The Best Wineries and Restaurants in Russian River Valley | Eater SF

"Newly renovated and opened, this bright, airy market and community space is housed in charming Occidental’s oldest building. The perfect spot to grab a quick nosh before heading out to the coast or the river, the Altamont also sells locally made jewelry, art, and novelty kitsch. Salads and sandwiches share the menu with hearty bowls like the Boho, a nourishing mix of stewed French lentils, roasted Brussels sprouts, arugula, chimichurri, kraut, and crème fraiche (rotisserie chicken or Kiawe smoked pork are also available for meat lovers). All manner of delightful pick-me-ups are available at their full coffee bar."

Had the shrimp bun and the pulled pork bun. Very fresh and tasty. Very friendly staff and lots of interesting stuff to buy. Had to return for coffee and soft serve, again very happy.

Sat back in the terraced outdoor ‘yard’ on a recent sunny Saturday. Order at the counter inside grab a seat inside, out front by parking lot, or in the ‘yard’ out back. Several umbrellas to sit beneath in the yard. Lovely Korean friend chicken tacos. Had some beer and bubbly to round it out. Three nicely filled tortillas. Tasty sauces on the chicken.

We came here for the band "Rainbow Girls" and it was a great time and was enjoyed by all, but the angle of the grass was steeple and the lawn was bumpy, (but i'm old). We got there early and had dinner. They had excellent vegan options and other plant forward food. Our table ordered the chicken katsu sandwich, the fried cauliflower tacos (order without kimchi sauce for a vegan option), and my dish, the boho bowl. It all was fresh bright. The chips that went with the sandwich were flavored with vinegar and a bit too zingy for our palate. The boho bowl was full of flavor and variety, yummy lentils, brown rice, greens, beets, grilled broccoli, pickled onions, and a wonderful chimmichuri sauce. The store had a very well thought out variety of items for sale, including books and boutique pantry items that are some of the newest items on the market. There is a grab and go area near the front with food. You can eat inside or outside. There is even a clay studio inside. I didn't find out about it, but it looked fun. The surroundings were fabulous. The sun went down right in front of us, behind the trees I would love to come back for an experience that includes more than music, even though my butt hurts, lol!!!

The Altamont is a dream come true. Women-owned and meticulously ordained. The food, y’all, the food is ambrosia, inspired by the glory of Hawaii and the bounty of the garden, every bite is nirvana. They have a delectable deli and gluten free deliciousness available. I’m wild about their burgers and bowls, and their drink selection is spot-on for tipplers and tea-totalers alike. There is plenty of space for dining. Bring your new favorite novel, your toddler, your bosom pal… In the summer, the beer garden is a happening knoll with live music and community fun. The Altamont is an absolute gift to West County.

Yelp
I gave a one Star review based on the fact that we arrived during the posted hours and were turned away because the kitchen had closed earlier. It was a long drive with hungry kids. We believe that arriving at a place of business during open hours means that we should be served. With that said, we love the food, the service and the people. This is one of our go-to places when we are in the area. Now that we know they have a quirky policy about actually being open, we try to come extra early.

Yelp
Glad that my brother had heard of this place. Perhaps he'd been there once before, but said that the interior looked different from what he remembered. Dear Hubby, my brother and sister-in-law, and I were out for a rambling drive on a Sunday afternoon last month. We hadn't had lunch and needed a break from apple picking. My brother suggested stopping in Occidental, and recalled this as being a place to get good sandwiches. I had in mind a good deli, but The Altamont General Store is more creative than that. Housed in a fabulous historic building, but remodeled to a modern aesthetic inside, they feature a unique menu. They offer various food choices, plus a roster of barista coffeehouse beverages. DH and I decided to share Mary's Free-range chicken Katsu Sando, and a side of fries. The chicken came in panko-crusted flavorful glory, with tonkatsu sauce, yuzu aioli, slaw, pickled onions, on a fresh banh mi roll. House-made potato chips also came with the sandwich. We didn't know that, and with the side of fries (which was very large, and plenty to share among the four of us), we were well-potatoed! The fries were some of the best I'd had in a long time. After we ordered and paid, we took a number and found a table in their expansive dining room. There was also seating out front of the building, but we opted for indoors. Gave us an opportunity to "see what they've done with the place". They have minimal display racks with items for sale, nodding to the general store roots. There's also a zone set aside for kiddos to play. Service was cheerful and reasonably prompt, once the sandwiches were ready. It's not a mass-produced operation, so it took a little while for the food to be prepared. We had time to relax and visit in the bright and character-filled surroundings. I'd definitely return on another visit to the area. All-around neat experience.

