I wish we had taken pictures of any of our meals! Stopped here on a whim and there were no regrets. The only thing that I would change would be making the sausage gravy a little bit thicker, but the flavor was outstanding. Our party got the Big Breakfast BLT, Spicy Cow Burrito and Two and A Half- all of them were outstanding. My partner tried the Shark Bait and said it was great, I had the oat milk latte and it hit the spot. The service was great, the staff were incredibly friendly and the restaurant itself was very spacious and bright. We are already looking forward to returning.

Google
This is absolutely my most favorite restaurant I have ever been to! The staff was amazing and kind, the coffee was perfectly smooth, and the food… the best I have ever had. ESPECIALLY the chicken tender gravy and biscuit meal. I was there about 2 months ago, and ever since I still cannot stop thinking about how tasty it was. Like nothing i’ve ever tried before. 10/10 would most definitely recommend!!!!

Google
Did breakfast here twice and it was great! Granola yogurt fruit bowl is crazy good as are the pancakes and the salmon & egg on toast! Atmosphere and vibe is bright and upbeat, service is friendly and fast and the menus is creative. Food is high quality, good portions and delicious. No doubt that you should go! Coffee is good and chai is fantastic!

Google
We had wonderful experience today! A varied menu difficult to make a choice… so many good meals offered! From a steak salad to grits and shrimp they were all delicious! The service was fantastic! The added bonus was amazing goodies…cinnamon rolls, large variety of cookies and pastries made in house! Reasonable prices! A place to come back to for sure!

Google
First time trying out Back Yard and I definitely will be back. Baked goods, coffee, unique but not scary breakfast options. They were more than happy to accommodate my less adventurous father who wasn’t sure he would like pineapple curd on his pancakes. Staff seemed in a good mood and the place is bright, clean, and just all around worth a visit.

Google
Stopped in for breakfast and then came back again loved it both times. They also had baked goods for sale I picked up a few items to go and wished I had bought more. Also had bloody mary's and mimosas on the menu if you wanted. We had eight in our group and were sat with no problem.

Google
Phenomenal... best breakfast I've had out since I moved to Delaware 10 years ago. I had Which Came First the Chicken or the Egg. The first bite was soooo delicious. We asked if we could try the grits. You never know with grits when you go out. These grits were the best I've had in my life. True Southern grits amazing!!! Atmosphere was relaxed, comfortable, and friendly. Service is excellent, and the coffee is perfect. We will be back.

Google
Food is good but when you go in and get seated and start watching customers that are seated after you start getting their drinks and orders taken while we haven't received our drinks. The waitresses walk right past your table numerous times, it gets irritating. Felt like we were being ignored. Do not know if the management changed or new employees but they seemed like they were lost. Last time we come here.

Thomas C.

Yelp
The atmosphere was cute. The service was friendly and professional. I had the tomato and basil soup which was delicious. I also had the pressed Italian sandwich which was also very tasty. It was served with kettle chips. . I would definitely go back and try other items on the menu

Yelp
Went here for the first time for "brunch" on a Saturday morning. The place is small but cute. The person that greeted us was very nice, we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. It took a few for minutes for our server to come to the table. She was not overly friendly but seemed to be okay. We ordered a Bacon Omelette with potatoes and wheat toast and a BLT breakfast sandwich. Food was out in a reasonable amount of time, brought by someone from the kitchen. The food was good, nothing great but decent. We did have a cinnamon roll and it was absolutely delicious. We never saw our server again, she never checked on us, and I would have liked some more tea and some more jelly. We waited about 2o minutes to get our bill after we were done, our plates neatly put together and sitting on the table and she never came to our table. We went up other her ask for our check and she told us to just pay at the cash register. So, all in all, not a great experience. I saw other waitresses who were attentive to their tables so I think it was just our waitress. I didn't see her around much so maybe she was doing something else, making coffee's or something. I think the fact that she did not want to bring our bill was the worst. With all the good options around I am not sure I will be retuning but it is worth a try to make your opinion.

Yelp
This is my 3rd time visiting this restaurant and each time I enjoyed. The breakfast menu I really enjoyed the best. The service is great every time I've come here. Great ambiance and make sure you get the pastry when you see it, or it may be gone once you finish eating. They are delish.

