16 Best Restaurants on Martha’s Vineyard | Eater Boston

"It’s not all seafood on this island. The Attic is an acclaimed Vineyard Haven spot known for its robust burgers and wide whiskey selection. The moody, upstairs space is perfect for sipping a cocktail and chatting with visitors and locals alike. The burger menu has seven different options, including everything from a classic smash burger to the Mr. Bowen with balsamic onion jam, baby spinach, melted brie cheese, braised short rib, and red wine gravy." - Celina Colby

Our party visited the Attic by recommendation for our friend's birthday celebration. So glad we could get a reservation the day before. The atmosphere was intimate, warm and inviting like a summer cottage. The food and drinks were soooo good. We shared the watermelon salad, muscles and warm bread to dip in the sauce and I personally had the baked chicken with mashed potatoes and sautéed summer squash & zucchini. Everything g was seasoned well and super flavorful. The portions were so bug I had leftovers for the next day. the Our waiter was incredible - friendly, accommodating, attentive and took the best pics of our group with the birthday girl. What shocked me most is how friendly the other patrons were. They asked if they could watch our stuff while we took pics, one senior lady offered to take our when we were waiting on our waiter to come back, and another older man ran after us when we went in another room for our pic to make sure we weren't forgetting our things at the table.

You may not expect to find an out of this world's Burger on Martha's Vineyard, but here it is! This was my last stop of the day and the video says it all. Excellent, well built over stuffed burger, the tuna Tartare is excellent but the freshness really kicked it up a notch, and the fried cheese curds that a random person sitting next to me demanded that I put in the video were addictive. During a recent visit to The Attic Restaurant, I had the chance to explore a variety of items off their menu and I walked away already looking forward to my next visit. The meal began with a mix of appetizers and mains—Tuna Tartar, Attic Wings, Beets, Steak Au Poivre, Lobster Corn Fritters , Hot and Cold Lobster Rolls accompanied by drinks. The standouts for me were definitely the drinks, the Hot and Cold Lobster Rolls and the Steak Au Poivre of which all were incredibly flavorful and satisfying. The Attic Wings had just the right amount of kick, the Beets were cooked to perfection, rich and well-seasoned and the Lobster Corn Fritters were packed with flavored and served with a nice size of lump lobster. However, I thought the side of mashed potatoes did lacked flavor and texture, and the Tuna Tartar didn’t quite live up to expectations and wish there had been more avocado to help balance the taste. The rice was not prepared completely. Overall, the good definitely outweighed the bad. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, making it a great spot to unwind and enjoy good food with friends/family. The laid-back vibe, along with the service of Anthony the bartender (definitely ask for him to make your drinks) and Lobster rolls and Steak Au Poivre , makes The Attic Restaurant a place I’ll definitely be returning to.

Due to cancelled flights we ended up eating at The Attic three times on our visit to Martha’s Vineyard. The food and drinks were excellent and the atmosphere was so inviting. AJ, Vicky, and Alicia were all outstanding servers!!

The Attic in Vineyard Haven is truly a gem from the moment you walk in, the energy is welcoming, and the drinks are outstanding. Tully, the Beverage Director, is an expert at crafting the perfect cocktail, and the espresso martini is one of the best we've ever had. The entire staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and makes every visit feel special, whether you’re grabbing a casual drink or settling in for a full meal. As for the food, it’s everything you want and more. The burgers are juicy and packed with flavor, the mac and cheese is the ultimate comfort dish with the perfect balance of creaminess and richness, and the chicken wings are absolutely next-level — crispy, flavorful, and unforgettable. The Attic nails that perfect mix of great drinks, incredible food, and a laid-back but polished vibe that keeps you coming back again and again. PS: if you are a whiskey or bourbon lover, this is THE place for you! Their collection is impressive!

Our server Bella was phenomenal! She made our whole night. The gimlet was THE BEST I've ever had! We loved the lobster roll and the mac and cheese. THIS IS A MUST!

