Where To Eat Down The Shore: Long Beach Island - New York - The Infatuation

"The Arlington is pretty upscale by LBI standards. But it’s also on LBI, which is why we never feel out of place walking straight here for lunch after spending too many hours riding two-foot chop in 60-degree water. Fortunately, it’s a short walk, as this big American spot, which actually looks more like a ski lodge than an island restaurant, is less than a block from the beach in Ship Bottom. Whether you sit in the first-come, first-served bar area or get a table in one of the dining rooms, you should start with a plate of chicken wings with housemade ranch and any of the 20 unusual, rotating beers they have on tap. If you want to keep things casual, get the very good double cheeseburger, or if you want to class up your board shorts and flip flops, go with the slightly sweet pork chop over andouille and cornbread stuffing." - Matt Tervooren, Tonya Russell

We stopped last night at The Arlington while on our mission to visit every restaurant on the island. We just missed Happy Hour but were pleasantly greeted and seated for dinner in their main and modern decorated dining room. They have a fine selection of beers and cocktails, we settled for the cold golden stuff, we wound up having the New York Sirloins and the fish po-boys. The po-boy was nicely served with crispy fries and fresh cod, the sirloins were juicy and cooked appropriately, the only negative here was that it was topped with a chimmy churrie sauce which wasn’t necessarily bad but had a very strong hint of dill, chimmi churri should never have dill !! We are looking forward to to returning to The Arliington especially for their Happy Hour.

We like to visit this place yearly when we visit. Point lost because all the drinks are very old-fashioned. Also, the price point is on the higher end (albeit so is all of LBI). Nevertheless, order your favorite generic mixed drink unless you like gin, bourbon, and bitters. If you like the good old-fashioned drinks, then, run, don't walk here and give them 5 stars!

The service was pretty rough. Our server never introduced herself and came off more like a frazzled, annoyed lunch lady—rushing around, clearly disorganized. She had us pay on a tablet at the table, which felt impersonal. We ended up tipping well out of sympathy, but honestly, it wasn’t earned. That said, the food was surprisingly good for the most part. The crab cakes were excellent, and the salad was tasty, even though the feta cheese was clearly low quality. Shrimp and grits were solid, while the short rib was disappointing—not tender at all. They were out of one of the main drinks we wanted, and the fries tasted like Popeyes (not necessarily a bad thing). Despite everything, we actually had a blast.

The Arlington was our first dining experience on Long Beach Island and it didn't disappoint. The menu is very thoughtfully created and the dishes were delicious. I highly recommend.

Google
So glad we were able to make it back to this great restaurant!! The food was even better than it was the last visit and the place had been updated since our last trip there. A little on the pricey side, but it's well worth the money.

Google
Beautiful restaurant with very nice bar. Unfortunately the food was just mediocre. I ordered a steak and felt that there was absolutely nothing special about it. Don't get me wrong the steak was good but it did not have enough flavor for me to come back. I did however love how many taps they have available. Many different unique flavors and craft beers available year-round. I don't believe you can have a bad meal here it just won't be amazing.

Google
Great restaurant with a lot of potential, but we had a few thoughts on the interior ambiance. The space feels a bit empty and echoey, probably because it’s missing some furniture or tables. We were even imagining a cozy lounge area in front of the fireplace where guests could wait to be seated. That space is too big to be left unused. The furniture is all too light and sterile, try incorporating some leathers or warmer tones in this potential lounge area to make it a bit more inviting. I dont know how this potential small lounge in front of the fireplace would work with logistics of waiters serving food. The lighting is also very bright. It would feel more intimate if the lights were dimmed, especially since you already go to the effort of lighting candles. Maybe even consider adding fabric panels or canvases to the ceiling to help absorb sound. The food was good 6.5/10, and you’re so close to creating a place people will absolutely love. Just a few small tweaks could make a huge difference.

Google
Great food! Nice place! Fun bar and pretty restaurant. Great service and the cocktails and wine were wonderful. We had the Mexican Street corn, bacon Mac n cheese, pork chop and Korean beef. All were delicious! Highly recommend

Yelp
The Arlington was such a fantastic choice for a nice date night on the island. Firstly, they have a parking lot - how fabulous. The interior is gorgeous. Beautiful fireplace and lovely decor. The staff was great and attentive. We tried a little of everything. My boyfriend is still dreaming of the blackened chicken wings. I tried the mussels as an appetizer and the sauce was to die for. I'm shocked I did didn't ask for more bread to dunk in that delectable jus. We also got the cheesesteak and the fish and chips. Both delicious fresh and the hand cut fries were a great touch. I believe the owners of this restaurant also own Daymark, which I can't wait to try as well. Loves this restaurant and can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
I have to say, this was our second time dining here and I was not impressed like I was the first time. The restaurant has been remodeled and looks great. They have plenty of seating, outdoor dining and a private parking lot which is a huge plus. The staff is friendly and do their job very well from the minute you walk in. However, the food was ok. I expected more for the price. They serve alcoholic drinks, portions were a good size, but some of the dishes were bland or had too much sauce and covered up the flavors of the meat. The winners were the chicken tortilla soup and the fried calamari.

