The Backyard on a sunny Saturday is simply glorious. Live music from 1 to 4 PM I went for the Bay Area All Stars, a large band of 9ish musicians: talent meets fun. The Backyard has no inside, but there is plenty of seats, tables, comfy outdoor furniture to accommodate all sorts of groups (1-a bunch). Kids are welcome in the playground under adult supervision. Pets are also welcome. The Point Molate salad was delicious and well balanced. Kudos to the Cook who made the chicken to perfection! Chicken breast so tender that felt pork belly without the grease.

I went to watch a band perform. I am impressed with the atmosphere. There is a good amount of seating. I didn't order any food. The food I saw looked really good. I recommend this place. And will go back. The place can use better bathrooms thou. They're portable toilets.

Google
Awesome vibe for The Taste of Richmond Restaurant. The food was scrumptious backyard burger, Philly cheese , garlic fries, goat cheese w/tomatoes and balsamic drizzle. Those drinks were on point! Awesome service with a smile!

Google
What a fun and casual find. The place literally has the feel of a backyard, full of picnic tables, trees, cornhole toss, a small performance stage, and even some old worn couches. The food tasted so good. Selections were limited, but plentiful at the same time. Lots of choices of beverages, including alcohol and specialty. Also, the pumpkins were for sale. Permanent porta potties for reatrooms.

Google
Ordered the backyard bratwurst sandwich, and the mustard that it comes with was overpowering. Taste like a mustard sandwich. That's why I gave 3 stars. Trying to get to fancy on a bratwurst never works. But what do I know about taste, I'm from Indiana, and all we need to put on a good bratwurst is raw onions and ketchup, and we are set. Didn't like the pickle onions either. Keeping it simple would have been better for me. And it cost $20.00 with 10 percent tip. I would recommend this place to anyone, but today it wasn't for me. I'll be back to try something different in the near further. So, with that said, I hope everyone will come down here to support this place. Good music friendly people. Thanks.

Google
Looks really great from the street, so we stopped in for a beer. Their specialty is Bay Area canned craft beers, of which there are nearly 50. The one draft – Hazy Little Thing IPA from Sierra Nevada – is fresh & tasty! Comfortable outdoor space with lots of games and room for kids to run around. The food menu looks really good, but the timing wasn't right for us to eat (thus, only 3 stars; I'll update soon). All burgers can be made vegan, and all breakfast options can be made vegetarian. Also, the tartines are vegetarian.

Google
Our first time here and it won’t be our last!! We had the Philly Cheese and enjoyed the seating under the blue sky! Dog friendly and such a great place to bring a group. Wishing these guys all the best!

Google
Was there for an anniversary celebration. The burgers were very good. Atmosphere is outdoors but have shaded areas. Would go back again.

Yelp
It was amazing, the service was very well, the food was amazing! The drinks were fantastic, and the vibes were so chill!

Yelp
Tucked in the industrial section of Cutting Blvd, the backyard is worth a weekend stop. From the gravelled parking lot to the old sofas, live music, and a food trailer on what was once an abandoned lot, I loved this family- and dog-friendly spot. There are even games in the yard. A real surprise was the food. I had the avocado toast it was tasty, I would order it again. When I tasted the beef Philly I was ready to order one to go, but they had sold out. The rest of my friends had burgers, the vegetarian had fries, even the dog had a pup patty, and everyone enjoyed the food The music was almost too loud; however, because the stage is outside, it was not too uncomfortable. We heard two different bands. The loud music did make it hard to have a conversation. A word of warning that does not affect my rating: bees and yellow jackets are everywhere. There is nothing that the Backyard can do to keep these pests out of the yard.

Yelp
This was my very first visit, after being a MB resident for over 2 decades. I loved the vibe, the usage of the area is nice, and furniture is all outdoor chilling patio furniture. Meal was tasty, Bay Area prices, crunchy tots Thing is--- when my brother found this disgusting long hair that he had to literally remove from the bread and protein (they did refund him the item), I then looked through the rest of his burger as he went up to complain. Upon departing after lunch, a male actually implied that WE were the ones who planted it. We were both stunned and in dismay from the interaction, and I now am left to really deliberate whether I will return. I can't believe that he said no one on his staff had that kind of hair. Already disgusting enough to have to pull loose the long hair, and it made me mildly nauseous! PS I do love the vegan option, the sale of spirits and beer, and the presence of family games that can be played on the premises.

