Remember the comic The Far Side by Gary Larson? When it first came out, you and your friends would read it and laugh for hours. ("Bummer of a birthmark, Hal"). It was an amazing comic strip and delivered most every time. Creative, timely, interesting, inventive and most importantly: funny.
Then Gary Larson went on sabbatical and when he came back, The Far Side was no longer funny. It was an imitation that no longer had the magic, wasn't creative or funny and you simply stopped reading.
Well that's the Angry Donuts story.
When Angry Donuts first came to town, we really looked forward to trying to get a spot to get donuts. They were creative, inspired, delicious, decadent; almost narcotic in nature. We were angry when they ran out before we got there.
Yesterday, we went to the Inn St. location for the first time since they moved and found out the expensive way that Angry Donuts is now the Far Side after it started to suck.
We bought 4 different donuts that totaled $16. $16 for 4 donuts.
What we got was a doughy, flavorless items that made us Angry Customer. They didn't taste BAD. They simply had no flavor, or more accurately, it was the Ghost of Flavor Past haunting us. Sure the appearance looking enticing, but it was downhill from there.
The cinnamon donut was 'cinnamon' in name only. The chocolate sea-salt donut had an echo of chocolate and I think they replaced the sea-salt with something that looks like sea-salt. The one with the big glob of jelly substance was cute but failed to provide any flavor - ANY flavor. I don't even remember the last one.
We cut them into sections to share and sample, and ended up throwing out what we didn't eat after the first round. I'd estimate that we threw away at least $8 worth of Angry Donuts.
Sure, there are people that go there and tell you that donuts at Angry Donuts are wonderful, but to me, they are the same people that desperately want to find the post-sabbatical Far Side comics as funny as the originals. They are living on past glories unable to move on.
I won't be back.
