Detroit’s Best Hidden Bars and Speakeasies | Eater Detroit

"An underground cocktail den with a decidedly global flair, the Aladdin Sane in the Book Tower is a tiny little jewel of a bar with seating for eight and lounge space for a couple dozen more. The drinks lean on Japanese cocktails. Luxe options like the caviar-topped Sake and Strange Divine take their names and inspiration from David Bowie songs. The bar has a large selection of Japanese whiskies as well." - Mickey Lyons

Detroit’s Best New Bars, Winter 2025 | Eater Detroit

"Downtown’s much-vaunted Book Tower revamp has evolved over the last several years as new restaurant and bar spaces fill out the hotel footprint. One of the most intimate and focused is the basement-level bar, Aladdin Sane, named after David Bowie’s American road trip rock album. The atmospheric and elegant underground space is warm and carefully considered, from the armed bar chairs to the deep booths inviting equally deep conversations. Luxury is the word here: caviar martinis with sake-infused gin, smoked cocktails, and a dazzling list of Scotch and Japanese whiskies. It’s the kind of place that inspires awe and reverence and not a little mystery." - Mickey Lyons

We called hours before we arrived to see if we needed a reservation and were told no since we only had a party of 4. We get there, payed for valet, went in and we were asked if we had a reservation. 🙄 we signed in, they told us it would be 20 minutes. Look at the picture of what time we checked in, it's 11pm now and we still haven't received a notification. Absolute wrong 2 people at your front desk. Should both be fired. Had no clue what was going on at all what so ever. Wanted to have a great evening, spend a lot of money and not have a care in the world...and what we got was absolute BS service. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. Unless they get someone at the front desk a little more on the ball and knows what's gong on. Really pissed off that my special night sucked. I hate that I had to give 1 star just so I could post this.

The space is gorgeous but we sat down at 7:15 and left at 8pm without drinks. We immediately got served a small welcome taste which was fun, but after that the bartender never even looked in our direction so that we could catch his attention to order. After 45 minutes of waiting, we left.

This is one of those amazing cocktail bars where the drinks, decor, and vibe are just perfect!! Even the glassware was gorgeous! The bartender was outstanding and we all had a great time comparing notes on the Yacht Rock documentary and Spinal Tap.

Elevated level speakeasy experience! Great collection of cocktails and high end spirits! Ambience and service is top notch.

Absolutely remarkable experience were from out of town and can’t wait to come back and visit . The welcome drink we received upon arrival leaves a taste that makes you think about it on a hot day . So refreshing . The service was outstanding and we loved the scenery. Best date night

We arrived pretty late into our evening, no wait. The environment is really nice and cozy. Loved the speakeasy feel to it. The intro cocktail was really great...however, there was quite a long wait time to receive the drinks we ordered (perhaps that's why they offer the complementary welcome cocktail). Due to the long wait time, however, our server said there was no charge. That was a great gesture in my book, so we made sure to at least tip and will be back again to give it another try.

The place has great ambience but the service is lousy. I was seated and I waited for almost 20 minutes and saw multiple parties who came in after me and getting attended. Finally I had to reach out to the waiter, who was the most cold service person I ever had to deal with. Said nothing about the menu, no similes even. I ordered a drink just because I was already there and left soon after.

I'm not sure what all the negative reviews are about, I had the most amazing experience. The service was top notch and the staff is very attentive. It’s a very sexy ambiance and my drinks were so delicious, the bartender is surgical with the drink making. My drinks were delicious. I'm going back tomorrow night! Give this place a chance.

Yelp
Phenomenal place!! Wow!! This has to be one of the most beautiful speakeasies I have ever seen. The decor is stunning. The lighting is dark and sexy. The cocktails are fantastic. Andrew was my bartender and provided excellent service. Very kind and gave great recommendations. I really enjoyed my two cocktails: Panic in Detroit (rum based drink), and She'll Come She'll Go (gin drink with refreshing flavors like grapefruit). When you enter, you're also given a complimentary welcome drink made of jasmine tea, honey, and whiskey. So delicious and refreshing! It's a small cocktail lounge but plenty of lovely seating areas to choose from. It feels spacious instead and the layout is welcoming. Well designed space. Located in the beautiful Book Tower building in downtown Detroit, downstairs by the Hiroki San restaurant. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Three floors of awesomeness - top, Sakazuki; middle, Hiroki-San Detroit (@taleofhirokisan) and bottom, The Aladdin Sane Whiskey Lounge - a super chill speakeasy. Swanky and exotic, mystical yet familiar. One fault, they don't have the best single malt whiskey in the world (Taiwan's Kavalan) but a very wide assortment including Japanese and Scotch varieties. Sublime. The "Watch That Man" cocktail - Japanese whisky, cherries and flavoring - is fantastic. Excellent service and bartending. Check it out if you are in Downtown Detroit!

Yelp
This is easily one of my favorite speakeasies! The ambiance is unmatched--such a vibe. From the moment I sat down, I was greeted with a small welcome drink, which set the tone for the experience. The staff were friendly, the music was spot on, and the atmosphere? Purely sexy. The drinks may be on the pricer side, but it's definitely worth the splurge!

Yelp
Love this place, intimate, moody, lovely drinks. My spicy margarita was delicious. None of the drinks are sweet. Just a great place.

Yelp
Located in the basement of the Book Tower this speakeasy was a terrific find!! We were upstairs initially, and came down for dinner. But then we found out there was a Japanese Whiskey Lounge Speakeasy! Well that's definitely something we wanted to check out! We put in dinner reservations and then headed in through the door and red curtains. What a beautiful spot! The decor, the ambiance, and the bartenders knowledge and vibe makes this a perfect date night spot! The chairs were cozy and the atmosphere was very romantic. I ordered a delicious drink and he chose a Japanese whiskey. That whiskey would put hair on your chest lol. We loved everything about it here. I feel like this made the night all the more special! We were anxious to go across the hall for dinner to continue this wonderful experience!

Yelp
Discreetly located in the basement of the Book Tower building hidden behind a red curtain, across from the Hiroki-San restaurant. This moody speakeasy/Japanese whiskey bar has a very mystic, intimate vibe. Lots of attention to decor detail. Lots of large candles add to the ambient lighting. Lots of references to 80's influences. Welcome cocktail and complimentary caviar very nice touch. Large comfortable bar chairs but very limited seating. Capacity likely less than thirty. Outside of the bar area there are some places that appear to be able to accommodate up to 8-10 people Diverse crowd-all ages. Cocktails crafted with care many named after David Bowie songs and lyrics. No cranberry juice so Cosmos are out. Asked the mixologist to concoct me a surprise cocktail, which while small, was very good. Service on the slow side-one hardworking bartender for the entire room. Great soundtrack, sound system. I'll be back for the ambiance alone. Very cool place.

Yelp
One of the best bars in downtown Detroit. Tucked away in the basement of Book Tower, next to Hiroki San, this is a somewhat hidden gem (it's a speakeasy after all). The bartender was super friendly and very helpful when we were choosing cocktails. He certainly knew his stuff. The overall vibe complements the adjacent restaurant well, but definitely provides a different experience. Absolutely worth it!
