Where to Find Festive Whiskey Cocktails in LA | Eater

"Far from your hometown this year but still want to enjoy the Thanksgiving Eve catch-up drinks? Pasadena’s 35er Bar perfectly distills all the nostalgia, people-watching, and de-stressing necessary for the lead up to turkey day. This sports bar lies in the heart of Old Town Pasadena just off historic Route 66, meaning it also doubles as a great meeting spot. Or approach it this way: After wrapping up your holiday shopping at the stores down the street, stop in for a Jameson Black Barrel whiskey sour and some of 35er Bar’s free, buttery popcorn in their not-so-secret speakeasy. It’s a no-brainer." - Mackenzie Filson

Google
When in Pasadena, a must see/do bar--especially if you are a Dodgers fan! Very fun and lively atmosphere, both upstairs and downstairs! Cocktails were good, too! We did not eat there. However, we did enjoy bags of their complimentary pop corn!

Google
Yes, a real dive bar in Pasadena with a speak easy down stairs, unfortunately it was closed this evening. Drinks were going, lots and lots of Dodgers parifanalia, if you care for them.

Stumbled upon this place as we were walking around old town, and I'm so glad we did. Such a great little bar. No fuss or frills, just good vibes. Drinks were great, music was upbeat, and the bartenders were friendly. Can't ask for more.

Reyna Liebknecht

Google
The bartenders were so great! I forget her name, but she does swing shifts. And she was awesome! I told her to give me something she'd think I like, and also a bit fruity and she didn't disappoint. There's pool tables, tables to just chat up, or right up at the bar, music is good as well. Overall, a good bar to unwind the night away.

Google
Great place to hangout after long day at work, great customer service and friendly staff, been coming here for years and place is kept up and Mercedes is so chill and hands you your drink soon as you arrive, love it!!

Eddy Cuisinier

Google
Nice sports bar dedicated to LA teams. Proof is all of the Jersey from all the local team famous players - present and past. Friendly staff, good drink selection and a good atmosphere made for a good time.

Travelbug

Google
Enough TVs snow case all the sports happening. Free popcorn. Not many chooses of beers. And the music is a little bit too loud for my taste of sports bars.

Henry Chang

Google
Classic bar with a downstairs dance floor. Definitely gets packed on weekends. Bathroom is decent for the men’s. Quick in and out. Got red bull grey goose. AMF. And a shot of Jameson. Thank goodness I took an Uber there.

Yelp
Long time Pasadena resident. Never tried the 35er, but decided that this year was the right time during our St. Patty's Crawl around 3:30 PM on a Saturday. Best. Decision. Ever. + Great tap selection. Seriously. I couldn't believe all the different taps as well as the ciders they had on tap. + Free Popcorn that was fresh, and popped on the regular. + Cool people. We are an older group, but it was a friendly, diverse, and inclusive group of people in the bar and working there. + Dodgers, Kings, Lakers, Clippers, and RAIDER NATION are all represented here!!!! We were there for a good hour. Made some new friends, enjoyed the company of our own group, and really enjoyed the different taps. Will be coming back on our crawl here next year as well!

Yelp
If you're like me and looking for a good hard kombucha in Pasadena, 35er is your bar! This place has a great vibe. The service was fast and efficient. Friendly as well! Tony was amazing. I am very happy with my time here. A chill place! 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Here during the AC/DC concert at the Rose Bowl; the flow of people keeps increasing. A good busy. Come on down.

Yelp
This is my first time at this bar. The main floor is mainly different types of beer and offer free popcorn. Upon entering our IDs were checked and we were told that the downstairs consisted of Speakeasy and a tiki bar. Well we decided to give the tiki bar a try and how bad of a decision this was. The menu is limited which is ok because it had most of what we were looking for but at close to $20 per drink you think that they know how to make the drinks. We tried 3 different drinks- a piña colada, Mai-Tai and the Zombie. Why they all had the same color AND lemon flavor . This was a disappointing experience. I would stay away from the tiki bar. Two starts because we explained the situation and the manager got involved, tried the drinks and she agreed and we got our money back. But I hope this serves as an opportunity to get better.

Yelp
Tony was our bartender. He was funny and had jokes. The only thing I could say is that I was a little indecisive over what beer I wanted, and Tony could've asked me a couple of questions as to what I usually drink and make some suggestions... But other than that place was cool...this is by no means picking on you Tony... you made up for it with the jokes that you made! The bar atmosphere gives me grown-up college frat vibes, which is cool... A lot of TV is good place to watch sports. They were playing good music on the jukebox. I liked it. I had a good time did not order any food... But it's a cool spot to meet your friends and have a good time.

