16 Best Places for Live Music in Nashville | Condé Nast Traveler

"Known as 'the Beast' locally, the Basement East is the much larger sister venue to longstanding rock venue the Basement. But with capacity for 575, it's still a place to see acts like Yo La Tengo or Lee Ann Womack up close. Surprise appearances by musicians like Alice Cooper aren't out of the question, either. Compilation tribute concerts and secret shows pop up regularly. The popular Chivanada food truck sells empanadas during shows." - Kristin Luna,Margaret Littman

Google
Great venue! The sound is great. Not too big. Not too small. I was able to enjoy two great live shows here this month and I can't wait to see more.

Bethany Brantley

Google
Staff was friendly, venue is a bit small & it warmed up quick, but overall seeing The Warning's ⚡️rescheduled show was well worth it! Being a small venue the concert was upclose & personal!

Google
Great place to take in a show. If you are ever in Nashville then take a chance on this east Nashville venue. All kinds of genres are played here. The bartenders were very friendly which is a welcome change from some places I've been where the bitter old bartender does not have any personality at all. While there are many places to choose one the reason I liked this is the proximity to a couple other spots you can walk to like lakeside lounge next door. After the show ended they were fairly relaxed about letting you linger and didn't try to rush everyone out the door. Drink prices are what you would expect to pay maybe a tad higher.

Google
The Basement East is absolutely fantastic! It's a super venue, just the right size to be intimate and in a great location too! The one thing I'd love next time is to see a few more tables and chairs. It's fun standing in front of the stage, but it's hard after a fulls days work. But I still love y'all and I am definitely going to give you 5 stars and post some pics and videos that I took. We had a blast and will be back again soon. I love Basement East!

Google
We went to see CG5. The staff was organized and helpful. The show was great. Sound system was great. Bar was good. Prices were decent for Nashville.

Melissa Knight

Google
If you can get in for their Boot Scootin 90's county show, do it! We had so much fun dancing and singing the night away. The band was amazing! Get ticket in advance on their website.

Google
Fantastic intimate venue for live music in an awesome part of Nashville. We were there for The Kiffness and his first performance in the US.

Logan Robinson

Google
Seen Cold play here twice now, and both experiences were great! Absolutely love small, intimate venues like this.

Yelp
What a cool spot to catch a show! We picked up tickets to see Smallpools (along with a few other bands, including local gem Moody Joody!) on a Sunday evening and had an awesome time. Parking was easy, although it's worth it to show up early to snag a free spot. We ended up spending $25 to park right across the street from the venue, which is a little steep, but not awful for several hours in Nashville. Inside the Basement East is intimate and divey - with a robust bar set-up. Our bartender was fast and friendly, which goes a long way in a setting like this. The drinks were reasonably priced, especially for a Nashville music venue. They also sell assorted CBD and Delta-8 products, along with a few varieties of cigarettes. You can't smoke inside the venue, but there is a designated smoking patio for anyone who needs it. The music was incredible - the sound was great, and the lights really added to the show. Set changes in between bands were fairly quick, while still allowing time to use the restroom or grab another drink. If you're a local who hasn't been to a show at Basement East yet, add it to the top of your list! We'll absolutely be back for another show soon.

Yelp
I liked this venue a lot. We Ubered but parking looked spacious and relatively easy. The smoking patio was nice and large. Drink prices were reasonable for a venue like this. Security was pleasant and not overbearing. Was allowed to bring in my purse. Good location as there's other bars around you can go to after the show.

Betty M.

Yelp
Great show! Standing only. Bar; no food. Paid parking lot. Reasonable ticket prices. Always a fun time.

Yelp
Came on a Friday evening, there's free street parking if you can manage to snag that somewhere around the neighborhood, otherwise there's paid parking right next to the venue. Bought tickets at the door for $25 (there's almost $8 fees for buying online!). Venue is small and cozy, standing only. Stage has lights, audience can get pretty much up to the stage, one of the singers came to the floor to interact with the audience which was pretty cool. Listened to Mills, Calico, Paul McDonald, and BabyJake. Second and fourth musicians weren't my style, too loud and flashy and the sound was just not pleasant, walked out of those two. Good venue though with lots of artists all the time!