Went for an early dinner around 5pm with the family. We ate here last year and the food was really good and the service was excellent so Im going to be factual with my comments as I have no preconceived biases. The restaurant was relatively quiet when we were seated with maybe 2-3 other tables being occupied. My wife and I and 2 of our children ordered the French onion soup to start as we had done in the past. The soup came out ice cold and pretty much bland. We were very polite and let our server know about it and she took the soups back to the kitchen (I haven’t sent food back in like 15 years). They brought the soups back about 10 minutes later still not piping hot but whatever. Our server basically said that because we sent the soups back to be heated up that threw off the timing of our entrees. So our main courses arrived about 40 seconds after our soup did and unfortunately they were ice cold too. I ordered the boneless honey BBQ wings which were cold and rubbery. My son had the chicken sandwich which he completely left because he said it too was cold but didn’t want the kitchen staff to feel bad because we already sent the soups back. My little guy also ordered the boneless chicken wings and they were piping hot and the girls ordered salads and Mac n cheese which they said were good. There was no manager in site and nobody really seemed to care too much that our dinner was pretty much a disaster. That’s the unfortunate part about this experience as the restaurant business is all about good quality food and great customer service. That’s what keeps families coming back and when families come back everyone wins. My intention of this review is not to bash anyone or anything as it’s intention is to inform the team at the Attic that they just have to do better. It’s all about being attentive to your customers and paying attention to the little details that make a restaurant thrive.

Delicious food! Our waitress, Alicia, was the best and so kind! She made sure we had everything we needed. The drinks were great, too!

Yelp
My wife, two year old and I had a really wonderful time here at 5pm on a Friday. Service was prompt, proactive, and friendly. The cocktails were really good (the Gimlet, Dracula on the Beach, and Paper Plane). Gluten free items are plentiful and marked. The food was solid. We had the poutine, which was huge and delicious. And we had the attic salad, which was tasty. Kiddo had the hot dog and fries, and a Shirley Temple (it was vacation!) The restaurant had a chic high chair and no one cared that our child was playing with a toy car on the table. We had a really great time all around.

Yelp
The ambiance and the service were good, but the food was really not. The homemade veggie burger tasted good, but was soggy. The french fries were soggy too, so we sent them back to prepare another batch. This batch came back hotter but still soggy. All in all, at least half of our party was disappointed. Given the prices for the food, we definitely expected better

Yelp
Delicious hamburgers. Kids Love their Mac and cheese. Good service. Nice atmosphere Have to walk upstairs to get there

Yelp
Bella (our waitress) was great! She gave us great recommendations which did not disappoint. The short rib poutine should be listed as a meal and not an appetizer. It is so filling and more than the four of us could share. It was delicious!! A must have but beware because it's a very large portion. The burgers are HUGE. It's big enough for two people to share - if you don't have a huge appetite. The Brussel sprouts are delicious!! Period. The lobster Mac and cheese was great. The lobster was poached and cooked perfectly. Again, a huge portion. Be hungry!!! My lychee martini was great!! I wish I could tell you about the steak but my daughter wouldn't share and ate it all. So I'll assume that was great too. The chocolate chip cookie dessert and carrot cake are delicious!!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!!! This food was some of the best I've ever had, and my friends and I had a blast! We ended up going twice during our 3 day vacation Our waitress Vickey was absolutely amazing, she was so friendly and ready to help accommodate some of our complicated allergies! The drinks were really creative and DELICIOUS and the decor was exactly that "attic" aesthetic but in a fun way! 10/10 will go back to MV just to eat here again!

Yelp
Overall experience was pleasant, I think the food has a little room for improvement though. My sister and I swung by for a late dinner on our last evening visiting the island. There was a wait for a table, although we were able to snag a pair of lounge chairs in the bar area. For drinks, I went with a French 75. It was good. I had a filling lunch so I went with a salad for dinner. The Attic Salad included mixed greens, candied walnuts, apples, pomegranate, fried goat cheese, and apple cider vinaigrette ($18). To make it plant-based I omitted the cheese. It was okay, the greens could have been a little more fresh. My sister ordered the Sticky Sesame Cauliflower entree. I think she liked it enough. I had a taste and thought it was decent. I do appreciate that they have several vegan/vegetarian options, and service was good! Overall I'd recommend stopping by for a drink, perhaps before or after dinner.

