The Great Smoky Mountains Holiday Food Tour - Eater Atlanta

"The Apple Barn in Sevierville offers apple stack cake made with layers of molasses-sweetened pancakes and apple butter. The cake, with its rich molasses and gingerbread-like flavor, is a holiday favorite in Appalachia." - Sarah Bisacca

I love this place! The food is always great regardless of which side you eat at. The julep is fantastic and the fritters are indescribably delicious! The shops are all fairly price and have something for just about everyone. The walkways are beautiful as well is the scenery. They also have a year-round Christmas store.

The Apple Barn & Cider Mill is a charming stop that truly captures the spirit of Tennessee. It’s not a restaurant (though there is one nearby that we’re definitely trying next time!), but it offers an unforgettable experience all the same. We stopped by after a great meal at Azul Cantina, so we didn’t get to eat at the restaurant, but we did try their amazing cider tasting—and what a treat! For just $10, you get to sample a variety of house-made ciders with different flavors. Each one had its own personality, from crisp and refreshing to sweet and spiced. Highly recommended if you’re a cider fan or just curious to try something local and delicious. The barn itself is authentic—it dates back to 1910 and still has that old-time charm. It’s part of a working farm with over 4,000 apple trees, and you can feel the history and care that goes into everything they do. There are also several shops on site, all revolving around apples in some way—candies, jams, gifts, baked goods. It’s a little apple wonderland! It’s a great spot to explore, especially if you’re with family or just want to walk around and enjoy something different. One tip: weekends can get busy, and traffic on the main roads can be a bit heavy. If you want to avoid the rush, this is a great place to escape to while things calm down. Peaceful, delicious, and full of local flavor—we’re so glad we stopped by!

Google
This is just part of the apple farmland. This whole place is about apples. We visited here after having breakfast in their restaurant. The Christmas store is open year round. You can buy ornaments and have names put on them. Most of us bought them and put children names on them. It is so beautiful in there.

Google
Such a cute place to visit and get locally made gifts. After you eat at the restaurant, you have lots of shopping options all within walking distance. There is a very cute Christmas store that offers a wide variety of Christmas decor perfect for anyone's home. I specifically loved the candle and wax shop where I did purchase a new wax warmer and wax for my home. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful place when in the area.

Google
we had a lovely stop at the apple barn on our vacation. we wished we stopped sooner in our trip. we will definitely be back. lovely workers. will definitely be recommending. and we heard amazing things about the restaurant.

Google
This has to be my new favorite place in TN! Love all the home baked goodies and canned goods. We came twice because we didn't get apple butter on the first trip and after tasting it at the restaurant, we had to go back to get a jar. We enjoyed the apple orchard and checking out all of the trees! They have a nice riverside picnic area across the road, a creamery, some delicious apple pies, wines and homemade baked fruit bread that looks amazing. We will definitely be visiting it again. There is a great selection of things to buy here and 2 really great restaurants that are not horribly overpacked. The restaurant is some of the best dining out in TN. Absolutely one of my new favorite places to visit

Google
The apple barn was beautiful landscaping. The area was so very well kept up. Everyone was very sweet and helpful. Both cider and wine tasting was excellent. We did visit the christmas store attached to the bakery. What a wonderful place

Google
We had a great time sampling apple cider. We’ve been coming here for years, ever since I was a kid, and just celebrated my youngest brother’s 21st birthday here yesterday! Our host was attentive, offered excellent recommendations, and shared great insight on all the wines we tried. We’ll definitely be keeping this special family tradition going.

Yelp
Such a fun spot to visit! We went for the winery, but were surprised by the store, restaurant and hard cidery. We picked up some wine to take home and some Christmas gifts.

