Where to Find Margs That Give Back in St. Louis and Kansas City | Eater

"Gameday fans – especially those of the Jayhawks, Chiefs or Tigers persuasions – regularly pack the house at this Plaza bar. Known to be a bit more polished than the typical sport-fueled watering hole, this popular gathering place, located in the heart of KC’s most famous neighborhood, executes American comfort classics flawlessly. Pair them with the classic margarita, which marries Astral Tequila with fresh-squeezed lime juice." - Vox Creative

Stopped by here on our drive across country and I must say, this place truly amazed me. Our bartender Adrianna was amazing! She was so kind and full of energy. Just what we needed on a long road trip. She greeted us coming through the door and had waters to us within seconds. She told us about the special which was a country fried chicken with masked potatoes and veg for only $12!! I wish I got it. We ended up with chicken stripes which were hands beaded and cheese curds which were delicious. They just remodeled the bathrooms which were such a breath of fresh air after going through truck stops. I highly recommend this place when passing by!

The Bar is the perfect spot to catch a game and enjoy some amazing wings! The atmosphere is lively, making it a great place to watch sports with friends. The wings are top-notch, packed with flavor and perfectly cooked every time. Plus, the staff is super friendly and always make you feel welcome. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re looking for great food and a fun vibe!

5/5 ⭐️ Stopped in on a cross-country drive and was genuinely impressed. Adrianna behind the bar was a rockstar! Warm welcome at the door, waters in seconds, and tons of great energy. She mentioned a $12 country fried chicken special with mashed potatoes and veggies (still kicking myself for not ordering it). We went with the hand-breaded chicken strips and cheese curds, both were delicious. Clean, newly remodeled bathrooms were a huge win after hours on the road. Great service, great value, and exactly the kind of spot you hope to stumble on while traveling. Highly recommend stopping here!

The quality of service and food has greatly increased as of late. I live near by and after eating here a few times with my wife it has made it into our regular rotation and has become our go-to spot to take visitors from out of town. For locals: they have regular events and deals that we always take advantage of - our dog loved meeting Santa here!

Google
Burgers (pictured with fries and tots) and Impossible burger (pictured with sweet potato waffle fries), were good, large beef patties! I personally don't care for that type of French fry (limp/soggy). The tots and sweet potato were good. Service was very friendly. Went on a Wednesday during noon hour, they weren't busy. Lots of TVs in this place, I bet it's good during sporting events. Oh, I heard their BLTs are excellent.

Google
Our sever was very nice and polite. She did great. The food "breakfast" however was not edible at all whatsoever. Not entirely sure how you cook an inedible breakfast burrito, the potatoes were burnt and over seasoned with something indescribable. The sausage in the burrito instantly turned my stomach. I had to rush to the restroom. I thought I was going to vomit. My child got the chips and queso. The queso was curdled. It was a disgusting thing to see. Their fountain drinks all tasted metallic as well. I ordered tomato juice as a replacement. It was not good either. It had a taste I cannot describe. Other than the courteous waitress. This experience was awful and disgusting. Will not be returning.

Went here for the AFC Playoff game..wow what a blast and what a fan base..very energetic and FUN!! GO CHIEFS!! Service was phenomenal although the place was packed...nice menu and beer selection..quesadilla was a 7/10..seating at the bar as well as a lower level..TVs for days and the KC vibe is insane!!! On a corner in a neighborhood if you will..just an amazing spot. Had a blast..thanks guys!!

The bartender (Tyson, I think) was super friendly and nice and gave suggestions on the menu to eat. The ambiance is quiet (I was there on a Sunday) but the bar has plenty of TVs to watch sports and other programs. I had the fried chicken salad and unfortunately, it wasn't the best. The avocado was super fresh and bright, but the fried chicken was underseasoned and the bacon was a tad bit burnt so it gave the salad a bitter taste when I got a bite of bacon. They have a garlic buttermilk ranch dressing that was pretty good, and heavy on the garlic, so I got a regular ranch to balance it out. I did enjoy some curly fries on the side and the prices were very reasonable for the food. If you're visiting and on foot, this place sits up a very steep hill from the Country Plaza, so bring your best step!