Yelp
I'm so glad we found this place on a random Google search. They are AMAZING! So glad we had a great dining experience here. Some places in DE really disappoint, this isn't one of them and I can't wait to come back! This place is CUTE! The decor is beautiful, the vibe was just right (we loved the reggae), and the seating is well spaced. Our server was so friendly and just seemed like a really kind person. We're both pretty consistent with what we try and we dove right into ordering. For like $60 we had 5 various non-alcoholic drinks (coffee, tea, sparkling water, soda, etc.), two main meals, one app, and a couple sides. I'm just saying, that's pretty fair pricing to us! My order was Shrimp& Grits, which I try anywhere that has it and I LOVED their take on it. I also got the crab fries, which as a MD native, I was worried about but they were so so good. Even better than the ones at Camden Yards dare I say. My husband got the Tuna steak sandwich and had zero complaints. Overall their food is just delicious! I look forward to coming here more often.

Yelp
When friends suggested this restaurant, a 45 minute drive away, I was not at all convinced this was a necessary trip. I was wrong. Some had the cheese burger soup, which looked fantastic, there wraps, and I opted for the Chicken Caesar salad. I pretty much know just what that should taste like, having eaten it at many restaurants around here for years. This was simply, no hands down, the best ever. Crispy chicken, large shavings of parmesan cheese, great, authentic dressing. Honestly, I'd go here once a week (if it weren't a 45 minute drive!)

Yelp
We've been coming here for a couple of years now...Great local establishment, helpful and they have great muffins and sandwiches. A true gem in Milton. I love the yardbird sandwich and many other dishes. Give them a try; you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
$22 for a burger and fries that had zero taste $2.50 for a canned soda, burger had cheese on it but had no taste, wait staff is pleasant enough but the food was bland and way over priced for what it is granddaughter had the chicken tenders and I have no doubt they came in a bag frozen and were reheated. Felt it was a waste of money for mediocre food.
google avatar

Samuel T.

Yelp
We use to come here all the time for breakfast and the food is still very good. Recently they have increased their prices where an omelette is $20 which for that price we'd rather make our own for cheaper. I understand that things have gotten more expensive and while it is good food I wouldn't go back due to there being no value for the money.

Yelp
My fiance and I were visiting family in Georgetown and stumbled upon The Backyard on Yelp while looking for restaurants in the area. The photos and menu stood out to us, so we decided to stop by before our visit. We arrived on the tail end of the Sunday brunch rush, so there were a few couples ahead and behind us. The front of the house seemed to be a bit disorganized, but I think they were short-staffed because there was no hostess to take people's names down. However, everyone was able to keep track of their spot and we were seated fairly quickly considering the size of the restaurant and the amount of people who were waiting. After going back and forth with what I wanted to order, I chose the garlic shrimp burger (I added caramelized onions too) and fries. It was definitely the right decision. The chorizo/beef combination with the shrimp was so. Good! The garlic aioli could have used more garlic, but I was very happy with my meal. The fries reminded me of boardwalk-style fries. Overall, The Backyard is a cute little restaurant and I would happily return to try more things from their menu!

Yelp
Cute little restaurant with rustic beach vibes. Whenever you walk in there's a coffee bar with a lovely pastry case. My mouth might have been slightly watering as we walked by. Our waitress was friendly and answered any questions that we had about the menu. They had several different options to choose from. Sadly, they were out of the pimento cheese and gauc so we went with the sweet potato fries as our appetizer. The sriracha ketchup had quite the kick to it. For my entree I went with the garlic beef and was pleasantly surprised with how tasty it was. All of the employees seemed friendly and happy to be there. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
A hidden gem Great service, friendly staff. Scrumptious food. Best breakfast. Everything homemade. A must stop

Maryann C.

Yelp
Excellent food great service and crab fries excellent Reuben and the backyard sandwich. Everything is fresh tasty and priced accordingly.