Yelp
i loved this cafe and still get a matcha here now and then. i had been coming here for a while but recently diagnosed with celiac disease. i was excited to see a GF rice krispies treat but when i asked about it, was informed it's all a shared kitchen and other items may be baking at the same time etc (cross contamination likely happened). just ask questions & decide for yourself if it's GF enough for ya, i decided to pass and be weary about it next time.

Yelp
Oh my this is a super find. We drove up from Marin had a great drive along the coast and then stopped at this general store restaurant. The food is super we had this amazing crab salad with a special dressing include from including kimchi yeah I know may not sound so great amazing. If you're not gluten-free don't read this, but there is amazing amazing gluten-free options including this killer chocolate caramel shortbread that is pictured here with ice cream topper. Don't walk, run to this restaurant. One of my favorite spots in the USA.. Don't miss this!

Yelp
The employees were all very pleasant and efficient. The restaurant was bright and clean and my vegetarian cauliflower tacos were flavorful and fresh.

Yelp
Occidental is a small town but The Altamont General Store is a huge space. There's tons of indoor seating and a great patio area shaded by a large tree. Dogs are welcome out front. The whole menu looked delicious and unique. I was feeling basic and got the Avocado Smash which was far from basic! I loved the arugula salad, soft boiled egg and pickled onions. The passion fruit tea was fabulous and perfectly refreshing. All of the staff was very friendly. Super cute spot and will definitely come back next time we're in the area.

Yelp
My friend Alexis lives nearby, and took me here while I was visiting her for breakfast one day. We came on a Friday morning and it was not very busy. Such a cute store! They had all kinds of goodies. We ordered: - Jammy Plate - Coffee - Avocado Toast I loved the Jammy plate! It looked like a random plate of veggies and eggs, but everything went together so well. I loved the black garlic aoili that came with the plate. We went back later and browsed the shop section, and I bought some local seeds for my vegetable garden too. Great place, would def come back!

Yelp
This is not your local Star.... We loved our coffee experience here in Occidental, enjoyed the cappuccino and vanilla bean lattes with a yummy bakers pizza. Best coffee! Make it a point to stop in, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

Yelp
Split review. My lunch was a 5-Star---I loved the Chicken Katsu sandwich...very good flavor and serving size. My husband's was a 3-star---He ordered the Chicken bowl. Although it was large, it was so spicy that he couldn't eat it. There should have been a "head's up" on how spicy it was or a sauce on the side option. (Although there seemed to be plenty of options for seating,, none were cleaned off. Someone needed to check on that more often.)

Yelp
This place is very charming. Good coffee and a good breakfast burrito. I'll be back soon to try some of their korean-ish stuff that looks pretty good. I'm always looking for excuses to go cruising around here and the Altamont General Store is a solid destination.
google avatar

Yelp
Although this cafe has a limited menu, everything served has unlimited flavor. This is a great place to grab a fab coffee and people watch, too. An added bonus is the cute gift shop featuring local goods and demand usual fines. Check the hours before you go, because they are not open certain days of the week. I try to stop in here anytime I'm in or near Occidental!

Yelp
A lot of thought and planning went into this fabulous restaurant. The food is amazing. The breads and bakery goods are a rare treat of delectable flavors. They even have some gluten-free bread that is excellent. Very friendly staff knowledgeable about the menu items. Local artist, beautiful, creative pieces are on display throughout the store. If you have not tried this place, I highly recommend it. You will be real glad you did.. Bon appétit

Yelp
Awesome menu and relaxed organic atmosphere, sometimes with live music or poetry readings. The decaf Mocha with almond milk is my fav.

