The Best Late-Night Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"The 1029 Bar, a popular karaoke spot, is the home of the original Smack Shack. Lobster rolls, shrimp po’boys, burgers, clam chowder, and the like are served until midnight on Friday and Saturday (and until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, fwiw)." - Eli Radtke

The Twin Cities Best Dive Bar Karaoke | Eater Twin Cities

"When a bar is all about things like gambling, sports, and serving one of the best lobster rolls around, you definitely have the inklings of a winner. Add in karaoke most nights, and it’s no wonder why the red neon sign outside so easily draws a crowd. People take their karaoke seriously here, and it’s not uncommon to have several regulars waiting to get songs in as soon as karaoke starts. There’s a communal vibe, so don’t be surprised when the whole bar starts singing along to the chorus of Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy.” Karaoke Wednesday through Sunday at 9 p.m." - Eater Staff

A local time capsule! 1029 Bar is the place to be any day. Get a cold beer and a serving of lobsters Mac and cheese and it will send you into a comfort zone like no other. Pull tabs, meat raffle, sports on the TV! This is the place. Spend the whole night or stop by for a drink before the next bar, either way it will hit. Big fan! Cheers 🍻

Google
The service was amazing! Our server was quick and kind. The lobster Mac was terrible! We have been going there for decades just to order the food. The lobster Mac was VERY dry. The lobster portion was small and the cheese was nearly non existent. Truly awful!! Please do better or at least revert to the recipe as it was just a few years ago. Doubling the price has definitely brought down the quality…. $30 really???

Google
We had a great patty melt sandwich For some reason it was my first time there, after driving by hundreds of times. 90% high top tables, we sat in the only (I think) booth in the house. Seats on both sides need to be replaced. I'd heard about the lobster rolls, but my husband - who would have had one thought $33. was a bit high. He didn't think the price matched the atmosphere, and I agree. Glad we went

Google
Small little dive bar. Great food and drinks. Prices are great for the amount of food you are getting. For 2 people around lunch time we spent around 50 on drinks and food combined. The shrimp is tender and crispy, not overcooked, the burgers are juicy with lots of flavor. Service was great, bartender was kind and fast.

Google
5/5 – The 1029 Bar is an absolute blast! What a gem in Northeast Minneapolis! From its divey charm to the strong drinks and welcoming vibe, The 1029 Bar delivers on every level. The crowd is fun and unpretentious, and the energy is electric. I came for a good time—and let’s just say, next time I might be leaving my bra! Whether you're here for pull tabs, drinks, or just great company, this place never disappoints. Already counting down the days until I’m back!

We couldn't have had more fun. The have an amazing and vibrant atmosphere. Our server Emma gave every table the best she had to offer. We had so much fun with her. And even as out group got larger she still managed to keep up with requests and jokes we were shouting at her. Now the food. I can't say this strongly enough. THE LOBSTER IS REAL. THE WINGS ARE SEASONED TO PERFECTION. THE BURGER WAS THICK AND JUICY. AND THE FRENCH FRY SEASONING I WANTED TO TAKE HOME. the drink menu is a little light but they will create whatever mix you want. And they are not stingy with the spirits. I wish I could take this place back to Texas with me.

Google
We stopped in on a Saturday night to grab some food after bowling. Loved the atmosphere and they had a good crowd, but we were able to grab a table in the tented area. The service was fast and friendly, but the Lobster roll I had was the star of the show. Planning another trip in the near future and will try to squeeze in some Saturday afternoon bingo while we’re at it.

Google
Would’ve been higher on service but the person running karaoke with Fedora was really rude to my group. When trying to change song to sing or have someone sign up, they were really mean or just denied taking our friends’ card. Not a good look with the only 3 Asians in the bar. Food, servers, and usual karoake dj with the glasses are all really great/nice though

Yelp
Great place Fair prices Diverse clientele Lobster roll is fantastic and good burgers

Yelp
My cousin brought me here for lunch and I was absolutely blown away by the onion burger. I substituted a clam chowder as the side and it was delicious as well. I'm told the burger specials are always good as well as the lobster menu, but I'm telling you the onion burger was 10/10. Good drink offerings, ok but not great service though I wasn't expecting fine dining service so it's all good. Highly recommend this spot for food.

