Last summer (2011), the Alamo Drafthouse had a screening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the grounds of The Antlers. (Their restaurant, Junction House, is housed in the building where the movie was filmed.) I had no previous knowledge of the hotel (I guess it's more of a resort, but not what you'd typically think of when you hear the term "resort"), and was surprised that it was such a lovely place. I was especially intrigued by the train cars on the property, especially when I learned that you can stay in them. Back in ye olden times this was the intersection of two rail lines and had a bustling depot, hence the train theme. I also learned that there use to be a huge train station at 3rd and Congress in downtown Austin (!). Oh, if only we could get back to our railroad roots.
Fast forward to Valentine's Day and my wonderful husband surprised me with a trip to The Antlers. He booked the nicest train car, the McKinley, which is a restored car from the 1800s. It was surprisingly spacious, with three (!) beds, two bathrooms, two couches, and a kitchen area, complete with stove, fridge, and microwave. It was a one-of-a-kind experience at a very reasonable rate. They have a nice Triple AAA discount.
This seems like a great place for summertime activities. It's right on a lake, and they have adorable-looking cabins of various sizes that you can rent. Things were a little dead, as we were there in the middle of winter, but it was still nice to stroll by the lake and take in the scenery. The main house, where you check in, also serves as a hotel. The aforementioned Junction House is also excellent for lunch and dinner (they only serve breakfast on Sunday). I don't know if they do weddings, but I think it would be a great place to have one.
Four stars because I can't vouch for the cabins or hotel rooms. But I look forward to returning in nicer weather. Highly recommended if you're looking for a weekend getaway not too far from Austin.
