14 Places to Find Tapas in Denver and Boulder | Eater Denver

"Denver’s original tapas bar, 9th Door Capitol Hill draws its inspiration from the many cultures that influence Spanish cuisine. Sample several bite-sized plates like gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp), tortilla Española (potato omelette) or albóndigas (meatballs) washed down with a glass of Spanish wine." - Rebecca Treon

Google
The food here truly is amazing and the service is just as good, staff is very friendly and attentive. They even gave me a small bite to eat on the house which was very nice. Unfortunately, my stay in Denver has come to an end but anyone in the area should definitely stop by, this place is the real deal!

Google
Great Spanish tapas place. Everything was delicious. We had seasonal sangrias, patatas bravas, sauteed mushrooms, muscles, bacon wrapped dates, and peachy desert. Service was attentive and friendly.

The chef really knows what they’re doing here, food is phenomenal! Service is also great and atmosphere too! Happy hour is our Fav!

If we could rate the service a 10 star we would! We had the most wonderful time at 9th Door Cap Hill! The food was DIVINE and Brian the manager was lovely to work with. If you are looking for somewhere to take out a larger group I would HIGHLY recommend this spot. We paid around $50pp and the chef team took our allergies, special requests, and likes/dislikes and put together a marvelous tasting menu that left us all SO STUFFEd. the food was flavorful and there was plenty to go around. We all can't wait to come back! Definitely come here with your large group

Google
I love this place. I have been a patron here for nearly 7 years and it has always met my expectations. The staff knows me and already knows my order and even gave out samples to let me know how much my patronage matters to them. My fiancé and I always order 5 orders of pan a la parilla as it’s one of the best dishes there! Everything there is good and we always appreciate 9th Door always finding room for us whenever we stop by

Google
Incredibly friendly staff and amazing food! The happy hour options are fantastic! A must stop in Denver! Love this small business!

Google
For a second I thought I was on the beaches of Barcelona eating delicious tapas and sipping crisp Spanish wine. While it's not the most intimate atmosphere the food more than makes up for it. Their scallop special was amazing and I'll probably dream of it in the future.

Yelp
Amazing meal!!! Unbelievably attentive, great drinks, nice staff and fun vibe! I had a group of 12 and spoke with Brian the head chef and owner. He was amazing! He built custom menu for us at a very reasonable price. We were amazed at how much food was part of the tasting menu! Since Brian built the menu it was such an awesome surprise as well. Started with charcuterie, had amazing shishito peppers, a beet salad, the bread con tomato's, pasta braves, a shrimp dish, crab cake croquettes, mini mushroom bites that were to die for, each beef, chicken dish and paella. We had the special sangria. Strawberry infused. Was amazing!!!! Sorry no pics. I drank it to fast! Do NOT hesitate! Try this amazing restaurant. It's my favorite that I have been to in the past few months!!! And that is saying a lot since we try new restaurants weekly.

Yelp
Pretty mid tapas. Everything was a bit bland, and the seafood was pretty old and stale. The seafood paella was oily, overcooked, and weirdly under-seasoned, the wrapped dates were the sum of their parts. Patatas bravas were good, but they are essentially fried potatoes with a mayo sauce---not that difficult to do well. The grilled shrimp were okay, but not particularly good. The staff were nice. Very expensive, even for the area.

Yelp
This has been hands-down, my favorite happy hour ever! We walk in, and it is PACKED! While I was happy to wait for a table to clear up, we were seated immediately. I could tell, with his high energy and vision to make it work, he was the manager and made the experience much better than I could have anticipated. While I could not understant a lot of what the menu offered, my taste buds and brain understood that it was some of the best food I have ever had. Not to mention, the seasonal sangria (strawberry mint) was thirst-quenching and overall fantastic. Was never a huge sangria fan until now! Apps we tried: Patatas Bravas (highly recommend for potato lovers - so good we ordered another plate) and Pintxos Morunos (pork skewers on romesco toast - a must try).