Dina M.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss. Some things are very good, while others disappoint. Worth a stop if you're in the area. Hope they bring back the Rosemary focaccia. Hands down, it's the best thing I've had here.
google avatar

Yelp
fabulous place. gets a little packed with weekenders/tourists so i'm so glad they expanded their hours/days! excellent food options and tasty GF options too. love love love.

Yelp
I love this spot so much it's crazy. Beautiful, nourishing, delicious food. Great service, local goods both food and other for sale, just a fantastic vibe overall. I'm celiac and this place makes me excited! SO many GF options to choose from, legit feels like the whole menu is up for grabs. I've had the chicken katsu a couple times (gluten free), noodles, forbidden rice pudding, doughnut, cookies, hot dog - enough to know it's ALL delicious. Did I say beautiful food already? A wonderful way to end a west county adventure for our us. Hike, soak up some sun, come here for a drink (coffee or boozy goodness), and relax. Truly one of my favorite places in west county. The mochi doughnuts are ridiculous. They make homemade focaccia bread. The GF is Mama Mel's - no one is losing here.
google avatar

Chad R.

Yelp
Chill vibe, cute market to peruse while you wait for the delicious food. Great spot for breakfast or lunch with some convenient and tastes grab and go options.

Yelp
Amazing gem! Mahalo Altamont General for a great place to eat! Needed quick bite, but left full and thinking about when we were going to return Daughter had the toast and butter and i enjoyed the korean chicken taco! such a great hidden gem in a beautiful location.

Yelp
Modern style cafe on Main Occidental road! Bagels, sandwiches, salads, hot dogs with coffee, tea and other basic gourmet items, served up here! They support small businesses in this general store. A lot of bohemian goods to peruse through while waiting for your orders to be out. They also have cafe seatings and lounge.

Yelp
Yum. What a nice find in Occidental for a Sunday lunch. I'd had the Altamont burger with the works and my wife had the vadouvan chicken salad. Both were delicious (and I'm not normally a salad guy). The burger has caramelized kimchi and citrus kosho mayo which gave the burger a unique kick which I really liked. Very cute decor on the inside and outdoor seating for those of us with pooches. It's a nice alternative to the Union Hotel, which is awesome but often busy.
google avatar

Lychelle O.

Yelp
We spent the weekend in the area and decided to walk around downtown Occidental (which is really just two rows of shops about a city block long). We came into the general store as we saw the ice cream logo out front and were in search of something sweet after our large lunch at the Union Hotel down the street. Surprisingly enough, the indoors was exactly what you would expect from a general store! There was not only food to order, as well as the ice cream we wanted, but a seating area where you could enjoy your meal on some comfy couches and displays of art for sale as well as other knick knacks. The day we came, one of the local artists was actually on site selling her purses and jewelry, ready to answer any questions you might have. In a corner nook towards the back, there were more goods to chose from which included soy candles, handmade jewelry and skincare items. Definitely take a stop by if you are in search of a bite to eat and want to get some shopping done to support local businesses.

Deidre M.

Yelp
Warm, welcoming space. The little kids play area was an unexpected surprise (it's hard eating out with a toddler lol). The gluten free chicken katsu was so good. I would eat a whole plate of nothing but that chicken, but it was delicious with the Mama Mel's gf bread and all the fixings. I can't wait to come back and try more.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Great experience here. The chicken Katsu sando was excellent and served with a mini brown bag of homemade potato chips seasoned with sumac, salt and pepper - the chicken and the chips were perfectly crispy. Pastries also excellent - many gluten free options and amazingly prepared. I'm not always required to be gf, but I test weak to gluten off and on, so am familiar with gf quality. IMO - this is some of the best gf products I've tasted - textures are on point. The gf chocolate, sesame banana bread was impossible to tell it was gf. Also the 'mouthful' (like a caramel chocolate blondie) - the gf shortbread was stellar, and the sesame caramel was really good. Will return for sure. Service very friendly and timely.
google avatar

Morris R.

Yelp
We ate here twice during our stay in the Russian River area. The food meets urban foodie standards, but the vibe is chill. Nice mix of people for people watching. The hot dog was elevated (and good). The egg sandwich was also really satisfying. Dog friendly outdoor seating.

