Don't let the "hotel restaurant" connection discourage you: The Alderman has excellent food and stellar service, and has become one of our favorite NYC dining spots! It's conveniently located near Times Square and has a pre-theatre menu designed to accommodate Broadway showgoers, so it's perfect for when we want something a little more upscale than the usual pizza/bowl/burger before an evening out. The theatre menu is a $45 (as of my last visit) set that includes starters for the table, an appetizer, entree, and ice cream for dessert.
The drink menu offers the usual selection of wines and liquors, as well as a variety of appealing cocktails (including -- especially? -- non-alcoholic ones; my personal favorite is the Jasmine Southside). All the food I've tried here has been good, though admittedly I always order off the theatre menu, so I haven't tried most of the regular dinner offerings. And I cannot say enough good things about the waitstaff! They are always engaging and attentive. I've never had bad service here.
The restaurant atmosphere is nice, if a little dim at dinner time (some of my group had to use their phone flashlights to read the fine menu print). It's not exactly a quiet place, but it's not nearly as deafening as most of the pubs in the area. It's possible to have a conversation without shouting across the table.
If you are a bread or garlic lover, you MUST try the fresh rolls with whole roasted garlic cloves. They're one of the included starters on the theatre menu, and my group always fights over who gets to eat the last one. :)
