East Village Beer Hall Zum Schneider Closes After 20 Years — and More Closings | Eater NY

"East Village coffee shop the Bean shuttered two locations (First Avenue & East 9th; Second Avenue & East 3rd) due to rising costs, leaving one remaining location on Third Avenue and East 9th and a soon-to-open spot on Broadway and East 9th." - Luke Fortney

Google
Such a cute coffee shop with a retro 70s old aesthetic. The shop was large and had plenty of seating. The food section was amazing and they had a good variety of drinks. The coffee itself was very good. It was not as sweet most coffee I get at other places and the flavors were not as strong. Overall I would definitely recommend this shop!

Google
I’ve wanted to visit the shop for a while and it’s pretty good. Decorations are mixed retro-modern, fairly large space so it’s suitable & comfortable for working & studying. I got hot cappuccino with mocha flavor, which is good but not really different with other café. My cup is pretty big so if you get it, you can chill with your ONE drink for hours to work/study 🙂Will try different drinks next time.

Google
Best coffee shop in Auburn! I frequently go here to study, and I’ve had a wonderful experience every time. The coffee always tastes great, the Tex Mex Breakfast casserole is top notch, and the cinnamon roll is a MUST!

Paul W.

Google
Cinnamon rolls are huge. Coffee was warm, and this was after they microwaved it. So can't say if they have good Coffee or not.

Google
No idea how this place has 4.4 from a large number of reviews. They messed our order up twice, then on leaving when I had my 1yo son in my arms while also pushing a stroller, the owner (?) (who had been sitting on a couch the entire time that we were eating our breakfast) made us return to the table to clear out dishes into tubs, by rudely saying “dirty dishes go in these tubs”. … Absolutely no issue with this if it had been told to us (we wouldn’t have tipped if this was the case) but a. why drag me back in when I am already maxed out with a child and pram, b. Why did I tip, c. There were 3 staff behind the counter doing nothing at the time, along with the older gentleman owner who all watched us do this. I have to say that I travel for about half of the year and have never been put in this position before, let alone for mediocre food and coffee. What a horrible experience and restaurant, and owner.

JP J.

Google
The place was a zoo on Saturday. Owner was working the register and clueless as how to manage flow. He just kept taking orders (instead of pausing and helping get orders served) while the young workers were buried and overwhelmed, all the while orders kept piling up. After 30-minutes I skipped my latte ordered and just begged for a drip coffee to go. Maybe this is why ministries shouldn’t pose as coffee shops.

Google
I like the new location and the fact that they kept the vintage furniture and decor. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. I had a latte with peanut butter flavor and it was tasty. I also order a piece of the southwestern breakfast casserole and it was good but could've been a little more spicy. Overall a great vibe and experience.

Conor C.

Google
Good quality coffee in Auburn, I've never had trouble finding a place to sit inside. Good place for breakfast as they have cinnamon rolls, they're amazing, and waffles. The Bean also has a large selection of teas and numerous gelato's to choose from.

Yelp
I coffee shop similar to Starbucks but has a home style touch. It felt like I was relaxing in a vibrant southern grandmas kitchen. The service was fast. I went on a weekday. The food was ok. The cinnamon bun was the best.

Janina T.

Yelp
I prefer this restaurant's crepes over IHOP. And their mini omelettes are tasty as well.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Our new favorite spot in Auburn! My husband and I went for the first time today and their mocha frappes are great and their homemade cinnamon rolls are the best we've ever had. Service was great too, we definitely recommend it!

Ryan B.

Yelp
Eclectic atmosphere, excellent service and outstanding food for brunch. Really enjoyed talking with the Auburn family here.

Yelp
Must try the cinnamon rolls. Great stop on a gameday morning. Coffee is good. My go-to breakfast is the Tex-amex casserole. $6 for a very filling meal! Love that! I usually come here to pull out my computer and work for a couple hours. They play the music a little too loud for my taste. Also wish it wasn't christian rock.

Yelp
What a nice little nook! I dropped my mother off for her hair appointment and found this less than a mile down the road. The very friendly barista cheerfully took my order and I logged into the wifi and got busy. The food was out quickly. True to its name, the Spicy Avocado toast was all those. Sprinkled with spicy salt and a dollop of salsa over the crème cheese and fresh avocado slices. The multigrain toast was a nice chewy base. The interior of the Bean is kinda "eclectic thrift shop." Plastic chairs in that light blue 60's hue, linoleum bars across both windows with wheeled drafting stools, couches in several corners with lighting from my childhood. A bookshelf holds several well-work boxed board games (connect four had several versions!) On this cold rainy Monday afternoon before Christmas, there were fewer than a dozen folks, singly and in small groups, talking over a 1940's big band soundtrack.

