The Bad Apple

We stopped in to eat at The Bad Apple for dinner on a Saturday night and greatly enjoyed our experience! We were able to find a table and enjoy delicious food while many football games were on the TVs in the restaurant. There were many tables of friends enjoying drinks together that made the atmosphere feel extremely welcoming. My Southern Daddy burger was cooked to perfection with the amazing sweet and spicy dandy sauce. The fries and homemade sauce were delicious too! If you are looking for a sports bar with great food and atmosphere, The Bad Apple is the place to be!

I want to preface this review by saying the food was really good. The menu is about 40% burgers and a mix of everything else. I had the Jake & Elwood and it was good. I added chipotle seasoning to the fries with a side of ranch. Their ranch is more of an aioli and I presume both that and the ketchup are made in-house. The biggest disappointment was the service. Everything was great until we got one of the two appetizers we ordered. After the salmon was dropped off, we didn't see our server until the very end of the meal. The bartender brought our food. (I think our server and bartender were the only two people working the front of house). We could see our server (Kwesie) texting in between things and the place wasn't crazy busy, but when he finally came over, I said, "Please make sure we don't get charged for the pickled veggies because we never got them." Instead of, "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry..." or something like that, he just kind of nodded and took my card. I reluctantly tipped 10%. I tip no less than 25% for good service and will tip as much as 40% for outstanding service so I felt bad at only 10%. But then I saw a 5% "Service Charge" and that kind of pushed me over the edge. Just charge more for your food--don't camouflage it into the check. Between the poor service and 5% surcharge, there are many more places to choose from that have equally as good food. Giving three stars instead of one or two because it's hard to fault them for a bad server. One star deduct for that and one star for the 5% surcharge I think is fair and then we just won't go back.

Nice place, the atmosphere was great for it to have just opened. Staff friendly. Amazed by the sauces they make in-house, even the ketchup. Best thing i ate were there, honey garlic wings. Everyone in our party spoke highly of them. Also the taco was really good.

It was my first time in Bad Apple. Visiting the area and I was so stunned by the nasty and rude experience I had. I will start by saying I appreciated the waiter who helped me afterwards, he was so sweet. I was waiting on a take out order initially. I was simply trying to ask the bartender for a glass of water. As a bartender myself I know how to treat everyone with respect. I have a very soft voice so I didn’t expect to be heard over loud music and patrons. I said “excuse me” to try and get the attention of the bartender. Again I don’t think I could be heard so I said it again twice. He then snaps at me and says “that’s not how you call a bartender I’m clearly having a conversation with someone.” I saw him casually having a conversation with another patron but he wasn’t taking an order just standing and conversing. I only wanted to be acknowledged as I’m also a paying customer. If he would’ve said “give me a second” or even a head nod to signal me to wait, I would’ve completely understood. I wasn’t trying to rush him or interrupt his important conversation but to let him be aware of me also waiting at the bar. I didn’t get his name but he’s tall and bald. He then passive aggressively walks up to me asking what did I want. I simply walked away because it was embarrassing as the others at the bar snickered and giggled. He turned away and went back to chatting. Which is surprising as busy as the bar was, his priority is talking and yelling at out of towners.

Happy to see something really cool finally going into this space, it's a huge spot and they really pay homage to the history of the area which is really nice. We didn't order a burger, dumb I know, but will come back soon for brunch to try different ones and I'll update this review. But the cheese curds were amazing and they have a ton of different options for old fashioneds and we enjoyed everyone we had. Come by for date night or as a huge group as they have tons of larger tables outside on the patio or inside. I think this place is going to do really well once people know it's open.

This is a beautiful new gastropub with one of Chicago’s best outdoor spaces. If you’re looking for a beer and a burger you won’t do much better than this spot. The beer selection is huge with 50 beers on tap and the burger is top notch! Here’s what we ordered: 1)Everything wings.. tasty buffalo flavor with celery and blue cheese blended into the sauce. 2) Chicken, bacon, ranch poutine… they have four different types.. this one was decadent… could barely put my fork down. 3) Burgers… we ordered the Thunderdome and the Jake n Elwood both were juicy and flavorful… we have no problem calling this burger spot a top ten. Service was fast and friendly. It’s obvious this crew knows how to run a restaurant. Highly recommend!