Yelp
I went to my first concert at The Basement East and I was pleasantly surprised. I expected drinks to be way more expensive and I expected to be told I couldn't leave and come back. However, drinks were reasonably priced, we could come and go as we pleased and most importantly - parking was so easy. We showed up early to get a good parking spot and it was worth it.

Yelp
Love this venue, been there many many times!! The only negative thing is that l wish they would put the air conditioner on.l noticed the bands getting too hot. I almost had a heat stroke.... The people are friendly. I am handicapped and there is NEVER any seating for me which needs to be addressed. Anyway, definitely visit it. They have many different genres here. Rock&Roll at its finest
google avatar

Yelp
The only reason it does not get 5 is because the restrooms were ehhhh...but it is a bar NO harm no foul. Best music I have heard in a while. Uncle Lucias and Hollier. Awsome show. However the kudos go out to the hardest working bartender in Nashville. Jaclyn (spelling probably wrong). Lady killed it. Yall need to give her a raise.

Seth D.

Yelp
Saw White Reaper on 3/24/23. Venue is awesome. Easy to get to. Parking close. Want to give a shout out to the bartender. My wife was pregnant and not feeling well. Gave us a sprite free of charge and went out of his way to get her a seat. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
If your in Nashville, this is a relaxed spot to enjoy a variety of live music. The vibe can be what you want, the bar selection is unique and revolving, and parking is assessable nearby for free.

Yelp
Tonight was my very first time going to see music at The Basement East!!! I don't know why it has taken me so long to check out a band here...I was the lucky winner of 2 free tickets to see Austin Meade (opening act) & the Read Southall Band - THANK YOU @NowPlayingNashville The music was great and the venue is simple and easy to navigate. I highly recommended coming early to grab a seat at the high bar tables... (most of the venue is standing room only). There is a free parking lot and nearby street parking. I'm not sure If everyone was at LOTG but it wasn't that busy tonight. I'm not sure how the venue picks the lineup but I thought both bands were really good! Austin is from Texas - favorite song was Savannah! Read Southall is from Oklahoma and describes themselves as Southern Rock & Crunchy Country . My favorite song was "Why?" - Loved belting out the lyrics! The drinks were great and the bartender was really nice.

Yelp
One of the best places to see a show. This is a low key venue with great acoustics and views. I purchased a general admission ticket to a sold out show and it was the perfect amount of people without being too crowded. There are two bars that serve good, reasonably priced drinks. Highly recommend this venue.

Yelp
SOUND: Oh goodness, the ALT Aaron Lee Tasjan band and the rest of the FOUR TWENTY line up sounded amazing!! It didn't seem to matter where I stood, out in the crowd it was so so good. It was so loud and people were also talking so loud. HEAT VS AC: It was maybe in the 60s during the day and felt cool in the room and then it filled up and man it was SO HOT! Everyone started moving towards the door to catch the cool breeze every time the door opened! PARKING: Unfortunately if you arrive any later than at least one hour before doors open it's hard to find a FREE parking spot (and nearby). I recommend arriving around 7pm if doors are 8pm, and walk down to 5 points for pizza or burgers then walk back for the show. Typically the band goes on at 9pm, so it's perfect timing. DRINKS: Sadly I did not end up getting a drink to comment on the pricing or taste. FOOD: Wait! I saw someone posted about food!! I didn't know that they had food!!?!?! I love bar ish food! I'm so bummed I didn't find out until reading some other reviews on here.

Yelp
I thought I'd caught a show here before until I arrived the other night (turns out I was thinking of the East Room). So, I'd wondered how 5 full bands would pull off a set in a basement setting (which is what the above mentioned venue really is and that's not a knock either, seen some cool music there) only to realize this is a full size (for up to 400 anyway) modern music venue. Great affordable beers and shots, clean bathrooms, great sound system. Cool security (thanks for letting me put my merch in my car so I could thorougly enjoy the pit), good (and fast) bartenders. And...venue owners who know how you are supposed to behave at a metal show. Thanks for letting us rip the pit the way the show intends.