Yelp
Can't believe this is my first time. What an awesome community spot! Here for harvest festival and it's just great vibes.

Yelp
Food was good. Burger was smashed burger. But too oily. I only realized that afterwards, when my tummy hurt. Service was awesome. Ordered at window and picked up at another. The ambience and space is awesome. I love the set up and of course the guava beer! I did not like the garlic fries, it was too much parmesan and too little garlic.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome little spot tucked away from the ghetto-ish-ness of Richmond. Fully fenced around, live music on a Sunday the girl was good. The burgers are good, nice and flavorful. The French fries were crispy (big plus). Maybe a tiny pricey (20 bucks for a double burger) but it was a good time. the service was super quick got our food within minutes. We brought our dogs. Lots of people bring their kids to run around
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
This place is great to bring your dogs and kids after a hike. There was a playground area for kids to play on and all seating is outdoors so you can hang out with your dogs. They also had a dj playing when I came on a Sunday. Burgers were very filling and tasty. Beers available but it was only canned options. Would love to come back and try other food options.

Yelp
This place is a gem! The atmosphere is cool, it is LGBTQ+ friendly and they have a lot of cool events. We happened to be there when they had karaoke and a DJ. We tried the backyard burger and fries. This was all so fresh and juicy. I like that they have a variety of drink options and you can sit outside and enjoy the cool atmosphere. They have plenty of seating and you can bring your family and pets. The burger was flavorful and hit the spot. I love a good burger. I'd come here again for sure!
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
You know, I got some fries here and forgot to take a pic. But I came here cause it's outdoor, dog and kid friendly and has mimosa carafes. Definitely enjoyed the peach mimosa! It's a chill vibe and I'm always stoked to bring my dog out for drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute little hidden gem in Richmond. I was surprised how big the place is and how it actually feels like a backyard party. The food was actually really good as well a little pricey but tasty. The staff was very friendly as well.

Yelp
I usually am never in this area, but we decided to come here after biking. I've always heard great things about this place and since it was fairly nice out on a winter day, we decided to enjoy the outdoors. This is a very family-friendly environment, which I've noticed right off the bat when I saw other families and kids there. The area itself seems a little sketch, but right when we walked inside, we felt the warm welcome. It was karaoke going on during the time we went, so it seemed like there were a lot of regulars, and there were kids and adults singing, which was very cute. There are a lot of games to keep the little ones occupied while the adults enjoy a beverage. We got some beers and mimosas to start off with. For food, we got the Backyard Burger, The Point Molate Salad, Hamburger and wild fries. All of the food was pretty tasty and the staff was great. The karaoke host was especially welcoming. I look forward to gathering all my friends and kids and coming back for a day out on a sunny day. It is a great place to connect with family and friends while enjoying great food and a cold beverage.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! Cute outdoor area and perfect when it's a hot summer day. Richmond can get cold so definitely bring a jacket. The parking lot is on dirt/rocky area. Their bathrooms are situated just outside, except not a porta-potty. The vibe is cozy. Nice background music, a little stage, and some games set up for anyone to play. They serve beer and burgers mostly. The service is self-serve and you pick up the food once the pager goes off. The food is delicious! Probably one of the best burgers I've had. They have hanging lights and things so I bet at night it's pretty too. We got too cold since we didn't bring jackets so didn't stay to see the sun go down. This is definitely on my list to return too. I hope to come back when they have live music too.
google avatar

Marisol C.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful local spot. The food is wonderful and the outdoor space is lovely. There is frequently live music and the garden is great. Great gluten free options! 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Granville S.

Yelp
It's a pretty dirty environment. The environment can be very cold since most of it is outside. I have to admit it's truthful advertisement. It's like that being in the backyard.
google avatar

Katrina D.