Yelp
We are regular visitors on the island (multiple times a year) and LOVE the Waterside Market. We were hoping it would carryover to their sister restaurant. Sadly, I didn't. Seated right away which was good since we had two hungry kids. Drinks were slow - the waitress told us there was only one bartender and apologized up front. No big deal. We ordered our meals when our drinks were dropped off. It took 1 hr and 8 minutes for our food to arrive. Must have been the bartender making the food too? When I politely asked if my 9 yr old could have another soda the waitress, who was really nice, told me it would be another charge until I pointed out how patient they had been waiting the hour plus for their food. My wife had the pulled pork Mac n Cheese which she said was really good. My son's chicken tender and fries also good. My chicken sandwich (was the special that night) while tasty, was a lot of the topping with a relatively small /thin piece of chicken and a little of batter. My daughter got the "jumbo" hot dog. Maybe they ran out of the regularly supplied ones as there was nothing jumbo about it. Slightly larger than a Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage link, and equally shriveled up. Doubt we'll be back unfortunately.

Yelp
Stumbled on this place while in the area. Wanted table service and a good appetizer and drink. Was not disappointed. Such a hidden gem. Highly recommend. Prices are on par for service and ambience and quality. Definitely recommend if you're in Vineyard Haven.

Yelp
We had a very nice evening here. The service was excellent, and the drinks were strong. The service was fantastic, and the food was superb. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Great casual place to relax. Good wines by the glass. Great fries and burgers, Brussel sprouts app. Friendly staff. I would certainly recommend.

Yelp
Excellent dining experience, friendly and attentive staff. The food is top notch but beware of walking out stuffed as the portions are large. Favorite dishes... Short-rib poutine, listed as a starter but can be shared for a main meal. Burger selection has many unique choices and are belly fillers. Many variations on mac and cheese are standouts. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This was our second time at the attic. First time we got a turkey burger and a smash burger. The turkey burger was gross and gamey. The fries were old and tasted like they had been in a warmer for hours. Smashburger fine. Decided to give it a second chance. Very bad front of house service. Despite it being 5:45 (eating early before a play) and the restaurant largely empty, the hostess would not seat us at one of the 8-10 open 4tops because there were only 2 of us. We said we'd eat outside at a 2-top. She said no - outside didn't open until 6. She only offered an uncomfortable high top bar table straddling a barrel. Simply not feasible for my 82 year old father. I had to be "that lady" and complain to other staff to get seated at a regular table. Bad training, poor service, and just bad business. Food much better than first time but not sure this place is worth it.

Yelp
Our experience was unexceptional. We ordered the salmon rice plate for $32/each. The salmon was overcooked and the remainder the plate -- rice, carrots, and cabbage -- had no dressing/sauce/flavor. When I asked for salt and pepper, I was given the smallest paper packets on earth, some of which were empty. A disappointing experience.
google avatar

Renee L.

Yelp
Drinks took 37 minutes to get to the table, while the bartender and servers were taking a shot behind the bar. Server was inattentive. The food was good, but based on the service , we would not return.

Yelp
Food 2.5 Service 4.5 Ambiance ?? The food was very un interesting. My husband had onion soup which he didn't like and a burger and fries. At least it was hot. I had Mac n cheese - could have been cold soup. With Brussels on top. Also cold. + 2 drinks. $120 for bar food.

Yelp
Super cozy little spot. The food was all great and the service was excellent. Will definitely be going back to try the burger next time!

Yelp
I love the attic it is my go to spot after work. The bartenders and servers are top notch always attentive and out going. I highly recommend the short rib poutine it is an amazing dish and the burgers never disappoint. If Kelsey is on the bar you can guarantee you will have an amazing experience!!!!!!

Yelp
While we understand it's Summer and busy a table's meal should come out together. Ours did not and they didn't acknowledge the error. Only after I asked was I given "we're busy" answer from the waitress. After asking to speak to a Manager he finally acknowledged the error but it didn't come without hesitation. That meal was ultimately comped by the Manager which we appreciate but the waitress never returned to our table to check on us. We found the food nothing to rave about and the atmosphere was dirty with an off putting smell. Plenty of better choices in VH dine elsewhere.

Yelp
I don't even like mac and cheese. This mac and cheese is so good, I'm eating leftovers with my fingers several hours later. Lovely atmosphere.