Yelp
The food selection is full of creative original options from starters to burgers and sandwiches. There's something for everyone here but not in the weird they-don't-know-what-they're-doing way. Service is super friendly and attentive. The ambience has a fresh, relaxed vibe. I'm not a dessert person, but to youse guys with a sweet tooth, they make their baked goods and desserts in house and also sell them coffee-shop style if you need a quick pick-me-up. My family comes here every trip to the beach and now go out of our way to lunch here since the highway changes occurred.

Yelp
So here's the thing... the FOOD is good, but after several wonderful visits, we will NEVER return. Today, we experienced the rudest, most petty, obnoxious and tragically bad customer service I've had in any establishment in eons. I could write a 20 paragraph explanation of this travesty, but I haven't the time or patience. In short - The kitchen was unable to make the food as ordered (as described on the menu). We were not informed that ingredients were missing, it was simply delivered to the table with missing ingredients along with our other food. When it was noticed, we received an "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you", and we requested a different item (one that required NO cooking). After 15 minutes waiting for a bowl of granola and some yogurt, we were shocked that this lower priced item was "not charged", but the original higher priced item WAS. Here's the thing - when you deliver a failure to the table, you remove THAT item from the bill, not the one you replaced it with. When we asked about this, we were told "sorry, you ate some of the original". They didn't remove the plate from the table after we complained, so my wife is supposed to sit on her hands while I eat my food before it gets cold and not nibble on a few potatoes or a crust of bread? She never actually ate more than 2 bites of the actual entre. All the staff did when we complained, was argue, and then laugh when we told them we were upset and wouldn't be coming back. At no time were we rude to any member of the staff, barring my last comment out the door to the laughing woman behind the counter, when I told her "UP YOURS". Read the other 1-star reviews, including the one mentioning the flies, because that one is on-point too - we were pestered constantly by them as well. I wonder what would have happened if I'd mentioned THAT to our "server".

Yelp
Oatmeal and a latte!! Best breakfast ever. I don't think I can order anything else. --- but the s'mores cookie. That cookie is AMAZING.

Yelp
Went on a Thursday afternoon just after 1 pm. We didn't have a wait and we're seated quickly. There were a few other diners in the restaurant but it wasn't overly busy. There were a few diners near us that were finished eating and looked to be waiting for their server. We waited a long amount of time for someone to come to our table for our drink order and then waited for our food order to be taken. I ordered the Garlic Beef and shared the fried pickles with my dining companion. The pickles are homemade here, the coating was nice and crisp without being overly breaded. They were very tasty. Served with a Sriracha dipping sauce, a bit too spicy for us. I tried the chicken vegetable soup, which was more like a stew. It had a good taste but it needs more broth and less black pepper. Also potatoes in it were a bit undercooked. The Garlic Beef sandwich came with hand cut fries. The sandwich had a garlic aioli, sliced fried beef and melted provolone cheese served on a nice and crusty ciabatta roll. To me the main ingredient lacking a presence was the garlic. Like others had mentioned there really wasn't very much seasoning on this sandwich. It was kind of bland. The fries were okay, a bit on the hard side. The unsweetened tea was good. The ambience was nice and airy and as a plant person I liked their plant displayed in the windows. The bus person was awesome and should get most of the tip. She brought us refills and came around to make sure we had everything. Server not so much.

Yelp
This is our 2nd time trying this restaurant. The inside is nice and quaint but that food is a different story. We called in our to go order. We ordered the sparrow burger and it was just OK. We also ordered the sausage and egg Angus burger. Both items were repeated back to me, twice. When I picked it up, they said that they don't carry that sausage anymore but they didn't have my phone number. Remember, I just called it in 15 mins ago. I asked if they substituted bacon and she just said no. They actually charged me more for the egg burger with No sausage. Again, it just tasted like, blah! Not much flavor at all and over cooked with an unripe tomato, limp lettuce, and overdone fries. Got all of the French fries at the bottom of a bag, all tiny pieces. They need to put more effort into food quality and flavor. She didn't provide any apology about the burger.

Mary Ellen K.

Yelp
The salad was great. The service was fast and the server was friendly and appropriately attentive. It has a home town, familiar vibe! They also sell homemade jams and pastries.