Yelp
We made a Resy reservation for 7:15pm and were told to wait to be seated for 8 of us which was what we booked! We waited until 7:30pm to be seated. Our appetizers were fine but sparse portions. The blackened chicken wings were only 6 pieces and the calamari was small over fried as well. The pretzel came with very small container of cheese for dipping. The mac n cheese was not creamy or cheesy -- it was dry.. when told to the server she replied: it's homemade! I am a great cook so I know how to make creamy cheesy Mac n cheese but this was our going out to dinner night and expected a great deal More for the prices paid ($30/entree!) organic chicken was in a pool of "lemon" sauce as per the menu but the chicken was overly bland not seasoned and had no lemon taste at all. The fish and chips looked like they were frozen before fried and came out cold. we sent it back and ordered the cheesesteak and the cheese on top was unappealing but at least hot. The panini was pressed so firmly and thinly accompanied by tepid limp fries! it was a very uneven evening that we are all left to feel that we will not be coming back again. Just saw some recent reviews along similar lines and we unfortunately have to agree. Giving 2 stars for the drinks and the appetizer taste.

Yelp
I used to eat here once a year when I come down. I would get the duck. Yesterday I got the duck and was NOT impressed with the changes to the recipe. It also came MW when I asked for it to be MR. The accompaniments of the fennel is gross and the kumquats on top were barley cooked. All in all the recipe is not good this year. And then someone had the bacon mac and cheese and the pieces were huge SOFT bacon chunks - gross. The kale Brussels salad was very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was eh. Waitress brought the wrong wine. The correct red wine eventually came but was ice cold. Desserts were not good at all. The ramen was flavorless, the halibut was extremely overcooked. Won't be back.

Yelp
We are locals looking for a new hideout so we figured let's give it another try this place has always been a "no go to" and it still is. The vibe is just not there... staff is not very welcoming, food is just ok nothing more and you need to question the cost of what you order before hand. Sorry folks while this place was empty we went up the street to where you could barely get a seat at the bar which tells you something.
google avatar

Mo B.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years. Lately, the cost to quality ratio seems to be slipping. It is easily $200 for 2 adults and 2 children. We love: the apps, ambiance, fries, beer list, service. We don't love: the strip steak swimming in pesto, the crab cake so much smaller than the bun it is on, $13 cocktails with barely any alcohol, lack of vegetarian options, and the desserts are not good.

Yelp
The short and quick review is The Arlington is a good spot for a drink, but their dinner menu is quite expensive for what you get. ---- They have solid cocktails, a good beer menu with lots of different items on tap, and a nice variety of bourbon and whiskey/whisky. The ambience is rustic, but they have large tables and open seating areas inside and outside to accommodate large groups. The service is solid and the food came out quickly. However, we went on a Wednesday and it wasn't too busy. I'm not sure what their wait times would look like on a weekend when they're slammed. The one area that I wasn't overly impressed with was the food. I had the bucatini with seafood in a cioppino sauce and my wife had the scallops special. The food tasted good, but the portions were small for the price. For example, the scallop special was essentially a few seared scallops on a celery purée with a balsamic sauce. That's it. It should really be an appetizer, not an entree.

Yelp
Cozy and dark fisherman atmosphere. Very nice waitress. Live acoustic act in the bar. Food was very good. Abundant cocktail and beer selection of high quality. Must get the wings as appetizer, crisped to perfection (dry rub of sorts) with very good blue cheese dressing. Crab cakes very lump, some of the best. Bucatini with seafood also very satisfactory. Would return!!!

Yelp
On the fence about this one....got there at 745 and was told we'd be seated in 45 min...first table was in the far side of the parking lot in complete pitch black...there were burst of lightening in the sky so we asked to be moved to a table under the tent where they had light bulbs but we were told those tables were for other reservations so we were more than a little annoyed that the tables under the tent "were spoken for" despite the tables remaining empty until they finally moved us there after I took the picture at 915. despite two tables front and center and a couple other empties were in the back. The food was decent but the service and seating experience just set the wrong tone and not sure we'll be back.