Yelp
This place is less than a mile from my job so it is my go-to when I'm craving a burger. The Backyard burger is always consistently delicious, and I've ordered it plenty of times! Their fries always have a perfect crisp to it, so good that I usually finish half before I even drive off. The ladies who work there are always sweet and kind. Today I learned the name of one of the employees who is always on top of everything! Her name is Nabi and she definitely pays attention to detail! She remembers just how I like my burger and always brings the best energy. There's tons of outdoor seating and the place has many different zones to hang out in, so it never feels too crowded. They host events here sometimes and I try to come out and support when I can. Good times, good vibes!
google avatar

Yelp
Great burgers, live music, and sweet vibes! Pretty chill spot. They allow dogs which is sweet, also very quick service.

Yelp
Don't waste your time for the Easter egg hunt, they have no idea how to run an event like this. At most they can accommodate like 20 kids, but they advertise it like they can support 100 or more so naturally you have that many people showing up. When we went in 2025, they had so many people that they didn't do the egg hunt they just give a couple of adults giant bags and then kids went up to them to ask for eggs. Supposedly they had 500 eggs and Idk who got all the eggs because I saw at least half the kids walking out with ZERO eggs in their baskets. It was just plain chaos. I mean wow talk about a massive disappointment for the kids! Save yourself the trouble and just plan on something else, I mean seriously you can't even get lunch on that day because it's so packed there is no where to sit and the line is 50 people long.
google avatar

Lou B.

Yelp
I love this place! Delicious food, excellent beer selection, and fun atmosphere. Also very kid-friendly if you're looking for a place to have a gathering that's a mix of adults and children.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
We just had to come back the very next day and got the same thing again! Food is so good once again my favorite is chicken parm sando! Coming back to get this over and over again. I love the burgers too, ended up getting a burger since my fiancé didn't want to share. Service is always pleasant with a smile and everyone there is kind and helpful. The setting of the place was perfecto that aligns with the food, love how everything is cleaned and organized.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
Definitely a great hidden gem!! Food was delicious and filling, seating was plenty, service was friendly and quick, and there's even some games to play outdoors. Parking lot probably fills up as the night goes on but it's convenient. Had so much fun with my friend here. We talked for hours the ambiance overall was so chill and fun. Burger was so good and I couldn't even finish I was so full. Definitely can't wait til they open back up again! Assuming they're waiting for better weather, I would.

Ruthy E.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Ambiance is very enjoyable. We went during a time there were pumpkins available to pick and I got two of them. Food and service was great. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Sweet spot. Hidden gem? A simple thing in life? Some o the best burger I've had in quite a while, good enough that I'd travel back the 10 miles or so just for this. I saw the signs about entertainment and night life and folks seem to like that in this space as well, so even more of a reason to return. Good beer, super friendly staff, comfortable outside setting with umbrellas and sheds to shade you and keep you dry when winter arrives. Everybody was having a good time. Easy on easy off 580 along Cutting so do give these good people a try next time you're driving by.
google avatar

Jacqueline F.

Yelp
Well the food was good, but the porta potty situation was nuts. Actually, it was gross. Not bay to breakers gross but still gross nonetheless. I had a drink and enjoyed it, and they had a burger on gluten free bread and it was filling. The fries were okay. But, I can't get over the that bathroom situation and the fact that the people working there use the same one. So there were some bathrooms and then a place to wash hands which was inadequate. It's dog friendly which isn't my thing because I'm not a dog person. They have breakfast, but I'm not sure that I'd want to go there. The food is good, very good if you aren't squeamish about the lack of cleanliness.
google avatar

Azteca L.

Yelp
Wow after not getting any service at assemble or up & down, we decided to come to the backyard in which it did not disappoint. Cynthia was welcoming and let us know what was popular n what she recommendations. Food is legit. Live music on point.
google avatar

Yelp
Bikers along the richmond corridor of the bay trail have a new spot to drop in to get some grub, hear live music, have a beer or wine. Looks more like The start of a hippie township like Christina in Copenhagen, with a collection of trailers, tents, miss match chairs, funky art, plants and wooden picnic tables. But frankly ithas a very cool vibe inside the compound. Some areas for sun bathers some with shade, various games, ping pong bocce ball etc scattered strategically around the compound. Apparently the owners frequently shopped at the hardware store next door, asked about the lot and poof! Some elbow grease, creativity and passion and you have the backyard ! With all the rain this past winter, we were worried it wouldn't survive. Anavives tables fun funky outdoor weekend enclave now closed, what's a biker on the bay trail to do??? Well now that summer is here, the rain gone as well as June gloom, it's a glorious day to hang outside, Liston to samba , drink a PBR have a gourmet burger and chill with a very diverse and eclectic crowd. You order at one stall, pick up at another. The line moves pretty quick and they use buzzers to inform you your order is ready. The burger was juicy and super tasty. I've gotta try the steak Sami next!