Yelp
Over all great, got breakfast and two different coffees a Naughty Hot Chocolate and Smore drink, great got breakfast casserole and waffles has well has Christmas tree cheese cake. Staff was nice and inside is a lot of 1970s decor. Service was fine, but one thing I say being a never been here customer it's not helpful, they didn't ask anything or suggest anything, and when we got up to leave guy told us we have to bust our own table, which I don't mind just like to know before getting ready to walk out. Every thing tasted great, just felt like they thought we should know everything like we been there before.

Addi P.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in we were welcomed. I truly appreciate the hospitality at this place and the decorating. The food was perfect, chefs kiss, I love how they have many different seat options. We got the famous cinnamon roll and the spicy avocado toast. for our drinks we had the fall season pumpkin chai and i got myself their pineapple coconut smoothie.

Yelp
Love this place's decor! It's got the dreamiest furniture and aesthetic touches from my favorite era. The staff is super friendly and the coffee is good. I ordered hot coffee first thing in the morning to take to a conference for a group and they got it together quickly and with care.

Yelp
Excellent coffee... My son buys beans from here and is really particular about his coffee. I'm impressed... and would come back.

Robert S.

Yelp
$2.75 for cup of coffee $2.75 for the REFILL!!! Seriously? They don't have a free refill or maybe a $1 refill? I travel all over the southeast for work and live good coffee shops and I have NEVER been charged more than a $1 for a refill... Still looking for a good coffee shop in Auburn...

Yelp
Get ready to take out your wallet for these cinnamon rolls. For a dozen was 50$ very good but wow

Yelp
In the midst of Auburn University's campus, this mom and pop bakery is said to have the best cinnamon rolls in Alabama! I'll probably never know, because they were completely sold out before we walked in at 10:00 a.m. on a random Saturday morning in March. I'd suggest you arrive before 8:00 a.m. if you have a prayer of beating out the college kids. Even with notorious Friday night parties, the co-eds can apparently wake up for cinnamon rolls. But I can tell you about two other items. The french toast is very good, topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The toast is Texas thick and delicious, still slightly doughy in the middle just the way I like it! Even partially caramelized on the bottom! I'm not a fan of breakfast casseroles, but their Tex Mex version was so good! A tad cheesy, fluffy eggs, little bits of soft potatoes, super delicious!!!
google avatar

Tessa A.

Yelp
5 stars for amazing service. The ladies that work there are always kind & go the extra mile to ensure you are taken care of. I've snagged their cinnamon roll both times I have gone so far & it's always a hit. The vibe is 100% mid century & all the decor is vintage from the entry down to the bathrooms. It's pretty spot on. All three of those things makes for a good experience. My daughter & I both love this shop!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Looking for the best place that serves cinnamon rolls, look no more! One of my favorite coffee shops in town. I love that they have so many food and coffee options! I can sit here all day. Everything is so affordable and delicious. Seating inside is spacious and cozy and the staff are amazing and helpful. Will definitely be back soon!

Ryan H.

Yelp
Great owner and team. Willing to listen to feedback on items they sale and make update and changes. Nice atmosphere and really good coffee.

John B.

Yelp
Honestly delicious coffee and chai. Such cool interior and nice staff. HOWEVER, the lids on the cups SUCK. without even touching the lid, it got on our phones, shirts, car, anywhere you can think of SOMEHOW liquid leaked out. Not going back just because of the cheap flimsy .2 cents lids. Do better. Other than that great!

Baytes-Gabriel J.

Yelp
This places was amazing! I love when coffee shops can do it all (food + pastries + coffee). The bean has a great atmosphere, great customer service, and great food. The cinnamon roll is. a. must. But also go with friends so you can try their other stuff too! I had the strawberry toast and it was delicious!!!
google avatar

Dani S.

Yelp
I came for the cinnamon rolls to be honest. I heard they were good, and I had a craving. Everyone failed to tell me that the icing is like liquid cake frosting lava and the rolls themselves are like big cinnamon clouds. I've never had such a fluffy cinnamon roll! What I didn't expect is that the cinnamon rolls weren't my favorite thing I consumed. The Bean served me the best cold brew I've ever had. It was smooth and delicious. I felt like I could taste the perfect roast on every bean. It was great!
google avatar

Todd B.