Michelle S.

Yelp
Always fantastic , the short rib with homemade kimchi is one of my favorite dishes. I prefer to go in the off season however even during the busy times, their weight, staff is always friendly, the bar always makes a great drink, and the food is always on point

Kiks M.

Yelp
Went downhill from previous visit 2 years ago in every way. Food was greasy and subpar. Had to ask for utensils when entrees arrived. Extremely loud. Couldn't hear to converse at our own table. Could not get server's attention. Not sure if due to noise level or simply not caring. Not worth the $$$$. Best part of the meal was driving down to Skipper Dipper for ice cream instead of ordering dessert at the restaurant.

Zak S.

Yelp
Our party of 10 who came to LBI from different parts of the country had a wonderful meal last week at The Arlington. Everyone enjoyed their dishes, everything was cooked as expected, and the service was fantastic. I have been here 4-5 times in past years and never had a bad experience, but never left feeling like "I just had a 4 star meal", but this was easily the best food I feel like I have experienced to date.

Carol B.

Yelp
Food was ok not great. Service was good waitress nice and attentive. Ambiance very loud inside hard to talk. They added 20% tip - I don't see that mentioned anywhere on the menu or website. We gave her $2.00 less than the specified amount and the waitress came back for it. Not a class act. Will never go there again or recommend it.

Yelp
Came for dinner tonight and food was so good! We had the calamari, the roasted chicken and the grilled skirt steak. We loved every dish. We went around 7:45 so it got less busy as we were sitting since they were closing at 9. The service was really good and the atmosphere was so nice!

James M.

Yelp
We have been coming here every summer for years and it was always really solid in terms of the food quality. This year it was different...almost our entire party was disappointed. Everything seemed to be very greasy and the flavors weren't great. Service wise our server was just not very friendly or attentive. We won't be going back anytime soon, there are so many great places on LBI now.
google avatar

Sue C.

Yelp
It does not matter what time of year you visit The Arlington, food, service and atmosphere is the best! A shout out to the amazing women behind the bar and in the dining room. Megan, Aubrey and Kathy. I am mainly a off season customer but I know they have a great summer staff. Also go in when the guys are there.... They are the best. Chris, Ricky and Steve....Mussels, Wings, Calamari, burgers. You will not be disappointed.

Kathy A.

Yelp
Amazing dinner. The Kale/Brussels salad is phenomenal. Mussels were delicious. Cocktails are great.

Lori R.

Yelp
BEST Espresso martini and fresh club soda and grapefruit on the island! Food is delicious and on point always! Best staff , always friendly and attentive
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Go for happy hour! This place is a definite add to the list if you are searching for a nice happy hour location. Oysters are "buck a shuck" and $4 Yuengling on draft. The staff is friendly but get there early for a seat at the bar....

Cathy R.

Yelp
Fine dining prices with a fast food experience. Dinner was served during the appetizers. Crab cakes were full of shells. Definitely not lump crab meat. We were in and out in under 40 minutes. Very disappointing meal.

Erin F.

Yelp
I have been to the Arlington so many times and most recently was incredibly disappointed. We had a reservation and were sat promptly. However we waited forever for our waitress to come. The restaurant wasn't even crowded at the time. When we got our meals I then asked for a refill of my drink, which didn't come until after I was done eating. Food ok, service was poor.
google avatar

Andrew F.

Yelp
Where to start?! While The Arlington may come off unassuming from the exterior, it's anything but. From the drinks, to the quality and presentation of the food, this is an absolutely top tier restaurant, worthy of upper echelon NYC dining accolades. The cocktails, reasonably priced between $10-12 a piece, were refreshing, not too sweet and well made with quality ingredients. The appetizers were the perfect portions, with interestingly delicious takes - from the shishito peppers in dulce de leche / sea salt drizzle, to the blackened wings with a delicious sauce, it was a great start. Moving on to the main courses, they were impressively well displayed, with the right portions, and all were full of flavor meeting the expectations of the presentation. The skirt steak, salmon, and halibut were all fantastic. Truly worthy of every star, highly recommended if you're on the island!!
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Love all the food here. We went for the carton brewery takeover, really great food and ambiance
google avatar

Cydney B.

Yelp
Stellar experience at the Arlington. Easy to make a reservation online. Host and server provided excellent service. Ambiance is fantastic. Sat outside, super comfortable. Drinks were great, food was awesome. Draft beer list is pretty extensive. Ordered doz. oysters to start, then we ordered the shrimp and grits, ahi tuna special, and shrimp cocktail with a salad. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Nice place for a drink. Drinks are good food is meh. Can get very loud. Service is always good. $$$
google avatar

Ry M.