Yelp
I love this place so much and appreciate them beyond words I was thrilled that they opened during a time when we were all doing without and they had the courage to provide a safe place to get some good food and some love The food is fresh and the staff is the best We feel so at home here

Chris M.

Yelp
This is really a cafe/bar/store all in one. We frequently go for their delicious selection of fresh baked goods, and excellent coffees. Breakfast options are very delicious as well. They have a solid WiFi that is complimentary. A relaxing area to sit for awhile and enjoy this cute little town of Occidental, and do some remote work. Haven't been able to attend the happy hour yet, unfortunately. This would have been 5 starts if it weren't for the limited hours of operation.

Kelly R.

Yelp
Wonderful stop on a day trip exploring the Bohemian Highway. Small selection, but great food, service, and vibe.
google avatar

Pedro B.

Yelp
Some places have a wonderful inviting atmosphere right from walking in the door. This place offers many choices for breakfast and a great coffee. I fell in love with this place immediately. Don't tell me why. We have been coming to Occidental in Sonoma county since 1973. This is a great little town with good people. Don't tell anyone it's already crowded. Jajajaja Peter Chicano Bee Master of the North and The Wizard of the Zapata Legions of the North.... good place to park my horse.

MARY M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!! Best service!! Food is healthy and delicious!! Great find will be back!
google avatar

Ellery D.

Yelp
So glad to see this building open up after years closed. It's a big gorgeous place, and the new management is very kind and welcoming. The menu is carefully designed with options for everyone. They even sell gluten free pastries baked in-house. I ordered the beyond beef hotdog. First time trying a beyond product, and damn... I'm hooked. The toppings were amazing and complex--pickled mustard seed and green tomato relish, yuzu aioli, spicy ketchup, and crispy fried shallots--all on a delicious pillowy bun. The textures and flavors all played excellently together, and I devoured the whole thing in under 5 minutes. (Yes, I'll definitely be going back for seconds.) The matcha, too, is very wholesome and tasty, with added collagen, and you can request almond or oat milk if that's your thang. There is currently only outdoor seating but you can always take your stuff to go. They have plenty of tasty pre-made lunch options too, so this is the spot to grab picnic provisions.
google avatar

Patti A.

Yelp
This is the cutest place to eat! I ordered the chicken bowl . It was delicious bravo! You can sit outside or inside . It was a perfect fall day , perfect food and a great ambiance.
google avatar

Cj G.

Yelp
Sorry I can't recommend this place. Foods overpriced, nothing special and the owner's kind of a dick.

Jen G.

Yelp
So cute, loved the ambience, the food was great and the service was fast. Boho bowl was so good!
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Adorable, delicious, comfortable, friendly, innovative, and healthy. What more could you want?
google avatar

Nicolas R.

Yelp
Oh my god. Absolutely divine. First of all the interior is beautiful with tons of cute items for sale, tons of seating and great service. But the food is what really got me. It is a bit on the pricier side but 100% worth it for the quality and portion size. Will recommend their bowls over and over again! The smoked pork bowl was to die for with delicious smoky pork balanced with acidity from the kimchi and pickled onions and topped with a delicious aioli! Try the rotisserie chicken bowl if you're not a pork person and you will be equally pleased! Will definitely be coming back!

Cinde Lou D.

Yelp
Order the root beer float! The best we have ever had in our combined 167 years!! Wonderful town too!
google avatar

linden d.

Yelp
The chicken katsu sando was overly salty, too fatty, and too sweet. The house-made chips that they charge for have too much salt on them. The chocolate chip cookie was over-baked. The bowl that my partner had was honestly flavorless and a bit icky. I would try this place again, but this was my first experience and it wasn't a good one.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
We were heading to Sea Ranch for a long weekend and took the Bohemian Highway route to see some of the "local color". We wandered around this cute little town of a strip mall before the Friday farmers market kicked us all out of the parking lot for a late lunch. Of the few choices this one seemed the most promising for a fancy Sammie in Sonoma. We got the pork melt and the special of the day was lamb meatballs - which in our humble opinion was the winner of the day. About $13-15 for each and although I expect a generous cured pastrami Sammie for that $$$ the lamb meatballs hit the spot. Cute place kinda Spartan inside but hey we are just getting over da plague and this place was only outdoor seating until recently. The port was food but a little dry. Fresh pocketed onions and slaw and arugula all helped justify the fancy prices. All considering a decent Sammie - worth a visit for sure.