Yelp
1029 is still one of our favorite spots in NE Minneapolis! Their food remains high-quality and the outdoor patio is a great spot to enjoy an afternoon lunch or dinner. We got our usuals, lobster mac & cheese, wings w/ fries and the connecticut style lobster roll. Absolutely delicious! Parking can be dicey (small parking lot or street parking), but we normally always find a spot in their parking lot. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
An institution in Northeast Minneapolis, the 1029 offers a fun combination of dive bar with amazing food. The original home of Smack Shack, they've kept several seafood items on their menu - this is not your regular bar food! Lots of easy street parking are also a plus. Takes cash and cards. Servers are amiable, but a little unfriendly, which is disappointing. Expect to wait a long time for service, especially if you're sitting at the bar.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
It's a dive, obviously. It smells like stale beer and there are flies everywhere. Although the stale beer smell is expected in a dive, the flies were pretty gross and off putting for me. The table was a little sticky and gross too. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. They could benefit from some light cleaning! The server was super friendly and our food came out really fast. I got the bacon mac and cheese and it was AMAZING. You cannot go wrong with any of their macs. It's what they're known for!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Just as amazing as smack shack! Can't beat the lobster Mac and wings! Prices have definitely sky rocketed over recent years, we used to come here for a cheaper meal that smack but since our last visit we realized they aren't too much different from one another. Patio is awesome, staff kills it, and the vibes are still divvy.

Yelp
A classic Minneapolis dive bar serving bar food and Smack Shack(lobster rolls, lobster mac n' cheese, etc). The combination of good bar food and lobster dishes gives 1029 a culinary breadth which is unusual for a dive bar. Lobster rolls are a must try, but honorable mention goes to the Wedge Burger, which is my favorite non-lobster menu item. Peak 1029 is a summer meal on the patio or squeezing through the place to get to the bar with friends on a busy winter night!
google avatar

Darren L.

Yelp
Went out to 1029 for a friend's birthday and we were lucky enough to get a spot that seated 8! (Most of the seating at 1029 is limited to 4 or less, really.) They had a special burger going on - the Oktober fest burger - which was topped with sauerkraut, mustard, and two scotch eggs. Boy was that burger filling, but also super unique)! Loved the fries. Service was good, and atmosphere is always what you want or expect from a dive. :-)
google avatar

Yelp
Best bar in Minneapolis. We absolutely love their wings and lobster rolls. Every Saturday they have Bingo which is a blast! Great service too.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
This place is not much to look at on the inside as it's very dive bar feeling, but their lobster Mac and cheese was the best I have ever had. The interior could use updating but the Mac and cheese definitely makes up for any ambiance imperfections. I really disliked the disposable everything as well...single use cups, utensils, soup bowls etc. Be a bit more green please and invest in reusable items ;)
google avatar

Yelp
The lobster roll is to die for. Served cold on milk toast, with cucumber tarragon. Such a tasty treat. I'm a fan of the fries but not the seasoning so I order without. The service is great. The location is fun. The patio is super with large shade over top. Highly recommend. Can't go wrong with any of the food on the menu.

Yelp
I took my son to the 1029 for lunch while he was home on military leave. I had the lobster roll hot and he had the lamb sandwich. We were both very happy with our meal. The server was very friendly and attentive . The weather was nice, so we enjoyed our lunch on their patio. It was clean with beautiful flowers framing the patio. I also used the restroom, which was also clean! 1029 honors police officers, inside the bar restaurant were some very cool pictures... If your in the area you'll definitely want to check this pace out! Oh and they have a large parking lot!

Yelp
Decent dive bar in the River North area. Stopped by to watch the SDSU Final 4 game. The service was a bit confusion, but I'm pretty sure they were understaffed because the whole place was packed and I only saw 1 server running around. After a good 20-30 minutes, I was able to ordered some wings, they were juicy and crispy, however I think either the server or the kitchen screwed up, it took about 45 minutes to come out. Drink were cheap, but fighting your way to the bar with locals/regulars acting like the own the place were a bit annoying. Maybe I'll return one day to check out their other food items and bingo which sounds pretty fun.
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
Fun spot. Until I ordered a draft upstairs & clearly the lines need to be changed. Beer is skunked. Tough to fork over my hard earned money at this establishment again soon.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
Been coming here for 10 years and it's the perfect vibe for everyone. Whether we drop in here at bar close to bar close, it's never bad a bar time. If you're coming for bingo or karaoke, definitely come early. Love the food and service, it's the best! Lots of street parking but limited lot!
google avatar

Casey E.