Yelp
This restaurant is a really classy place. It is absolutely amazing and has such a fun environment! Sue was an awesome server, she was so friendly and had great recommendations for beer! The cocktails were delicious as well as all the small plates we ordered. The charbroiled oysters and octopus were a good appetizer. The crispy pork ribs had a run glaze and were juicy and mouthwatering). The crispy chicken skins were AMAZING! You definitely have to get those here!
google avatar

Georgia K.

Yelp
Crab cakes and lobster roll were terrible. Tasteless. Cold. Expensive considering the result. Place was crowded so we must have made bad menu choices. Staff was friendly and good.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
What a great local place! The food, drinks and service were amazing. I went with some work colleagues and we waited no time at all for a table for 9. The beets and wings are so yummy. I had the skirt steak(most of us did) and it was wonderful. I highly recommend. Go now before season kicks off.

Lori C.

Yelp
food was good .... service great drinks delicious.... but I did like the old look before the renovations....

Annie S.

Yelp
Stopped in on Saturday in the early afternoon with a group of us for a drink. We weren't even greeted by the bartender but he continued to make extremely rude comments to our entire group. We gave him a few chances and wound up leaving without ordering after he only became increasingly rude. The group of us (all around 30) have lived here our whole lives and most have and still bartend and serve on the island. Not a way to treat any guest let alone a group of easy-going locals in the off season. Some people had commented on The Arlington Facebook/Instagram page and the owner deleted any negative comments about our experience. Never have made a yelp review before but deemed it necessary. Such a shame. Was our first time there and will definitely not be returning.
google avatar

Dana L.

Yelp
I used to come in all the time- look forward to this place... HOWEVER- the bartenders both look like they just had root canals- like it's painful to actually be here. I mean I just wanted some drinks, wings, oysters and a SMILE!!! Get it together girls, life ain't that bad . Read and maybe say hello to your clients! The stars are for the great wings!!
google avatar

Patrick P.

Yelp
Easily the best food on the island! Cocktails where mixed to perfection. We ordered the Aioli Calamari, Shrimp and Grits, as well as the Ribeye special, all of which were so flavorful and excited our taste buds. The only comment would be that the portions were a bit small, but honestly not sure if it was the kind of day we had, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. We're leaving the island with a sense that we need to make a trek down here again soon. Great day at the beach and nice cap to the day with an elegant and delicious meal along with fantastic service top to bottom. BTW highly recommend the Paloma and the Strawberry Negroni, but at this point I'm pretty sure all the cocktails are great. We were a bit piggish today and ordered the Cheese cake and the Apple tart, and they displayed our gluttonous attitudes for great food, and they were delicious .
google avatar

Flex R.

Yelp
well well well... if it isnt...AMBIANCE. this place has everything, puffer fish, disco, quiet librarians. I love the food here. I had some sort of BEEF and POTAT. was scrumpy. would absolutely eat at this fishy establishment agee.
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
We ate at the bar and had a delicious salad and calamari. The calamari was crispy and had some bonus pieces of hot peppers and lemons that were fried. Nice lively vibe and happy hour prices. We missed the happy hr (4-6) but still worth the visit. Awesome selection of local beer too
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
We wanted to catch a Yankees game, plus we were a bit hungry.....stopped in at the Arlington. Friendly greeters as we walked in, we chose to sit at the bar (for the game) Parker was our bar tender (seems lacking in description when it was immediately obvious with her empithetic / understanding mannerisms, that she was all about making our experience an enjoyable one!!) Making sure we had everything we needed for starters, and for our late afternoon lunch, Parker was an integral part in our enjoying the meal....and the game! Food, drinks and experience were all, A+ !

Sayde L.

Yelp
We were a party of 8. Our table was waiting for us so we were off to a great start. Our wait person was a bit stiff and not friendly. That said 6 of 8 really enjoyed their meals. The other two thought it was meh. I liked the ambiance and thought my swordfish was very good. I would recommend the Arlington and would definitely go back
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I like this place. The atmosphere is nice and they are pretty food-allergy friendly. Recently I got the swordfish which the fish itself was good but the polenta was a bit too salty. The salmon here is really good as well as the vast majority of the appetizers that I've tried. Good place!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Enjoyed our meal at the Arlington last night. A decent amount of gluten free items. The beet app was large and delicious and I also enjoyed the steak special. Steak was cooked as requested and tender. My daughter enjoyed the organic chicken meal. We would return.

