Singapore’s Private Kitchens Are the Island’s Hottest Dining Experience | Condé Nast Traveler

"Take a seat at the outdoor dining area of this sprawling house in upscale Bukit Timah as chatty retired accountant Raymond Leong regales you with stories about his passion for food, and son David doles out punchy Penang-style dishes made with recipes handed down from his father."

I feel compelled to warn others about this place, specifically Raymond Leong. I contacted them to book a private lunch for 10 pax. They requested a 50% deposit via PayNow to confirm which is fair BUT when I asked for a simple invoice before making payment (a standard and reasonable request in any proper F&B or event setting, especially in an era of rising scams), I was met with arrogance, condescension, and refusal to cooperate. Instead of issuing a basic invoice, I was told, “When you go to a restaurant, you make payment then get a receipt!!”. A completely inaccurate comparison. Invoices and receipts serve two different purposes. Before getting defensive, I suggest learning basic business terms. He later replied with: “Don’t waste my time. I suggest you drop the booking.” wow. That sums it up: ❌ Zero professionalism ❌ Zero customer service ❌ No accountability ❌ No flexibility ❌ No understanding of standard booking practices ❌ Poor communication etiquette ❌ Disrespectful attitude toward paying customers ❌ Operates without transparency If this is how they treat potential customers before payment, I can’t imagine how they handle actual service. Screenshots of the full WhatsApp conversation are attached. If you value professionalism, transparency, and basic respect then steer clear at all cost. I respect my boundaries and he definitely crossed many. There are far far far better-run private dining options in Singapore.

My experience with Ampang Kitchen quite a while back was below expectations. While the pricing is relatively affordable compared to other private dining options, the food quality was mediocre and lacked authenticity. The hosting was not up to standard for a private dining experience. There are other private dining venues that, while more expensive, offer significantly better value and service. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

Ordered 7 dishes for a birthday party. Food arrived nice and warm and our guests were happy with the taste. Detailed instructions were also given on how to handle the rojak, kiam chye duck soup and chendol desert which was a good plus point for them as well. Would recommend or order from them again next time.

Just last Friday, I had the opportunity of trying Ampang Kitchen. The dishes are exquisite and really delicious. First dish we had was Satay Bohong, a pork satay that is served without a dip, the pork was so nicely charred on the outside and the fats on the side gives a nice chew. Next, Bakwan Kepiting, a soup with meat balls made from pork and prawn, there is also bamboo shoots in the soup that is so rich in prawns, chicken and pork, a soup that packs many more punches than a regular prawn soup. The Char Siew was also very very good, I personally like it more burnt but it is already extremely good. The most memorable dish for me, had to be Pork Cinchaluk, the sauce and the shallots made the fatty pork so enjoyable that I lost count of the number of pieces I ate. Buah Keluak Fried Rice was again something different and the rest of my friends could not stop complimenting the dish. The wonderful dinner ended with Chendol that was made from scratch. If you are looking for a night to meet up with friends over good food to also talk about and a memorable experience, this is one place to visit.

Delicious home restaurant, beautiful home and very friendly chefs. They also offer take away service so if you are hosting a home party, you can order some of their dishes and pick it up and reheat and serve them at home. Never disappoint in taste. Reservations required. Highly recommended, email uncle Raymond and they will send you a catalogue for your reference.