Yelp
The inside of the restaurant was old, dusty, and everything felt sticky. We were sat next to a bird cage where we could see multiple birds balancing on a small tree. Cage had a lot of bird poop in it and was kind of gross to look at while eating. The food tasted like nursing home cafeteria food. You could tell everything had been pre frozen/ pre cooked and warmed up. Most stuff came out with a film on top like it had been sitting under a warmer. For the price, I would consider this a major fail. I was very disappointed. It is worth it to go to check out the Cider Mill & Winery and explore the shops, but I would highly recommend not eating here. Twice the price of Cracker Barrel and not remotely as good. Even KFC is better. I was able to try a bite of all of my family's food because I really wanted to like this place. - Chicken was dry and bland - tomato soup tasted like tomato juice from a can - Mac and cheese was made with fake cheese and had a gross film - mashed potatoes were runny and bland - chicken pot pie tasted like a frozen microwave meal - chicken and dumplings were awful. Stuck together and so mushy. The only thing good at all were the free apple fritters at the start of the meal. Seriously, do not go here.

Yelp
We look forward to coming here every time we're in town. You really can't beat it! The apple Julep and fritters are amazing. I loved the breakfast skillet also. It's a tradition to stop here and it never disappoints!!
google avatar

Hayli Z.

Yelp
Such a cute area with stores, restaurants, a creamery, a winery and cider spot. If you like wine, get the FREE wine passport. It has 5 stops on it and at the third and fifth stop you get a prize and every stop does a free tasting.
google avatar

Brandy D.

Yelp
So many great choices! Our sever was friendly and knowledgeable. The food came out fast and hot! They have little shops and a cider mill too. It's a must see!
google avatar

Robbie G.

Yelp
Everyone post the apple cider bread and I can see why it's freakin addictive. The meal itself was good. I go an omelette and it was good size and loaded. Everyone else had good meals too so I think this is repeat place for us every year. The wait is crazy so be prepared but it's well worth it
google avatar

Yelp
The table "bread" is amazing. This place takes southern home comfort cooking to the max. This is not the place to avoid carbs and calories but it will be a place that makes your taste buds happy campers.

Yelp
Second visit. 2.5 actually, long wait, for cafeteria type food, on old red plastic dinnerware! Had the country chicken salad it was okay, but not anything special. The others in my party, were disappointed in the crowded, loud dining, all said food was bland, and they were very disappointed. Said Cracker Barrel is better. They wanted to try, they saw the reviews! Truly do not understand the hype. Our first visit, early Thanksgiving dinner, 3ish, hubby and I waited outside for about 20 min. Again bland food, served on that horrible red plastic dinnerware! Just put on the plate sloppyly no garnish terrible presentation! Veggie soup tasted like they just opened cans! Mashed potatoes tasted terrible, over all, our worst Thanksgiving dinner ever. Never again!

Yelp
This is a favorite stop for both me and my husband every time we are in the area. There is a shop for all kinds of local goodies (best apple cider ever - especially the cherry, trust me!). There is an on-site bakery and creamery (get the apple dumpling with ice cream!). There is hard cider and wine tasting. There is a Christmas store. There is also a restaurant (though I never personally ate there). This is a must stop!

Yelp
Yesterday wasn't our first visit to Apple Barn, but it had been several years since. It was still just as good as we remembered. We were seated immediately and they brought out the usual Apple fritters, Apple butter, and julep (Apple juice, orange juice, & pineapple juice). I ordered the Cajun Grilled Catfish with fried okra & cornbread sausage dressing. It also came with a cup of soup, & I went with the broccoli cheddar. My husband got the country fried chicken, Mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes & because he didn't want soup, they gave him a choice of a 3rd side, so he chose pinto beans. Service was fast and the food was great, as usual. I was a bit disappointed in the dressing because it barely had any sausage in it & that was why I wanted to try it. Oh well, not a big deal. No room for dessert, but after eating & going through the gift shop, we eventually made our way over to the creamery, one of the buildings on the property with the restaurant. I got a small cup of the Bear Claw (peanut butter & chocolate ice cream with chunks of brownie) & my husband got the Georgia Peach ice cream in a waffle cone. Both were very good .. maybe not as good as Cold Stone Creamery, but we ate every bite. If you've never tried The Apple Barn, you need to stop by - the food, plus the experience .. totally worth it.