Amelia S.

Yelp
lovely venue. can't wait to have my parents visit this when they're in town next. nice and open. good acoustics. friendly and attentive staff.

Yelp
It was so crowded for the Old Dominion show we didn't even get in the door! Would of loved to see it! The building looks a little worn on the outside, i had seen other postings to "watch out it's not in a good area". I don't see any eve since of that other than an old liquor store down at the bottom of the hill abt a half block away. Its like an other city area that I think is experiencing revitalization. You have to watch yourself and lock your car every place now a days!
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
Great live music venue! Was lucky to be recommended this place by my Uber driver. Saw an amazing show, and it wasn't crowded like the downtown area. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Great establishment and did a great job with the Geddy Lee book signing and Q&A. Huge crowd, lots of us crazy Rush fans lined up early for a chance to be up close and personal with the Big Beautiful Book of Bass author Geddy and get a signed copy. The staff is awesome with crowd management - getting everyone in quickly, managing the crowd inside and organizing a great event. I'm sure it's just a good on a music night, but here on a Sunday evening for a author's Q&A and signing, they did a great job and made everyone feel welcomed and comfortable! Thanks for a fun night!

Yelp
The wife were walking in the hood with the pups when we saw the chalkboard sign stating that brunch was being served and pups are welcome so it only made good logic to go in and try. We sat on the deck on a overcast day and enjoyed a couple of nice mid mid morning libations. The service was East Nashville good and the drinks were Ok. We did not get any food only because we had just eaten at Edley's before happening on to this spot. It was a great atmosphere and we enjoyed our time sitting on the deck and enjoying the people watching. The food from afar looked good and we would certainly return.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
I will never support these people again. As if a lack of parking and other issues weren't a problem, but the management here is certainly the biggest one.
google avatar

Lucas L.

Yelp
The BEAST was a classic and very well respected. Good room to see a show in, but could use more seated options and better crowd management. It was always a little warmer and sweatier than it needed to be as well. Looking forward to their potential rebuild if that happens.
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
Everyone I know loves the "Beast". Excellent venue with a wonderful diverse set of shows that are always fun to see. The staff is top notch - they keep a well organized place night after night. It can get hot, but the music keeps you wanting to stay for more. Sadly, the 3/3 tornado destroyed our beloved building, but thanks to the staff everyone survived. They are rebuilding and when COVID19 is nothing but a bad memory I'll be back often.

Yelp
I ordered the F Bomb sandwich (see attached) with a side of chips and guac and it was delicious. Unique and flavorful, also the guacamole was terrific. It's hard to find a good guacamole and I could've eaten theirs all night. I didn't expect bar food to be so tasty but I recommend it and intend to try their Sunday brunch.

Yelp
My daughter and I went to Nashville for the weekend and stayed in East Nashville. Looking for something to do after dinner, we walked up to The Basement East and wound up having an absolutely unbelievable time. Americanafest was happening so we enjoyed hours of a 1969 themed show. It seemed every performer was better than the last. The hosts were engaging and kept things moving through the four seasons as the emcee termed the show's parts. Norman Greenbaum performed Spirit in the Sky! On the drive back to Milwaukee we listened to music from as many of the performers as we could find. The Basement East was the perfect place to begin our country music weekend getaway. We had so much fun that the next morning I found my drink cup with the lime still in it . Just an amazing time.

Yelp
I will be back! Food is amazing - every item on the menu was fresh, creative, and "real". And such great flavor! I couldn't have made more perfect nachos :) The prices are great for such quality and quantity. And the wait staff was excellent.

Yelp
The Basement East is a great concern venue and it's definitely a location to visit if your wanting to be up close to some of the best up and coming artist. This was my first visit to the location and I will definitely be back in the future. One of my favorite pets about the location is starting at 6pm you can park across the street in the fireman's credit union lot for FREE but if you get there late a pay lot it available next to the location with several lights so it's safe. Upon entering the door they scan your ticket and provide you with a wrist band, and once you get into the venue they have a large bar with three serving stations making service relatively quick; beers were priced at $6 per 16oz which isn't terrible and to the right of the bar is the stage with a couple seats which are elevated to the right of the stage. The ppl at the venue seemed nice and it's definitely a place to visit for a great time while in the Nashville area.

