The Best Pizza in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"If it’s traditional, true-to-form Chicago deep dish pizza you’re craving, look no further than That’s Amore, Metairie’s classic, family-oriented spot for all things Italian and New Orleans, all on one menu. This deep dish is as deep as it gets — some say it’s the best they’ve had outside Chicago — with high edges and chunky sauce, and just as crispy and buttery as it should be. It also serves NY-style if that’s your preference, however, and yummy subs." - Eater Staff

Google
First time in the restaurant, and on a positive note, we found the food to be good. On the negative, the food was tepid at best, and it took a couple of hours to actually get food. Clearly they were overwhelmed by their success, and will need a great many adjustments to maintain a steady customer base.

Google
Chicago Deep Dish was incredible!! Word to the wise, call ahead of time. This particular pizza will take 45 minutes to bake to perfection!! You can pre-order. Great service too!! The Great Chicago vs. NY debate right at your table!! (Chicago all day for me!!)

Hidden gem right in the middle of Metairie! Absolutely delicious food, quick service with a friendly smile, and generous portions. Easy wheelchair access and parking. Can't ask for much more than those!

Google
We decided to try the deep dish pizza here while running some errands in the area. We got a 7in veggie (it takes 45 minutes and you can pre-order) so we asked the waitress if we could go run another errand and come back. No problem! We returned about 20 minutes later to our table as we left it. The pizza was yummy and SO FILLING. Do not underestimate the size! We also ordered the gumbo, it was thick and delicious, and the sweet potato fries, crispy and not floppy like most establishment. The staff was wonderful and packed up our left overs. She even gave us some cookies before we left! Lovely place and we will return!

Google
Cool little mom and pop Italian restaurant outside of NOLA. Service and Atmosphere were both great. My one nitpick that I have is the New York style pizza. It was “meh” at best. However the Chicago Deep Dish was to die for. It tasted identical to the real thing!

★★★☆☆ Visited That’s Amore Pizzeria in Maurice, Louisiana on a Friday night while in town for Father’s Day weekend. It was our first time trying the place, and overall, the experience was just okay. Service was mediocre—nobody greeted us with drinks when we sat down, and our server only came by maybe twice the entire time, even though there seemed to be extra staff helping. We ordered the cheese sticks and spinach dip as appetizers, but both were underwhelming. Nothing to brag about—definitely felt like something to skip. My sister wasn’t impressed with her pasta either. Maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes since it’s a pizza spot, but when appetizers and pasta don’t land, it doesn’t inspire much confidence to try again. With so many options out there, especially in surrounding areas, this place just didn’t stand out. Probably wouldn’t return.

Google
The Deep dish shrimp Alfredo is interesting and tastey. I would like to order again... Yet, I pre order 45 minutes in advance got there, paid (included tip); was told it will be a "a few minutes" I sat by the counter near all 5 servers waited 45 more minute until I realized my order was seating inside the orders that are ready and kept warm next to the counter. I alerted the Server and was told "didn't see you were here" no apology. If you order from here be aware of the service.

Google
We come here often and usually the owner is here. He a super nice guy and usually no problems. However tonight we sat at the bar like usual and 10 min goes by and we had to ask for a menu. The bar tender was rude so I read of the appetizer and drinks we opted to grab a pizza to go. Atmosphere is horrible tonight. However the pizza is usually really good so hopefully the front attitude does not reflect the back tonight

Yelp
I had food here once before as a To Go meal. My friend and I had split the deep dish pizza and the beignets! I was in the area and feeling reminiscent of the Pizza Beignets and I decided to place a To Go Order through Yelp. Unfortunately Yelp didn't go through by the time I got there, so I opted to wait for the food and eat in instead of taking it to go. I also ordered Spaghetti and Meatballs from the lunch menu. The food was very satisfying and the lunch portion of the Spaghetti and Meatballs was perfect! I probably could have finished it all, but I was also enjoying the Pizza Beignets. The servers were super nice and directed me to choose any table and brought over water right away. They also anticipated my needs and brought my a To Go container without me asking. Service: Very good! Drinks: There's a full bar Outdoor Seating: No Parking: Parking lot outside

Yelp
I went here on a whim one day. I ordered a mushroom calzone. It was huge and I got excited because it looked so good. Then I took my first bite and it was just baked dough. It was so disappointing! There was hardly any filling and it was very bland. The service was nice and the atmosphere was nice. I will definitely try it again maybe a pizza next time!