Yelp
It's a little hidden but if you're in Pigeon Forge it's a must see. What started as an apple orchard has become a place you can spend a couple hours browsing ! Plenty of parking and when you get out of your car you have a decision of which way to go. There are a number of buildings all interconnected, or better said, shops, with so much to see, sample and or purchase. There a small ice cream shop, candy store, Christmas store, winery, two different places to sit down and enjoy of delicious freshly prepared food.

Yelp
Good food. Not the greatest but it's good. Unique place. They have good apple fritters. Definitely worth a visit. Service was great. Food comes quick & very hot. We had the fried catfish & fried chicken & gravy. After you eat, you can walk to the other stores and wine taste, cider test & have apple ice cream if that's your thing.

Yelp
While the food is still good, the quality of food and service has gone downhill fast. We went to lunch after a wedding with a group of 13 people and they had us separated and couldn't combine the check either. The staff seemed overwhelmed that day and their faces showed it. The quality of the food has just gone downhill though. The fritters and juice are still good, but the meals are just ok now. Nothing fancy and not worth going back for again.

Yelp
One of our favorite breakfast locations!! Love the apple fritters, apple juilep, and apple butter. The food is always amazing and service is always nice
google avatar

Jana K.

Yelp
The apple fritters, the service and the ambiance were the best part. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. However, we really enjoyed the fritters and the dessert we took home with us. I was looking forward to the broccoli cheese soup but it ended up being sold out. Our waitress was so great!

Yelp
Been enjoying since the 1980's. My wife knows how to get here, and how to direct her husband to take her. Our Smoky Mountain visits tend to be for a week at our condo, and Apple Barn always rates a visit, whether or not we visit one of the restaurants. Wife enjoys the shopping and the snack selection; she might also elect the nearby ice cream stand. Caveat: arrive when the busses are Not here....

Yelp
Stopped in for 5 minutes and left 5 hours later.... This is a great place to experience with the entire family. Amazing treats, ice cream store and tons of shopping. We had a great time and the staff was super friendly.

Yelp
The food is amazing! You receive a cider and order of apple fritters that are awesome! Country home cooking! Service is always great! Nice atmosphere!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a MUST when you're in the area. The Apple fritters are the star of the show along with the winery tasting and shops adjacent to the restaurant!! I got the strawberry pancakes and I would have them every day if I could. If you want authentic southern breakfast, this is your sign to go!
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
Delicious every time. The pasties are always fresh and warm, and pair so well with the ice cream.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Food was ok. Staff nice. Felt like I was at grandma's. I would go for the complimentary apple fritters but that's about it.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
The apple fritters are delicious and the staff mostly kind, but overall the food/experience was not worth the incredibly long wait.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
We had such a great time tasting the different ciders that are offered at the Cider Mill. My favorite was the honey basil. The staff were very nice and patient considering we were then at the start of fall and they were super busy.

Yelp
I went to a Sunday dinner with a group of co-workers. Their Sunday dinner menu is a bit different from the regular menu. You get your choice of a meal and it comes with a basket of apple fritters and apple butter (which were very good) and a small serving of their apple julep which was just ok to me. All Sundays meals also come with a choice of soup, mashed potatoes as a side and dessert. I regretted getting the vegetable soup but it came out piping hot which I appreciated. It was nothing more than your typical can of vegetables soup. I got the apple spiced cake and fell in love with it! The others at my table all agreed that their desserts were just as tasty (chocolate cake, blueberry cobbler and apple cobbler). There is no way you could possibly leave this place hungry, even if you tried. The stores were all closed by the time we got there so I can't say much about them. But the lay out of the entire place, stores and restaurant, looked really nice. All in all, this place is what you'd get if Cracker Barrel and Loveless Cafe had a baby.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Off the path nut worth a stop. You can entertain yourself by stopping at the: Christmas store The creamery The pie shop The candy shop 2 restaurants The cider mill (our initial reason for going) A winery Gift shop And the bakery (which you can smell all over the grounds) And walking through the orchards. The smell here is outstanding! The food is great, the apple cider donuts are top notch
google avatar

Kayden D.

