The 6 Best Restaurants & Bars In Catskill, New York 2024 - The Catskills - The Infatuation

"The Avalon is a music venue that’s as integral to the Hudson Valley local music scene as André 3000 is to Outkast. It also happens to be part Korean restaurant, part soju bar, and part dance and karaoke spot. There will likely be a band playing “neon-doused ambient house” or “cathartic jangle-damaged pop,” and even if you have no idea what those genres sound like, you should still come here to eat some Korean food in the dark, taxidermy-filled bar before a show. Feast on spicy twice-fried chicken wings, steamed pork mandu, or a bulgogi bowl before mumbling your best rendition of “Running Up That Hill” into the karaoke mic." - clare lagomarsino

Lovely energy, super quaint lounge! We ran into the chef, and she's a super sweet Korean elder who set us up with bimbap and billiards. 10/10 recommend 😌

Google
Wonderful place for a party! Drink selection was so nice and the food was very good. Upstairs and downstairs were both nice way to spread out. Check out the very intriguing bathrooms.

Google
My band Xentrifuge performed here at an event called "Hororteria". The staff of the venue were very welcoming and helpful. The space itself was very nice and big enough for a crowd but not too big where it was overwhelming. The stage was a good size. The guests themselves seemed to enjoy themselves and the atmosphere of the place. Overall, we would definitely love to perform there again and we recommend it to others.

Google
Amazing rave scene tonight at avalon. Great music, good drinks, and good people.

Google
The food is really bad :( I wish they knew how bad their food is. Dumplings made me really sad. The only reason we ate that much because we have to sober up and leave this place.

Google
It may be a limited menu of Korean staples, but with unlimited flavor. Just delicious! If you're traveling there for a show, bring a cooler with some ice packs for leftovers (you WILL have some, and you WILL want to be sure they make it home!). While the list of craft brews on tap is short, it covers enough of a variety of styles to satisfy most beer fanciers. Definitely looking forward to catching another show there (soon, I hope!).

Google
Great people. Great food. Fun event venue and interesting music. Liam and Laura are the best.

Google
Incredible food, extraordinary staff, small and great sounding venue, feels like home.

Yelp
What a lovely lounge in the middle of Catskill proper! Their bar menu is Korean-based, I enjoyed the kimbap. Scallion pancake was okay, it's different but not bad. The evening I went they had a disco night, started to get crowded around 11:00 pm in their front dance area. The disco night was a very welcoming space to all and focused also on dancing with consent. There's a large upstairs space with a pool table you can use for free; sometimes if there is a wait, you can reserve it by putting your name with the bartender downstairs on a list. Overall it was a great spot and the people are friendly

Yelp
Great space to relax, eat, drink or see a show. I love that they have sake in a can. Korean food is delicious and there's an upstairs lounge with pool or just quiet sofas if you want a space to talk.

Yelp
$25 cover? How about go fuck yourself. Not my favorite place. Firstly, they do not have a full bar. It's a selection of beer and a small selection of wine, mostly Korean. No liquor. That's right, this bar does not have liquor. Secondly, I don't know why this place always cries the blues needing fundraising to keep them open. You're a business, figure it out or close up shop, but don't go asking the public for donations. Lastly, went to an event a couple weeks ago, but I guess we were too preppy because for the first time in our lives, we were denied entry into a bar, which is probably good because it was a ridiculous $25 cover.

Yelp
Me and my mother came because we were hungry and far from home. Even though they were a bar they allowed minors, which was awesome. We ordered and the food was out extremely fast. It was delicious, simple and spicy. We played pool till we finished our food. It had a great vibe and was just a lot of fun. (My 13 y/o some wrote this review). I agree wholeheartedly.

Yelp
I love the Avalon Lounge. The food is really good and the bartenders are kind. The upstairs is comfy and the pool is free. I'm grateful I get to have Avalon in my neighborhood.

Laura S.

Yelp
Food was excellent and fast. Ordered online via phone and grabbed a table. Drinks were a little slow but friendly. Saw a nice show and played pool upstairs. Cool spot.

Yelp
I initially had low expectations of this place considering there weren't that many Asian spots in the area but was pleasantly surprised by their dishes! We ordered the pork bibimbap, scallion pancakes, and wings. They offer huge portions so you'll definitely be full with just a couple of dishes between two people. While the pork bibimbap (which had large pieces of sliced, spicy pork belly and a nice assortment of veggies) and wings (super crunchy with a nice sweet and slightly spicy sauce) are a must, you can probably skip the scallion pancakes. They're much thicker than the traditional Korean scallion pancakes so they taste more doughy than anything (not a bad thing but something to take note of). Highly recommend this spot for authentic Korean food!

