The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House

If you're an Allman Brothers fan (or hell, just like hood music in general), this is a place to go. All the items on display (guitars, clothes, amps, pictures, really too much to list), not to mention the house itself. Walking in the same rooms and on the stairs that these guys did, unforgettable So glad I made the trip, memories for a lifetime Took a trip to Rose Hill Cemetery as well, couldn't pass that up

The museum was much better than what you would expect. It was well organized, super informative, and run by people that have had personal relationships with the Allman Brothers. The people working there make an already great museum, even more special.

We visited and toured the "Big House" museum a while back as we are fans of the Allman Bros Band. Very cool place, you can almost feel their presence in there. And the best part of the trip was Rose Hill Cemetery where they are buried. Such a haunted feel there (in a good way). Feels like stepping back in time with all the huge and elaborate monuments. Saw "Little Martha", Gregg, Dwayne, Berry, and Butch's graves (Dickie's not there). Incidentally, Gregg's wife (widow) Shannon was there visiting his grave at the same time we were and we got to meet her. Also saw "Elizabeth Reed" headstone, (In Memory Of) ! We enjoyed exploring the town of Macon and also went to the streets where Dwayne and Berry had the unfortunate motorcycle accidents. Lots of beautiful, historic old money homes there. Found a very good "soul food" restaurant. Hope to visit again, Macon, Georgia is an interesting town.

I must say my wife and I had a great time walking through the Alman Brothers museum there was so much memorabilia to look at it would take all day. We have so many pictures I'll post a couple good ones.

Great place to visit history! Whether you like the band or not, this is a great place to visit. So many cool artifacts and lots to learn about the band. I am a fan of the band and this was amazing for me to see. The pool table in the set of photos was owned by Greg and Cher while married. If in Macon, take time to go here. Such a great place. People working there are friendly and knowledgeable and have connections to the band. Also cool to see a photo of Greg of him outside this museum after it opened. Go here!! It's a must see!

If you're an Allman Brothers fan then this is a must see. The amount of amassed memorabilia is just incredible and one could look for days and see something new. Parts of the house actually made me choke up because of the nostalgia from a time that has been lost. The young guy in the gift shop is great !

Absolutely fabulous. It was full of authentic memorabilia and really took you back to a better time in the world.

This is a very cool place to visit when in Macon GA! Highly recommend!

That's just five stars for a great museum. So much memorabilia, the staff is super into the band and ready to talk. Just loved it. I have over a hundred pictures, I will share a few.

Years of wanting to visit...it was everything I hoped for. Amazing experience. Jody was such a wealth of knowledge, kind, and entertaining. What a gem! Highly recommend visiting and I sure hope she's working when you stop by.

Take a step back into the 1970's in the home base of the Allman Brothers Band. All sorts of memorabilia in old mansion here in Macon. Self guided tour, but talk with Beth. She's great to pump for info and stories. Many locations around Macon are marked on A map given to you upon entry. Find Rex and he'll give you all kinds of great info on the band, the house and Macon in general. Good guy to talk to. Just a great place to get back in touch with some very fine musicians and their southern rock roots.

Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. So much to see and relaxing. Give yourself at least an hour.

Been thinking a lot about the ABB since Dickie Betts passing and listening to albums on the turntable. This all brings me back to the 2 visits 13 years apart to the Big House, took my son on a musical road trip a few months ago to Macon to see Marcus King, Pure Prairie League and 2-3 ABB cover banks plus Big House, Carpicorn Records,the cemetery and H&H for lunch. It made me very happy to show him the whole story and he has grown to love the music as a percussionist himself. It is hard to describe how much this music moved me as a teenager, just the tightness of the playing, jazzy, bluesy rock sound with double lead guitars, double drums, they just created a whole new thing which will hopefully be regarded just as well in the year 2500. RIP, Dickie, Gregg, Duane, Butch and Berry and play on Chuck and Jaimoe and Warren and Derek.

Must see. Displays very well done. Authentic. Staff knew what they were talking about. Walking through time.