Yelp
It's been a while! Stopped by the other night to get some wings and a beer with friends. The wings are amazing. I recommend the buffalo sauce although dry run is great too. Burger is bomb - I suggest getting it with the Tallegio cheese. The service is always solid, pull tabs are fun, and being such a happening place, it's pretty cozy this time of year.
google avatar

Tyler M.

Yelp
Legit! Walked in and got a seat at the bar and waited for our to-go wings. Good beer menu and the bartender was great and quick. When our wings were ready we took to go and they were awesome. Some of the best wing I've had.

Yelp
We did takeout from the 1029 Bar a few weeks ago, and this place offers up some Smack Shack classics which you may have already had at their full location out in North Loop. This time I opted for the shrimp basket with fries and it was absolutely delicious. The box is packed to the brim with shrimp and fries that are all super crispy. Hit it with the lemon juice and dip it into the special sauce, and you have a perfect meal. I could eat this everyday for the rest of my life and be happy. I did not stay at the bar however, and based on my brief interaction picking up the food, I probably will stick to the 1029 bar for takeout/dining and not really for hanging out for drinks. It's very much a dive bar with an older clientele compared to some of the other nearby bars in Northeast. I will definitely be coming back for takeout soon though, absolutely incredible!

Yelp
Burger Dive at The 1029 Bar is absolutely incredibly! Easily one of the best smash burgers ever I've ever had. The outside of the patties had a perfect crust on them & they were juicy on the inside. The ground ribeye/butter blend makes these patties taste incredible. It's also cool that you can order off the Smack Shack menu. My wife ordered the lobster poutine. The portion was huge & we were able to easily share them!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Great place for to hang with friends and have some great food. Prices are a little steep on the lobster roll, however lobster in general is going to bring a high price. If your willing to spend a little extra you won't be disappointed, the Lobster Roll was amazing. The Clam Chowder was also very well made, I would suggest getting a cup along side your meal. The Sausage Po Boy was ok, not super flavorful for andouille sausage, however I'm not an expert on andouille so take this with a grain of salt. No matter which sandwich or roll you get make sure and order the fries, they were perfect. We finished the night off with Lobster Mac-n-cheese, it seemed to be lacking some flavor and there wasn't much lobster present. However, if you love super cheesy Mac, they got in spades here. Lots of seating with high top tables in the back of the house. Not that big of beer selection and no cocktail menu or at least that was offered to us.

Jay B.

Yelp
Beer lines need to be changed. DO NOT get a beer from the tap here. Had an IPA , never coming here again. Disappointed is an understatement.
google avatar

Ethan W.

Yelp
Lobster Mac n Cheese was on point. Great service and fun crowd. However, somebody attempted to steal my bike. Thankfully they were unsuccessful, but it's time to buy a new lock. Fun dive bar located in a shit neighborhood. Highly recommend Ubering.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
We went here last night with a few friends and had a good time! The fries were absolutely delicious and the burgers looked really good. Our waitress was very timely and helpful. Generally the vibe was pretty casual. Only issue we had was the karaoke dj had issues getting the computer set up and we had to leave before it started.

John A.

Yelp
Used to have one of the best burgers in TC, switched to double smash with some queso glop. Too bad. The lamb sandwich is still very good. Can't speak to the lobster offerings, tempting but pricey.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
1029 is a fantastic divey bar that I went to with a born and bred local on a night out for drinks. The drinks are cheap and the service was quick and cheerful. Our mixed drinks came in 16oz plastic cups. Wonderful. We went on a Saturday night so it was pretty busy up front at the bar where there was some sports playing on the TV and there was a vibrant karaoke scene going on in the back. From what I understand this place is known for the karaoke. They also have an outdoor patio that is great on warm summer nights.
google avatar

Shannon O.

Yelp
You HAVE TO get the lobster roll here. It's an absolute must. It's a hole in the wall....but who doesn't love that. :)
google avatar

Kailee C.

Yelp
Love the outdoor patio and atmosphere here. Dive bar feel inside. Karaoke Wednesday-Saturdays that I definitely want to try sometime. We had great service. The Smack Wings with homemade blue cheese dressing were bomb. Definitely had a kick but not too overwhelming. Definitely recommend the Spiced Stormy for a drink. Free parking lot attached to the bar. Will be back!
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Think the wings I ordered today were leftover from last night. Usually excellent, but not today.
google avatar

Manu P.

Yelp
here rn with my friends and the vibe is a lil weird but the music is good!! food is by smack shake so that's compelling, it's good fries
google avatar

Yelp
Their Bacon Mac is to die for. Very friendly people working there!

