Based in the beautiful Grade II listed Great Scotland Yard hotel, which was once the home to The Met Police.
The hotel and bar rift off the history of it once being the home of the London Police Force.
The name “40 Elephants” comes from a renowned all female gang that were known of but rarely caught by the police.
The decor of the bar is cozy, well finished and has some items on display that the gang used.
The signature cocktails are named after key ladies from the 40 Elephants. I had a Compassionate Healer which was described as nutty / bittersweet / rich. It hit all of those and was delicious.
My partner went for The Daring Diva, described as smoky / zesty / spicy. All that hit was the spice, harsh peppercorn spices with every sip, I would say it was undrinkable.
It was made up from Casamigos Blanco, Corte Vetusto Mezcal, grapefruit cordial, grapefruit soda, where is the spicy coming from?
Corte Vetusto Mezcal typically has black pepper on the nose, this cocktail however smelt clean but was full of black pepper on the palate.
For £20 I would expect a better finish to the cocktail, not something so overpowering.
The delivery of cocktails also needs improving. Mine was close to full to the brim when poured, but some had spilled on delivery, this resulted in a sticky glass.
Whilst water was offered, it wasn’t free, and didn’t come with coasters, so the glasses created condensation on the table.
Here’s hoping they refine the details because the potential is all there! Would love to revisit soon