Yelp
JP is an awesome bartender and brings people into this business. Kitchen wasn't available when we were there, but our friend from the area said it was great and we trust her (I guess... for food recommendations).

Yelp
Delicious Korean food. Cool, artistic atmosphere. Great music. Friendly service. Vibes are immaculate. My partner and I each had a kombucha and split the bibimbap. Great value for the amount of food. We really enjoyed playing pool upstairs & listening to the alt 80s/90s playlist. If you're looking for a spot to relax and unwind after work or have laid back fun on a weekend look no further. We wish we had a bar like this back in the city!

Yelp
The food was really good. I got the tofu plate. It was a little salty but overall good.

Yelp
Would not go back had no beer that I wanted and have no liquor except Korean which is 25% .....dj was also terrible only played the same type of songs and took no request from anyone on dance floor

Eric G.

Yelp
Food was disappointing, particularly the "scallion pancakes" which were deep fried triangles of what tasted like potato. It made absolutely no sense. The only item we thought was good was the chicken wings in a delicious, spicy sauce. Staff were pleasant and friendly and the decor is perhaps the weirdest in the Hudson Valley. We were there for lunch but they apparently have a lot of music at night.

Yelp
The food is super great! Coming back very soon! I had the steak kimbap, tofu plate and the pancake. Super delish!

Kerri P.

Yelp
My fiancé and I went to the Catskills this weekend and were recommended this place by our Airbnb host. It was beyond delicious! We had the chicken wings which were SO crispy! We had another dish (forget the name) but it had steak, rice noodles, rice, carrots, and onions. Also amazing! If we're ever back in the area, we will 100% stop by to eat again!! PS: when we got there, there was only one other table which made us nervous. But do NOTTTT let that steer you away! So yummy.

Yelp
Wether you're a local, a weekender or a visitor to the area, be sure to check out Avalon! It's the sort of place nearly anybody can feel comfortable. It's a great addition to Catskill. The food is authentic korean, and good. 2 of us had the beef bulgogi, the wings and the crunchy fried tofu.. we both left full. They have a full bar and regular entertainment.

Yelp
We've lived in the area for a few years and this place is a highlight . It essentially kept us alive during the pandemic . Great food . The inside is unique . Feels like Brooklyn before it went mainstream .

Rebecca S.

Yelp
This place is great, unique, and a much needed hang out/ fine acoustics, music venue, really delicious Korean food...try it, you'll love it. Good wine and beer bar, great dance floor, pool table and lounge upstairs All around great vibe.

Richard S.

Yelp
I love the food here and ordering during the lock-down was a life-saver. Fresh and clean flavors and large portions....this place is da bomb!

Yelp
Avalon offers easy online ordering and online payment for takeout and also delivery for orders over $20 within 8 miles. My family did a big takeout order with wings, scallion pancakes, and pork kimchi dumplings for appetizers. I got the crunchy fried tofu plate, and my husband and boys shared the noodles with steak and the noodles with pork. I would have taken pictures but everything was so delicious I forgot before it was almost gone! Generous portions, including for appetizers! My tofu was perfectly fried and crunchy with a spicy sauce, served with rice and spinach/zucchini. The scallion pancakes were also a dream, savory and spicy with a nice dipping sauce. My husband and boys said all the meat dishes were also delicious, and my kids are picky eaters. For the above takeout order, it was about $75. So not cheap but enough food for more than one meal and high quality. We also got some rose lemonade, Mexican coke, and ginger beer. They also offer alcoholic drinks. We will definitely be back. Very pleased to discover this place!

Yelp
The same people who run the incredible HiLo also run this place. An amazing offering of dj's, dancing, and a bar downstairs and a relaxed lounge vibe upstairs, but wait there's more: you order drinks and Korean food at the bar downstairs and you take a number to put on your table and they will deliver it to you upstairs or down. The portions are generous and the food tasty. The upstairs has a great Williamsburg 90s vibe--before it was ruined by trustafarians and bankers. Prices are reasonable and the pool table is free.

Yelp
We eat here about once a week! We almost always get the tofu plate, spicy wings (gochujang spicy!) and the fried chicken sandwich (whenever it's on the menu), but everything we've had has been delicious. Love it!