Yelp
Happy Hour: Monday - Friday: 4PM to 7PM 2-for-1 draft beers, $1 off all liquor and half price sandwiches!

Yelp
If you are in Nashville, but not trying to get all in the country scene, check out The Basement East. New Found Glory was wrapping up their 20 year tour and the venue was awesome!! Drink prices weren't inflated -- low end at $2 up to maybe $5-6 which is great because you can stroll over to the food register and grab a a sandwich or guac n chips. Venue had a decent sound system that let you hear yourself instead of having to constantly scream. I didn't have a chance to check out the pub, but I will if I'm back in the area. Overall, it's a decent venue to see bands and other acts at prices you won't get in an arena/ballroom setting.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of this venue. It's in that sweet spot of being the perfect size; not too big and not too small. I came here for the first time on Friday night for a sold out show, but never felt annoyed with the audience. It was very crowded but not so bad that I couldn't go to the bathroom or wait a long time for a drink. I appreciate that! You can always find a good spot along the sides, and we were even able to get close to the front later on in the show without issue. I love that! Drink prices are reasonable and the bathrooms are very clean and new, which is a nice change from some other venues in Nashville. I really enjoy the Basement East and can't wait to check out another show here!

Yelp
One of the funnest dance bars in East Nashville. If you are looking to go out dancing in Nashville, and not head to Broadway, then Basement East is a great option for you. The drinks are pretty cheap, the dance floor is huge, and you always get s fun and young crowd. Basement East is also located close to a lot of other bars in East Nashville, within close walking proximity.

Yelp
Ended up here on a recommendation from our lyft driver. I really liked it. The crowd is definitely hipster and younger than I am. And at first that bothered me, but as it started filling up, more people like me arrived. We saw four bands for an incredibly low price. I cannot believe how inexpensive live entertainment is here. The only drawback to me was that there weren't many places to sit. None of the acts we saw were country. Which was a good thing for me. I like country, but after all of the honky tonks,I'm good for a while.
google avatar

Peggy Sue M.

Yelp
Had to wait in line for about 20 mins...brrr!Standing only...no tables!! Drinks were reasonably priced. But enjoyed all the bands that perform. Larkin & Poe rocked it out!! Wishful thinking...but it would be great if they had some kind of heat for the deck.
google avatar

Yelp
Easy parking. Easy entry. Easy access to bars and restroom. Acoustics were great even in sold out crowd.

Yelp
I have to update my review as the menus here has changed. As it says below (I left my original review which was a 5 star review from me) this place had a small but fantastic late night menus of quality wraps and sandwiches! It was a gem in a sea of Nashville southern blah of mediocre BBQ and greasy bar food. Unfortunately, this has changed and they have succumbed to the typical Nashville late night menus... Bratwurst or Italian sausage sandwiches, grilled cheese and quesadillas. I hope that they improve this unfortunate change, although I don't have high hopes. The beer still rotates out but I've been noticing less and less interesting brews and more typical run of the mill stuff. Original post: This place is quickly becoming my new hang. Small but very solid menus. Try anything with the habanero sauce. The portobello press is awesome! Good rotating beer selection as well. Parking across the street in the fire house lot or down the street near the atm if the lot is full for a show. Also the venue, if you are considering going sounds good and is quite large. Check out a show sometime!