Claudia M.

Yelp
Sat at bar alone which was dirty and barmaid/waitress arrived with a head wrap and I asked if she could clean the bar. She basically ignored me and frisbeed a menu through the slop on the bar to run and talk to ,I assume, 'regulars'. Never returned. Finally a bartender showed and wiped the bar after I asked again - do they not do this regularly after guests leave??? He was pleasant though after he delivered my salad then my meal showed up by a runner who frisbeed that at me and ran away before I could ask for new utensils....ok so I used the old. No one ever picked up the salad plate so when I finished my meal I placed it on top of my salad plate. Then who shows up but the frisbee barmaid/waitress from the start and asked 'are you done with these?' Really??? I said 'yes' and she rolled her eyes at the other bartenders as she walked away. I guess her headband is too tight or she is just not cut out for the business. What a disgrace of a service person and the food was mediocre at best. Not sure this place is worth it but always try places again as I have been on this island 65 years. Too bad this woman had an attitude as that changed the perspective of the entire place. One bad apple as the say....
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
I was in the area with my family and stopped by for lunch. Being that its the off season, there is basically nothing open so this place gets points for being open year round and having a parking lot. It's got a rustic, colonial tavern vibe with a huge beer, wine list and some inventive cocktails. The menu has some diverse offerings from the standard mussels and seafood fare to Asian vegan and falafel. I tried the crabcake sandwich ($13) which tasted fresh, flavorful, but was a bit too soft and fell apart quickly. The fries were also perfect. Unfortunately, my family's dishes were sort of blah from the market salad ($8) that was mostly celery and then an order of mussels which wasn't anything special. The service was also on the slow side but again it was the off season. A-ok for sure.
google avatar

Madison C.

Yelp
This place is not adhering to CDC guidelines for COVID. While servers are wearing masks guests are sitting about 2-3 feet away from other guests, seeing their closely placed outdoor seating was horrifying. NJ has had 342 new cases of COVID each day and this place is pushing customers next to strangers in their dining area. Do not go here if you value your health!
google avatar

Melanie P.

Yelp
Great spot for any occasion! The menu has something for everybody, and all of it was amazing! Definitely suggest the steamed mussels as an appetizer, probably the best mussels I've ever had. Our waitress Courtney was so kind, helpful, attentive, and made sure our food came out right on time. The pasta was absolutely amazing and although the portions look small, it was a good amount of food. Super cute place with a nice atmosphere, 10/10 recommend!!
google avatar

Francisco D.

Yelp
Was a bit worried about going out, but the way the tables were setup outside made me feel comfortable about eating out today! The food that came afterward, the service and overall dining experience was fabulous. Recommend it easily to anyone who is visiting LBI.

Dana R.

Yelp
The service was awful. Our main entree dish was spicy. We sat in the quieter area. We got three pieces of bread that was cold. We wouldn't eat there again.
google avatar

Teacher P.

Yelp
Arlington is one of our favorite local spots- especially for their apps, draft beers, and barrel aged whiskey. Their wings are my absolute favorite around, crispy and seasoned amazingly. Oysters are also a must try! The atmosphere is nice overall, but we mostly enjoy sitting near the bar area which has more of an eclectic city feel. The service is always friendly and good, but it does get busy so be prepared to wait at times. Definitely worth checking out and an added bonus is being able to dine outside on a nice evening.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
I like how convenient the Arlington is to the beach. With all the fresh seafood being served, it is awesome that the restaurant is so close to the source! The decor at the Arlington is old school dark wood with wallpaper sporting artsy pufferfish. Something about the way the restaurant looks let's you know you're going to be getting some delicious seafood. I ordered the kale salad, which is pretty much a Caesar salad, and I added the blackened shrimp. The salad was very good, not over-dressed at all, and I loved the added flavor that came from the blackened shrimp. I also ordered the raw oysters that came from LBI. The oysters were fresh, salty, and delicious. They arrived to the table with lemon, cocktail sauce, and vinegar. I would've liked some more creativity with the condiments but the oysters were so good they didn't really need it. I was very happy with the food at the Arlington, but everything was just a bit over priced. My salad was $17 after I added the shrimp and all together it was not a lot of food. However, if you're not worried about your bill, I would definitely recommend the Arlington.
google avatar

Cristina P.

Yelp
Excellent eats-- trendy, cool ambiance! Little loud but overall great and would recommend. It's pricy, but the quality of the food makes it worth it. The chicken wings, skirt steak and Pimm's cup were out of this world.