Yelp
This is a very busy bar in downtown Pasadena. I was served pretty quickly. They have a decent selection of beers. It's a narrow space with a very long bar area. They have a whole bunch of monitors around to show off the games and you can definitely come here with friends and watch a sports game together.
google avatar

Denise R.

Yelp
Had a great time even though they had the presidential debate on every TV. Service was friendly but for me it was a guy's vibe. We did however find our way to the speakeasy and had even more fun in there.

Greg W.

Yelp
So I gave a credit card for one drink, it was a whisky sour I think. So far so good. I get the bill and it's $17.68. A little high but I specified Bulleit so maybe I pay extra for that, whatever. Did not sign the credit slip and left a $20 in cash. 13% tip, not super generous, but I'm also not from the 25%-30% tip generation. To me 13% is 'fine', it was one drink during the day, I was an easy customer. I get my credit card bill and they ran the credit card anyway? So now the tip is a whopping $22.32. Kinda pisses me off. I thought I would dispute the charge but then it asks when did I contact the merchant. Instead why don't I write this review. If you're the merchant you're welcome to reverse the charge and I'll write a glowing review. Transaction date June 7th. I'll even mail the waitress $5 as a compromise and a thank you.

Yelp
Perfect bar to come enjoy any game on their all around screens. The bartenders are so nice and friendly and the vibe is welcoming. I will add it does get packed during games, especially right now during our Dodger games!!! They have awesome memorabilia on display cases to elevate that game day experience. Beer is always extra cold.

Yelp
Cool bar eclectic people there was a bad bouncer and cheap drinks some socializing but none that amounted to anything Would I come back k.... Maybe
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
Stepped in on a Thursday night; drawn in by the energy of the crowd and music that was playing on the jukebox. The upstairs bartender was friendly and engaging. I would come back again .... On a weekday. I think it would be a bit too much for me on a weekend

Alicia M.

Yelp
I love this bar! Tony,Sherice,Roy and Tyler had excellent customer service. I wouldn't come to this bar if it wasn't for them. The bar has a chill vibe and it's good to watch sports games.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Dive Bar slash Sports Bar in Southern California. Pool Tables plus all the games are on multiple TV's and a Tiki Bar to Boot Downstairs at Night plus some of the best bartenders period.

Yelp
This past Saturday I served as an Uber for my better half driving her to Pasadena to meet up with one of our close and dear friends. My wifey and her Bestie had a planned outing to SoFi Stadium to watch Ed Sheeran perform in concert. Of course I'll move mountains for my BFF, so I agreed to this, but I had to kill time for 9 hours. One thing I knew that could expend a few hours was to find a sports bar/restaurant that was showing the latest UFC event. Finding a bar showing a UFC event in Pasadena was more difficult than I thought. After walking to a few sports bars, I luckily found The 35er, which was showing UFC's latest installment on one television. The 35er is a sports bar that has an abundant amount of televisions for your sports viewing pleasure. It is located in the heart of downtown Pasadena on Fair Oaks Avenue and famed Colorado. It is across from a Pottery Barn, flanked by Chef Tony Dim Sum and Hello Gelato, and it's across the street from Cheesecake Factory. There is public garage parking, which cost me $15, but it allowed me to park for a long duration. This San Diego Padre fanatic was in enemy territory as The 35er is an homage to Los Angeles sports teams and sports personalities. There is outdoor table seating, inside table and counter seating, and of course seating at the bar. I was told by friendly people associated with the bar that The 35er allows you to bring food from the outside, which was too cool. The female bartender and the dude who served me provided noteworthy customer service and their customer service all around is why I'm rating The 35er four stars. I don't drink, so the only reason you'll see me at a bar will be to catch a UFC Pay Per View that I didn't purchase at home. You might be thinking what a non drinker would purchase at a bar. My family and friends know my go to non alcohol drink is the manly Shirley Temple. Since I was parking my tush for a few hours to watch some pugilistic competition, I decided to purchase my tried and true plus order french fries. As I stated above, The 35er allows you to bring outside food, but probably with the stipulation that you purchase beverages. The Shirley Temple was okay, but I really enjoyed their seasoned fries. They were the potato wedges style french fries, which were cooked to a golden brown, they were cooked to order, and they were a tasty snack for me to munch on while I got my UFC fix on. Make sure to ask for the hot sauce and ranch, then mix those two condiments and dip to your heart's content. If I ever venture out with my Bestie for a concert she's enjoying with her BFF and I need to kill an exorbitant amount of hours, I'm stopping by The 35er and checking to see if they're showing a UFC event. I'll try some of the other grub they serve and I'll enjoy the quality customer service by their staff.