Yelp
What an adorable restaurant! It is so tastefully decorated and very welcoming. We started with the whipped feta dip, which we decided to add to our sandwiches, so delicious. I had the Garden Box sandwich with their homemade pickle & hummus-highly recommend. Overall a great lunch!

Yelp
The breakfast here is delicious! The spicy cow burrito is my go to! So good, def would recommend

Yelp
Found this gem while searching on Yelp for places to eat for lunch on our mini vacation and glad we came. We were a party of 8 but the maximum is 6 at a table so we sat separately but didn't mind at all. The waitresses were so friendly and helpful. The restaurant had high ceilings and lots of sunlight. The decor was very nice and simple and tables and seats were clean and spaced really well for social distancing. We ordered the following: Fried pickles: husband loved it with the sauce it came with to dip Crab fries: this is a huge appetizer, need to share with 2 or more people Cup of zucchini soup: it was alright, everything was puréed but my sister in law was expecting some chunks Reuben sandwich: so tasty! Just the right amount of fries came with it and the meat in the sandwich wasn't too to salty. Garlic steak sandwich: husband loved this and the ciabatta bread was soft. Flavor was great overall. They have baked goods once you walk in, we grabbed a red velvet, m&m, toffee and sugar cookie. They were all so tasty, not too sweet and it was so soft even after 3 days. Our waitress was on point with refilling our ice teas without us asking. Definitely recommend coming here and can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Delicious find in Milton! Yummy sandwiches and salads and great kids choices. We rent a beach house and we're very happy to find this spot to appease all food interests, including the vegan

Yelp
Cute little spot! Food was really good. The pesto bagel was great. Loved the crispy Parmesan on the bagel. Had the cinnamon oat latte as well that was very good. The staff was very friendly.

Yelp
Over the years I have dined at the backyard and taken others with me. It's always been a delightful experience; five stars for sure. Recently, I brought 2 new people to the backyard for breakfast and everything was A la carte. It cost about $75.00 for breakfast. When 2 of my friends and I east breakfast one a week at Westside in Milford it cost me $10.00 + 3.00 tip so 3 of us may be $39.00. Big price difference!!! Unfortunately, I will choose another place instead of The Backyard.
google avatar

Christine K.

Yelp
Love this place! The food here is delicious and the drinks are so yummy! Talk of the town. Definitely worth trying out!

Yelp
Great breakfast/lunch spot in the small town of Milton. I was told that they may do dinner in the future. I'm a research nerd so i always look up my food options when planning a vacation. I stumbled upon a website that listed the Backyard as one of the best breakfast spots in Delaware. The Backyard happened to be a perfect spot for our journey down to Virginia. I ordered the Black Pearl Omelette which had grilled shrimp, cheddar, green onions, and what they called the black pearl salsa. It was delicious. The eggs were nice and moist and the shrimp and salsa were a great combination. The home fries and coffee were also very good. My wife got the Biscuits & Gravy which she enjoyed. The service was very good and the people running the place were very friendly.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
Finished a real estate transaction and asked for a lunch recommendation. They pointed down the street. We drove around for a while and ended up at the Backyard (the recommendation). We tried three of the sandwiches. I have the honey jalapeno chicken burrito. It was fabulous. Savory, sweet, and just a bit spicy. It makes for a really nice blend of flavors and textures. I asked for it on a bun instead of a wrap and they obliged. It was excellent and for $12 it came with fries. (The fries are also good.) My son had the Trucker which has BBQ pork and mac & cheese. It was also excellent. For $12 it also came with fries. My husband had the garlic beef. It wasn't impressive. Not worth it and rather bland. It was the most expensive of the three at $13 with fries. The ambiance is trendy and airy. We were there for a later lunch and it was still packed. Service was good. Food was good. Ambiance was good. All in all a good experience. I feel like the prices were a bit high, but I'm sure the proximity to the touristy areas bumps the numbers a tad. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I might relocate to Milton. You know just so I can eat at The Backyard more often. We've eaten here twice -- well, let me qualify that. When we arrive we always have our Story with us, a 20 lb-NPR listening-Ragamuffin Shi-Poo-Poo who is partial to bow ties -- once in the summer to eat delicious sandwiches in the car and now winter when because the weather was decent we could go inside while he remained in the car listening to Scriabin. Love the inside vibe. Clean looking with a comfortable sense of place. Awesome staff with tattoo sleeves and superb efficiency. Our winter order arrived toot sweet. I chose from the "Twisted" side of the breakfast menu -- a gorgeous smoked salmon, egg and whipped feta atop grilled rye with a hot London Fog on the side. She chose a wrap from the "Traditions" side which was tortilla filled with scrambled egg, bacon, caramelized onion and goat cheese (the last ingredient not to her taste). Based on summer and winter bites here I can see that The Backyard is fast becoming my second home. And yes, you should know, the property includes a substantial fenced enclosed backyard. What! A little NPR piped in with some speakers and Story would be in heaven too. Just sayin'