Yelp
The shrimp enchiladas were tasty and packed with flavor, especially the sauce and tomato combo -- though the garnish felt a bit extra. Portion size was a bit light, so I added a side of sausages. We came for brunch, and the menu was pretty minimal with laid-back choices. That said, the ambience was really elegant and made the experience feel a bit more special.

Yelp
Great birthday dinner at the 9th Door. This place never disappoints. From the servers to the owner. Everyone is so nice and the food is to die for. We asked for a special order begin paella that is just delicious. Each meal from The cheese board to the desert was absolutely wonderful. Love this place.

Yelp
It was way too long since I'd been back to this charming and amazing restaurant, although I remembered that it was a positive experience the first time as well. The portions are big enough to share so order about 4-5 to start with. Every dish I had was amazing and the cocktails were out of this world. Truly I wouldn't change a thing here and will return sooner next time!

Yelp
Best tapas restaurant I've tried in Denver. The vibe feels classy and for a Saturday night a reservation is definitely advised. Great selection of tapas encompassing any groups Individual tastes. Pitchers of sangria are available that pour a hefty number of servings, I recommend. Our favorite picks were the Salmon toasts, green beans, and tomato bread. All and all a great way to test and challenge your tastebuds and enjoy some small bites. Value for your money is a solid 8/10.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Impressive little tapas restaurant off of Lincoln with equally excellent service. Haven't experienced something like this in awhile at this level. Upon walking in the restaurant is lit but dim while the sun provides excellent lighting for company and all the dishes that come out. The general vibe is upbeat, laid back and super positive. Staff knows each dish and all the specials. Moving on to the food. There is nothing bad on the menu and all the dishes offer their unique flavors. Let the waitstaff explain it all. All I know is one of the cheese plates we ordered was spectacular followed by chicken thighs and even the pizza! I would return with certainty. Being a patron of another old 9th Door location off of Market St, I found out both locations had different owners, dishes, etc. That particular location did not last for more than 6 months and this place is still flourishing so that says something. Go enjoy the pics I posted and let your mouth water a bit. Better yet just go check it out!

Yelp
this place is fantastic!!! food is excellent, ambiance is great, and service is awesome. we came with a group of 8 and had a wonderful time sharing tapas. thank you Brian (bryan?) for your help with the reservation. everyone was so nice and the cocktails / mocktails are fantastic too!

Yelp
My second visit tonight and again, every bite was delicious. Friendly and professional service. Cauliflower, cheese, eggplant: all yummy. My visiting friend, who is a chef who lived in Spain, raved!

Yelp
An otherwise lovely evening with mom friends celebrating a couple of upcoming birthdays was unfortunately tarnished by the owner's awful attitude at the end of the night when we politely pointed out that on the bill we had been charged for 9 people for the food tasting when there had been only 8 of us in our party. The owner berated us for having made a reservation for 9 people and complained that they had to go out of their way to accommodate the vegetarian and vegan members of our party. Direct snarky quote: "If it's THAT important to you, I'll take off the charge for the 9th person." Excuse me? In what world is it okay to charge a PER PERSON fee for a person who didn't attend? For someone who runs a restaurant, do you understand that reservations are subject to change? People get sick, have family emergencies, etc. Our total bill was close to $800 so we definitely were not being cheap. Also- isn't accommodating dietary restrictions PART OF RUNNING A RESTAURANT? The fact that he was so put out by 3 members of our party for being vegan or vegetarian, was wild. If you can't accommodate that easily, just say so in the beginning and we'll find somewhere else to dine, don't act like it's a huge inconvenience and that it justifies trying to charge for an extra non existent person and talk about how you're a small business so you're the victim here. Aside from that, the food, drinks, and service were good. We will, however, not be returning to be gaslit by the unprofessional owner of this restaurant. I can't help but wonder if he would have had a different attitude and been less belittling had we not been a group of women.

Yelp
Outstanding Tapas Tuesday! Had what has to be the best old fashions in Denver! Max's extensive method of marinating cherries is outstanding. Come for Max's old fashions and stay for the food!

