The Anchor

"Despite its name, this pub is nowhere near the water. At 400 years old, it retains an appealingly rustic feel but it also has a modern edge and a friendly, laid-back vibe. Cooking is full of flavour, with enticing snacks on offer alongside good value modern dishes of local ingredients." - Michelin Inspector

We went to The Anchor for a celebration it was the best! It was our second visit there and the food did not disappoint it was the most incredible food we’ve ever had! The french onion soup was a favourite and the sea bream! The service is excellent, the staff are so knowledgeable. We hope to return again soon and would highly recommend.

Midweek lunch was excellent. One of us had the set menu, the other a la carte. The food allergy was handled very well. The pasta starter was tasty and interesting. My French onion soup was lukewarm but soon remedied. The mains, quail and partridge were well presented and had some good flavours. Mine was a little tough. We shared a cute little dessert. The service was OK but lacked charm. My soup should not have been sent out lukewarm. I do not like a pre-set service charge. It's not nice for customers.

We had phenomenal lunch at the Anchor. The food was stunning and offered amazing value. The smoked salmon tartlets and the braised pork belly were particular highlights. The cooking was superb, everything was seasoned so well and the presentation was beautiful. Can’t wait to return

We had snacks, starters, main and dessert and the food was exceptional! We took advice from the waitress Phoebe who recommended some sides too - how right she was! The menu had plenty for us to choose from and the presentation beautiful. The atmosphere was cosy and made us feel comfortable and relaxed. We would highly recommend and look forward to returning, thank you Chefs Mike and Dave and all the staff we had a most enjoyable experience!

Simply put…lovely tasty food… I cannot fault the food. I would love to go again. I’ve been back for lunch and I had some lovely food again….and I feel too full in a good way for dinner…. I had something from the a la carte and the December lunch menu. Please see my new photos .. but I forgot the photo of the dessert .. it was sponge with ice cream.

We visit in January on a quiet day, just another 2 table apart from us. We had everything from nibbles to dessert and food is very good 👍 Only thing I would change is the crackers for the cheese, would rather go for some water crackers as their less in flavour and you actually can taste the good cheese better. The young lady in the service did a good job a bit more personality would be good to see to make the lovely pub more attractive but that’s my personal opinion. Definitely worth going there when you in town.

Such a lovely experience! The food was unbelievable, just so so tasty! Gorgeous vino, and friendly staff make the whole visit just so worthwhile! Highly recommend the Veal & the sticky toffee pudding is to die for! A fantastic venue for a special occasion as pricey but 100% worth it! Thanks x

A really nice Saturday lunch We did the 3 course set menu for £28. The food was delicious and freshly made. The service was really good with a friendly team. Really nice location and also dog friendly. Definitely worth the visit. I am sure we will be back to try the seasonal rotating dishes.

Yelp
I may not be from England but I know quality food, and this place is a ripoff. Please save your money and go somewhere else, especially if you are a traveler. There are so many other places to see and taste that can produce a product that matches the price. I feel I was scammed.

Yelp
Here is yet another English pub situated in a small town attempting to serve gastronomic food. It's possible that given its location, the pub might be one of the best places in which to eat, but overall, I can't say I loved it. The pub doesn't actually feel like a pub but a restaurant. The bar is located in its own small room so people who want to stand around and drink are confined and roped off from the rest of the restaurant. The entire restaurant feels fresh with white painted walls and clean lines for furnishing. There is a pretty little garden in the back where people can bring their drinks and sit in a gazebo with couches made of straw (a bit cabana like, which is odd, but pretty). They do have heaters but they weren't on because not enough people were occupying the space. In the dining room, I started with a garlic soup, which was lukewarm and tasted more like an onion soup. It was okay. Unfortunately the menu on their website does not reflect what I ate (it does look like they have their summer menu on now and I was there in May so perhaps I still had a winter menu?), so I can only vaguely tell you that I had fish (I believe it was hake) and it was good. Not memorably good, but good. I had dessert, and I remember it being an incredibly tangy cheesecake (lim?) that I was okay eating for the first few bites but couldn't take much more. Again, it's likely a good restaurant for its location.

Yelp
You go to this restaurant for the food, the drinks and the service (multi-national - Portugese, English, Spanish, Hungarian. As a gastro pub, the food is of an overall very high standard. The wine list is very broad and you should be able to find something to your taste to accompany your meal. If you are just going for a drink you have the choice of the bar, a snug or the outside courtyard. If you've not tried "manzanilla" ( a mild dry aperitif similar to sherry, but lighter), they stock this . Reverting to the food, the menu changes quite frequently and there are "specials" before they are added to the menu. Look out for the fish dishes, the game (the partridge and guinea fowl) that I have eaten there were both quite exceptional. Desserts are quite varied and if you like your cheese their cheese plate is better than average with a priority given to local producers.