This used to be a place I really cared about. I worked in this location for 10+ years when it was John Barleycorn, and because of the memories and industry background, I’ve always had a soft spot for this location of the bad apple on Belden & Lincoln. Unfortunately, today’s visit completely changed how I feel. From the moment we were sat, our server, Jamie, was extremely rude. The restaurant was almost empty, yet we were constantly bumped into, rushed, and had our food taken away before we were finished by Jamie. The whole interaction felt passive-aggressive and very uncomfortable. When we received our bill, we still tipped the standard 20% on our card, which should be documented in their system. After closing out, the server came back to our table and pressured us for more money in cash, asking for an additional tip. That was incredibly inappropriate and made us feel harassed. This was a really upsetting experience, especially because this place used to mean something to me. Sadly, I will not be returning. Very disappointed.

Lovely addition to the neighborhood expanding from another location! The (dog friendly) patio is spacious and cute with trees & nestled between buildings, with TVs which would make it great for game days! Huge beer selection including seasonal beers, and lots of burger options - we had 2 (patty melt & chili palmer) and both were great. The owner Kevin came by to say hi and was so grateful and welcoming! Will definitely be coming by more & will recommend this to many people!

Looking for beer and a burger. Landed here. Beer selection is top notch. Had old Rasputin on draft and delirium tremens as well. Never see these on tap. Wagyu smash burger was fantastic. My new beer spot. Can't wait for patio weather. Huge outdoor beer garden.

Amazing burgers at Bad Apple! Really great creative options to choose from and everything is made perfectly! The staff here was really great and we also really liked the music they were playing while we ate. This is a true Chicago gem go support this great establishment? Such a fun space! We went back in October after the marathon + this was the perfect spot for a larger celebration. I loved the outdoor space - great vibes and plenty of tvs for football! I don't love burgers or beer, so admittedly, I am not the target audience here, but still really enjoyed the BBQ salad! The fish tacos were good, but a bit spicy. Service was a little slow/there was a bit of confusion on who ordered what, but there were a couple bigger groups on the patio so such is life.

Came here around 11:30 on a Sunday with a party of 12 and it was empty. Food was solid and service was quick. Coffee - standard and free refills Bad Apple salad - pretty solid with plenty of apple. Sriracha dressing was interesting and we got it on the side Thunderdome - onion rings were tasty. I think the burger could have used an acid or veg to cut through all the meat

I would give a 3.5 but can't round up to 4 based on the burgs. I will start with the positive vibes though, the patio is huge, has good TVs and good vibes. Staff was friendly, and its dog friendly. We started with honey sriracha wings on the happy hour menu. They were tasty! Solid. I ordered the fig burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was alright but under seasoned or salted. Any bite without goat cheese and fig was very bland. Bun was good and cooked fine. SPF were very tasty. My husband got something with spicy mayo which I'm forgetting the name of. His patty was also under seasoned and he agreed without all the topping would be very subpar. His fries were good too. Overall, we agreed - vibes good, wings good, fries good. Neither of us would get the same burger next time, would maybe try the Waygu smash but otherwise wouldn't come FOR the burgs.

Staff is great, service is friendly and attentive. Food is reasonably priced and pretty tasty. Can get quite loud on gameday. No reservation system available online but you can call if you want to reserve a spot. My saddness is that there is an upcharge to season the fries and I couldn't really taste much more than salt (I was really looking foward to truffle goodness).

The crispy soy garlic wings were super yummy! Crispy with a nice tangy sauce. My boyfriend got the 'just beyond the thunderdome' burger and enjoyed it! Comes with huge crispy onion rings on top. Fun place with a good atmosphere and friendly workers!

Love this place! Amazing service and friendly staff. Really great bar food and the BEST Bloody Mary I've ever had. Get it with the pickle vodka. It's life changing.