Yelp
I work in the Plaza so we often come here for happy hours and it is great every time! Our servers are extremely attentive in keeping our drinks full and checking in on us, they have good happy hour deals and very good food options! We recently had a reservation for ~30 people and our server was incredible. Also food-wise, you have to get the sweet potato fries with the marshmallow fluff!

Yelp
We come here to watch KU and Chiefs games. We usually order the buffalo chicken sandwich as it is always really good. The Baked potato skins are very thick, bland and dry. They need to offer sour cream or a side of salsa to help flavor them more. We chose a southwest burger this time with no bun and cottage cheese for extra protein. It was really dry and I had to order some ranch to help give it flavor. The Fries are really good here. Good place to sit and watch games and have drinks. Just regular bar food like burgers, wraps, and sandwiches.

Yelp
There are several locations of The Bar all over the local KC area and I finally got a chance to see why there are multiple locations. I went for a work lunch in the Country Club Plaza area and it was not busy based on the number of customers. However, I saw our waiter served us and worked behind the bar so he was constantly table touching while keeping us taken care of. All five of us ordered burgers/ sandwich from the 2 Classic Pub Burger, Classic Club, Impossible Burger, and a Bacon Jam Burger and everyone finished their burgers and sides without an issue and complaints. I would recommend as a extreme causal burger joint that's reasonably priced with no extra pizzazz.

Yelp
I had been to The Bar West Plaza a few times with friends to watch a game and drink some beers. After going to The Bar with my partner it's now a regular dinner spot. It's a big place with a lot of seating so I've never had a problem finding a seat or table. I love the food and the prices though. The lettuce wraps were great. The chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes is pretty good too and the price is hard to match.

Yelp
Decent dining experience, however it's never a great sign when my lunch partner and I both questioned if the place was open on a Monday afternoon during prime lunch hours. From the outside The Bar looked dark, and from the inside, it looked empty, so at least it was easy for us to seat ourselves at a high top near the window and wait for our server. Once he arrived, it took a while for our waters, which was odd since there was only one other table dining, but we brushed it off. After locating the lunch special menu (conveniently on the table versus on the actual menu) , which there is one for every day of the week, we both decided on wraps which were a few bucks off. The restaurant was quiet with little to no noise and no one at all sitting at the actual namesake bar itself. But, the food arrived super fast, and the wraps came to the table loaded and stuffed to the brim. We both got chicken varieties, but mine was more of a Californian take with avocado and Chipotle mayo, whereas my dining companion went with a classic chicken Ceasar. Both were equally delicious; they were simple but hit the spot. The coleslaw side was also a clear winner with a creamy base instead of a vinegar mixture. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this restaurant again, much preferring its sister establishment over on the Kansas side off Johnson Drive, but once the order was placed to the kitchen the food came out fast and didn't disappoint for a quick casual tasty lunch! I would say The Bar West Plaza definitely deserves more praise than they seem to be getting. Also, if you are looking for somewhere that is pretty much guaranteed to be a less crowded option The Bar would be a good choice. My only critique with the wrap was that it would have been taken to the next level if the soft supple flour tortilla could have been grilled to give it a slightly crispy exterior crunch but, all in all a very good showing for a humble chicken and veggie wrap.

Yelp
Used to be a great neighborhood bar with friendly staff, patrons and semi decent food until recently. Under new management and this has changed for the worse. Thought I'd try it again for the customer appreciation "event". Pathetic. Asked to speak to a manager because my bill was massively incorrect and come to find out, all the servers started that day. So to no fault of their own, had literally no idea what they were doing. Ah, but where was the manager, Amy? She was sitting at the bar taking shots while her team drown with a packed house. When a line began at the the bar, she was kind enough to get up to make room. So kind that she actually grabbed her belongings, put them in her car and left! She must've had plans. To Amy, and all other decision makers at this operation (if you will).. We are unequivocally unimpressed. P.s. All your drafts are flat

Yelp
Best Philly Sandwich in KC. Wonderful bartender as well. TYSON. He also works at the PV location .