Yelp
Delicious beyond words. The deep dish pizza tastes just like Lou Malnati's in Chicago. I've always had a great experience here. Excellent service and inviting atmosphere. Even during COVID, they were open but only delivered food to your vehicle, which was very nice. The pizza and chicken parmigiana were great and the food is always hot and fresh. We will definitely be returning here again.

Yelp
This place brings me back to my roots in an old style vintage restaurant. A customer service here is beyond great I would say fantastic.. the food grade A and I mean it for awesome. I have nothing to say here I can tell they treat every customer with respect and a timely manner. I will highly recommend this place. This is my first time here and I will be coming here biweekly at a minimum.

Yelp
The service was really good here. The staff was friendly. We started with pizza beignets and the wings. The pizza beignets were my favorite. They were soooo good. They were pillowy soft, buttery, and cheesy on the outside and so flavorful on the inside. The wings were also a hit. They were my niece's favorite. She said she would come back everyday just for the wings lol. We got the deep dish pepperoni pizza. When you get a deep dish they tell you ahead of time that it's going to be like a 50 minute wait. The wait time flew by. It was worth the wait. The sauce is so good, the crust is so soft yet crunchy, and it's super cheesy. If you don't like a lot of cheese the deep dish pizza isn't for you but if you're a cheese lover then this might be your jam.

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The food was amazing, will definitely be returning! The deep dish was worth the wait!

Yelp
Really good salad and excellent pizza. Everything I've had here has been tasty and well prepared. I look forward to going back. The servers are courteous, attentive and helpful. The ambulance is cozy and laid-back.

Yelp
Great service and good food. It's pretty spacious in there and great for large parties. The chicken also is really good. Enjoyed the calamari as well.

Yelp
I had a taste for pizza so I decided to try this place out. A group of lovely older ladies were playing bingo, but I was able to find an empty table and the bingo did not bother me. I came here for the Chicago style pizza. I ordered a 7' pepperoni. My server informed me that I would have to wait 45 minutes for this so I decided to order some wings. The wings were fried to perfection; crispy, crispy. My server kept me informed on how many minutes I had until the pizza was ready. When my pizza came out, it was gooey and crunchy; one really only needs a slice of it to be full. They gave us two cookies to-go. Their service was ok. A taste of Chi-town in NOLA!
google avatar

Meghan D.

Yelp
Everything I ate at That's Amore was delicious! From the mozzarella sticks to the spinach dip to the Chicago style to the New York style, there was not one bite I did not enjoy! And the service was great! I will definitely be back to explore the menu!

Yelp
Updating my previous review. We got a NY pizza to go and it was completely different from the first one we had at the restaurant. The crust was much thicker and it didn't taste the same or as good. Taking off some stars for consistency. The pizza has to be the same every time!
google avatar

Mystery S.

Yelp
Surprisingly good! Upped my standard for pizza and oysters now. We both will return soon.
google avatar

Lindsey B.

Yelp
I love this place. Their pizza is so good! The Chicago style really is delicious but be prepared to order it ahead of time. Their appetizers and salads are tasty and they have a good ambiance inside if you decide to sit. Everyone working here was very nice.

Tracy B.

Yelp
We tried the deep pizza and it was delicious. The service was good and the place was clean

Yelp
We ordered pizza from here a couple of years ago, and it was descent pizza. We recently ordered (june, 2024) two 16'' specialty pizzas, and OMG! they should not be called pizzas! They were horrible, the dough was so hard cardboard like. the toppings were good, but with such awful dough, the pizza is ruined. It was so sad, we threw away 90% of the pizza, and we never waste food like this! Not sure if it was change in ownership but you need to do better. You cannot sell a pizza with a dough that is like cardboard. The texture looked like the already made dough from the store.

Yelp
We really went for the deep dish but didn't give ourselves enough time and decided to just get NY style. I'm not sure where in NY this is supposed to be based on but it wasn't what I expected. Crust wasn't very thin and was very crispy, not pliable like the NY style I expected. Flavor was fine but didn't blow my mind. Enjoyed the fried ravioli. Staff was good, maybe a little too eager to clear our plates but I expect they have a high turnover for tables.

Julie H.

Yelp
We always get the cauliflower crust pizza and meatballs. 10 out of 10 every time. We crave it once a week.
google avatar

Ashleigh J.

