is worth a try if you're in the vicinity and seeking a dessert fix.

Yelp
Great selection, good flavors and good service. I got the banana/peanut butter and my husband got the lemon/cinnamon. All delicious, we definitely come back!

Yelp
Felt like I was back in Florence when I 1st got there. The workers(owners) were speaking Italian, and it had the feel of a very traditional Gelateria. The gelato was every bit as good as any I've had in the USA. Now that Groms isn't in the US anymore, That's Amore Gelato it's my favorite.

Gia F.

Yelp
One of my favorite local spots that has been around for a long time! Amazing Gelato and treats.

Yelp
Very popular gelato spot in North Scottsdale. We stopped by here on a Friday night, and the line for gelato was out the door the entire time. We did not try the gelato but instead ordered the cannoli and cream puff. Both were good, but would like to come back and try the gelato, as that seem to be the most popular choice.
google avatar

Russell K.

Yelp
They are lost on pricing. $8 for a cup, go to handels and you can get a pint for $5. The stracciatella had no flavor. Older lady is dry, pistachio was good. Went her the weeks before they were closing for two weeks as well and the place didn't have A/C

Abhay K.

Yelp
Another outstanding desert place if you are looking for Gelato. It's in north Scottsdale so could be a long drive for many. This place makes real Italian gelato as the owners are migrated here from Italy. So many choices and can taste it before deciding which one you like. I have tried few flavours from coconut, passion fruit, coffee, chocolate and many more. Bit pricy but quality is very good. They also have pastries, coffee and other stuff . Service is good and plenty of seating inside and outside. Very busy during summer time. Will go there again when I am in a mood for Gelato.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Delicious, legit Italian gelato in the heart of Scottsdale! This family-owned and operated business serves up traditional Italian desserts with big love. There are a ton of flavors but the vegan ones have my heart, specifically their coconut-based dark chocolate. I don't know what their secret is, but it's a magical bowl of chocolate gelato. There's ample indoor and outdoor seating. Weather permitting, it's nice to sit outside but the interior walls are covered with beautiful murals that make the experience really different. Please note that they no longer offer samples - which I feel is very fair. It's not standard in any other food service category that you can try your food before buying. Parking is easy peasy, there's always plenty available in the lot off Hayden. You won't find better gelato than at That's Amore!
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
Yuuummmmmm. This was a nice surprise. Seriously delicious and authentic Italian gelato with tons of flavors and really friendly staff inside. I chose pistachio and a chocolate cherry flavor with their fresh chocolate topping. Some friendly locals inside recommended flavors to me. They also have fresh baked goodies in their glass display like tiramisu and cannolis.
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
Kid friendly and Ella approved! Thank you Gianna! Great gelato and desserts. Free coffee grinds for the plants.
google avatar

Heidi B.

Yelp
Sad that the business got sold :( No samples?? How is that even allowed. We've been coming here for years and the sampling is a part of the experience. Not being able to try anything before buying is disappointing. The flavors are great of course but some of the recipes have changed such as the Hazelnut. The service was friendly and the store was still just as clean, but it's just not what it used to be here sadly.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
A ton of gelato options, along with a large assortment of Italian candy and baked goods. Everything I have tried has been delicious, and the takeout containers are solid thick styrofoam and will keep your gelato ice cold for the trip home. Legit, friendly, Italian owners and employees. This place is great and we're lucky to have them in north Scottsdale!

Yelp
My wife and I wanted a treat after lunch yesterday. I pulled up my Yelp app and did a search for 'gelato'. I was looking for a spot we've yet to visit so I could get my Yelp on and lo and behold - That's Amore Gelato popped up. Grab your car keys, lovely wife of mine because we are going on an adventure! Their location is conveniently located in Scottsdale off Pinnacle Peak. Super clean parking lot. Super clean entryway. Super friendly service. The interior has a few tables and chairs to accommodate customers if they choose to sit inside. There are also a few tables and chairs outside on their front entrance patio. The owner greeted us the moment we walked through the door. I honestly thought the selection was already amazing and we had a difficult time deciding which flavors to go with... I opted for half black cherry and half coconut. Let me just say the flavors were spectacular. The coloring was amazing. It was fresh, it was incredibly tasty and amongst the best gelato we've ever had. It was also incredibly reasonable as far as pricing goes. It is easy to see how and why they've won numerous accolades and awards. Highly recommended. If you're out shopping and want a quick treat or maybe you're sitting around after dinner and want a quick treat - I'd highly recommend a trip out to That's Amore Gelato. You will not be disappointed!!

Yelp
I really liked this gelato place. You have to try the chocolate raspberry. I imagine it gets crowded at night, but it's well worth the wait.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a really great little gelato spot in Northeast Scottsdale. I went in here with a few friends a few nights ago and was shocked that such a place existed so far from the downtown area. The service is really great the girl that took are order was very professional and courteous. Which made the experience all the more enjoyable. I had a cone of their whiskey cream, and pistachio gelato which where amazing. I look forward to returning here again for future visits.

Rich M.

Yelp
This is by far the best gelato I have ever had! I brought 3 flavors home and the container kept the gelato perfect. I will go back and have coffee and some great looking pastries. You have to and try it.