Yelp
Superb service, excellent food, and affordable. Loved this place! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Loved the pub like ambiance but with super friendly service. It felt like I could connect with my friend in a cozy setting but at any minute I could chat with the employees. The food selection was great and the happy hour deals were worth it

Yelp
Overall: Came here for a dinner date night. Did not love this place but I didn't hate it. Would be willing to come again and try other dishes. The space: Warm lighting. Open space. Casual nice. Service: Attentive, polite. No complaints. Food: -Patatas bravas - Potatoes itself were A-okay. I didn't realize the red spicy bravas sauce was at the bottom - it's usually drizzled on top or on the side as dip. By the time we got to the sauce, we ate most of the potatoes with the mayo drizzle and I was disappointed to not pair most of the potatoes with it. Also, I would've preferred the sauce with a touch less salt - it overwhelmed the spices for me. -Albondigas - Good lamb meatballs but nothing special. Moist texture. Heavy dish for something so small. I felt like it was worth eating to feel more full. -Almejas Con Salsa Verde - I was looking forward to this dish the most as I've had this type of dish at other tapas restaurants and it was my favorite. The flavor fell flat for me since I had a higher expectation for this dish. I felt like the herb and lemon flavors need to be stronger to balance the wine and clams for me to like it. -Torrada De Escalivada De Catalana - I enjoyed the sauce. The only complaint is the proportion of sauce to the bread was off. There were six small and thin slices of bread. Over half the dip was left and the bread was all gone. We just ate the rest with the spoon even though it was kinda too salty on its own. -Aceitunas Alinadas Y Almendras - Yum! Hard to mess with this up if you just have good olives. -Green beans - Okay. Salty and garlicky. Had a just-cooked crisp. Would've preferred no crushed peanut topping or less of it. It has red pepper in it but it wasn't spicy. -Crema Catalana - Good flavor. Not into the thick custard texture. Too heavy for me. -Chocolova - Flavor was good. There was barely chocolate "lava" in the one we got. Usually chocolate molten cake spills out melted chocolate when you break it to the core. It might've been overbaked - the amount of "lava" was like a teaspoon.

Yelp
So, we had dinner reservation for last Saturday. As the snow piled up, and, as we are both over 70 and concerned about driving conditions, we elected not to go. Went online and cancelled our reservations, knowing that at its discretion The Ninth Door can charge $10 per person and did so. Guess what Ninth Door by not asking why we were cancelling, not considering the snowfall on the ground and your greed for $20 bucks has cost you a future customer and your wait staff losing a 20% tip. Nice job.

Yelp
This is my second time dining at this restaurant, and my experience was just as good as the first one! - Spanish 75: too citrusy and taste like several shots of lemon juice. It is pretty refreshing though and suits my tapas well. - croquetas: the flavor and texture was real. You have to try this!! - churros: crunchy and satisfying. I recommend the one with Nutella inside - Other dishes that I recommend: green beans, patatas bravas, bacon, wrapped dates

Yelp
We were here on a slow weeknight. Waiter greeted us and was friendly and helpful with the menu. Unfortunately, after we ordered the service level dropped significantly. We ordered olives, a cheese/meat combo, three tapas and dessert. Every single dish was brought out separately with 10-20 minutes between servings. We had ordered the olives to go with the cheese/meat plate (and mentioned this to the waiter), but they were brought out ten minutes prior to the plate. I get that the cheese plate is a course on its own and I get the different pace of eating in Southern European countries. But I've been to plenty of tapas restaurants (including in Spain) and I know you're meant to eat various tapas together, not one at a time. Patatas Bravas are not meant to be eaten as a solo dish, they are meant as a companion dish to other tapas, for example. We asked a couple of times if things were coming out and were told they were on their way. Very frustrating. In addition, the waiter got one of our orders wrong. As to food quality we found the omelet and Bravas dishes to be underwhelming. Bravas needed more sauce. The chicken croquettes were delicious as was the specialty peach dessert.

Yelp
First time in Denver and tried this spot, everything was amazing and great service and people.