Yelp
Tuesday night BINGO was really fun! I had no idea you could play Bingo so many ways. I had heard alot about this place and was willing to check it out even though it was a dive bar. I am not big on seafood but I am up for trying new things. The staff were nice, the Bingo was so fun, and the food was comfort food. The lobster mac and cheese was filling and the lobster grilled cheese with chips was super hearty. I wouldn't say the food was a hit but the Bingo game was the real highlight and I would return just to have a casual game night and hopefully win something next time !
google avatar

Yelp
What an amazing place. Who ever thought that a lobster roll in Minneapolis could taste this good! We came and were able to snag a seat inside. It was a hot day in Minny, so no "It's cold like Minnesota" that day, so the outdoor patio mage have been too hot. Our server was very friendly and we received our food very quickly. I of course ordered their lobster roll. It came with a side of chip. Didn't really care of them, but this lobster roll was on point. They packed it full of lobster, definitely no skimping here. The bread used is a little different than something you would get in New England, but they made it work. I might just come back here next time I'm in Minnesota. My son ordered their Mac and cheese with bacon. It was also tasty and very filling. No Kraft crap here. The Mac and cheese was very cheesy, just how I like it. Wouldn't mind ordering this again. Overall, we left very satisfied and full. They have delicious food and amazing service. I was very impressed and will definitely be returning.

Howard D.

Yelp
As long as Mark (white male) is a bouncer at 1029 I would not recommend ladies going to 1029, When I raised my concerns to Mark about a regular getting glad handy with a female Patrion. Mark got defensive because this guy was his buddy. He accused me of lying. The young lady left their property before she could be consulted with. I have shared my concerns with the owner and my calls were not returned. I am forced to include 1029 in the category of Minneapolis bars whose liquor license renewals need to be scrutinized until they have adequate security measures in place to protect their female customers.

Yelp
1029 bar is a lively local bar in Northeast Minneapolis. It's one of those places where you walk in, and you know that there are "regulars" who come here often. It offers a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere with amazing comfort food to boot. Every square inch of the place has character and pizzaz (take notice of the bras hanging near the bar). The place was filled with people from wall to wall, but we were luckily able to squeeze into a few seats at the bar. We had a group of five, so we were fortunate enough to be able to find space for all of us. We grabbed some drinks and ordered Lobster Mac & Cheese ($18) and a half order of fries ($2). 1029 teamed up with the Smack Shack, so they have great bar food with a seafood twist. Both dishes were exquisite. The Lobster Mac & Cheese was creamy, melty, & ooey-gooey with the perfect amount of lobster. A little piece of advice: ALWAYS get the Smack Shack fries...a half order will be plenty! Trust me, you'll be pleased. Two improvements that can be made are the service and drinks. The service is very slow, and the bartenders are not the most attentive. It didn't help that their drinks were flat. I got a vodka Redbull, and it was bland, so I had a Mike's Hard Lemonade after since I knew the bartender wouldn't have to make it. A few of my friends also complained about having watered down drinks. I would absolutely come to 1029 Bar again...maybe not for the drinks, but definitely for the food and setting!

Yelp
Delicious Pp Boy and Lobster Roll. It's definitely their niche. Also great service. It's a bar environment so if you are expecting something fancy, be prepared!
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
Fun bar! Good drinks and a nice staff. Talked to one of the owners briefly (Scott) good dude! I will be back. Did not try the food.
google avatar

Brandon J.

Yelp
Boy do you pay for it, but man is the food good! Lobster roll is flippin' unbelievable, each bite is a euphoric experience that will have you feeling like you are floating. The Lobster Mac is similarly magnificent, as the soft, rich shellfish pairs perfectly with the cheesy pasta. These two foods easily top my list of all-time best foods, top 10 if not top 5(and making that list is a daunting task that many tastes have attempted and failed to achieve). Only negative was the price. $20 for the roll, $18 for the Mac. But what are you gonna do, it is lobster which is a pricey delicacy at any restaurant. Wings were also spectacular, but didn't blow me away like the entree's did. Overall, I was very impressed by 1029. Excellent food, great service, and a classic bar environment that completes the experience
google avatar

Cadia G.