Yelp
There are lot of good things to be said about this place. The location is tucked in on Cutting on the way to Point Richmond. Very spacious outdoor area with lots of seating and activities (ie. bocce, big connect 4). Got here on a good sunny day. Ordered the mimosa carafe, avocado toast, and fries. Avocado toast was a 10/10 for me. I really liked the honey on top and it was on top of some fresh Acme bread. Surprisingly pretty filling along with the fries. My friend and I shared some mimosas which were refreshing and was enough to give us around 2-ish cups each. Atmosphere is really laid back and great to bring kids and pets. No indoor bathrooms but there some porta potties close to their parking lot. I hate porta potties but theirs was probably the cleanest one I have ever used and smelled pretty good? (Never thought I'd say that). Only downside might be that depending on the weather, somebody like myself might skip the spot. They also close pretty early so this is something you should plan for brunch, lunch or a wind down after your 9-5. Love seeing new spaces like this pop up in the Richmond area.

jeffrey r.

Yelp
Nice place to hang out, very casual for Saturday dining, outside only. Food hit the spot. Recommend marina bay double burger and fries combo. We split this for two adults. Fries were no big deal, might try basalmic salad next time. Burger had avocado bacon goat cheese lettuce tomatoe. Messy, so not for fancy outfits. Told live music until 4 pm, we missed it this time. Pickup window, so zero table service. Staff was friendly. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun space and so glad places like this are popping up in Richmond! Friendly comfy spot. Service ok. Food is nothing to write about. Needs to take some notes from Jonny Boi. Fries seem to be from frozen. . Will try again and update if I find something especially good because I love to support places like this when I can.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
I have to say, I really love this place! The food is amazing and they have a great selection of local beer. My husband and I decided to split the Philly steak sandwich and it was absolutely massive - I'm glad we shared! We also got the garlic fries which were perfectly crispy and had just the right amount of garlic. When my husband went to get another round of drinks, he asked the lady behind the counter to surprise me and she picked out the perfect fruit sour beer. We went on a Sunday afternoon, and there was live music, which made the whole experience even better. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes. Oh, and for any vegans out there, they have some really tasty options on the menu too!
google avatar

Sidney S.

Yelp
Is it not in human nature sometimes, based on the facts that you now know, to reconsider -- Frans Timmermans Upgrading to 5 stars. The Philly cheesesteak sandwich is the best one in the East Bay, and one of the best things I've eaten all year. If they allow corkage, I might even give them 6 stars ;-)
google avatar

Maya D.

Yelp
Unfortunately after going and enjoying this place several times previously, I had a super frustrating experience here yesterday that'll probably keep me away for a good while. It was pretty crowded and no more seats in the shade, so we decided to make an order to go. I was ok to wait a bit because I knows it was busy, but got super annoyed once I had been waiting an entire hour and saw multiple people who'd ordered about 20 mins ago get their food (same burgers and fries I'd ordered). I went to check on the food and the person apologized saying she'd accidentally just given my food to someone else. Even the guy she'd handed it to had ordered maybe 30 mins after me. And his buzzer hasn't gone off so no reason to hand it to him. There was no good explanation and waiting an hour for 2 burgers and fries to go is ridiculous. I'm also 7 months pregnant, and really didn't appreciate having to unexpectedly wait around in the sun for that amount of time.
google avatar

Jack V.

