Extremely unprofessional experience at Baaa Bar Dunedin.
They advertised all week that the quiz would still be happening at 8pm after the Melbourne Cup, so one member of our team arrived around 6pm to save seats as usual. By 8pm, at least eight tables of students were seated and ready for the quiz. The Cup was already over, and most of us were just waiting for things to start.
Then, out of nowhere, someone grabbed the mic and announced the quiz was cancelled because “people were having a good time,” followed by cheers from a couple of drunk patrons who’d been there for the Cup and wanted to stay rowdy. The way the announcement was made, everyone assumed it was just a random drunk punter being disruptive. We were shocked to learn that this person was actually the co-owner, Christopher Hart. The other co-owners weren’t present, so the responsibility lies entirely with him.
He then offered to buy a drink for everyone who was there for the quiz, but honestly, that felt more insulting than helpful. We didn’t come for a free drink — we came for the quiz, which was clearly advertised, expected, and prepared for.
I want to make it clear that this wasn’t the staff’s fault at all — they looked just as blindsided and powerless as we were. But cancelling a promoted event at the last minute to please a few rowdy mates is incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful to loyal customers.
If you can’t follow through on what you promote, don’t advertise it. Very disappointing. Do better, Baaa Bar.