Yelp
My friend got us some tickets to see the Prince tribute at Basement East, so we hit up Lyft and got ourselves over to the East side for the evening. We got there early so we could hopefully get something to eat. Around back of the venue is a bar area that has tables inside as well as a nice deck with tables outside. We ordered food and drinks at the bar and sat outside to shoot the shit and wait. Their menu has some interesting selections - bahn mi with pork, spicy pickled carrots; grilled chicken with some sort of spicy sauce; tacos; etc. The bahn mi was actually really good, definitely had some spice, and was served with a small handful of tortilla chips. It wasn't too big and hit that sweet spot of not so much food you were stuffed and unable to catch a buzz and not so little food that you got wrecked drunk and had to get carted home. The specialty drinks they had going on for Bonnaroo weekend were also good and only $5 for blood orange vodka and Red Bull Red. Once we paid up, we went around to the front to go inside the venue. The stage was on the right as you walked in, bar straight ahead. Some tables were set up in the middle of the room and there were barstools in front of the bar. There was also a small mini-bar set up on the wall beside the hallway to the restrooms that had beer and a small selection of liquor drinks. The size pretty nice and luckily it was kind of empty that night so everyone could get a good look at the band playing Prince jams. Smoking outside on the deck. Bartenders were fast, I suggest using the mini bar if they have your drinks as that's less busy and much more convenient. Overall a good venue and I look forward to seeing other shows here!

Yelp
Came here tonight. The tap option was low but the drinks were good. Mainly beer not many "mixed drinks" options. The food menu was slim, but pretty yummy. If you don't go to eat a meal at least try the gauc. It was so fresh and delicious. It was reasonably and normal priced menu. The patio was nice and lots of seating.parking seemed limited but free.

Yelp
I LOVE live music. Living in Nashville is tough because there are almost too many great concerts. My mind is telling me yes but my bank account is telling me no. This is why I appreciate places like The Basement East. The tickets are affordable and they bring in some maybe less-know talent that I love. Not saying that the artists aren't famous, they just aren't on the ridiculous level of say JT. I went to my first show here on a Sunday night to see Marian Hill. Tickets were a little over $30 after taxes and fees. The Basement East is in East Nashville (duh) so parking isn't a nightmare. There is a paid parking lot next to the building but we found free parking on a nearby street. Doors opened at 7:00 so we got there around 7:30. There was no line to get in and the check in process was super easy. I printed off my tickets but there was no need for that. If you bought tickets online they have all of the information on their tablet. Showed them our IDs, got a wristband, and we were in! The Basement East is a smaller dive venue. One bar in the back with reasonably priced drinks. They had a decent draft list and we were able to get an IPA for $6. There is a patio and some high top tables with chairs. The stage is at the front and is nothing fancy. Standing room only except there was one section with couches that was up a little higher. I'm guessing this is the VIP section or first come first serve. It wasn't too busy when we got there so we were able to get great spots at the front of the stage. Of course we got pushed back a bit once the music started by those concert goers that don't seem to care about personal space or basic human manners, but that's just the concert life. The concert itself was AMAZING. The sound was loud and I really don't think there is a bad spot to watch the show. We were so close to the stage so I felt like I was right there with the band. There were lights and fog so the stage was transformed into something really cool. I mean I don't think Marian Hill can do any wrong so that definitely helped. My one complaint is when I bought 2 beers at the bar, they kept my card open without telling me. I tipped in cash so I didn't even think about the fact that I didn't sign anything. I knew I was only going to be buying one drink because I was driving. So then 2 days later I got charged the extra fee for not closing out. Hard to close your tab when you don't know it's open. Oh well. Life goes on. Lesson learned. The concert was great and I will for sure be back to see more!

Yelp
Do I really need to review the BEast?! In short, check calendar, if something interests you, go. The BEast is local, the owner is a legend, and they bring in some really amazing acts. Even if you're on the fence or just want to hear live music, go! It's intimate enough, the bathrooms are decent, and the pub is a nice refuge from the main area. BEast for life!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Stop what you're doing right now and go to the Beast Pub. My friend Jess Nipples and I had a great great experience here. GET THE MAKI ROLLS. PLEASE GOD. They are amazing. Be sure to smoke cigarettes and check out the view of Nashville from the balcony.

