This is a nice little museum, though outside the "special exhibits" the holdings are nothing exciting. The museum makes excellent use of every space, from rooms that clearly serve as meeting areas through to the ante room to the restrooms -- all are filled with well-displayed paintings, sculptures etc. Don't miss going up to the 3rd floor so you can get up close and personal with a large Chihuly glass hanging.
We had to good fortune to visit during an exhibit of Christmas trees -- keep reading, I can hear you thinking "ukk, Christmas trees?? -- stay with me. This is a tree exhibit sponsored every year, whereby local elementary and middle school classes are given a concept, and then judged on how well they research and, using hand-made items, execute the concept. Museum visitors get to vote on which tree they think did the best at this task. This year's concept was countries -- the kids were to research the country, its history and sociology, as well as its Christmas traditions, and decorate the tree accordingly. With 30 trees arranged around the large exhibit space, making our selection took a while. We finally settled on Haiti, as the tree that combined a pleasing aesthetic and the high % of decorations hand made by the children. But others came close - Mexico and Russia were particular stunning but fell back because of the lower % of hand-made decor.
One bravo and two complaints about the rest of the museum: Thank you for providing a wheelchair; it made a great difference in my ability to enjoy the day.
But -- the staff in the admissions/gift shop were less than friendly, obviously had more important things to talk about than to give assistance to one tourist who wanted to drop a bit of money. And a second complaint -- the temperature, which hovered somewhere north of freezing. We had to give up completely on the History of Rock and Roll exhibit on the top floor, because by that point I was shivering too hard to read the informational cards. C'mon folks, there's got to be a balance between keeping the art safe and keeping your patrons from freezing.