Yelp
I feel they have gone down hill. The fried ravioli was good, not delicious. My son's pizza was good. But mine was completely raw in the center. The waitress did offer to recook it, but I wasn't feeling it. Then they charge $4!!! Four Dollars for ONE scoop of ice cream. Really???
google avatar

Coreyunta H.

Yelp
Chicago style deep dish pizza one of the best styles of pizza I've ever hade. Full of flavor. Service was pretty good. Overall atmosphere was decent as well.
google avatar

Yelp
I think this was the best pizza in Louisiana hands down. It's worth a long drive to go here. The service was amazing, the food, OH MAH GOD THE FOOD. Be ready to take a nap afterwards in pure bliss because the bread, will fill you up. We got a deep dish meat lovers, the garlic bread, AND when our server learned we drove from far away she even gave us some free cookies to go. *muah* 5/5 The restaurant itself is very clean. Which is rare for pizza places. I cannot wait to go back and I'm currently drooling thinking about my next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Didn't like ok the pizza at all compared to other independent pizza restaurants in the area. Nice people though!

Patrick B.

Yelp
Amazing deep dish pizza, every time. Five stars! Online ordering was easy. My favorite is the deep dish chicken Alfredo, which I think is their best.

Yelp
My wife and I dined here tonight. Had Amy as our server who was a very nice lady and gave perfect service. It's a cozy type of place so you feel like you're in your neighborhood spot. We are from Michigan and know pizza. Being so close to Chicago we were craving the deep dish style. Man did they deliver. Tons of cheese, light bakery fresh dough and the perfect tomato sauce. I would run, not walk to get here if this is what you're craving. Prices are very fair and the menu has great selections. Thank y'all for a delicious meal.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
I just don't get the hype. Ordered a deep dish supreme pizza and it was just ok. The bottom of the crust was soggy and the dough was tough. I ended up scraping the toppings out and just eating it that way. Very disappointing. My SIL got a calzone which he said was good and my daughter and granddaughter each had a small pizza. They were ok but nothing to write home about. Honestly, the pan pizza at Dominoes is better.
google avatar

Jay T.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza we've had anywhere! We were in New Orleans for a long weekend and wanted something other than Cajun food. Chicago, deep dish style pizza was exactly what we needed! This neighborhood, Italian pizza joint served up delicious, thick, gooey, meaty, crispy perfection!
google avatar

Bradley A.

Yelp
We had a good time here. Great beer deals served in fish bowls. Also a fish bowl of Dr Pepper for my son. Pizzas are well priced. Lots of cheese and toppings. Taste is good not great. Enjoyed the fried cheese ravioli. Nice people. Lots of locals.

Yelp
Amore Closed the one on the north shore, so had to make a must stop to eat here when across the pond. Didn't disappoint at all, the place was very busy for lunch, I had the lasagna, and left very satisfied. Food was quick and delicious. Getting the check took time though. Again will be back for sure
google avatar

Brooks W.

Yelp
We love That's Amore! For an appetizer, we always get the Fried Ravioli. Everyone loves it. It's fried cheese ravioli with a marinara sauce. This time we also got the Caesar Salad (large) and Pepperoni Pizza (10 inch). Both were very good. Additional things to note: 1. You can get Creole Creamery Ice Cream here for dessert 2. You can get Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza (rather than the thin crust we got) Go and support Darren and the entire team at That's Amore, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Dayana M.

Yelp
The deep dish was nice and cheesy. Surprisingly I did feel it was under seasoned for some reason, like they forgot to salt the crust or something. Lacked a bit seasoning for sure, few peeps I was with had same opinion. Service was ok ... not the best not the worst. Overall it's a nice place to have a deep dish pizza.

Desiree B.

Yelp
Fantastic service and great food! Always consistent and delicious! A hidden gem in Metairie.

Yelp
The last time I had deep dish pizza in Chicago was 2016. I've been craving it since then. About 2 years ago, my girlfriend had a work trip and spent a few days in Chicago. She was supposed to bring back three pieces of deep dish pizza for me but got drunk with her coworkers and decided to gobble up my pizza as a midnight snack...like Hungry Hungry Hippos. About 6 weeks ago, I stumbled upon this restaurant one day for lunch while renovating a house nearby. I noticed they had Chicago style deep dish pizza on the menu. I waited until I had an open Friday and took my girlfriend for date night. We knew that we had to wait 45 minutes for the pizza but in that span, the owner came up and talked to us for about 15 minutes. The owner couldn't have been friendlier. This Is the best Chicago style deep dish pizza in the New Orleans metro area. In comparison, Midway Pizza on Freret Street is basically "Pizza Hut pan pizza on steroids". If you're looking for Chicago style deep dish pizza, this is your spot.