Yelp
Tried this place because they were part of the Cape Gazette discount card. Service was horrible! A good 20 minutes after we were service until the server actually approached us. We saw her 4 times during our lunch. First greeting, order taking, one check and then with the bill. There was another girl that basically did all the work of refilling our drinks when she delivered the food, getting us straws and extra napkins, and clearing the table. The bubba's pickles were delicious but the sauce was way too spicy. I had a sandwich with salami, goat cheese, spinach and balsamic on a ciabatta which was good but could have used more cheese. I did like that it wasn't flooded with the balsamic vinegar. The ciabatta was nice and crunchy. It came with fries that were very tasty. A but we'll done which is exactly how I liked it. The atmosphere was nice. Very open. You weren't sitting on top of another table. Modern looking. They have a bar too and a small coffee and bakery area. It was just ok. I wouldn't necessarily go back and the service is an issue. If I was on a lunch break from work I would never have made it back in time.

Yelp
Excellent chicken dishes. Roast beef and dessert were meh, but chicken was divine. As of a 2014 WHYY article, there are over 200 MILLION chickens in Delaware, and "Chickens outnumber residents in Delaware by more than 200-to-1." A bit of an outdated source, but the industry has only grown since then. I mention this because I was surprised and delighted to see organic chicken on the menu, and especially for kids' chicken fingers! The chicken quesadilla entree and the kids' chicken fingers were extremely delicious and high quality! The roast beef sandwich was not so hot, and bland compared to that juicy, flavorful chicken. Handcut fries were good, but I am still doing takeout post-pandemic-shutdown, and the way they packaged the takeout fries made them soggy, so that was a fail. The dessert sounded good, but I can make a better peach upside down cake, and that is not a brag. This was like my home economics cooking class in 7th grade. I'm betting their other desserts are better, and will give them another try. But let me say that despite the bland roast beef, the soggy fries, and the yucky peach cake, I am STILL giving them 5 stars for their chicken dishes. They are just THAT good!!!!

Tom L.

Yelp
Lunch : Trucker Barbecue Sandwich was TERRIBLE, 1 scoop og barbecue in the middle, and the rest macaroni. What a mistake. 1 Can of soda was $ 2.75, no refills. Stay away from this place

Yelp
I took my mom here for her birthday, and it was a disappointment. I ordered the shrimp and grits, because I've had it before at this restaurant years ago. Very disappointing this time around. Very little bacon and grits, and wayyy too much spinach. The "Gouda" grits this time around were just grits with literally a single shaved piece of cheese, not melted. Less shrimp too. And the cost was higher than I remember ($18?) A true definition of shrinkflation, and the quality overall was just average. Good but not great. I've heard that the breakfast items are better. I'd give it a 2 1/2 stars, but yelp won't let me.

Gregory P.

Yelp
If you want to go to a place where the customer is never right, and the music is too loud, this is the place for you. The manager acts like she is in charge and damned be everyone else
google avatar

Yelp
We just enjoyed an un expected good lunch at the Back Yard. Not fancy but very good at a reasonable price in today's market. We believe in supporting our home town busineses and will return in the future. No evening meals offered due to staffing issues. Try it you'll like it. When you see a busy parking lot it is a good indication that the food is good. It was...... Rich Bolton Richs Dog Days

Marybeth A.

