Sunday lunch at the Barbary in Notting Hill, London
The menu is ment to be shared, small plates (look at the Octopus skewer). I like the concept a lot, it’s fun and makes you think and talk about food while eating. But the portion sizes are on the very small side. Especially the entrees section. So you need at least 7-9 dishes for 2ppl to eat.
Ordered flatbread, mackerel and beef tartare to start with, followed by octopus with grilled peppers. The bread was brilliant, covered with EVO and all the middle east spices like little cumin and salt flakes. So soft, not rubbery. Mackerel was cured and covered with fresn and soury sauce, crispy peaces of peach worked well with charcoal fish skin. Although harrisa felt a bit too salty and heavy on tartare. I also felt that meat wasn’t soft as expected. I liked seeds crisp, so much flavor.
About 80g of octopus main course unfortunately was so harsh in the flavor that it was impossible to enjoy. Peaces so small got burned so quick on charcoal, and heavy glaze made it too salty and unpleasant to eat.
The service was there and yet there wasn’t if you know what I mean. People doesn’t look happy with what they do, ambience felt empty and off. Although the sister restaurant in Soho is recognized my Michelin Bib, I felt that there are more vibrant places to be.
You should avoid this place on a sunny day as your lunch will be annoyed by the sun shining through naked windows making you fry. Very unpleasant.