Yelp
A value and experience very similar to that of the famous "Old Mill", however, I would argue that this restaurant is better. I liked the special items which were included because of the "Apple and cider" emphasis. You will certainly leave the restaurant full, and will have leftovers to eat which are just as good as when they were served. Though I rate it 5 stars, there are a couple things I'd like to mention. The two different locations for restaurants on the site is confusing and dumb. Several people make the same mistake by going to the different version of the restaurant. The menu is also pretty lame, there's not as many options for a main course as I feel like there could be. Overall it's pretty dagum good and I'll be back.

Yelp
Visiting TN for the first time. Came across this awesome little village thru the TN Visitors Center This adorable little Apple Valley & Cedar Mill village with shops and a restaurant is a must see. We had lunch in the restaurant and they bring you complimentary apple fritter bites with homemade apple butter and a courtesy apple julep. Very tasty. I opted for the double decker BLT with a side salad and homemade creamy potato soup. A-Mazing. Bring your appetite, portions are big and everything is prepared perfectly. Our Server was attentive and gave good recommendations. The restaurant is clean and all the staff we encountered were friendly. Highly recommend this awesome little village.

Yelp
What a fun place to visit when in Tennessee. The location is great, lots of trees and right by the river. Everything I have had from this lovely, all things apple place has been absolutely delicious. The apple fritters and apple cider from the restaurant were very tasty, the apple hard cider very good. Of course with the candy and ice cream place you can not go wrong. The wine tasting and all the wines were really nice. Just looking around in the gift store and the Christmas store was a fun experience. I've been twice so far, came back on two separate trips to Tennessee and will be back again for sure. This place is awesome!

Yelp
My family and I were craving some traditional southern food and decided to stop in to the restaurant at The Apple Barn & Cider Mill in Sevierville, TN. The restaurant has a charming southern aesthetic to it with the staff in special southern attire, as well. The wait wasn't bad at all, even though we came during a busy time; however, the food was not very appetizing. The turkey dinner tasted as if it was from a boxed frozen meal and the sides weren't any better. The only good food I enjoyed were the apple fritters that come complimentary with every meal. Those were cooked to absolute perfection and paired perfectly with the apple butter on the side. There were some cute shops adjoining the restaurant on property that are worth checking out if you stop in as well, but I may skip the restaurant next time.

Madison E.

Yelp
They give you SOOO much food! Loved the apple fritters and apple butter. The broccoli cheddar soup was to die for! Our main courses were great, plus we got dessert to go!

Yelp
This is a must visit!! Especially if you love apples, cider and wine! They have something for the adults and ice cream and candy for the kids. Let's start with the winery. This is located in a separate building on the same property. All within walking distance. They have free samples -- you can choose 4 flavors of wine to try at no charge. No obligation to buy. Just find an available place at the bar and get started. If you find one you love then you can purchase right there. They also have full glasses and wine slushes you can purchase also. The ice cream shop and bakery. Located in a separate suite to the main strip of shops. They have samples of the apple bread available to taste. They have milkshakes, ice cream, and other sweet treats. Seating is available to enjoy your treat both inside and outside. The candy and chocolate factory. Located in a separate suite to the main strip of shops. We didn't go inside this one but they had quite the variety of candy from looking inside as we passed by. The cider bar. Here you can sample 3 ciders ciders for free or pay $8 and sample all ciders they had which was about 10. Plus you get to keep your shot glass! We tried all the ones on the pictured menu. Our favorite was the Red lemonhead which is strawberry lemonade. It's so good!!! It is part of the wine club if you are interested in signing up. Also got to sample the slushes of watermelon and pina colada. Yum yum yum. I loved this the best of my time here. Be sure to end your adventure at the bake house and general store! Bake house is located right next door to the general store and you can find apple pies, ciders and other goodies. The general store has all sort of options from apple butter, peach butter, preserves, kitchen decor and other general merchandise and souvenirs for sale. You won't regret visiting.