Yelp
Asked for Lime for our Tequila shots and bartender responded with "After I f*cken gave you oranges!?"

Yelp
Hella TVs, loud music, cool drink selection, helpful staff! I asked for wifi cuz of data caps I reached whoops and I got to use their wifi. I do appreciate that lol. I am into craft beers and trying new, local brands and they had some selections that were new to me to try! I'm not a bud light kinda girl lol like give me your finest local craft beer please. First I had the Abita Brewing Purple Haze - a nice raspberry lager, then I had an Honest Abe Cactus Kooler mead! We also discovered a brand called Happy Dad hard seltzer lol, the watermelon flavor is so tasty! Plus electrolytes lol. Staff is happy to give samples of stuff if you're deciding on a drink. Overall had a cool experience here!
google avatar

Leticia B.

Yelp
Good spot for hanging out playing pool and seeing locals. Nothing fancy and truthfully a little overpriced. Dove bars are supposed to have cheap drinks. This isn't that place
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
35er in Pasadena is a solid bar with a casual vibe. The line wasn't too bad when I went, although there were some rude patrons--likely just a result of too much drinking. Drinks are decently priced, and the venue has a cool layout with a basement area and a back section for smoking. Overall, it's a decent spot for a night out if you're looking for variety in one location.
google avatar

Hugo C.

Yelp
The two security guards are just racist, period. Both of thm just get close to my ears and said Ching Ching chong Ching Chang. At first i thought it was because of the music was too loud that i couldn't understand, and they said it again! I said what the fuck and they were just like "We're all cool man!" What should i say? Should I say "Well Well Well" back to them? Nasty as hell! Will never come back!
google avatar

Carissa A.

Yelp
Would give 1 star if I could. I used to come here all the time pre covid & haven't been back in years but now won't be back at all. The vibe isn't the same and the staff that were downstairs were rude as fuck. Not the same bar anymore
google avatar

Jeanette A.

Yelp
Nice prices and friendly staff that remembers your drink preferences even if you don't come in weekly. I love that they have popcorn, and their beer bucket deals are great. I've been coming here for a while and will continue to. It's also pretty awesome that there's a speakeasy and Tiki bar downstairs. Three bars in one building.

Yelp
Great little bar! Nice bartenders and nice little patio in the back for smokers! Was visiting for a conference but went back to the 35er twice because of the fun time we had!
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Great sports bar in the heart of Pasadena. They have free popcorn and are always playing the most important sports games. The bartenders are nice and so is the crowd that frequents this place (myself included).
google avatar

Joe Y.

Yelp
This is listed as a dive bar, but in some ways it's a sports memorabilia museum! There are tons of bobble heads, jerseys, etc decorating the bar. The group of guys I was with appreciated the whiskey selection as well as the pool tables. Overall, this is a great bar to stop in for a late night drink assuming no drama. During my visit, the bouncer had to throw a guy out of the bar for some reason and on a subsequent night, the bouncer was actively arguing with someone at the entrance so we decided to go somewhere else...I guess that's why it's a "dive bar"!
google avatar

Gloria M.

Yelp
Do not go downstairs. The bartender doesn't know how to make drinks. Horrible horrible horrible!!!!
google avatar

Sierra J.

Yelp
We absolutely love Tony (a white guy with a bit of some seasoning). The vibe here is everything. It's very welcoming for to be my fully Black and fun self. It may look slow, but come in get your favorite songs on (don't be shy) and vibe out. If Tony is there, you're 100% percent guaranteed to have fun. Can't wait to visit LA again and come!
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
This spot is a staple in LA. If you have never heard of it you either are visiting or you never stepped foot in Pasadena. It is a traditional sports bar equipped with a juke box, pool tables, and a speakeasy downstairs. It's always a good vibe here. The food is nothing special, but then again...it's not known for it either. The bartenders at night are good ppl and have a heavy pour. Pretty decent service.