Yelp
Now this is the kind of local business you want to support! Delicious, innovative food in a quaint, cute setting in the heart of Occidental. We've come a couple times for lunch and are always surprised with the creative twists they add to food you already enjoy. Today's hot dog came with an unexpected pineapple salsa that complemented the savory hot dog (whereas on a previous occasion, it came with a tangy pickled slaw). We also tried the kimchi rice, which had a nice variety of bright fermented veggies and a perfectly cooked soy egg. We still need to try the mochi donut one of these days - need to remember to save room next time! Besides the tasty eats, the warm service you get here is also inviting. It's the kind of West County business where you can tell the team cares. As the name suggests, it's also a retail store where you can buy home goods. Last time we were there, I wasn't able to find a ceramic bowl in the color I wanted so the kind folks suggested I place a custom order with the pottery studio next door and they would make it to order. And, they did! Big thank you to Andzia for suggesting the custom order and making it happen! I am so happy with my batter bowl and can't wait to use it! They are planning to have all of their restaurant's dine-in dish ware made by the same pottery studio. Their ceramics are really beautiful, so that's exciting to hear. The second photo is the bowl that was made for me in the size and color I wanted. I wish I had remembered to take photos of the various products they sell in the store besides what I brought home. They do a very nice job with the merchandising - I enjoy taking a couple spins around the store each time I'm there as new items get added. They have some fun products, especially if you're into kitchen-y things. Go check it out!
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Definitely one of those spaces that once you walk in , you don't want to leave. The owners did a great job laying out the warm inviting space and embodying the term community. Food is on point, there are local vendors stations througout the space that are fun to walk around and browse their goods, and they also have a great wine and beer selection. The customer service was very friendly and they offered great suggestions. If you are looking for a scenic drive to a good meal or somewhere to grab some to-go food for an adventure to the beach I would highly recommend stopping by here.
google avatar

Sumanyu M.

Yelp
Don't be thrown off by the name. It's not just a General store but a cute little restaurant too! We tried their Boho Bowl (vegetarian bowl with french lentils, rice and a bunch of vegetables) and the Ginger-Carrot muffin. Both tasted great! Their coffee menu looked interesting as well. Definitely worth checking out in the quaint little town of Occidental!

Leah J.

Yelp
The food and service is the best I've experienced in a long time. The tacos are my absolute favorite, the bowls are delicious too. The best vanilla lattes I've EVER had and the owners are so down to earth and lovely. Highly recommend
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
I'm completely obsessed with this place. I want to move to Occidental so I can eat here every day. Creative use of fresh ingredients. Above and beyond provision for gluten-free diets. Fresh baked gluten-free bread and muffins. Fantastic wine and local boutique goods selection.
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
Very friendly environment. Perfect for getting work done. I really enjoy the lattes here and they have good bowls+salads.

Terry J.

Yelp
This restaurant never gets old nor does it disappoint. If you love fresh ingredients, plentiful portions, crisp veggies and rich flavors, come here. Great selection of draft beers and wine as well as great soft serve to top things off. They offer Indoor and outdoor dining with gorgeous dishware/pottery to make it all feel classy.

Affinity J.

Yelp
I would never have thought I'd like a lavender latte. But here we are. Breakfast bowl and jammy eggs are also mixes of different flavors that go together exquisitely. Eat breakfast here. Really. My only suggestion: just make it 2 jammy eggs instead of 1.5.
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
I have been in about four or five times now and it has been equally as delicious each time. The store has a very laid back, welcoming feel. The food is unique, flavorful and delicious. Some favorites of mine are the fried rice and the curry chicken salad in the to go case. Love the sandwiches and bowls as well! Pork melt is one of my favorites.

Laura L.

Yelp
Great vibes and excellent lavender latte. Big open space with tons of light and cute provisions for sale. Definitely worth a detour.

Diana F.

Yelp
Kiawe smoked pork bowl was awesome. Kim chi had great flavor and not too hot and the remaining ingrediants were wonderful by themselves and together.