Yelp
I've driven past this restaurant so many times over the years and never went in, and now I'm regretting all that time passed! This place was awesome. Better than most tapas places in Denver. We swung in for an early dinner and ordered a few different tapas off the menu to share. About five different plates and drinks. Every single thing we had from the croquetas to Albondigas and the peach custard for dessert was sooo good. Not to mention our server and the host had the best recommendations. They were very warm and kept our glasses filled without us even having to ask. The place started to fill up around 7, so make a reservation if you're going after then. I will definitely visit again and highly recommend.

Yelp
Everything including food was just OK. We stopped in for happy hour after DAM. Seriously the interior is just ok, staff/service was good and food was mediocre. Pricing was ok.

Mark S.

Yelp
Friendly staff and great selection of tapas and drinks. Usually I go for the rum cocktails but have also gone with the sangria and wine. Good for happy hour or special occasions. Walked by on Valentine's Day and they were full.

Yelp
Wow! This meal was surprisingly delicious. We had a group of 6 in which we made a reservation online for. The location is odd in that there is not much around the area and this is by far the nicest establishment in the area. The whole group decided we need to go back - that's how good the food and serve was! The best item was by far the pork skewers. I could have eaten 5 more of those. The pork fell apart and the bread is rested on was soft yet chewy and everything was seasoned to perfection! You can't go wrong with the patatas bravas and the asparagus (no pictured). They have tapas specials on Tuesday nights. Then only disappointment item was the cocktail. Stick with wine or beer if you are going to opt for an alcoholic drink.

Yelp
I was in Denver for my birthday this year. It was a big deal as it was the first time I was traveling for pleasure since the pandemic. Plus four other friends were meeting me in a different city to celebrate. How lucky am I? I specifically wanted a tapas style meal, which included sangria that would remind me of traveling in Spain. I love a good happy hour (4pm-6pm). The 9th Door did not disappoint. $20 pitchers of white, rose and red sangrias during HH. I had to try them all! Ask your server and they will build a charcuterie board for you based on your preferences. Very picture worthy and fun to eat. We had a big enough group where we got to try at least one order of everything on the HH menu. Every bite was good, nothing was bad, there really wasn't any standout though. I recall the chicken (pollo) being a favorite bite of a few on the table. What made the evening super memorable was the friends, special moments created over food and drinks. Our server, wish I remembered her name, was absolutely amazing: attentive, patient, knowledgable and funny. She made the evening.

Brittany M.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this place. Should be a lot busier than it is. The food was great and hot. Only downfall is the lack of parking!
google avatar

Carolina S.

Yelp
This place is very intimate and romantic, we were immediately greeted and they were expecting us as we had a reservation. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable of all the items on the menu. The dishes were all good and unique but in our opinion lacked salt. The peppers with chorizo were a little bland. The dates, clams, shrimp, and pork skewers were delicious! Great place for date night.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and have always really enjoyed the food! The bacon wrapped dates are a must order and the seafood and bread is always a bit! This tapas bar with a dark sultry ambiance is a really cool spot. They are known for their drinks and sangria and their bartenders are known to have a few creative tricks up their sleeve too. The first time I attended the service was great but the last time I attended the waiter gave us a bit of a hard time over a dietary restriction misunderstanding. Overall the food was great but the way we were treated last time has given me a bit of pause to return. It seemed like a one off experience so I'd encourage you to visit for yourself and have your own experience and opinion.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, service and atmosphere! I came here on a Friday evening for happy hour but unfortunately they were booked except one table in the regular dining room which does not offer happy hour, so we'll have to come back another time. Both the red and white sangrias were tasty. Every food items was yummy. We ordered the patatas bravas/potatoes with creamy sauce ($8), pan a la parilla con salsa verde/bread with green sauce ($5), setas salteadas/wild mushrooms ($11), and almejas con salsa verde/steamed clams ($13). The mushrooms and potatoes were my favorite. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
9th is a great spot for Tapas - these plates were delicious and varied. They try & offer both 'classics' as well as new & unique items. Cool drink menu and a hip atmosphere. The only drawback (and this is not uncommon) is they need another server or two. Service was pretty slow, but because the staff seemed to be working multiple sections, etc. Free parking in the garage in the same building. (a big plus) Definitely worth a return visit. Tapas Tuesday sounds like a great deal as well

Angela L.