Okay!! My only regret is not coming in here sooner.. I have been to the Bad Apple's first location, but it had been many years because it's a little bit further than where I live. When I saw the sign pop-up in the old John Barleycorn, I was ecstatic. I had my parents in town a couple weekends ago and after a long day of painting and moving, we popped into the bad apple and immediately got a seat on the patio. First off... The patio is INSANE! Probably the biggest in this area so I imagine there is no problem grabbing an outside table even on a really nice summer weekend. To start we got the pickled plate, which was really good, but definitely expected some pickles on there at least. Beers were great and all of our entrées were outstanding. I ordered the pulled pork tacos, which came with crispy Chicharron on top and red onions. I'm not kidding weeks later my mouth is watering writing this review. Will be back for brunch and more sitting on that patio before it gets too cold :)

This is a cute patio seating restaurant. They have sport games playing on the TVs and the patio is very lively, great to sit and eat outside in good weather. The menu has a wide variety of food for everyone to choose from. The pickled platter was definitely a great surprise to find and try. Some of the food was a bit bland but would love to come back and try more off their wide menu to see if there are some hidden stars on there

I've been here for three college football games and we were taken care of by the manager, Kevin, and our servers so well. Great atmosphere and great service. Would definitely recommend! The appetizers were also great

I love this restaurant!! It is run by a father and son duo! They have amazing food and drinks with so much diversity in the menu. the service they provide will make you feel like family and the atmosphere is to die for!

Choose Bad Apple in Lincoln Park as we are fans of the North location. We came on an early Saturday evening. My husband was still hungry after a late lunch. This location is new within the last 6 months. Will be a solid bar contribution to this area. We sat at the bar to be near the big TV and chat with the bartender. On this occasion my husband ordered the old fashion. He was impressed with his cocktail. The prices here are very reasonable for Lincoln Park. For food my husband ordered a burger on a pretzel bun. He previously had this same burger at the other location and it didn't disappoint. The burger was packed with onions rings, burger, brisket, pretzel bun and more. It was a flavor packed burger and the French fries were delicious and fresh. Overall we enjoyed the food and drinks. Extensive draft menu here. We tried a few beers and settled on the Porter and the Cider. Will be back as they have the Ghost Tequila and would like a spicy margarita made here. Gave it 4.5 out of 5 as the bartender forgot to put in my dessert. However this could easily be a 5 star experience.

This has become one of our favorite spots in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago. The owner (Kevin) is very involved and works hard to keep everything of high quality. The food is good and service is very attentive and well trained. All ages feel comfortable in this neighborhood bar. Local Indiana Hoosier fans love this place too.

Pretty good first night out to dinner in Chicago. Excited to Yelp all summer long! Here's what we ordered: Cheese curds: highlight of the meal. everyone agreed. The Bad Apple Burger: the burger was excellent, lots of flavor. Could've gone without the fries - a little too soft and bland for my liking. Ranch was great, ketchup was not. The salads that were ordered were great portions (and will hopefully make for good leftovers). The pork tacos were spicy but good. All good thoughts from the rest of the table. Portion sizes are not for the weak. HUGE beer menu and some yummy old fashions as well. I had a spirit-forward gin cocktail that had lots of juniper notes. Just how I like it. A super cool space. I recommend eating outside on the patio if the weather permits! Thanks to Meredith, Andrew, and the rest of the Bad Apple crew for great service.

Was really excited to try it once it opened and it lived up to my expectations. In some ways, it reminds me of Kumas in the creativity of the burger menu but also in the feel of the place (if you swap sports for heavy metal, which yes.) I've gotten a couple burgers there by now and they were all cooked exactly as I ordered and all full of flavors. Of course, some of the combinations of flavors were better than others. For instance, the fig and goat cheese one was tasty but just too much fig so wouldn't necessarily get it again. The Matterhorn has raclette cheese poured over the burger and was super unique. So far, I think my favorite has to either be though the French Onion Patty Melt which adds some gruyere cheese and a bit of au jus to a patty melt which takes something great and makes it even better. I also liked the chili gouda one. The fries are great too and ability to add tons of seasoning for an extra dollar is awesome. Great and diverse beer menu to boot if you're eating on property. Would recommend doing so too because there's a cool patio out back. Can't wait to go back/order delivery again