Cooper D.

Yelp
We had been going here for 15 years when we lived in area. We moved south and haven't been back in over 2 years- new ownership and it's not the same. The service or the quality. So sad. Still looking for good gelato in the valley.
google avatar

Kyliee L.

Yelp
A good Gelato spot is always hard to find in my opinion. But this place is one of the BEST Gelato spots in AZ. Every time we go there is always a line out the door (that's when you know it's good) The owners are so kind and awesome. There is about 30 flavors to choose from, and you can mix and match! Every time we go I try a new flavor and can never pick a favorite cause they are all SOOOO good!!
google avatar

Holly R.

Yelp
Great Gelato shop in North Scottsdale. A large assortment of flavors, have tried several. But keep going back to the Lavender. Not the easiest flavor to get right, but That's Amore has done it.
google avatar

Sharon B.

Yelp
We have been living out of state and just returned to AZ recently. We couldn't wait to visit one of our favorite sweet treat spots; That's Amore! This family run business has the BEST gelato! We had company over for dinner last week and served their limoncello gelato for dessert. Everyone enjoyed it. Last night my husband and I went for dessert. He had a mix of lime and raspberry. He said it was very good. I had the stracciatella(not sure of spelling, but it is a chocolate chip) and caramel combo. It was delicious! The price is reasonable and customer service is the best! They were very sensitive and concerned about my gluten issue.

Stoshiola K.

Yelp
New owners are pretty odd. They hire young kids then ghost them. My daughter worked here (giving up all Her weekends) just to be completely ghosted one day. It was her first job and really liked her coworkers so she was pretty upset. She tried to reach out to Anita (the owner) a couple of times just to be ignored. Since this was my daughter's 1st job I called to see what happened and looking for feedback so she can learn from the experience. I was told by Anita's husband that he "thought Anita reached out" and that they just didn't have the hours to give. (Yet they just hired someone else that week) Later one of my daughter's friends who worked there told them they thought she was too slow. My daughter was surprised because they told her she needed to slow down which she thought was odd as the line is always out the door. Either way, owners need to grow up and have actual conversations with their young employees. Help them learn by teaching them and being a good example. Ghosting these kids is plain out rude and immature. (Since my daughter left they have done this to a few other kids as well- just toss them aside like pieces of garbage with no explanation) Real nice

D G.

Yelp
I absolutely love this special place. Their gelato is the best in the state. And check out this ice cream cake! Their decorator is a very talented young man named Roy. If you are in the market for a custom made cake, please visit them. You will be thrilled with the results.

Yelp
OMG yesssssss If you are looking for a Gelato spot- look no further. Words don't do the justice. So creamy you'd think it's choc full of calories. Definitely will be a regular!! Taking a friend tomorrow.

Joe C.

Yelp
Showed up just before close because the family and I were craving gelato. I did some research and saw great reviews at (That's Amore Gelato). Let me tell you, they did not disappoint. The place is clean, the vibe and atmosphere are perfect! Great selections of fresh gelato and the closest I've had since being in Italy. Thank you!

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for years; way back to high school days and it never disappoints. It is the most delicious and creamy gelato. The owners are beyond friendly (once upon a time, they knew me by name), it's always clean, and the flavours are truly yummy. Get yourself some gelato from here!!

Yelp
Discovered a hair in my gelato.. needless to say lost my appetite. No refund offered.

Yelp
So, again - I am visiting the area playing golf with my friends - so we are searching for these kind of fantastic little gems to enjoy. This spot is amazing! The line out the door was a clue - but the wait is easy and the most worthwhile time I spent off the golf course. I had the hazelnut and I had a vanilla affogato - it was perfect. I have never had gelato that good - so smooth and rich and flavorful. Completely blew my mind. This is another place I will visit again as soon as I am back in the area. That's Amore is a forever spot for this guy. Just wow.
google avatar

Nadine Y.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST gelato place in Arizona. They have a wide variety of flavors that all taste authentic and delicious. My go-to is the pistachio and bacio (light chocolate & Nutella). Today we got the affogato, one with vanilla gelato and one with bacio gelato. YUM! The espresso was a perfect pair!!

Yelp
The colorful display of gelato catches your attention upon entering the door. Keep going, and you will see Italian candy and desserts. There is extremely good gelato at That's Amore Gelato, and the desserts are just as tasty as well. The candies are imported, but all the other treats are homemade daily by the same Italian family that runs this shop. It is so tempting to try all of the gelato flavors, but you are limited to only three samples. A large comes with four flavors, but surprise yourself if you are one who likes to sample the gelato before getting it. All of the flavors are good, and the texture is perfectly smooth and silky. My personal favorite flavors here are hazelnut and mint chocolate chip. I prefer getting gelato over the baked goods, but the tiramisu is amazing as is the cannolo. Regardless, all of the treats are decadent without being too rich. A little taste of Italy is found at That's Amore Gelato. Just make sure to double check that the shop is open before coming on a summer day as the hours vary during the slow season. You can also stock up and take a quart home, but the gelato tastes best when you experience it right away in the lovely shop.