Yelp
Saturday night! Wow. This vibe is it in VH. Actually this is an anchor spot and restaurant that is part of the food revitalization in VH. Yes, Food revitalization! I laugh at other Yelp reviews in front of me because I'm regretting I wasn't on this earlier to be the first reviewer as this was NOT my first visit to The Attic. This Saturday night we were with friends and while I thought he was picking up the tab (which means I order an over abundance of food and drinks cause someone else is paying for it), he didn't and I did and was more than happy to since it was worthy. Google has all 5 star reviews and Yelp as of lately become this "Karen" of sorts site that seems to take the complainers to the forefront. Let me tell you, there's nothing to complain about The Attic. The floors are wooden and tons of character in this location! I remember the days (nostalgia coming here) when there was astro turf for flooring up in Le Grenier (another great restaurant serving French faire). The owners have done a remarkable job turning this into a speakeasy bourbon bar which is kinda ironic to me because until November of 2022 you couldn't GET A DRINK WITHOUT ORDERING FOOD. Years ago under Le Grenier you couldn't even get a drink unless you brought it yourself. So to wait 10 minutes for a drink to come to your table is a blessing! Now you enter this restaurant and kinda feel like you're in prohibition days (minus the overly large muscular man at the door with a threatening glare and the sliding viewfinder or the flirtatious woman slinging drinks behind the bar)! Now you can sit at the 6 seat bar or in the bar/ waiting are and get a drink before you have dinner. Which is what we did! This food and concept is new here. So to say they're known for something is ... well, it's just kinda ignorant. This is the third newer restaurant in Vineyard Haven which is slowly becoming known for something other than high taxes and "you can't get a drink there" The Attic has been open for a weeks (at the time of this review) and while it takes time to find your groove, well, this place has found their groove pretty darn quick .We enjoyed a couple of cocktails at the table (Bourbon based) along with the Attic Wings done two different ways!!! Worthy apps. Dinner we decided on looking around and seeing what was coming out of the kitchen to the other tables! Fritters, Burgers and.... Wow.. A burger that had to duck getting into the room (ceilings are low which add additional ambiance to this speakeasy ).. I had the burger (no bun) with pulled pork on top called the Brickhouse, another had the fish burger and the others had the Black and Blue and a Classic... I'm telling you, one person took a bag home with 1/2 her burger and the other 3 polished everything off! We settled on a night cap and laughed the night away without our waiter putting pressure on us to get the heck up and leave! It was a nice place to meet friends without feeling like people were listening to our conversation and it was great to see the place busy with people enjoying themselves. Yelp needs to be used to promote business and not cancel culture them. If you have a problem, and I didn't here, I call the manager the next day and tell them. Not looking for free anything just to make it a better place to dine and hopefully stay around.

Mae A.

Yelp
Google Assistant said the place had a wait time for seating of 5 minutes but when we got there it was an hour, so interesting start. Once we were seated we ordered our food before they even put water in our glasses but our appetizers took at least twenty minutes to come out, since our waiter was also the bartender we didn't see him often either. Once the appetizer got to our table finally we contemplated leaving and paying for just the appetizer but we couldn't even track down our waiter to do so. So we got our food ate and left, the food being mediocre at best. Wouldn't recommend if you didn't wanna come back to your hotel fussy and annoyed.

Cindi K.

Yelp
I'm shocked by the bad reviews! Someone must have turned this place around because our dining experience was almost perfect. I say almost only because of the lack of flavored vodkas and no screwball whiskey. I had the fish sandwich minus the lettuce and tomato and I added pickles. The pic isn't great but you can see the breading is not thick like another review mentioned. I also swapped the fries for roasted carrots, which were delicious. My husband had the Hoisin Salmon bowl. The fish with coleslaw was the perfect bite and my husband enjoyed his so much he suggested we go again the next night. Our server was Derick and he was attentive, professional and friendly. We will definitely return!

Michael W.

Yelp
Great burgers and service, amazing whiskey list, and the speakeasy motif is very cool

Mark L.

Yelp
Got takeout for 4 people. Quality and quantity were top notch. The short rib mac and cheese was excellent, and generous with the short rib. I will be going back!