What a Chicago place to be.... This was our second visit...and it turned out to be at the other location... so now I have been to both... key orders were available at both... though the locations are different from eachother. Sunday night... staff was attentive and helped us make good choices from the menu... overriding our doubts... bacons and bourbons were good appetizer selections.... Burger choices were still plentiful and cooked to order... poutine still also plentiful though we didn't order any this time... fries were tasty. Overall still a 5/5 even though location #2 was very different from #1. Great experience at both!

I've been to the original location in Lincoln Square so I was excited to check out their newest location in Lincoln Park. I came here on a Friday night for dinner with some friends. It was fairly easy to get a table inside. Service was great and attentive from the get go. They have great beer list full of beers you normally don't see. I had the Parisian Patty Melt. I enjoyed it, but wish that it would have been served at a hotter temperature. I also didn't like the house made ketchup. It was missing the salt that normal ketchup has. I will need to come back to try the other burgers. The others in my party had the nada burger, bad apple burger, and the Matterhorn. Everybody enjoyed their food.

Came back to try the burgers and they lived up to the hype. Had the Southern Dandy - It was exceptional. The grilled onions were excellent and the beef perfectly cooked to medium. A shoutout to the bartenders who were super friendly and attentive. Made great cider recommendations.

Well, this new location of The Bad Apple has been open for two weeks and I've already been twice, sooo. Yeah. That about sums it up. I'm sold on the drink menu. I don't drink beer but I love cider, and it's hard to find places with more than 1 or 2 cider options. Bad Apple has such good variety of ciders and beers! And the patio feels like a beer garden with all the tree coverage, so basically this is a perfect place to drink all day. The food prices are so refreshingly NORMAL!! It seems like every new restaurant nowadays just adds $4 to the price of the restaurants around it. So seeing salads WITH MEAT for $17 and burgers under $20 is amazing. I don't eat beef so I've had the buffalo cauliflower wrap and the fish & chips. The wraps come in a thick warm pita, not just a tortilla, which is sooo yummy. And the fish & chips were DELISH, and so large that I got lunch for the next two days out of it. Plus all the fry seasonings rock. Next I'm coming back for that ice cream cake...I need it. There are definitely some hiccups since they are so new. Our first visit, the music was SO LOUD. They definitely need some dampeners or something inside. It also took about an hour to get our food the first time, but that was opening weekend. Both things were better the second time around, but still a little slow. I'm confident they'll get on track soon!! I'm so happy to have Bad Apple in the neighborhood, and I know I'll be here often to watch sports, drink cider, and eat my way through the menu.

The burgers are very good. I don't love other things I've tried. I always seem to have an unfriendly service experience.

$18+ for the BBQ Chicken Salad...not exactly thrill about the portion size given price point. Would've been better off going to Chipotle

Kevin the owner is OUTSTANDING! Not only is the food superb (the Bourbon bacon is the best I've ever tasted) the service is Quality overload. The ambiance gives your away-from-home kitchen vibe, take your shoes off Excellence. Lighting is everything to me as I wear double pane glasses, Kevin has light in a cozy and secure place on the corner of Belden Avenue. 10 stars! Excellent place to come in and eat have a drink and get out of the Chicago heat or cold and enjoy yourself.

Great little dog friendly patio with TVs all around and heaters! Friendly service and great food! These are the best cheese curds I've had in chicago! So many burgers to try and the bone marrow was extra flavorful, I think it would have been better paired with a blueberry jam but it was still good !

Came here on a Thursday night with some friends. Was not crowded at all. It was actually pretty empty. They have tv screens with football games on. The burgers are massive with fries that are included. I had the fig one and wasn't a huge fan. The other burgers were tastier. Cheese curds were a hit. The cocktail selection was great!