Yelp
The bar is my go to spot when I want to watch a game outside of my house. They have a billion TV's playing all of the football games. The food is a bit better than standard bar food which is good. The only downside about this place is the service can be hit or miss.
google avatar

Dante J.

Yelp
I hope no one finds out about this spot. Love it too much. Nice place, classy people, great food.

Yelp
Great bar with good vibes. Drinks are decently priced and cold. Food is cheap and bartenders Ashton was great! Highly recommend

Yelp
One of my favorite French dips. Such a good atmosphere, I highly recommend going during Christmas time, they decorate it so festively. Also, recommend subbing the regular fries for curly fries and getting it with a side of jalapeño ranch. Yummy!

Yelp
This place is the perfect bar to watch a sports game. They have TVs EVERYWHERE. For a bar, having lots of TVs is a given. But this bar has a TV in the each booth. That's pretty sick. The burger is what you'd expect a good bar burger to be. Juicy. Good portioned. Comes with French fries. Soft drinks come with unlimited refills. I can't say the same for lettuce wraps. Not too many IPAs on tap but a good beer selection. Overall: will return for a game

Yelp
My number 1 go to bar food is hands down wings + salad with nachos as a close runner up. I may be late to the party but I was pleasantly surprised by the food. *** The salad...fresh and full of ingredients. The Nachos...phenomenal! I mean what place provides you with an EXTRA side of queso, salsa and guacamole ranch?!? The wings...Flavorful and crispy on the outside.

Yelp
We enjoyed our experience here! Atmosphere: this is very much a bar atmosphere. Lots of tvs, not much noise during brunch, but i can imagine that it can get plenty hectic. Overall good vibe. Wait staff: very friendly. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and prompt. Price: the prices are actually pretty good. Brunch range from $9-$13. Food: i ordered a breakfast burrito. It was Ah-mazing. My friend ordered the burger and I ordered my daughter sliders (kids portion). Everyone was very pleased with the selections. Date night: yeah, it's a good date spot for brunch and if you all are into sports, definitely good for that. Con: The online website says unlimited mimosas are $15 but the store menu says $20. Misleading for the customer and not good.

Yelp
I've been a regular here for a number of years and love the bar. Unfortunately it is sad to see servers understaffed running around while their managers stand by doing nothing. We came to watch a basketball game and got checked on approximately every 80 minutes because there was one server for the entire place. We had two drinks for an entire basketball game. Great servers, terribly managed. Side note they ran out of draft beer and then bottled beer as well. Sad. It's a bummer to write a bad review about a place I love but in the past few months there is an obvious decline in service.

Yelp
Great bar/restaurant a block from (what I consider) the Plaza. Good food, chill and efficient service, a relaxed atmosphere - what more could you want? I went on Wednesday for Trivia with some co-workers and had a fantastic time, even though I really couldn't help much on the trivia. Food-wise, they have a wider selection of snacks/meals than other comparative establishments. Their burgers are pretty tasty, but what had me hooked were the sweet potato fries with marshmello - yes, MARSHMELLOW - sauce. Also, they have a lot of deals for their happy hour and trivia nights, so I'd ask the server for any specials going on. Will definitely be back (especially since 2nd place prize for the trivia was $15 gift card).

Yelp
Great food. Great service. I love their Thai chicken wraps and lettuce wraps. Pretty much everything I've eaten has been delicious. Great little plaza dive bar.

Yelp
Love this place! Great bottomless mimosas and good wait staff. I always like to share with a friend and split the loaded curly fries and the Cobb salad with the garlic ranch. It's the perfect combo. The salad is always fresh and crunchy. I have also tried the fried mushrooms which were so tasty. The breading is a little thick but over all super good. They have a great happy hour as well!

Yelp
Hello- came here Saturday night and did not have a server come to us for 45 minutes and we ordered drinks that took 20 minutes to come. We finally got menus to order a appetizer and did and it took another 45 minutes. We asked to order dinner and the server said the kitchen closed at 9 PM instead of 9:15 tonight. It was 9:07 and she wouldn't let us order dinner. Honestly, this was less than average service and extremely disappointing . The place was not that crowded. Giving 3 stars because the app we did have was very good and so were the capri sun shooters.