Yelp
One of the pillars of Pigeon Forge restruants with a campus of baked goods, candy, cider gift store, winery and a sister restaurant all in the same location. The server was pleasant and helpful sharing knowledge of the lunch menu. I enjoyed the chicken sampler with dumplings, pot pie and fried chicken. My wife enjoyed the pot roast dinner. Sometimes there can be a wait, just wait and enjoy. Especially with all of the things to see in do. Put your name in and enjoy the campus and the food.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
The staff here in every area is always so kind and friendly! They have the absolute best ciders you will ever try too, so I definitely recommend spending $8 to try them all! I highly encourage you to purchase a large growler of the Red Lemon Head Cider! They also allow you to bring a growler from ANYWHERE and get a 50% of a growler fill. I am clarifying due to how cool it is that you can bring any growler from any place to fill up for half off! The grounds are super pretty to walk around as well, but this place will be packed with families & especially children, so be prepared for lots of people. I also heavily recommend a wine tasting here and to of course, bring at least 6 bottles home with you for a 20% discount or 12 for 25% discount (discount price point seen was 3/29/23). Check this place out!!
google avatar

Yelp
The wait time was about 20 minutes which isn't too Minh at all. When we got to the take they gave us some delicious bite size treats with some amazing apple dipping sauce. I got the Benedict breakfast plate it was really good biscuits were nice and fluffy. Only big problem potatoes were a little dry, and the eggs for sunny side up got cooked a little more than I wanted prefer more runny. My wife got the country boy skillet I ate some of her leftover only big thing here a lot of cheese. Also, might have been a good idea to put the gravy in the baked food. The food and the service was definitely delicious and will be coming back here again to eat.
google avatar

Jimmy T.

Yelp
We were visiting the Gatlinburg area with a large group. Most of them hadn't been to the Apple Barn yet. The meal comes with Apple fritters with Apple Butter. Those were very good. I got the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, grilled corn (new on the menu & very good) and broccoli soup. Mine was very good and the broccoli soup was delicious; wish I had a bigger bowl. My wife got the chicken salad with fruit. She said she didn't like the big celery and really needed to be cut into smaller pieces. She also felt it was sort of bland and had to put pepper on it for more taste. The fruit with the chicken salad was very good and was presented on the plate with the chicken salad was very nicely. She also loved the broccoli soup! Shane our server was very good and very friendly! Job well done! Restaurant was very clean as well as the restaurant rooms. When we left we went to the Apple Barn store and purchased Peach Cider, Apple Jelly and the Apple Butter to take home with us. We definitely recommend the Apple Barn when you are in the area! Thanks for great food and service!
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
Positive: - the access to jams, jelly's, and sauces is great - the local candles are wonderful - the cider bar has tastings and they were really good - cider is bit more than other locations but worthwhile - can get cider growler refills for $15 Negatives: - there were none off season hours are expected. Not so much a negative but it is well posted.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
I'd give this 5 stars but the bathrooms are disgusting. My husband said the same of the men's.
google avatar

Adriana F.

Yelp
I was in dire need of some fresh apple cider for a recipe during Christmas week. While, all of the local stores were no longer selling apple cider as it was not in season, I asked my friends where else I could find it. Lo and behold, they told me the Apple Barn would have some and it's the most delicious cider that they have had. So, I drove over there and picked up a half a gallon. The half gallons will run you $7.98. I also got a 16 ounce peach cider to try. I have to say the cider was delicious, but the peach cider was so exquisite. They also have a cherry flavored 16 ounce cider and these flavored small ciders will run you $2.98 but they are worth every penny. I will definitely be back to the Apple Barn for both their cider and the flavored ciders. And if you have time, be sure to look around their gift shop which has everything from dish towels to special mulling spices that I find so very hard to find in regular stores.
google avatar

Veronica P.