Yelp
The cinnamon rolls were to die for, but the service is slow and the coffee was nothing to write home about. The atmosphere is really unique and it could be a great study area, and I can't stress enough how good these cinnamon rolls. Note: you have to get there EARLY if you want a chance to eat one, because they only make a limited amount every day. Definitely try it for the cinnamon rolls.

Yelp
The best iced coffee in auburn The ambiance is very 70's grandma but grandma is a good barista with 10+ years experience and we love her The French toast and breakfast casserole is fun The iced camomile tea is really good

Caroline K.

Yelp
As a college student at Auburn University, I have had my fair share of trips to The Bean Coffee Shop to study, hangout with friends, or to grab a sweet treat. Each time it's the same experience, friendly efficient service, great atmosphere, and incredible drinks and food. Would recommend this place to anyone seeking a good study spot or a nice place to stop by for some coffee!

Jacquie Q.

Yelp
Food was excellent. We loved the breakfast casserole, vegetarian breakfast casserole and avocado toast. The cinnamon roll was absolutely delicious. The workers were all very friendly. Will definitely go back. Love this place!
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
I love this place!! Honestly one of my favorite spots in Auburn to study and meet with friends. The atmosphere is amazing and the coffee is delicious. I love how friendly the staff is. They have delicious food options like cinnamon rolls and breakfast casserole too!! If you're looking for a small business to support, this is the spot!!!
google avatar

Yelp
For such an unassuming building this place is really nice and spacious on the inside. I wasn't expecting to see all of the seating in here. But it was really welcoming once you step inside and the barista here was kind and asked me how my morning was going. It was nice that she took the extra second to ask me that. They have a lot of flavor options which you can add to your drinks and I appreciated that they had various sugar free options. I had the sugar free hazelnut latte and it was one of the best I've had around town. They didn't have very many pastry options but you can tell that the cinnamon rolls are really popular since everyone sitting at a table had one when I walked in. Will definitely check one of those out next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! I loved going here for breakfast with my freind Jamie! The food is very good mostly pastries and little snick snacks which are prepared for you and brought out quickly. The staff was very friendly and helped me pick a tea flavor I hadn't tried before. The vibes of this coffee shop are very laid back and chill lots of comfortable seating and electrical plugs great for doing homework! Overall 10/10 would recommend! P.S. If you order nothing else !GET THE CINNAMON ROLLS!
google avatar

Sophie Y.

Yelp
A very friendly staff and a nice vibe. This was my first time coming here and I got a matcha latte with oat milk and one of their famous cinnamon rolls. I would have gotten soy milk but the girl at the counter said that they do not offer soy milk. The latte was very tasty as well as the cinnamon roll, which was heated up before it was served. The cafe has a nice retro aura and was nice and cozy. Would definitely go again.
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
Stopped here for a bit to read and enjoyed a delicious lavender tea and cinnamon roll. I love the decor here! The back room feels like a 70s style cozy living room. I do not normally care for the taste of lavender but I was curious to try it as a tea and it was amazing.
google avatar

Aleah H.

Yelp
I come here for the cinnamon rolls... butttttt it's also a great place to study with great teas, cold brews, and lattes. The Bean is one of my favorite coffee shops in Auburn mainly because of the food. They have breakfast casseroles, French toast, brownies, muffins, etc. It's very spacious on the inside and it's perfect for studying alone or with a group of friends.
google avatar

Liliana A.

Yelp
It is a cute funky atmosphere. I had de avocado toast which was good. The salsa tasted store bought but the bread was really good. Tasted the French toast. The presentation was pretty but it was extremely soggy on the center. Now the so so Review is actually for the blueberry muffin I ordered to go. It was filled with blue berries which I loved but it was soooo hard and dry. I do not kid. It lacked airy sponge like feel. It was dry and a bit chewy. I wished I could have had it there to let someone now and have the opportunity to try another one. Might not go back.
google avatar

Dale M.

Yelp
Nice staff and atmosphere! They made me a white chocolate latte and next time I'll make sure to grab a cinnamon roll, too!

Chase H.

Yelp
It feels a little off. Coffee was good, and the cashier was very nice! She answered my questions and made exactly what I was hoping for. Wifi policy is a odd- a little blunt, and inhospitable. It's a coffee shop so I understand the need for the policy, but...
google avatar

Caleigh O.

Yelp
I love the Bean! It's my go to coffee shop in Auburn. I always get a cappuccino with a little chocolate (because I'm weird) and they do it the best!! I'm not a big cinnamon roll fan, but I can inhale one of theirs easily!!! Also, for late night study sessions, I always get an espresso beverage with a slice of their chocolate peanut butter pie!!!