Yelp
We arrived with 5 adults and 2 dogs. Outdoors was windy but pleasant in the sun. Staff were nice. My cheeseburger order came with fries and I always attempt to get them *specifically* 'extra, extra, extra crisp...AND THEY WERE! Just like I ordered them, which btw seldom happens! Golden brown and crisp and I ate all of them. I was so happy I insisted on tipping the cook $5. I used to get similar from Lucas in Oakland until their greedy landlord killed them off. Thanks to Backyard for a treat!
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
It felt like just a lazy Saturday, chilling at The Backyard w/ friends and family. Except for the fact that my backyard never looks this nice, the burgers never taste so good and I've never had live music. This place is the perfect venue for outdoor spring or summertime fun. Not too mention the staff is super friendly and makes you feel right at home. Loved the Santa Fe burger that comes with thousand island, cheddar or provolone, lettuce, tomatoes and onions on an Acme Bread bun. There's plenty thirsty beverages to water down your burger w/ from local wine, brews, seltzers and sodas. Also appreciate how the venue has some cool outdoor games like a large Connect Four set, cornhole, ping pong, badminton and table soccer.
google avatar

Miriam L.

Yelp
From the outside, and the neighborhood, it might not look like much, but inside there's ample parking, a lovely "backyard" with lots of tables in different kinds of combinations for all kind of groups and a small but mighty menu. There's also love music, good drinks, and just a very nice vibe. Bathrooms are porta potties, but the nicer kind. Staff seem friendly, but there is no table service.

Selina O.

Yelp
Such a fun place for the dogs! The backyard is our go to place! The vibes and food are top tier. The drinks are the extra cherry on top. I loved the mimosa pomegranate. Last I came, I had the Philly cheese steak, I loved the flavor and it was super big! Definitely great to share with a special someone/family. This time around, I had the new cheese fries. Caramelized onions were such a great surprise! Will definitely order again! Upon arrival, Emmett greeted us with blankets and a heater! It was truly great to see this staff really care and treat the customers right! Will be coming back, as always!
google avatar

Nelson S.

Yelp
The whole atmosphere is great for family or even friends . As I sat there sun bathing for my order to be ready, I realized it would be a good place for a social event. I went on a Sunday around lunch time , so it was pretty busy. The food options are plentiful , and I must say the taste is immaculate. It is one of the best Philly cheese steaks I've had in awhile. They are not shy on the portions. The only downside was the wait for the food. Waited about 40 minutes , but regardless, it was great. Will be returning with friends and family.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
The Backyard is a chill little outdoor spot fairly close to Point Richmond. My mom and I finally had the chance to try it the other day an had an enjoyable meal :)! What we had: Philly Cheese Steak Side of fries We split the Philly Cheesesteak without the peppers. Asked for extra onions in place of the peppers (but it could have used a bit more). The flavor of the cheesesteak was yummy!! We want to go back to try the burger and breakfast! They have live music most Sundays And games to play (cornhole, foosball, and more) Pro tip- Turn onto third from cutting and park in the lot!

Yelp
Richmond is such a hodgepodge of a suburb that it's hard to figure out where to go to eat beyond all the tasty taquerias on 23rd Street. One of the last places I would've considered is the long industrial stretch of Cutting Blvd between Marina Way and Point Richmond. However, owner Emmet Kauffman had an idea to open a family-friendly gathering place on an open lot here. Jamie W. and I were just coming out of the Space Explorers virtual reality exhibit at the Craneway Pavilion when we were feeling peckish from all that faux-gravity-free travel. I noticed this spot on the Yelp app, so we drove to the big gravel lot behind a hardware store. We saw the two trailer units set up and then the open area that looked like a suburban yard replete with patio tables and chairs and a variety of yard games. Though he has aspirations to replicate a Barcelona tapas bar, the menu was mostly straightforward when we showed up with the charcuterie plate the fanciest item. Jamie ordered the $11 BLT as he was having a craving for something traditional, and he wasn't disappointed as they served a liberal slathering of mayo on Acme bread (photo: https://bit.ly/3VKnKJ7). I thought I should give their Backyard Burger a try and went for the $12 Single. It included cheese, pickled onions, and their own special sauce (photo: https://bit.ly/3HhwAK5). Maybe because I rarely have burgers I thought it was pretty good, just not transcendental. We had no complaints about the $3.50 Regular Fries because there were plenty of them for the both of us (photo: https://bit.ly/3UXPid3). To alleviate our calorific intake, we also ordered the $4 Fruit Salad (photo: https://bit.ly/3iQ3wze). A good, casual meal with a lot of promise. Can't wait until it looks more like the Ramblas. FOOD - 4 stars...good all-American fare with room for more global items AMBIANCE - 4 stars...fine on a sunny day, especially for families with restless young kids SERVICE - 4 stars...they seemed grateful to have the business TOTAL - 4 stars...if you enjoy hangin' in the backyard RELATED - Exploring Richmond? Yelp
Burgers were so good! Very juicy and full of flavor! Honestly the burgers are absolutely ambiance was great too! Can get loud with the live bands that play in the weekend but that's part of the fun!