Yelp
Initially we were looking for fresh hot apple cider and we didn't find it here instead we found a more commercialized store as expected a tourist trap. They sold iced or blended apple cider which tasted more like apple juice. The store was more than a store it was more like a mini City with a general store, a wine store, ice cream parlor a candy, restaurant and a Christmas store. I gave it a four star because of the sampling of the wine in the winery. The people behind the bar were not friendly, especially the one that we had. For some reason the bartender was only able to sample two people at a time, not knowing how to proceed he totally ignored us, did not make eye contact and robotically served the two ladies even though it was at the beginning of their sampling. After seeing this mistreatment, we went to another person and it wasn't any better. Boy was he grumpy. Clearly he was annoyed at life and was not friendly At all You would think that as a tourist attraction you would be friendly to out of state folks... I did not find the southern hospitality in this place...the winery

Mary W.

Yelp
the service was excellent. seating was fairly quick considering it was packed. We have eaten here a lot of the years and I'm not sure we return for the food as much as the nostalgia. the fried chicken and chicken n dumplings are always great! The meatloaf was more like baked ground chuck, it had no taste. fried Okra was the best! we will return! it's an institution.
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
The apple barn, and Cidermill was excellent and it had a great warming homestyle feel as soon as you came onto the property. It made me feel like I was in the country going to grandma's house. They had the best cider I have ever tasted in my life. It really did. And I don't like cider typically.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Breakfast served only til 11 and we just missed it so we ordered lunch. Wish they served breakfast all day. Was impressed that they offer free fritters with apple butter, a cup of soup and their own pineapple/orange julep when you sit down! What a nice touch! Grilled chicken with apple relish was good - I liked the concept of putting the sweetness of apples with vinegar and onion and making a relish out of it - well done. Collard greens & mashed potatoes were good. Kids menu had good variety for pickier eaters - daughter had kid-size corn dogs & had a choice of ice cream or cookie for a treat with the meal. Blackened chicken alfredo was good, but served with cold toast that should've been warm. Fried chicken was moist, chicken & dumplings had lots of chicken in it - and the chicken pot pie had a good crust. Nothing super notable about the Mac and cheese. Fun part about going here for breakfast or lunch is the rest of the complex- there is a Christmas shop, a Winery with homemade apple-based wines, a cider bar and shop with all kinds of foods, jams, candles and seasonings. Took home a few bottles of wine to try - apple strawberry and apple raspberry- along with a bottle of bourbon apple air freshner and peach and apple butters!

Yelp
They do a great job selling wonderful apple products and gifts! We always buy a bunch of apple butter and jellies. We got some baked goods this time, too!

Yelp
Great stop for an apple snack. Fried pies, apple cider donuts, apple pies, apple cider, anything apple and a full restaurant. Ice cream and gift shop.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped by the Apple Barn in Tennessee over spring break, and the entire location was just absolutely phenomenal. There is a mini-mall behind the restaurant that we visited one day, offering a variety of products from their locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as dozens of Apple Barn themed trinkets and daily use items. There is a lovely ice-cream shop, cider taste testings, and a couple other little shops! The next day as we headed home from our vacation, we stopped by the restaurant for a great southern cooked meal. We got there at just the right time, having only a 10 minute wait as a dozen people filed in after us. Once seated, you are served an apple julep and fritters with apple butter as you want on your food. Both were absolutely amazing, but the fritters were quite sweet in combination with the apple butter. I split a pancake breakfast with my friend and it fed us both nicely! The only part I was a little disappointed in was the scrambled eggs as they were quite wet if that makes sense. However, my friend nor I had the capacity to eat the eggs we were so full, so neither of us mentioned it to the waitress who was by all means very lovely and welcoming.

Dianna F.

Yelp
Food and portions were greatly. Had lunch, pot roast for me and husband had the trio sampler. We will definitely return next time in the area!

J B.

Yelp
Meh. Fritters were probably the highlight. The service was average. The food was average. Portions were small. Like very small. Bacon was overdone and dry. Was expecting more. Won't be back.

Yelp
Great food and service. You can find some unique tastes there. Wonderful atmosphere and then visit their bakery, candy store, cider tasting, etc.

Yelp
Good place to stop and shop Wish there was sample tasting of the apples BEFORE you purchase. I went specifically for Arkansas Blacks and when I finally got to taste after purchasing a peck, they were green and not tasty. The visit was good and the grandkids loved the gazebo. This is a wonderful place to stop at and visit and shop