Yelp
I had so much fun at the 1029! My experience here was a bit unique because it was during the zombie pub crawl. After we determined that the pub crawl was a flop we walked right over to 1029 and waited in a small line to get in. For how busy it was, we got in fairly quickly. The bar was absolutely packed due to the event, but I loved it. The bar tenders were very attentive and we didn't feel the need to order multiple drinks at a time. They also made us feel included and took the time to tell us a little about the bar. I've been to bars where the stress of a busy crowd is very apparent in the bartender's attitude and demeanor. Honestly, I was just so impressed with the calm and collected service during such a crazy event. I'm writing this review so long after the fact because I like to see which places really stick with me and this is one of them. I just remember having so much fun. (If you go and end up having a lot of fun, ask about the bras on the ceiling). This is definitely the place to go in the area. It saved my zombie pub crawl experience and I'm hoping to get back there to experience a more typical night soon!
google avatar

Madeline A.

Yelp
Excellent experience!!! We went for lunch and stayed for bingo. We tried the fried shrimp, shack wings, Connecticut Lobster Roll & Lobster Mac and Cheese
google avatar

Trish S.

Yelp
Another stop on the Nordeast Walking Tour with Patrick, Susan and Mike: Dranks only, and our friend Holly was running the raffle wheel. We spent most of the visit gabbing and catching up with her and she never missed a beat. We've been here a few times - sometimes for food - and we always have a good time.
google avatar

Tyra L.

Yelp
This is the bar I frequent the most on weekends. It's small but it's got everything - good food, fast bar service, karaoke, pull tabs, the wheel, a parking lot, and even a patio! The food is surprisingly fresh and not your average greasy spoon you'd expect from a place with bras and car doors as decor. The shrimp po'boy really hits the spot after a few drinks. It is packed an weekends and you'd be really lucky if you can find an open table indoors. The patio is easier to find seating but it's less lively.

Doug L.

Yelp
Meh. The wings were good but the lobster salad was not. Way over mayoed. If you're looking for a dive bar, this is your place. Was overpriced for that experience, imo.

Joe M.

Yelp
Apparently the 1029 bar would rather let one girl hold a table for 8 for an hour before bingo starts then allow 8 people who show up early and together the ability to sit and order a bunch of drinks and food. This whole saving tables for bingo thing is straight bullshit. There were 4 10 person tables being held by 1 god damn person. Plenty of other places to play bingo who like making money.
google avatar

Lori N.

Yelp
Yummy fun bar in NE Minneapolis. All of our food was amazing. The waitress was adorable and our drinks fast. Some nights can be very busy but still a blast.
google avatar

Bret T.

Yelp
This "dive bar" is only a 5-star because 6-stars wasn't an option! It's an absolutely terrific local bar - friendly, great beer selection on tap and the most delicious bar food menu. It's atypical - you MUST have the lobster rolls - hot or cold! Everything is delicious and it is a little piece of Americana. Safe and friendly joint - has an outdoor patio and lots of parking nearby!

Jeff M.

Yelp
We use to live in Minneapolis and the 1029 Lobster Mac-n-Cheese was our very favorite meal to have in the twin cities. We would tell people everywhere we went that they had to stop by the 1029 and try this meal. It was the the best. Well as the saying goes all good things must come to an end. The price has gone up again (now $27) but I was ok with that as long as the meal was as good as it had been, however, the cheese sauce was runny, there was very little lobster in the meal, and it tasted bland. Basically your getting a very expensive mac-n-cheese, nothing special anymore. This is no longer a meal that is worth the money. WHAT HAPPENED??? So very disappointed, at least the burgers are still good.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
won on pull tabs, during dinner and tried to cash out after only to find out they won't except my winnings after 15 mins. I've been playing pull tabs for 30 years in Minnesota bars and this is a first time to not cash my pulll tabs!!! Cost me over $50!!!!
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
1029 Bar is my favorite dive bar in Minneapolis. Get a pitcher of cheap beer, an order of Smack Shack wings from the kitchen, and settle in to watch the game (or some wasted youths obliviously make-out near you). This place is always packed, so there's also an awesome tent out back with ample seating if the bar is too busy or loud. Also, they have pull tabs, so need I say more?
google avatar

Gene H.

Yelp
Another TripleD standout! The Lobster Roll was fantastic..big chunks of lobster on "Griddled Milk Bread"...the bread was outstanding as well. Served with chips and a pickle spear. Very, very good!

Lisa S.

Yelp
This place is still the best dive bar with GREAT food. I have recently sent friends here and they came back raving about the food. Get the Lobster Mac N Cheese to share. It is super rich. My go to the Arugula Lobster Salad.