This was a great museum with so much memorabilia about the band. They did a great job of providing written information for the non-guided walking tour. The instruments displayed are beautiful. Staff was very friendly. Worth the stop.

Completely disappointed when we arrived on a Monday and they were closed, so we re-arranged our schedule to be in Macon on Friday afternoon on our return drive to catch a flight out of Atlanta. The Big House is a great property and the collection is amazing. The upstairs rooms are replicated as when they lived there and the downstairs rooms are crammed full of clothing, instruments, posters, awards.... The rooms and exhibits are numbered so you can follow along with the self-tour pamphlet that you are given upon admission. And of course you exit through the gift shop, but it's a great gift shop! A must stop for anyone with a passion for Rock and Roll.

Great Experience with original show posters and instruments from the early '70s. Letters and mementos from the band. We also visited Duane, Greg, and Barry Oakleys grave sites nearby. If you go to the cemetery park near the entrance and walk-in Roads are old, very narrow with steep grades and difficult to maneuver on. The walk is very short.

Took a day trip to visit and see the house that true legends lived in. The house is definitely big and so full of history. Gibson guitar lovers dream place....so many Gibson's everywhere! A lot of flowers in front and back since Gregg Allman's passing, it just shows you how influential the band was to music. Bought an awesome shirt and happy to do so to help the museum in the small way I could. If you are fan, visit the Big House!

Full of great memorabilia from guitars to Duane Allman's New Years resolutions from his diary which is on display in his former bedroom. There are some neat photos that show band members standing in the actual spot where the photo was taken! With admission you get a key to a self guided tour so you know what you're looking at. Nice little gift shop on the way out also.

What a gem! We've been to Macon a few times but finally were able to go to this place, and it did not disappoint. Its worth mentioning that you don't have to be a fan of the Allman Brothers to enjoy this museum. They have memorabilia of other bands that former members of the ABB have been in, including Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, etc. If you're not acquainted with the ABB music, they have CDs of what appears to be every record they put out, including solo projects, for sale in the gift shop--along with a selection of rad t-shirts and posters. In addition to having other band's memorabilia, they also have artifacts from throughout the decades (60s to present) including fashion, telegrams, furniture, etc. The house itself is also a beautiful late Victorian piece of architecture. If you enjoy retro artifacts, you'll enjoy this museum. The museum is in a house, but don't be fooled! The house is enormous, and there are a seemingly endless amount of rooms filled to the brim with ABB memorabilia. We spent over an hour going through everything. If you do like the ABB, they have got you covered! They have old instruments, platinum records, handwritten lyrics, and anything else you can think of re: ABB. I've always been a fan but going through the museum has put me on a week-long Allman Brothers kick where I have been listening to all their albums from start to finish. One thing I really like about the museum is that although two of the band members died so tragically young, they celebrate the life of the band and their success. The appreciation of the museum for their contributions to music while they were still alive makes for a positive experience that acknowledges the dead without dwelling on the sadness of it.

There was a concert and didn't think we were going to get in, but Brandon said we could come in, made my sons day. He met Willie Perkins and got to see Jaimoe. He said it was awesome!!

The Big House itself is a piece of of ABB memorabilia. Inside you will find a collection of items from throughout the band's history, several incredible guitars, and a glimpse into the life of the band. Whether you are a diehard fan or a casual appreciator of the music, there is something here for you. The $15 entrance fee is slightly much, however.

my husband had been wanting to see this place forever . Wow was I surprised and then I saw Cher and Gregg Allmans pool table and on that table was a picture of Cher and Gregg in the hammock in the backyard . what a treat that was . What got me about the house was the rooms were incredibly small but there were so many of them my goodness . I dont see how the band could have stayed in those rooms unless some were sleeping on the floor . The stuff we leave behind when we go to our heavenly reward is astounding . The memorabilia is incredible in this place . The gift shop is fantastic make sure to see that if you go .