Yelp
I wish I could say I enjoyed dinner tonight. Got together with old friends to catch up on life. We were looking forward to a nice dinner and good conversation. We sat out on the patio - fairly nice ambience. We were greeted by a friendly server within 10 minutes of being seated and were offered water straightaway. The server came back to take our orders after a few minutes. 2 burgers, kid's grilled cheese and a side of asparagus. Simple meals I would think.... We waited for 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Another table seated after us received their food far before we were served. When our food arrived, the side of asparagus consisted of 5 sprigs- boiled, limp on a little white plate. We unfortunately could hold back a laugh. I immediately felt badly about that. The french fries were greasy and overcooked and the burgers were salty. I actually enjoyed my friends daughter's grilled cheese over everything else. When I was asked by the manager how our dinners were I let her know about the greasy, overcooked fries. She responded by saying "that's too bad". Yes. It was too bad about this place. I worked in the restaurant business for 20 years. I certainly had my share of making mistakes. But I always made sure the guests knew that I cared and were taken care of. I was very fortunate to work in restaurants that put care and love into their food. I wonder if this might be missing here. I hope The Attic makes it. I still miss Le Grenier - quality and love in everything. Big shoes to fill.

Yelp
My friends and I wanted to meet for drinks and someone suggested the Attic. When we got there the hostess offered us indoor dining or outdoor dining. We chose to eat inside because we heard amazing things about their bar. I had high expectations that were beyond exceeded, the food was great, and the service and drinks were top-notch. We can't wait to go back and sit outside this time, when we left the porch was full and the vibe seemed great!

Mary Lou S.

Yelp
Where do I begin? Friends of mine were visiting from off-island and they own a restaurant and I had heard so many great things about the food at the Attic so I figured we'd start there. Well, we started there and ended there! The food was so delicious that we went back 3 times during their 5-night stay! I can't even tell you what my favorite dish was because everything was on point. I highly recommend the burgers though but you better go hungry because they are the biggest and best on MV. I am looking forward to going back and trying the few things we haven't yet. WELL DONE ATTIC!!! We will be back this week!

Scott K.

Yelp
This place was a mess from the start. We waited to be seated at the hostess desk outside as we were instructed by the staff only to be bypassed by other patrons who went inside ahead of us and were then seated as we patiently waited. The only bright spot were the cocktails. We were immediately served our Brussel sprout appetizer which amazed not only us but the server as well. It was cold and clearly was a dreg from another order as it was cold and likely recycled from sitting as the lime on top looked like it came out of a food dehydrator. The best was yet to come. My burger arrived with cold oily fries, the wings were undercooked and they brought us the wrong order . When we brought it to their attention were interrogated if we had touched any of the wings, I suspect it was going back to keep the brussel sprouts company. The grand finale was the fish sandwich. The fish was buried in 2 inches of breading on each side and served with cold frieds on a bun. The vein of fish would be a challenge to find even for a seasoned miner from the 1840's What do you expect for 200 dollars for a burger, wings, fish sandwich and chicken. If you must go, get a cocktail and then go to the beach which never disappoints.

MaryLou P.

Yelp
The smash burger..... to die for. A must go to when on Martha's Vineyard!! Oh and don't forget to order the brussel sprouts! Amazing !!

Mattie W.

Yelp
burgers were great, good service and fast too!! would definitely go back to try the lemon chicken everyone's raving about!!

Victoria C.

Yelp
awful service and we are islanders - we had a toddler and the table next to us who came in late got their food way before us. we understand a busy season but this was outrageous. never going back most likely. fries very overdone and burgers good, her cheeseburger half cooked. apologies but will never be back

Hanson M.

Yelp
Sat down upstairs and noticed that the floors were a bit uneven making it a bit difficult to get settled at our table. It took quite a while before we were introduced to our waiter and served water. I wanted a drink really bad and about 15 minutes later received mine. Not a good way to start. Ordered the sweet crispy brussel sprouts appetizer. They werent crisp and were smothered with this awful sweet sauce right out of the jar and I just couldnt eat them . Oh and by the way a second waiter came up to our table and said he was our waiter and we told him we already had one. My friend told me that they are known for their steak ou poivre so i /we ordered it. Worst steak I have ever ordered. Came to the table cold. Smothered in cold gravy. Garlic mashed potatoes were cold and tasteless as well. And for $48 should have sent it back and I would have except my girlfriend would have gotten extremely upset because we were with a special family member so I just sucked it up. $185 later worst food and steak ever. Stay away or just go in for a drink. Supposed to be under new management. Should have stuck with the old. Oh also other friend ordered the lobster roll. So smothered with mayo it looked like a white bunch of slop. I absolutely would have sent that one back also. Save you $$$ and stay away.