First time visiting the Lincoln Park location and it did not disappoint. I brought my niece and nephew for an early lunch on a Monday. We were the only people in the restaurant the entire time. The space is huge and has a decent vibe. There's an amazing outdoor patio that will be great when the weather warms up. It lacks the punk, artsy vibe of the original Northcenter location, however, which is a bummer. We were seated right away and our server was great. The menu seemed almost identical to that of the Northcenter location. I enjoyed the Southern Dandy burger, one of my favorites, with a pretzel bun and Old Bay seasoned fries. The kids also enjoyed their burgers and fries, and we loved the cheese curds appetizer we shared. I guess for me everything I eat at The Bad Apple is just a bit much: too many toppings, too much food in general, and it always sits heavily in my stomach for the rest of the day. I know that is probably not an issue for many, but it's why I only go here once every couple of years. However, fancy burger lovers should definitely check out the new space.

Good Food , Good Service , a bit disappointed that I was charged an additional 5% service charge . I wish I would have questioned that . I think it's sad that restaurants do that and make customer very uncomfortable. You guys can do better and 5% is much higher than 3% most places charge . Stop nickel and dime customers

Dined at the Bad Apple on their first day open. We sat on the patio (dog friendly!). Really smooth service for the first day. Yummy food and drinks. Good vegetarian options. Patio: Very large - mostly tables with a small bar area Dog friendly It will be shaded all the time since it's in between buildings and has a few large trees. Quite a few outdoor tv's showing different channels I'm looking forward to coming back to this new neighborhood spot!

As soon as I heard that they opened up a location closer to me I knew I had to go. Pretty massive restaurant with a peaceful outdoor patio in between the adjacent building. I ended up ordering the Elvis's Last Supper again but with sweet potato fries this time. This time the burger was well seasoned which improved the taste a lot. The bacon (something I wouldn't get again solely based on my preferences) was crispy while the semi-crispy plantains added another layer of texture. The best part yet again was the peanut butter. This is arguably the best peanut butter I've ever had and it's homemade! Some may argue there is too much, but as a pb lover there's no such thing. Lastly, the sweet potato fries weren't anything special but that's good enough for me. They had a nice crisp but could have used a tad more salt. Was very tempted to get the mile high ice cream pie, but opted to get it in the future. If you want American food, but want something different, this is the place to go. So many crazy burger options as well as a good variety of appetizers. I'm so glad this place opened up so that whenever I crave a unique burger, I have a place to go.

Had the Harvest Salad .... Delicious . I'll def order that again next time I'm in town. Service was great. Reasonable prices. Great venue.

Kasha at the bar was a lot of fun. It's a beautiful space and the patio is huge. Would definitely recommend coming for Happy Hour. The burgers were huge and delicious.

Finally something went into the old Barleycorn's space! Unfortunately it was this. We went on a slow Tuesday night with a group and the waitress was clearly over her skiis. Orders were missed, charged and not delivered. I understand being overwhelmed, but there was an added attitude that was very offensive to a large group of neighborhood customers. The food is not bad, but there needs to be a management change. The ambiance is not warm. Feels like an Applebee's without the competent servers. Sorry!

Walked in on a slow weekday hoping to be wowed by a great burger and to check out the new space. The space itself is a bit odd. It's massive for a burger place and one would expect it to be fairly full after 4:30, but there were only 2 customers in the place along with the 3 of us. It just felt strange. The food itself was nothing special. Kind of like a Small Cheval burger with a fancy topping or two. We plan to try it again in hopes that it was an off day for them.

Had been looking forward to this place for a long time and was excited to finally be able to check it out. Having walked past it a bunch, it was clear how nice and spacious the patio was, but what struck me upon entering for the first time was the beautiful art work/murals on the while. Really cool vibe and theme. The burger I had (Figs Is In FTW) was every bit as good as the ones I'm accustomed to at the original Bad Apple. Cheese curds and bone marrow apps both extremely tasty. Dessert was the real showstopper. The brownie with layers of vanilla + salted caramel ice cream was ENORMOUS and despite the best efforts of the four of us at my table, we couldn't even finish it. Service was friendly and speedy. Excited to go back.