Yelp
Went there last night for my bd at 6:30. Several tables available but staff told us kitchen was 30 mins behind. So we figured we'd sit at one of tables order some beer and wait till we can order. We were told you can't sit at table and wait. There's no place else to wait except outside. So we just left. Wow very disappointed we couldn't eat their delicious food.

Yelp
Definitely a neighborhood pizza joint. Very casual, good pizza vibe. We were seated immediately and waited on. Wide variety of sodas (fountain & plastic bottles) They even had Barq's Diet Rootbeer -- that's def a win! We ordered side Caesar salads and a 16"Supreme pizza minus Shrooms and added Garlic. Waitress seemed a lil' pre-occupied. OK.....So....After reading all the reviews, we were expecting a delicious, flavorful pizza ... We were very disappointed. I lived in NY City and had Pizza almost everyday. A NY style (cheese) pizza pops with flavor because of the cheese. This pizza was very bland. When I have to add salt and pepper to pizza, it's not good. No flavor! The garlic was minced from a jar. The crust was crunchy but I believe it was a pre-made crust. Their slogan is "Home of the great debate" not much of a debate here...one and done. Feeling generous so giving them three stars.

Chad C.

Yelp
I love deep dish pizza, and I was excited to try this place. I ordered ahead since they say it takes 45 minutes to prepare. I waited and arrived 44 minutes later for pickup. When I got to the restaurant I looked around to see If anyone was having the deep dish pizza. NO one was! only the regular crust. I live ten minutes away, and when I got home pizza was cold. The crust was thick, flavorless and hard. It was just too much of it! The cheese they use is not a good quality and does not taste good at all. It is literally like plastic. The only redeeming quality was the sauce. And it was just OK. Way too expensive! Never eat here again. Don't bother!

Yelp
The food was very tasty, however the delivery service used (GrubHub) didn't perform their duties by delivering the food hot. Without knocking on our door, ringing our doorbell or phoning (and/or) texting us, they placed the food on the sidewalk outside our door, took a picture and left. When I called GrubHub to ask about the delivery, I was told food was delivered and outside my door. Product was cold, had to be reheated and was not how I expected. Disappointed with delivery service and will make every attempt not to use them in the future. I would recommend That's Amore for the food but would use a different service to deliver it to you.

Barry D.

Yelp
I am really sorry not to have a better review and I do my best to keep my negativity to myself, but this is our second visit and it was much worse than the first. On our first visit, we got the thin veggie pizza...sounds good, huh? The pizza had no flavor. The crust was bare where there was no sauce. It was overall, bland. A few months later, we decided to give it another go. We ordered the thin Supreme. 45 minutes later the pizza showed up, cold and with the cheese not fully melted on top. Our waitress was struggling. We weren't the only ones not getting food. We asked for a check for our drinks and left the cold pizza behind. We drove quite a distance to the restaurant (we don't live in the metro area) but will not make that drive again. It wasn't "Amore" for me.

Gina B.

Yelp
The Deep Dish meat lovers is our FAVORITE pizza ever! The owner Darrin is extremely friendly and is often at the restaurant. The place is on the smaller side and parking is tight so keep that in mind when choosing your time to go. They do allow call ahead ordering. We use that because deep dish takes about 45-50 minutes to bake. We also enjoy their fried shrimp basket and the gumbo. A nice option is creole creamery ice cream for dessert which is available inside the restaurant. Definitely recommend- it's one of our favorites!
google avatar

Yelp
WOW! This spot was perfect on the way to airport and had enough time to find a place to stop for Lunch. Thanks Yelp! I will be back to try more of their delicious menu items. Staff was so friendly.

Yelp
Excellent!!!! It was my birthday, I love Chicago deep dish and everything Italian. So of course I wanted to go to the original place where New Orleans started getting into the deep dish pizza game. Before I get into the food, I want to talk about the great service we had while we were here! Our waiter was amazing, attentive, and on point. Everyone was helping around the restaurant and I really got a feel that this was a true family restaurant. Everyone in our party was talking about how great the service was. They even got the whole restaurant to sing me happy birthday! Haha, great job. Now, is the deep dish pizza truly legit? The answer is a absolutely! The cheese pull was perfect, it was flaky and delicious. I love the touch of garlic seasoning on the crust, which makes finishing off a slice that more appeasing. I truly enjoy this pizza and am super happy to have deep dish pizza place to come to for my birthdays! Please give this place a try. It is truly a great experience!