Yelp
Single women: DO NOT COME HERE!!!!! Came here on a Saturday night, paid the $10 cover since their was a UFC fight (the reason we went). When we got in, it was pretty busy but looked like most people had been their for a bit and we could still easily maneuver through the place. We found 2 seats all the way in the back with plenty of TVs around us to watch the fights. Hubby went and got 2 beers and was back relatively quick considering how busy they were. Beer was served in plastic cups and a great temp. BUT $8.50 for a draft beer????? C'mon! That is pure highway robbery!!! Enjoyed most of the main card of fights until it started getting busier and busier. We were seated right by the stairs to head to lower area. Saw a good amount of people heading down. The one younger bouncer was controlling the backdoor and was chill and very nice. Once the older bouncer (Hector/Victor??) came to the back area, is when my experience took a turn. He was such a pig!!! Talking about BDE/the size of his man parts and other things that I won't mention. Mind you, we were a good 6-8 ft away, their was major UFC fights on and the bar was now slammed.... I could still hear his vulgarity! At one point he walked away and some girls went downstairs, the nice bouncer asked him to go get them as it was at capacity. He asked what they looked like? The nice bouncer said he wasn't sure, the Hector/Victor guy said "oh I'll go find out and let you know." And laughed such a creepy laugh that I leaned over to my husband and said this is exactly why women do not feel comfortable going to bars alone. These guys are here to protect and they are creating the environment that allows other men to think it's ok to speak/act like that... and add alcohol into the mix?!?!!! Horrible!!! We went to close our tab before the main fight, that took almost 10 min as the bartender kept saying "oh he was here first" before my husband lost his patience, spoke up and was able to get the tab closed. By the time the fights were over this bar was packed... had to fight our way out pretty much. Honestly if it wasn't for the crazy expensive beer and the disgusting language/conversation of the bouncer, I would've returned. It was clean, they had pool tables, lots of TVs, but after our experience: Will I return? HELL NO!!!

Lee A.

Yelp
Exactly what you would expect from a standard sports/dive type bar. Tons of dodger memorabilia which is interesting to look at. The mezcal margarita was pretty good.
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
One of the worst bars ever to go watch any sports, especially fighting events. #1The Downstairs area is a joke. They make you pay per person which is not the problem, the problem is that they put the TV's on 100% Volume and could not hear anything because of the people. They need to install speakers to make it worth it. Could not hear anything from the Fight's at all! #2 I went there specifically to drink Happy Dads which is an amazing drink, BUT! Unfortunately only sold in the upstairs area. You can't even buy a drink from upstairs and bring it downstairs. Very disappointed on this as the staff told me they do downstairs area a little differently. Told the manager why is that not allowed and he said I don't know. Seems like they are very disorganized organization. Finally the bartender dressed in her sports bar and pajamas needs to go back home and hire a stylist. You can literally see her stomach which was very disgusting ! Only thing great about this place was Nothing at all. Don't spend your money here, complete waste. Never will go back !
google avatar

Yolanda D.

Yelp
Awesome place . Needed to find a place near the Rose Bowl since we brought my daughter and son to the UCLA game . Great vibe friendly people and great bar tenders !

Yip A.

Yelp
Nice drinks. Good service. Great place to watch football!! Would love if it had a larger menu.

Alexis C.

Yelp
Worst experience ever! Went out tonight for my newly sister in laws bachelorette party, mind you, we were out all day in DTLA and it Airbnb is here in Pasadena! But the bachelorette herself loves UFC, so I seen they posted they were showing the fight here and I had so many good experiences here watching the dodger games, I stated we should go here! Worst mistake of the day and ended the night horribly!! We ordered drinks and shots on the top bar, but got yelled at that we needed to finish our drinks, we could not take our drinks downstairs! Isn't upstairs and downstairs the same place? Same company? I get the whole, each bartender wants to make money, but there was no saying that we weren't gonna order downstairs either! Mind you the bartender upstairs "A boy" was very ruid and seemed like he hated his job, and the security who stopped us, was too busy watching the Raider game on his phone out in the open, I'm surprised he paid attention to us with drinks! Probably let other things in, but drinks down stairs, "No sir" he did his job! lol Bottom line! Same place, should be same concept upstairs and downstairs, some people still tip both and if you don't like your job or there's better things for you to do then watch a pre season game, then look elsewhere and let someone else take over who can at least do it with care! SOS Management

Shaun B.

Yelp
Cool sports type bar. People were friendly. Service was fairly decent. A must-try place to go to
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
I love tony he's best Amazing !!!! Super nice !! He paid attention to us and served us right away

Bizzy F.