Yelp
This was the most appalling experience I have ever witnessed and had happen to me at a restaurant. I worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years (including bartending) and never have I come across an employee that was so mindless, unintelligent and discourteous. I went to The Bar West last Thursday. I asked the bartender, Jake, for a mocktail. I also mentioned I was "with child". He asked if I liked sweet drinks and I responded that I don't like very sweet drinks, but given that it's a mocktail, I would understand if he doesn't know a large repertoire of non-sweet drinks. When I got my bill, I saw that he charged me for captain morgan. I then inquired what ingredients he put in my drink. He responded that the drink was dangerous [due to the amount of alcohol] and that it had Capt Morgan, triple sec, and some other ingredients in it. I repeated to him that I ordered a mocktail, so it shouldn't have had alcohol in it. He informed me he didn't know what a mocktail was and assumed I meant cocktail. I told him (again) that I was pregnant. He then said, "Oh whoops. It wasn't that much alcohol anyways. Sorry. The baby is probably fine." His apology was insincere. He went back to cleaning the bar like nothing had happened and did nothing to attempt to make the situation better-- it did not matter to him at all. My friend and I were in such shock that we didn't have anything more to say to him and just left. Afterwards, I had someone call to speak with the manager. Apparently, the inept bartender was also the manager. He stated that he was sorry for giving me a cocktail while I was pregnant. He was told that the least he could do at that time was refund me for the cocktail he gave me. He stated I had already paid. My friend then explained to him how refunds work and he agreed to a refund. He told my friend that he would tell his boss was happened and my friend gave him a phone number for his boss to call. No call has been received yet.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for awhile now. I'm so glad I finally got to stop by for lunch with my husband. We both ordered off the "Wegan Wednesday" menu. That's their vegan menu, but on Wednesdays it's $2 off each item, so they call it "Wegan Wednesday". Items are reasonably priced to begin with, but once you take advantage of that special you can't go wrong. With beer, our total was around $22 before tip. We both left feeling full, so the portions aren't skimpy. Their vegan menu has several options to pick from. They aren't your standard sad salad either! They've got fish sticks, burgers, grilled cheese, etc. All those foods you can't get vegan versions of at most restaurants. I ordered the fish sticks. It's battered and fried tofu sticks done up to look like fish sticks. They were fried perfectly. The crispy coating was just like fried fish I remember eating before going vegan. The tofu had a good texture too. The only thing mildly disappointing was I don't think the tofu had been seasoned. I happen to adore plain tofu, so I happily inhaled the sticks, but I know most people prefer seasoned or marinated tofu, so they might not like them as much. My husband did not care for them. He thought the only flavor came from the coating. The fish sticks are served with a vegan mayo based dipping sauce. Not really a tartar sauce knock off, but it was a great addition to the meal. My husband got the portobello sliders. I didn't even get a chance to try one because he ate them too fast. They were very appealing looking. Lots of toppings and the mushrooms look like they had been marinated and grilled perfectly. He must have liked them a lot because his plate was clean. The staff was great! We got there for a late lunch, so the place was quiet. Both guys behind the bar took care of us and were super friendly. They were both excited to talk about the vegan menu. One mentioned they normally carry the Impossible Burger, but they were exploring other options since the Impossible Burger is hard to keep in stock for smaller, local restaurants. That day they were serving burgers from LightLife. Also a very tasty plant based option. The whole place looked well cared for. High tin ceilings, dark wood, and large windows everywhere. It didn't feel dark and cramped like some sports bars do. The bathrooms were some of the cleanest bathrooms I've been in at a bar. If I was more into sports, I'd definitely stop by on game nights. TVs are at the end of every booth and they have large flat screens visible from the other tables. I love that this bar has taken the time to go all out in plant based vegan options. It means a lot to us to be able to have multiple choices at a restaurant. It's even more exciting that they really seem to be excited about plant based food! A million thank yous from the vegan community! :)

Yelp
Stick to beer or have your bourbon straight up, the Manhattan we ordered was so sickeningly sweet we couldn't drink it .....