Yelp
I would also like to say that one of the reasons I prefer to order a basic breakfast here is because their menu selections include some weird combinations that don't appeal to me. Basic is better when it comes to breakfast, in my opinion.
google avatar

Cynthia J.

Yelp
We have delicious food every time we visit. The atmosphere is unique and the service is stellar.
google avatar

Yelp
Overpriced snd the food is meh... We ate there three times with different friends and all had the same opinion of the place. we won't be going back there ever again.

Yelp
This gem is a lot like the town of Milton itself. Small, friendly, full of many qualities and a few surprises. I remember when it was Speedy Benson's garage. The remodel was well done and functional. Acoustics are important to me, especially the older I get, and The Backyard is just right. Light music in the background and you can enjoy a private conversation at your table. I've tried many items from their very creative menu and haven't found anything I dislike. The prices are fair and the service has always been stellar. This past weekend I ordered the baked oatmeal on a cold, icy morning and it was fantastic. Fresh strawberries and cream on perfectly baked oatmeal. Milton is my place of birth and hometown and I'm so glad The Backyard is also located here.

Yelp
If you like salad you must try the mango chicken salad. The best! Great flavors and so delicious! Don't forget to order some cookies and jam to go. We enjoy breakfast lunch and dinner. Just the best in Milton Delaware. Thuy Dong- October 2021

Yelp
This is a great place to eat. The food is fresh and definitely has that farm to table vibe. Service is friendly and efficient with our server giving some great recommendations. We started out with the hot pepper jelly appetizer which was great. I ordered the Cuban which was grilled perfectly and tasted great. The daily soup was cabbage soup---probably the best tasting soup I've encountered ever! I know I will be craving this in the weeks and months ahead. I do not live in the area, but sure wish I did so I could frequent this wonderful restaurant.....and did I mention the cabbage soup :)

Betsy J.

Yelp
Food is fresh and delicious, service is good. They also have great coffee and a nice selection of baked goods!

Cameron J.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch with some customers and very cute quaint local cafe. Food was very good- I ordered the yardbird which was supposed to be a wrap and it was more of a quesadilla. But oh so yummy. Wish they had more of a normal coffee selection, but good food. Weird hours open. Service was good. Would go back for lunch.

Ginny H.

Yelp
I love the food choices here and the food is always good. I wish they still served dinner too.
google avatar

Charles V.

Yelp
I nice place to stop either into or out of Rehoboth. There are good options on the menu ... and the staff is very friendly. I selected the County Chicken sandwich. The chicken salad was on point, and I also enjoyed the honey mustard, but the sandwich felt like it needed some lettuce (Romaine) that would have given it both a better textural and flavor profile.
google avatar

Arturo A.

Yelp
Very uncomfortable atmosphere, changed my order to go after the server greeted me with "what do you want to eat?" while rolling their eyes and looking at the ceiling. When the order arrived I asked for the check and was told that I had to go to the register to pay, which I thought was odd given every other table was given a check... I did not try the food, given I lost my appetite. Hopefully in the near future this establishment is more open minded, yikes!

Vicky T.

Yelp
Good place for breakfast - nice coffee choices too. Wait staff is friendly. The "to go" bakery choices are very good too. We're "semi-regulars" here and this restaurant has been consistent in its quality. Of note - every single time we go here with our grandkids - the kids menu items always arrive after the adult meals - sometimes a number of minutes later - just surprising the kitchen doesn't recognize this as a "need to improve"! We also wish they would reopen for dinner service again!

Yelp
Love the Backyard. Cute ambiance and the food is delicious! Easy place to meet up with a few friends.

Yelp
Solid breakfast location beyond the hustle and bustle of Rehoboth and Dewey. The coffee is bottomless and free flowing, the service is full of smiles. My friend and I, pallets destroyed from a hard weekend at Dewey ordered The Dude; gravy, potatoes, sausage and eggs served open face on a tortilla (also come with cheese, which I skipped). Hearty and filling, it gave me life for the long drive of shame home. Stars docked for speed coming out of the kitchen (and dishes weren't but), but A-OK for sure, and we'll worth the deflection to avoid beach traffic! Good prices too.