Mr .Potts greeted my friend and I at the Big House door. What a nice greeting. This sight is a "must" to see for any ABB fan. Very informative walk thru and a paper given upon entry explains the background and noted history of the items displayed. So exciting and the gift shop is an added plus. This was my second tour and would go again especially since new items are added . We loved listening to the piped in ABB music as we walked thru the rooms also. Have fun it's worth it! Legendary. Took me back to simpler time in my youth. The musuem filled a void since the passing of Gregg Allman. I enjoyed every minute of my visit. Being in the home of these iconic men of music was amazing.

My husband is an Allman Brothers fan. Well, fan really doesn't really capture it but when traveling south from Chicago we went out of our way to stop into Macon and visit several sites with significance for fans of the ABB's music and legacy. The first stop was the newly opened Big House Museum. The property, which served as a band's headquarters in the early 70's, has been restored and apparently opened in early 2010 thanks to grants from friends and fans around the world. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much beyond a few instruments and posters but I was stunned: the collection is beautifully curated, extensive and does a fantastic job of telling the story of the band from their early days through the shows at the Fillmore and beyond. The first floor of the house includes an instrument room, the dining room (which includes a guitar signed by Duane and Eric Clapton) and a gift shop. The second floor has Barry and Duane's rooms restored in addition to a music room with an extensive collection of vinyl - both the Allmans and their friends. There's still a bit of work to be done. I know they're hoping to finish labeling the various exhibits and are interested in maybe even having some audio tour you could tote around with you. That being said, even in it's current (brand-new) state this museum is on par with the best I've ever been too. The staff couldn't be more gracious, knowledgeable and if you have any interest in rock music it is well worth the price of admission. They're open from 9 AM - 5 PM on Friday and Saturday and 11 AM to 6 PM Sundays. Best $7 I've spent in a long, long time.

If you're a fan of the Allman Brothers, this museum is a must-see! They have an enormous collection of Allman Brothers memorabilia and its the site of where some of the band's music was written. It's a self-guided tour.

Saw the billboard on 75 and decided to stop by. What a gem! Really great memorabilia and organization of artifacts along with great guided written information. Super value at only $15. Stop by the cemetery too - it's very moving. The museum is so well curated and really captures the spirit of these classic, one of kind musicians. Don't miss it!

We Arrived at the gate only to find the museum was closed. There were two gentleman walking around the grounds I had my husband get out and talk to them, he found out that the museum was only open from Thursday, through Sunday. Once he found out we had come a long way, he unlocked the gate and let us in, we had the whole museum to ourselves! What a treat, Allman Brother's music being played throughout, they even let us buy from the Gift shop! And gave us a free poster! It was really Cool

If you are a fan of the Allman Brothers then this is must visit spot. They have an incredible assortment of memorabilia as well as the rooms set up to look like they would have when the band was staying there. Lots of rock and roll and history is represented here.

What a day! I just want to give a big shout out to the people of Macon & mostly the staff at The Big House Museum - especially to the Executive Director, Rob, for his great insight over the phone last week PLUS letting me in early so I could have safe travels back home. Another big shout out to the Museum's Curator, Greg Potter, for being such a great encyclopedia PLUS my personal photog yesterday. =) You all made my solo trip to Macon not feel so solo! Good people! It was inspirational & so exciting to visit sacred ABB ground. The Big House was worth every second of my 12 hour drive. The energy and the stories behind each display were moving. My heart is warm, & my soul is alive. This music moves me, & this museum captures my heart. This trip was an early 30th bday 'present' to myself, and it was a dream come true. I will be back!

Wow, still pinching myself. This is center of the universe for music of my youth. Could spend all day here but my fam is dragging me out. I would hang on to every new song and album these guys put out. So much fun to walk through from room to room and back through again. All the momentos. Highly recommend and will come back by myself to spend more time.

This is a must see if you are a Allman Brothers fan and grew up listening to them. I visited there this week and loaned them a 1972 concert poster from a concert held at the Macon Collisium. They graciously accepted it and displayed it appropriately. Richard, the curator, Greg, and Maggie were super nice and pointed out interesting objects in the museum. I suggest the audio tour and take your time as it is easy to miss things in the museum. Enjoy.