Rhen B.

Yelp
The food is just bad no other way to say it. It's Cisco everything. Service is usually quick and the ambiance is good. Beer is cheap.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
The bar has slowly become my go to neighborhood pub. Great selection of local beer and delicious food. The service is always top notch and there are lots of tv's to catch a game. On my latest trip I tried out the buffalo chicken sandwich. This is not your typical chicken strips thrown on some bread with buffalo sauce. I recommend opting for the curly fries with whatever you order.
google avatar

Tommy F.

Yelp
This review is not about the entire restaurant but the chicken BLT sandwich. We, Tommy and the Taste Buds, are doing a comparison of chicken sandwiches. Today it was the chicken BLT sandwich from The Bar- West Plaza. Our criteria is as follows: Chicken should be slightly crunchy on the outside but not so crunchy as to chip a tooth. And tender and moist on the inside but not so much that the juices are flowing down your face and creating a puddle under you. The bun: Tasty and substantial, enough to handle the chicken but not so the chicken gets lost and looks like a nugget. The innards ( what else is between the bun) should compliment the chicken. The Chicken BLT sandwich: The chicken was slightly crunchy on the outside moist and tender on the inside, the bun adequate and delicious. It was complimented by the customary bacon, lettuce and tomato along with a delicious spread. This gets a Tommy and the Taste Buds rating of Super Yummy.

Ceanna C.

Yelp
I LOVE the Bar. However, on Sunday I placed an order online and went to pick it up. I ordered a Buffalo chicken wrap with no tomatoes and then an extra side of curly fries. I got there and there wasn't an extra side of fries so I had to wait. I could have sworn my cart had two items in it before I sent it in. (Maybe not so that could be my fault) They did get my extra side out quickly. The bartender went over my order - no tomatoes, extra sides of ketchup etc. I got home and the wrap was filled with tomatoes. It was soggy and just gross. I am disappointed. I didn't finish eating and trashed it. I will continue to go to The Bar I was jus completely disappointed.

Yelp
Bar West has good potential to be a fun local neighborhood bar. Bartender was friendly and provided great service. Unfortunately, there are a few regulars that believe they own this establishment and are costing ownership a lot of money. They are rude to staff and customers which ruins the experience. Can't miss them since they sit at the bar nearest the front door. Definitely not a good image for Bar West.
google avatar

Grace A.

Yelp
They didn't have a side of fruit but they did give me a plate of cucumbers and pickles and I really did appreciate that
google avatar

Yelp
I was planning to use my Give & Partake brunch book over the weekend but it was SO packed! I thought about stopping by for lunch during the week since it wasn't as packed compared to brunch on the weekends. There was one server working and she was amazing!! She got our food out really quick. The food was AMAZING and the price for it was worth it. I loved the loaded fries! I will definitely come back here to try other things on the menu and hopefully be able to try their brunch!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Best wings for a great price. Wish they had more on tap, but everything was really good and for a great price.
google avatar

Tyga M.

Yelp
This is one of the most eclectic bars I have been to - R&B music playing in the background, sports on the television (and at your booth....!!!), and and a pretty good brunch to top if all off. I came in with a friend on a Sunday and ordered a breakfast burger; my friend ordered the breakfast burrito. The burger was very good and the curly fries (extra charge) was filling, and they honored my request for borderline burnt bacon on the burger. I only really take away a star from my review because the price for bottomless mimosas is incorrect online - it's $15, not $12. I'll still be back to try other items on the menu!

Tad D.

Yelp
First visit this afternoon. It wasn't crowded but the bar room was very loud. 4 men were enjoying themselves talking loud enough to hear them in 3 states. Bartender was good. Nice choice of Taps. Good menu. The mushroom onion burger (with Swiss cheese) was very good and cooked just as I requested. The onions were nicely grilled. The onion rings (+$2) as a side are forgettable but everything else looked good. Service was good. There are plenty of TVs to watch all the Ganesha

Mike G.