Gail D.

Yelp
Do not request a refill after leaving a generous tip at The Bean! Save that money for another cup. The gentleman I asked for a refill gave an extremely rude reply. My friend who was with me was the first to remark that he needs to work on not being rude. She owns a local restaurant, so we plan to visit her place rather than The Bean.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Cutest coffee shop in Auburn! I visited this place when it first opened summer 2015 and met the owner. She is a nice lady who had a dream to have a clean place without alcohol the kids could hangout that wasn't on campus and had a chill vibe. Well congrats!! Looks like your dream came true! I'm glad to see this business thriving. It's has a retro feel with vinyl records, decor found from local estate and antique sales and some of the furniture has even been donated. I don't remember what I ordered it was so unique and delicious. Extensive coffee house menu with baked goods and ice cream. Cute place to meet friends to review a study guide and grab a coffee and a snack!
google avatar

Adriana L.

Yelp
I had good coffee. I would study here. The ambiance is cute and vintage and internet is fast. I didn't love the cinnamon rolls but I can see why people do. Overall, cute place.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
Great spot for coffee in Auburn. We walked over on a Saturday. We tried their famous cinnamon roll and a breakfast casserole along with an americano. Staff was pleasant and efficient. Our kids loved the board games in the dining area. Cute retro decor.
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
coffee here isn't the best but I am a huge fan of the pies, cinnamon rolls and other food options. The owners are super sweet and the design/theme of the shop is adorable. You can even play records.
google avatar

Myracle D.

Yelp
I love the new location! It is very cozy with a lot of seating for studying! The owners and employees were very helpful and friendly! I will definitely be back!!

G M.

Yelp
Love love love this coffee shop! The staff are very well trained and are confident with the menu. They have all the answers to your questions. Coffee brew is fantastic from plain black coffee to iced tea lattes, everything is amazing. The retro atmosphere is a nice, relaxing vibe to sit down and enjoy your coffee with. I always dress up to go there because I love matching the vibe of the shop lol. There's plenty of room/tables/seats/couches/etc. I like that you can chose to use their glassware or to-go cups rather than just disposable to-go cups. Highly recommend. The owner is almost always there too which is nice. They're very friendly, and their hours are great!
google avatar

Keaton R.

Yelp
Great place. I've been in Auburn for 4 years now and just went here for the first time. I am glad just found this place. Great service, great atmosphere, and fantastic coffee. Not a better way to start a morning.

Gracie M.

Yelp
Tex mex casserole was okay. Even though it was microwaved. I got a cold brew and it had real sugar in the bottom. Not a syrup sugar. Regular crystal sugar.
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
Great place! It had the perfect coffee house vibe that you are looking for. It's a great place to study, do work, or just grab a cup coffee. Their desserts are great as well. My favorite is the cinnamon roll. The staff is really friendly and always gets the orders right. They are fast to make your order as well. The location isn't the greatest but it is worth it for their coffee and desserts!
google avatar

N. Cole J.

Yelp
I had the waffle and ice cream dish! I'll be back regularly! It was everything I was craving
google avatar

Cierra R.

Yelp
Completely adorable coffee shop with a vintage vibe. I had a white chocolate mocha and a warm, homemade, cinnamon roll! A must visit coffee/dessert stop while you're in Auburn!
google avatar

Brantli D.

Yelp
Nice family owned business always so kind, accurate, and helpful. Amazing coffee and breakfast. Great location and quick service. Could not recommend this place more! The most home-y vibe and great atmosphere. Do yourself a favor and try this!!

Olivia F.

Yelp
Ordered a whole cake for a party and it was amazing will continue to come here! Was ready on time and got a lot of good reviews on it
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee and treats. We enjoyed hot coffee, a latte and a few iced coffees. We also had both their gelato and the cinnamon rolls! Everything was delicious and the service is friendly but not fast.

Yelp
Visiting from the west coast I was happy to see the Auburn area has many more coffee shops than when I lived here 5 years ago. I tried The Bean at the suggestion of a friend and loved the cute atmosphere and friendly baristas. This is the kind of spot I missed when I lived here. At that time "meeting for coffee" didn't seem to be a thing here, but now at The Bean you could definitely do that. The pastries looked delicious, my kids tried the cinnamon roll and my bite was good. I tried their signature secret latte and got it half sweetness. I don't like my drinks too sweet and even half sweet was pretty sweet, but it was good.