Agree with the other comments, and, As museums for icons go, this is among the best. Well organized, knowledgable and committed staff, amazing artifacts! This is a must see for ABB fans and those who appreciate music history and influences. stop here before going to Rose Hill Cemetery; They have a map showing the graves of Duane, Berry, Elizabeth Reed, and Little Martha.

I've lived in Macon for 3 years and visited the ABM for the first time Saturday. I wish I had gone earlier! The Big House is an intimate setting full of memorabilia and history of the ABB. The volunteers and staff were friendly and helpful. The ABM is a go-to museum in Macon. Don't hesitate to go!

Wonderful experience. More than I expected, you need at least a day maybe two to take it all in!! Very good vibe here. The staff are as charming & friendly as the museum. Just a beautiful experience. I will certainly go back again. My family also enjoyed the museum. Great place.

Very cool place with tons of info. You go in for a fee but then take your time and browse around. Lots of neat stuff to see and trivia to be learned! Parking can be somewhat difficult but we were there on a Thursday afternoon so we were told we could park at the church across the road. Overall This was a great place to visit.

What a place. The people who run this place are the kindest, most gracious people I've ever met. My son Cody and I drove 13 hours from PA to visit the museum in conjunction with a Thesis he is writing about southern music. When we told Mr Potter our reason for coming he followed our journey through the museum giving us personal tidbits about the band. He invited us to return the next day for some more information that is on the archives and not yet displayed. A wonderful experience I'll remember always!

Had the BEST time here. Could have stayed for hours and hours. The paper that they give you explaining everything throughout the house was awesome! Listening to their music...being a part of such an awesome time and band made our trip to Georgia complete. So glad a dear friend told us we had to visit.....glad I listened. Will hit this place up again when we are in town. You HAVE to go....it's a must!!!!! Enjoy being a part of an outstanding legacy. ROCK ON!!!

This museum was an amazing experience. I am a huge Allman Brothers fan and will definitely be coming back to cost. The staff was extremely friendly and made you feel at home. They have a lot of different memorabilia that they switch out so the museum is never the same each time you go. Can't wait to go back again!