Yelp
Nice and clean inside, service was good for only one server, food was was also good. Blah blah blah go finish review
google avatar

Jordan K.

Yelp
Solid sports bar in the West Plaza. I feel like The Bar is always busy on weekends and has very good bottomless brunch options. The Westwich sandwich was phenomenal. Grilled chicken, bacon, pepper jack, and more on a legit pretzel bun. Fries were also above average. Service was on top of things even with large groups there for hours for the bottomless brunch, and all the games you wanted were on TVs across the restaurant and even at your table.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
I like their food, but wish I would get what I actually ordered. Third time in as many months where I stopped in to grab beers and lunch and ended up with the wrong order. Today I just ate it because I couldn't even get silverware or napkins after waiting forever. The Bar on Johnson drive always gets it right, but this location has some issues.
google avatar

Don T.

Yelp
Absolutely great neighborhood bar. Fantastic atmosphere. Several TVs with sports and current shows. Clean. Fun. Great bartenders. Great staff. And Kif and Kara ROCK. Ask for their suggestions- their king on sharing the drink to meet your mood. Be sure and tell them you read Don and Nataliya's review on Yelp, and tell them you had to see just how great they and the place are - you'll be impressed. If you're a Gin lover, Kara's got your drink.

LaShon S.

Yelp
The Bar is a cool place to have a drink, lunch, or brunch. I have had several items on the menu, and I have to say that I have never been disappoint with any of my choices. The staff is welcoming when I go to pick up my order.

Noah O.

Yelp
Great food, good deals! Very casual good place to chill lots of TVs around. Service was on point too, no complaints at all.

Savannah C.

Yelp
The food was great, but the wait staff was terrible which made the whole experience bad. It took 30 minutes for our waitress to take our order. Then after she brought our order out, 2 of them were wrong and she never asked if everything was okay. We had to go up to a different waitress just to correct our order. She never checked on us. We had to go ask for boxes, ask for our checks and THEN ask the other waitress to run our cards. For being here for OVER 2 hours and it not being busy, we are very disappointed.

Yelp
Titus is amazing!! Had great recommendations for drinks when they were out of a particular vodka I'd requested for a cocktail. Me and my girlfriends will definitely be coming back
google avatar

Ally C.

Yelp
This place was amazing! They had great service, shoutout to Josh We got the loaded fries, cheese curds. and the classic burger. My friend and I couldn't decide which the favorite was. All three were so good. Definitely recommend going here if you're in Kansas City and looking for a great and affordable place to eat.
google avatar

Skyler G.

Yelp
The bar tender Titus is so incredibly relatable and down to earth. I love this bar so much! I will be back.

Scott F.

Yelp
We ordered 4 things and three of them were legitimately bad. I'm not picky, either. Lots of TVs at least.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
This is a fantastic neighborhood drinking hole. Fun little sports bar located off the Plaza that consistently offers delicious food. The food can be inconsistent in quality at times. That being said, their Philly cheese steak and tater tots are consistently solid. Good vibe, good location, and welcoming staff. Definitely recommend for a game day.

Bubba C.

Yelp
Cool place. Just had drinks - no food. Great place to watch a game! Service was terribly slow !!!!!!!! But, I will try it again.

Marie C.

Yelp
So comfortable with lots of TVs for watching your favorite team! Beer is cold and abundant! Food was great and very good portions! The waitress was attentive and helpful! I Recommend this place to hang out with friends and family!
google avatar

Gabby M.

Yelp
So delicious! I went here with my friend a couple months ago because I heard about the vegan options they were offering. I ordered the "Impossible burger" with a side of curly fries. I definitely ate everything on my plate! My friend had a different burger which he also loved. The server we had was also very nice and paid the perfect amount of attentiveness to our table. (Wish I could remember his name.) It wasn't too busy the night we went, which I thought was pleasant. Parking was also an ease which was a positive surprise given the location! Overall, I would recommend going here.

Jeff C.

Yelp
The menu and food here are amazing ... takes bar food to a new level. Only had carryout so far due to COVID. New to the neighborhood and can't wait to make this my local pub!