Yelp
Great tapas and service! Felt like they should have more people there. We got a bunch of tapas plates and everything was delicious!!
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
I am from Spain, and it is the most similar Spanish food that I tried in Colorado. They have my favorite beer from Barcelona called Estrella Damm The happy hour is really good!

Yelp
Our family loves The 9th Door Capital Hill! Always very nice and knowledgable service. The Paella is amazing! Literally this place like a rich culinary journey. This restaurant is great for a family dinner as well for a date night too. Highly recommend!

Isabella C.

Yelp
If you're from the northeast like me, the options for good food in Denver might not be meeting your standards. The 9th Door though? The food, atmosphere and service was incredible. It would fit right in in New York, Boston, or Providence. I'll be back!

Tom W.

Yelp
Great menu. Better food. Really good vibe. Only knock on the place was service - I asked about the specials on the board & the waiter said a couple of them were sold out. Didn't offer any info about the remaining specials or ask if we were interested. Kinda weird. Still the food & drinks were very good. I plan to try it again.

Nicolas Ivan B.

Yelp
I went in thinking it was going to be authentic Spanish food, and it turns out it's american food with a Spanish twist maybe, because that is not Spanish food. The Spanish tortilla was bad, it wasn't prepared correctly, it seemed more of a potato omelette than a tortilla. The gambas al ajillo didn't taste like it should, they put some sort of lobster butter in the oil and it tastes completely different to what it should taste like. First time I ever saw chicken croquettes in a Spanish restaurant, when it's always either white fish or ham croquettes. These were supposed to come with ham and chicken inside, it was mostly bechamel sauce, couldn't taste the other ingredients. The best thing I ate were the patatas bravas, and those are just fried potatoes with sauce on top. I feel this doesn't represent Spanish cuisine nor culture
google avatar

Yelp
When indoor dining was still open, my friends and I came to 9th Door after finishing up a dance class, so we were HUNGRY... also a little underdressed, but the staff here is super sweet and accommodating. We ordered a few drinks, including martinis and margaritas, then dove into the scrumptuous menu of options. Our dinner spread included: * Bacon-Wrapped Dates * Brussel Sprouts * Gambas al Ajillo * Patatas Bravas * Paella de Mariscos ... and some salad I can't remember. Everything was SO GOOD! Delicious to the point where I can't point at any dish as my favorite. I was impressed by the flavors and variety of textures, and the wait staff always made sure we were genuinely happy. I'd love to order takeout and support 9th Door when it's available. They really go above and beyond here!
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
1st time here and the food did not disappoint! Highly recommend the 9th door. Can't wait to go back!

Michael C.

Yelp
Just had a wonderful dinner at 9th door. They do something unique I haven't seen other tapas places do where when you order your tapas they put them together on a really nice board. It's a great presentation and when you're at a two top it's nice to not have a bunch of little plates everywhere. Our favorite dish of the night were the Pintxos- marinated pork skewers, the flavor is amazing and the pork is so well prepared. This is a must get. The bacon wrapped dates are probably the best I've had at a tapas place. They're also pretty generous with portions even though it's tapas. Our cocktails were great, a seasonal peach and bourbon sangria, husband got a drink similar to a Daiquiri that had some sherry and cherry in it. The staff are also great, so helpful, our server was awesome.

Yelp
This made us feel back home at Spain. From the owner's greeting and seating us, to the presentation of the food and the staff; this place was an absolute gem. They even had Estrella Dom on tap! It's hard to find a place that has my favorite beer in a bottle. but a tap? phenomenal. We ordered a bunch of small plates to share. the pan con tomate was beautifully plated with the nuestra tortilla Espanola. The tomate was crispy and delicious, but the Espanola made us feel back home in Spain. This was beautifully done. the papas were also amazing with the croquettes! we could not get enough of how they were plated and their flavors. we ended our Fantastic night with churros filled with vanilla cinnamon creme. absolutely phenomenal. The best churro I have bad in a long time. the 9th door is the destination spot in Denver if you're looking for an authentic place from Spain.
google avatar

Evelyn S.