Apathy ..

Yelp
Updating this for 2023. Was very disappointed with the wings in 2023. Not only has the price jumped about 6$ for the 20pc wings since the last time I got them but they were shrinkflated beyond belief. I literally busted out laughing that I paid 21.84$ for these after tax. Did you hit the chickens with a shrink ray or something? At least 14 wings were smaller than my pinky finger. Place has good pizza but the wings are an absolute rip off in 2023.

Britt C.

Yelp
Great food and great service. Pizza was great, I'd rate a solid 8.75. If you order a large pizza plan to have 10 people to eat it. The only reason they're receiving 4 stars instead of 5 is because they had open parking spots right in front, but I had to pay a valet person to park in one of the open spots. Kinda silly

Yelp
Co worker and myself decided to try for lunch based off of recommendations from locals. We arrived a little after opening, so there was plenty of seating which concerned us a little, but others trickled in as the lunch hour progressed. We found the staff to be friendly and they made sure to keep an eye on us to ensure we were well taken care of. We decided on the Chicago style deep dish meat lovers pie. We were warned that it would take 45 minutes which was fine and honestly gave me reassurance that it would be true deep dish. The pie came out steaming hot with cheese oozing from all corners. YUM!! I was a little surprised to see it in the shape of a square instead of the traditional circle, but figured this was their own spin. At first bite I found that they definitely don't skimp on the meat. The pie was full of meat and cheese. Unfortunately, the more bites that I took it became obvious the sauce tasted burnt which explains the three stars. I have eaten Giordanos and Lou Malnati's and the like many times and That's Amore isn't on that level, but it's decent. I may try it again to see if the burnt sauce taste was just a fluke.

Yelp
This place offers both Chicago and New York style pizza. Given that the latter is far easier to find, I was surprised to see so many people with thin crust pizzas when I dropped in for my takeout. I came for the deep dish, 100%. It is legit, with a huge pie-like crust, a massive amount of cheese, and the sauce on top as one sees in Chi-town. But honestly, it was overindulgent and didn't taste that great. The flavor of the sauce was nowhere near the best Chicago-style places, and though the cheese does stretch dramatically, frankly it was just more than I wanted and it took forever to get through the pizza. The salt factor was significant, but otherwise, I just didn't taste the ingredient quality. The obvious comparator is Midway, which puts their cheese more conventionally on top but I think tastes a tad better. Neither matches up to the Chicago giants. Of note, google maps seemed a tad confused about this address and led me astray; it's near Clearview Parkway, not near the Ponchartain Causeway.

Yelp
If your into a saltine cracker crust with some canned sauce and pre shredded plasta-cheese then this is the spot for you. How does the saying go? Jack of all trades, master of none. That's what this New Orleans/Chicago/New York place is. It serves all these regional cuisines poorly. Very poorly. We went there based on a recommendation about their deep dish pizza however when we got there and realized it would take over 45 minutes to get one and we did not have that kind of time so we ended up ordering their "New York style" pizza. I'm not sure why they refer to it as New York style, as it was so far from New York that you could possibly get. I would refer to its style as more like frozen pizza style, and not even DeGiorno style. More like red Baron style, and that's still giving them a compliment. I'm kind of thinking high school lunch in a poor inner-city style pizza, not even the trash that you get at gas stations or truck stops. Their Pizza certainly gives you gas, and they have done everything they can do to completely murder any and all fresh ingredients they may be using however I believe that most of it is probably coming out of a can or a bag that was delivered on a truck with the name Sysco on the side, or probably by one of the relatives of the owner who went to restaurant Depot and threw some of that trash they call ingredients in the trunk of his iRoc. It is an insult to pizza and an insult to American Italian food. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Ordered online, prepared in a timely manner. Pick up was fast and easy. I wanted extra marinara sauce but it was already picked up due to it being close to closing time which is understandable. Great pizza overall!

I had here once, and the food was really good and the service was very friendly. Was a nice atmosphere as well.

Yelp
I have only tried pizza and wings.. which are both really good. Today, tried Lasagna! Wow! What have i been missing. Absolutely hands down the BEST! You won't be disappointed!

Nick B.

Yelp
Best pizza place around deep dish pizza and cold beer was awesome. Will be back meet some locals that frequent often and recommended the wings will try next visit.