Yelp
Decided to stop by this place for brunch on Sunday and so glad we did. We had reservations at a smaller spot around the corner, but the wait was over an hour. My boyfriend and I were hungry, so I trusted Yelp and found this place. It's a cool rock and roll bar. Their brunch mimosas are not your typical mimosa,s as in, there is not any orange juice in them. We're talking champagne and flavored vodka. 3 deep and I blew over the legit limit for blood alcohol level. How, you ask?! Well, I know because they have a machine that you can check your BAC level at the bar. I ordered their vegetable quiche of the day which had pimento cheese and sriracha in it. It was pretty yummy. Had a few sticks of jalapeno bacon on the side as well. The best of the experience was our server. Super down to Earth and so awesome.
google avatar

Yelp
Terrible experience. Bouncers are rude with sketchy hands. Brutal. Supposed to go to a concert. One friend didn't get in cuz she's 40 and didn't have Id. Other friend got felt up. Nice place. If you're into getting Kavanaugh Ed.
google avatar

Erick C.

Yelp
Stoked to have a great smoke free pub to hit whenever! Just behind the venue. It's open all the time, not just when they're shows. Great food too!
google avatar

Veronica P.

Yelp
Great venue, great sound, amazing night. HOWEVER they wouldn't let my friend come in due to him RESEMBLING someone who is banned from the premises. I was disappointed to hear he couldn't come along to enjoy last nights show all because of a resemblance to someone else. Are you going to kick out every bearded long haired mid twenties man? There goes your demographic.
google avatar

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Awesome place with great vibes! The entire staff was great and the stage setup was perfect! Parking wasn't the best but wasn't bad either! The setup and stage really made everyone kind of feel like family. The sound and lighting was perfect, unlike a lot of smaller venues that tend to over do it. Overall one of the best small venues I've been to & I'll definitely be back! If you enjoy good people, great drinks, and awesome live music this is the place for you!!

Yelp
Oh yeah! This is going to be awesome, having this venue in the neighborhood. This is too good to be true. AMPLE parking - so that will never be a problem. Plenty to eat within walking distance. *hint* go early, park, walk to dinner. Perfect. Venue: The Pros: large, cavernous building with a large bar on one end and a fair amount of tall tables to sit and view the band. Plenty of space to stand, lean, find a chair, wander. Attentive bartenders. Good A/C system. No problem cooling the interior. Sound is excellent. Good acoustics. Good sound system. Cons: 1 toilet for the women. The lights behind the performers are bright, bright, bright lights that hit the audience that are sitting up close to the stage - with an almighty glare. There's no way to sit at the front tables and take photos of the performers. Hell, you can't even sit and watch the band because the lights are hitting you directly in the eyes. Those need to be turned off. There's no reason for them. Other than that.. We enjoyed it, loved the space, loved the ambience, loved the energy. Welcome to the neighborhood!

John J.

Yelp
This was a really solid spot. Bingo / Arts Market / 2 for 1 drinks / outdoor patio. I think I'd do a disservice by even trying to go into it more. Just go here.

Yelp
We didn't eat but we did get an amazing deal on beer right before we went to Beyonce! It is less than two miles away from Nissan Stadium so its super convenient to pre game any football game!!!! $10.50 beer buckets with six beers ALL DAY ON SUNDAY. And two-for-1 drinks (mixed, draft, bottles, and cans) all day on Sunday. You just can not beat that!!

Yelp
Wasn't a big fan of the brunch we had this morning. Great music but super loud. The breakfast burrito was bland and basically filled with undercooked sliced potato. The Pub Mary was way too salty. I liked that they took a risk with it and used fresh tomatillo, but for every sip of drink I had to take a hit of water. Very overpriced for what it was.

Mymoomyum M.

Yelp
I collapsed from heat stroke due to no air conditioning during Billy Sheehan's bass solo. I drove 600 miles to see that solo. I had to go lay down for the remainder of the bass solo (and an additional song, "Ghost Town") on one of the dinette booths until I gained consciousness. It was THAT hot. To add insult to injury, the paid parking next door ended literally 4 minutes early and they promptly gave me a $60 parking ticket...on top of the $10 I already paid for 4 hour parking. F this place. F it hard, F it long.

Yelp
Good venue with plenty of space. We went to the Dixie chicks tribute concert and it was a good time.

Yelp
Nashville's best place for live music! Every genre and every kind of vibe you are in search of.