Yelp
Looked for a place to host 15/20 people on short notice for my wife's birthday. First place i emailed was the backyard. Welcoming my group with open arms they responded right away. Giving an option we chose the blue lounge area. Had plenty of sunshade and a nice view of the whole area. They had live Reggae so it was definitely a vibe.... Food was probably an 11 out of 10... with the extra point being how fast it comes out, especially with the crowd they had. All in all one review doesn't good justice on how much of a gem this place is... we ended up staying for 5 plus hours and we'll most likely be back real soon.

Yelp
Found this place on a whim and I'm so glad that I did. It's a small, hidden gem in Richmond that reminded me of a cozy backyard. There's plenty of open seating and even a tv in the patio area to watch sports. I initially went for the breakfast sandwich but arrived a little after one and was told breakfast was over. But upon asking the cook, they told me yes it wasn't too busy so they'd make my sandwich. I ordered a bacon sandwich on a croissant and added avocado.. it was delicious!! There's a small stage set up and there was a nice band playing top 40s. Cool atmosphere and I love stumbling across chill places like this. Check it out!

Yelp
Awesome place to chill out on a Sunday. Dog friendly, everyone is happy in the courtyard, burger and fries are outstanding. Backyard Burger, local brew. Damn nice.

Yelp
Looking to escape the Sacramento heat, my husband and I and our dogs came down to The Backyard to meet a friend on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We loved all of the options for beers, and the fact that they serve food as well. They are dog friendly, and they provide plenty of outdoor games and activities. There were seating options with sun and shade. This place really had it all! I tried two of their sour beers, both of which were delicious. My husband opted for some of their darker options. For a bite to eat, I ended up trying their Philly cheesesteak while my husband got a burger. This place has a little bit of something for everyone.

Yelp
What a cute neighborhood hangout! There was live music when we went and it's a perfect place on a sunny day to sit and enjoy the weather and ambiance! There are nice comfy seating and great food from the food truck. We got the toasts and the Philly cheesesteaks and everything was great. They also serve beer, wine and a variety of non alcoholic beverages as well. Highly recommend to come check this place out!

Yelp
LOVE THE BACKYARD! It's our favorite place. Delicious beers, yummy food, perfect atmosphere. My partner and I just celebrated our engagement there and the Backyard team was so helpful in making our day special!

Yelp
Super cool spot. The burgers were super tasty. The acme bread and bun that they have here elevate the food. The margherita tartine really blew me away. I wasn't expecting it to be as delicious as it was. The goat cheese was super creamy, but the tomatoes and balsamic blew me away. They have so many options for beverages, and we almost opted for the mimosas, but since we were only making a quick stop, we opted for some ginger beer, Mexican coke and apple juice for the kids. Definitely need to come back here to just lounge and enjoy the spot. They had live music, super fun r&b throwbacks. Jazzy versions of Cisco's thong song had us vibing and laughing at the same time. They spelled out some of the lyrics to disguise some of the song for the kiddos. This place has such a great atmosphere. Can't wait to come back and bring friends / coworkers.

Yelp
What a wonderfully unexpected surprise in Point Richmond! We are back in the boatyard at KKMI and we're so glad to find a new option for outdoor dining. The Backyard sits behind Whale Point Ace Hardware, and is a little oasis in this mostly industrial area. One little food truck for ordering food and drinks, and another for preparing and serving food flank the entrance to a fun open space with fake grass, tables and stools, and a pergola for shade and/or shelter. There are outdoor games for kids, and the place is definitely dog friendly. The burgers are top notch, as was the chicken Philly. Their fries are generous portions. They carry a pretty good variety of beers, including NA options like Athletic IPA. We will definitely be back.