The wife and I had been on the road now for a few months when we made our way into Macon. I am a HUGE Bros. fan and my wife is, as she puts it, a fan by marriage. I'd been to Macon about ten years ago to see some of the ABB sites around town, but having heard about The Big House I knew we had to check it out. We got there on a Friday, but unfortunately they were not open. We did, however end up talking to some people outside of The House that suggested we go check out the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame so we did. What a great place that is! On a side note definitely check it out the G.M.H.O.F. if you get the chance. When there we got to talking with a few of the people who worked there and they told us that The Big House was probably closed because The B.H. crew was most likely at the Wanee music fest. Disappointed we made our way back to the campground we were staying at assuming we'd missed our chance, but not one to take no for an answer I got on-line and started searching. I found that although the B.H. was closed for Wanee they would be open Sunday, so we paid for a few more nights and waited for Sunday. Sunday came and we made our way back to the B.H. only this time excited to see it open and bustling with people and energy. We paid our admission and made our way through the house. I was in heaven and took my time trying to take it all in. For the love of god, there's Duane's gold top that he played on the Layla sessions, and the Tobacco Sunburst that he played at The Fillmore. There's Berry's Tractor Bass, there's the written lyrics to Blue Sky on a wall looking out a window across the street to the same church responsible for "early Sunday morning bells are ringing everywhere". It was a huge pleasure just to meet other people to talk about music and the Bros. with as I am usually the only one in conversations championing the band as more than just a Southern Rock Band, but here everyone knew exactly the REAL importance and impact of both the band, and they're leader Duane Allman. It was after a couple hours, towards the end of our visit when I struck up a conversation with a guy about the band. I must have been beaming with joy when I showed him my ABB tattoo, at which point he told me his name is E.J. and he's the curator of the museum and if I had the time, he would let me and the wife take the audio tour because he KNEW we'd really appreciate it. We ended up being in the house that first day for almost 5 hours. We were the last ones to leave and it was the beginning of one of the best weeks of my life! We ended up staying and coming back the next day to volunteer. This is when we met The director of the Museum and Rex one of the regular local volunteers. Unfortunately it wasn't as busy as expected and boo hoo for me, I had to spend most of the day playing one of Dickey's guitars, on Berry's bed in Duane's room! At the end of the day, I grabbed my guitar and me, the wife, and the dogs headed out to Rose Hill Cemetery to hang out and play when we got a call from Rex who took it upon himself to hang out with us and walk us around the cemetery showing us all the "Need to see" spots were. It was a great day and we had a lot of thinking to do because we knew the Red Dog tribute was the following weekend and although we had plans to meet friends in FL we both thought this was too cool an opportunity to pass up, so we decided to stay and just hang out in and around The Big House every day to help out when needed. We worked the front door and the gift shop, but mostly I just shared the kind of infectious enthusiasm one has when they're doing what they love with the people coming through the door. One day a man walked in and said, "Hi, I'm Willie Perkins." I wasn't sure if I heard him right, but yes it was The ABB's road manager for much of the 70's and 80's. He was a great guy who shared stories and made memories for me I'll never forget. In the next few days I got to meet Butch Trucks, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce, and a bunch of other really great people. One of my favorite moments was when after hours of a young brother and sister playing with my dogs, I asked the young 8 yr old boy, jokingly, if he was a guitar player. He says, "No... but my daddy is." "Oh yeah, who's your daddy?" "Derek Trucks." to which I replied, "Your daddy is one of my favorite guitar players." What a time! We went to visit The Big House for 1 day and stayed for 2 weeks, and although I met many amazing people who I was a fan of, I MUST say that it was the local community of fan's, volunteers, and music lover's that I have stolen my heart and made our time at The Big House magical. We made friends and forged relationships with people in Macon that we KNOW will be life lasting. The music is what brings one to The Allman Brothers Band, but it is the spirit of brotherhood that makes you never want to leave!

The Allman Brothers Band has always been among my favorites and, to my happy surprise, I recently discovered that most of their greatest hits were dreamed up at this two-story house in Macon. Walk through the front door, surrounded by beautiful stained glass, and walk to the desk where you hand the director $8 (or a credit card), and in exchange, you get a print-out guide that corresponds with little stickers throughout the tour, a map of gravesites of important ABB figures (including Duane Allman and bassist Barry Oakley), and another map of important ABB-related sites in Macon. The tour itself winds through the house and contains an astonishing amount of memorbilia, letters, instruments, posters, awards, and even family photos. Some of my favorite items were the handwritten lyrics to "Blue Sky," "Midnight Rider," and "Ramblin' Man." The tour took me about an hour to complete, but you could easily spend twice that poring over all of the documents and memorabilia on display in The Big House. If you still have time, be sure to check out the graves of Duane Allman and Barry Oakley at Rose Hill Cemetery, which is just a few miles away.

I made my pilgrimage to the Big House a couple years ago with my daughter. She was suitably intrigued, having grown up with the heavenly music of Duane and Berry and Gregg and Dickey, but I just stood in the foyer and cried. I was home! What a wonderful, joyous and moving "museum" has been created in the former home of my favorite band! This is a MUST visit for any ABB fan, past or present. The curators and volunteers and employees certainly love the ABB! Every inch of this home is fascinating and well-done. And the ghosts of Duane and Berry continue to haunt and make this place come alive with their heavenly music. By all means, go, and try to pick a time when they are having some music and folks come back.

If you love music, especially southern rock, this is a must see. Very impressed. This place has been on my bucket list - should have came here sooner. So much to see and take in, and can feel the history and just imagine all of the stories the place could tell. Gave me goosebumps.

Came here on a Saturday at 930 am based on Yelps listed hours. The correct hours as listed on the door are Thursday through Saturday 11 to 6. Very disappointed!

The Big House is such a cool place. The collection is amazing and the environment is so welcoming. If you're ever passing through, be sure to stop by. And if you live in Macon -- VISIT. I was definitely missing out!