I'm so happy Bad Apple is in LP now!!! I don't have to travel far to get a fix of ELVIS BURGER! In the space formerly of John Barleycorn: the new outdoor space reminiscent of when Children's Memorial used to be in the neighborhood.

This place is so good, we come here all the time. Great vibes. Ask for Nick, he gives the best service and conversation! The burgers are to die for and this ice cream cake was enough to feed a family of 6 and for only $12. Soooo good

First time customer this weekend and honestly...? Iimpressed! A group of us decided to check this place outand will definitely recommend the patio! The restaurant itself is large and the outside patio is such a vibe. Our group started outside and moved in due to cold but the drinks and food were delicious! I had the blackberry basil mule which was awesome, and the burgers were huge. Our server Jamie was attentive and sweet. Recommended and will be back!

Customer service was awful. Our waitress was not listening to us and assumed we didn't want food and we had to ask to order. We had some simple questions to ask her but she was not able to answer. We got hugo spritzes and there were bugs in them from the mint leaves they clearly did not wash. The food was fine but nothing special.

Nothing beats the care and quality of food which is homemade. Nothing. Time, skill and sheer passion are needed to make meals and their components from scratch, but it is definitely always worth the immense effort. The Bad Apple gets the Olympic gold medal for creating a menu completely homemade right down to the tartar sauce and ketchup while amping up the flavor, elegance and richness not often seen in casual restaurants these days. My dining companion and I went to The Bad Apple on a Thursday early afternoon and were immediately greeted by our host Michelle. Her radiant smile and warm, inviting countenance made us feel immediately welcome as she proceeded to take us to our table. At that moment, she was Master of the House tending bar, taking food orders and serving. Although it wasn't busy at that time since they were open for only about an hour previous to our arrival, she handled everything with a smooth, friendly graciousness, elegant flair and professionalism which was just spectacular. She's definitely a diamond in the Bad Apple crown. The interior of the restaurant packs a punch in Old World charm with warm woods and beautiful stained glass windows yet balances this with modern art that is captivating, exquisitely original and well thought out. The menu itself is a taste explosion of glorious poutines, vibrant salads, brilliantly creative sandwiches, robust dishes and inventive signature burgers that are, by far, the best to be found in the Chicagoland area. Again, everything homemade. We tried the fried cheese curd appetizer. Holy cow! Warmed at just the right level to bring out the sumptuous tart flavor, delicately battered and accompanied by the best homemade buttermilk Ranch I ever tasted, this was a joy to revel in on all levels. My friend had the magnificent Chili Palmer Burger which was just unbelievable. Cooked perfectly with a side of amazing sweet potato fries, the end result made my dining companion close her eyes quite a few times as if she was in an epicurean rapture. Crispy peppered onions, three peppered gouda, chili aioli, lime and arugula made this an instant classic. I had the jaw-dropping, tantalizing fish and chips which was a sight to behold. Practically covering the entire plate, the haddock was beyond exception: breaded, fried and seasoned masterfully, the fish was given its red carpet, center stage moment and deserved the Oscar for its outstanding performance. Perfect in every way. Kevin, the terrific, charming owner who I had the pleasure of meeting, has an absolute gem with The Bad Apple on Lincoln Avenue. He knows exactly what to do to make a restaurant a dining revelation. Their other location is in Lincoln Park where the former John Barleycorn used to reside. Please make The Bad Apple a regular dining spot as I will do from now on. It's unforgettable.

We went to Bad Apple for Happy Hour. The outdoor patio had a great vibe. We ordered 2 of the strawberry cocktails and they were delicious. We tried the cheese curds and pulled pork poutine because they were $10 during HH and they were delicious.

Ordered the bad Apple Burger. Finally waitress comes out walking around in circles. I said it's got to be mine yep of course. Why don't you number your tables? Then she brought it back into the kitchen. It was another 5 minutes before they came out with it. $22 for a cold burger and cold fries.