Yelp
Randomly decided to pop into this bar after watching a friends band perform down the street. We are not sports people and this kind of bar would not typically be something we would seek out, but we were pleasantly surprised by the fun atmosphere, kind service, and great drinks! Great selection of beer and cocktails, both pool tables and arcade games to play, and the bartender was super nice. We will definitely be back next time we find ourselves in Pasadena, wish it was close enough to us to visit more often!
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
Service: from the beginning, the dudes checking your IDs just stare at you like they're assuming you know you need to give them your ID or something . Maybe if they were wearing a security shirt or something then we know that's who's checking the IDs. No "hi" or "what's up", just faces of misery. the big dude bartender, same thing - no hospitality, no smile, no "hi", "what can I get you", "thank you", nothing. Just point his finger at you assuming he's ready to take your order. I will say our last order from a lady bartender was pleasant. She was nice, greeted us and said thank you. Food: NA Drinks: the drinks were correct we only got beer and shots so can't say much about the drinks. Beers were cold, shots were poured. Pricing: pricing was average for a dive bar. Location (int./ext.): this is a sports bar and you'll see all the dodgers memorabilia as you walk it. Looks like a cool sports bar. They have music and pool tables so the vibe is there. Just wish the service was better and made you feel more welcomed rather than a bother.
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
One of the best Bar's in Pasadena. Sports, drinks, bartenders, crowd. Just a great spot for locals and tourists. I recommend it immensely and it just does everything well. Ask about the speakeasy and private events. Just a well done business.

Crystal C.

Yelp
love the vibes of the crowd, but $8/$9 for a beer? too steep for a dive bar. surrounding areas have better prices and same vibe. I usually pop in for a quick drink if in the mood and bounce.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I went here with my bf the night of the 4th of July, technically 7-5-23. It was after the LA Galaxy vs. LAFC game at the Rose Bowl. Some guys were not happy that the LA Galaxy won lol. The music was super loud, but was able to sit close to my bf, so we could have a conversation. Unfortunately, it closed before we had a chance to play pool though. We had the Cali Creamer & Mango Cart on tap. They were good, but would have been a lot better in a glass, rather than a plastic cup.
google avatar

K H.

Yelp
Racist enablers. My sister, my friend and I were waiting to order at the bar when two men became verbally abusive after they believed us to have taken their seats (we were literally just at the bar waiting to order). They started making nasty comments about us as women, then continued with "at least she's not a Black man, because then we'd have a problem". We confronted them and they doubled down saying "you can sit there because you're not a Black man, but if you were a Black man there'd be a problem". These men apparently felt safe enough in this bar to make loud racist comments without consequences. I immediately reported the behavior to the bartender on staff who looked a little surprised, but did nothing. We immediately left when we realized the racists were being permitted to stay.
google avatar

Steven P.

Yelp
Don't ask blondie to make a margarita. This kind of joint, stay safe with a beer. Hazy IPA is the move.

Joe P.

Yelp
Came to the 35'er last night with the wife. It seems every time we come, there's always a wait to get served. Takes forever ever to get a drink. Bartenders are nice, but they need more bartenders.
google avatar

Bianca R.

Yelp
Atmosphere and welcoming locals! This place was amazing. The bartender was the sweetest. Mercedes was attentive and quick. The bar itself had lots of sports memorabilia, lots of TV's and a great list of choices. (Pick your poison) The setup is mostly bar top and the food choices were limited but good. I had wings and pizza, great eats. I definitely would recommend this place. Met a few different locals all amazing with great conversation. I also read the negative reviews I can only imagine those reviewers behavior and patience levels. This is a bar not a fully staffed restaurant waiting on you. Be kind to those that choose to show up to work and serve you.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
Low key spot with good drinks. It's a nice location to go with friends and family to play some pool and drink. The crowd is chill, and laid back. Bartenders are attentive and give you quick service even with a full bar top. Looks small but there's a lot of space once your inside. They have a great variety of beers on tap and offer a lot of drinks for everyone. It was a great time! Drinks are always flowing and I mean free shots from other patron are always a hit! Would definitely come back when we are looking to take a break from shopping in Downtown Pasadena

Cindy M.

Yelp
Service was terrible, the drinks were awful. This isn't the spot to go to. Everyone is complaining about something, it's not a great bar experience.
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
We stopped by here after Club 54- amazing btw- and came here because it's open 30 min after, till 2 PM. I never realized this place was here in Old Pas! The main floor had the bar and pool tables and the lower level had another bar and sitting area. Freddie, who works as a bartender on the lower level, was super chill and and efficient. I would want to return and stay longer to enjoy the environment and people!
google avatar

Marshie M.

Yelp
This is the Dive Bar from my College Days. Not much has changed (except maybe the prices. Always packed on the weekends and a "In The Know" music scene downstairs basement. If you're bothered by low ceilings, claustrophobic or try to avoid flashing lights, you might reconsider this venue. However, if you're looking for the full on party experience with 50-100!strangers then you definitely need to come check it out. Personally, I have great memories here and sometimes get in the mood for a cramped to the rafters shout to your fellow patrons bar. I think you owe it to yourself to experience all that the 35er has to offer.

Yelp
Really don't see the point of a business being on Yelp with outdated information. Really pointless in just being here for ratings, but not being here for your patrons. Yea not really feeling it...
