I'm a big fan of the Athenian, having tried it exactly once while we were staying in east London and got it delivered on Deliveroo. So I was very excited when I came down to Dominique Ansel's to pick up some cronuts and nearly broke my neck when I turned it so fast as I discovered the Athenian had now opened exactly next door.
Life, why you gotta be so cruel? You know I'm never going to be able to eat everything I want from both places at the same time? #firstworldproblems
Unfortunately it was then some weeks before I finally got down to actually try this branch of The Athenian just simply due to work pressures. It was worth the wait. The actual inside of the restaurant is quite small, and not helped by the middle table and the stools getting in the way of the queue - but I can see why, as otherwise they probably would have only had about eight seats total.
Staff are friendly, but the main star is the souvaki, which is sensational. I've had it in Athens, and it's nothing like this - this is far better quality, and the flavours are amazing. I'm going to have to work my way through the various sauces you can get on the souvaki, but I have to say that while the spicy feta sauce does sound good in theory (and is great as a dip on the side), don't get it on the souvaki. It's very stodgy and makes it kinda hard to eat the second half (and you want to eat that second half, because they're soooo good). Try to keep to something lighter that'll keep you palate fresh, because remember at this place, not only are you getting something wrapped in bread but there's also chips in with your filling. That's a lot of carbs to add a cheese based sauce to (even if it's a very tasty cheese based sauce).
The oregano and feta fries are to die for. Just simply Greek crack served in a restaurant. It's beyond belief how good the food from this place is.