Yelp
The food is always amazing! And the service is impeccable! I'm always taken care of when I'm there and never disappointed. Their seasonal sangria is always delicious, along with the white sangria. Their menu is reasonably priced and changes often. It's super cute inside and the vibes are always right! Definitely make this a stop if you're in Denver, you won't be let down!

Yelp
Dang I toggled between four and five stars for some time because it's just a hair below five stars but they are definitely doing lots of things correct here. Service is warm and inviting with a natural flow, they seem to always be there when you need them but never annoyingly there. Now I feel I need to explain why I think they are a hair below 5 stars because it's an extremely personally reason that may have no consequence for your enjoyment. Basically there were some dishes ordered that had copious amounts of well layered powerfully delicious sauce. I wanted to enjoy every last drop! This required more than the two pieces of bread provided with the dish. So we order more bread, 2 pieces came out... personally I wanted a loaf but 4-6 would have propelled them to clear 5 star status. As I said, this is a small detail for many but boarders on sinful for me. Happy hr ends an hr before what is listed on the website at the time of writing this and is only at the bar or at the high tops in front of the bar. While the look of this restaurant may be more on the bar end my child was welcomed and catered to with the same warm hospitality mentioned at the beginning of my review. Cocktails are extrema well crafted and have many hard to find Spanish liquors utilized that pair wonderfully with the dishes.
google avatar

Rick B.

Yelp
When you wanna eat a thousand little things that all look alike - eat RICE. When you wanna eat a lot of little things that all look different - eat TAPAS. We had so much fun eating all the small plates! They were all good, but we tried so many it is hard to remember what to recommend. Not sure of the names, but I know we enjoyed the toasted Ciabata, Wild Shrimp, Mussels, Brussel Sprouts, and Chicken plates. The house cocktails were unique, for example my Caipirinha had beet juice in it! Hah! We've always loved the tapas adventure, so we'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
9th door has been around awhile and we went back for the first time since covid. Staff was super friendly and engaging. It's a cosy, smaller place inside but doesn't feel cramped. Food was good. Not the best tapas I've ever had but worth a visit if you're trying to taste options around Denver. Great is you're local to cap hill as you can walk there
google avatar

Mercedes W.

Yelp
Get a reservation before coming! On Tapas Tuesday they have 9 options of Tapas for $8. You must get their muscles (Mejillones con Tomate) and order an extra plate of bread to dip. The bread is phenomenal. The Setas Salteadas (mushrooms) are great. Their service is incredible and I appreciate that. They explain every dish they bring out to you. Everyone I go with tends to agree that some of their plates could use a bit more seasoning. Their croquettes are decent. They have a great wine selection. Very small beautiful restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely love this gem of a spot in Cap Hill. I have been here like 3 times just in the last year or so. They have phenomenal tapas, a really great happy hour (and delicious food outside of happy hour too), and genuinely great drinks too. All the servers have been not only friendly, but also very knowledgeable about what they serve... and I LOVE that they always ask about allergies or dietary restrictions ahead of time--it's a thoughtful proactive gesture for those of us with certain aversions. The restaurant itself is not that large but they seem to have ample seating, at least when I've gone there for happy hour. For a group of 4 or more, I'd recommend making reservations so you can snag one of their comfy booths. All in all, while it's not the fanciest tapas spot in Denver (check out El Five if that's what you're looking for), it is delicious is very reasonably priced for the high quality food. Definitely check out happy hour. Also-- they have a parking garage just past the restaurant on Lincoln St.

Debbie S.

Yelp
Tapas Tuesdays!!!! My fave!! Everything here is sooooo good! Just ask the bartenders for recommendations and they will expertly tell you what is what. YUM!

Lindsey A.

Yelp
This is my favorite tapas place in Denver. Service is amazing, ambiance is low key and romantic... Everything is delicious. There is literally nothing else to say except that everyone needs to come here at least once.

Les A.

Yelp
I thought the food I had here was excellent and the wine selection was great. Service was decent too.

Joseph R.

Yelp
So much, and so good, on the prix fix tapas menu. Great service in a friendly atmosphere. Keep an eye out for the croquets and the lamb meatballs.
