It was a beautiful spring day and we were looking for a fun, socially distanced, outside activity. We had planned on several occasions to check out the many murals Providence has to offer, and this 70 plus sunny day beckoned us to do so. The Avenue Concept Downtown Self-Guided Public Art Tour lists seven mural locations on their map:
* Blue Moon
* We Are One Flock-Young, Gifted, and Black
* She Never Came Mural
* Adventure Time Mural
* Misty Blue Mural
* Still Here Mural
* VOTE mural
And they also have four sculpture locations:
* The Icosahedron + The Rusty Spire
* Follow Your Heart
* Collusion-Cotyledon-Condemned
* Sail Dream
We were able to see all of these during a walk that lasted about 90-minutes. It's a fairly flat route, though it does require waiting for lights to cross a few busy roads. It covers a fairly significant amount of downtown Providence which is a very walkable city.
Their website says their tours are best experienced using an app (both iPhone or Android). Through the app you can follow suggested routes or create your own path through this open-air art gallery. The app provides an interactive experience, including photos, videos and thought-provoking prompts to help you go deeper. You can scan QR codes for more info, read about the art on the app, or read the plaques which are next to the murals and sculptures.
To say that many of these murals are inspiring is an understatement. One of our favorite murals is 45 feet high, and as you approach the base, you will be amazed at the scope and effort which was undertaken.
Our personal favorites included Still Here by Gaia, She Never Came, and the Misty Blue Mural. That said, they are all pretty amazing, and we also enjoyed the sculptures too. Their app is very easy to use, and if you select the Follow Me option, it also points out points of interest. For example, as we walked by 130 Westminster Street the app alerted us that were passing The Westminster Arcade, an historic shopping center built in 1828, as the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a great way to enjoy some beautiful artwork in the great outdoors, while getting in a little exercise (a 90 minute walk), check out The Avenue Concept Downtown Self-Guided Public Art Tour in downtown Providence.
