Chef David Chang Will Raise Money for the Southern Smoke Foundation on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ - Eater Houston

"The Bearded Baker, a cookie shop originally operated by Allen Hursig out of his Houston-area home kitchen, will be opening a brick and mortar location in the Heights later this month. Hursig, who was previously an oil and gas landman, started the bakery in 2016 after leaving his career at Conoco-Phillips. His elaborate iced cookies, personal-sized cakes and scones landed him the position of first runner up in the Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge in 2019. His bakeshop will be take out and curbside only." - Brittanie Shey

The shop is clean and has a very nice aesthetic—visually appealing and well put together. However, my experience with their custom ordering process was disappointing. I initially called and spoke with someone who told me that they only needed about two weeks’ notice for custom cookie orders. Based on that, I submitted my request four weeks in advance of my event, thinking I was well ahead of the game. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. It took about a week just to get a response via email, and then I was told that even four weeks wasn’t enough time, which felt inconsistent and unprofessional. There doesn't seem to be a clear or reliable method for handling custom orders, which is frustrating when you're trying to plan for a special occasion. In the end, I didn’t move forward with the custom order. I went into the shop and purchased one of their pre-designed cookies, but it melted in the car almost immediately, which raises concerns about the durability of their $90-per-dozen custom cookies, especially in Houston heat. I also tried the macarons, which were unfortunately a miss. The filling tasted more like plain whipped cream than a flavored or textured center, which was underwhelming. That said, the chocolate cake was excellent—moist, rich, and full of flavor. If I return, it will be for that cake alone.

Google
These cookies were the cherry on top for a baby shower I was hosting. Allan did a wonderful job and the details on each cookie were extraordinary and so skillful! Allan was so kind and professional and made the ordering process very easy. Not only were they beautiful but they were so delicious and decadent as well. Highly recommend for any event! Thank you so much for your hard work and talents!

Stopped by The Bearded Baker 🍪🧔‍♂️ and was charmed by the vibe! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting—perfect for a sweet treat stop. They offer a wide variety of unique flavors to choose from, which definitely piqued my curiosity 🌈🍫. As for the cookies? Well, they were just…cookies 🤷‍♀️. Nothing about the flavor stood out to me, other than the novelty of the options themselves. It’s like they’re the “hipster” of cookies—looks great, but the substance is just okay 🤔🍪.

Google
The cookies were good, but the customer service left a lot to be desired. While I was in the middle of paying, the employee stepped away for a moment, and during that time, my baby accidentally touched the screen, which caused a pop-up saying “transaction cancelled.” As I reached to take the cookies from her hand, she quickly pulled her hand back and said, “Transaction cancelled, try again,” in a rude and accusatory tone. It was an unnecessary reaction, especially given the situation — I was clearly trying to pay, with a baby in my arms. The way she handled it made me feel disrespected and judged. I hope management addresses this, because customer service is just as important as the product itself.

Google
Sudden sweet tooth made us stop by and I was not disappointed. I got myself a chocolate chip cookie & oatmeal with pecan cookie - both delicious! Husband got one of those small refrigerated cakes they have at the front and he said he’d give it a 3/5. Grabbed some free doggo treats on the way out and both of my pups loved them!

Google
Bearded Baker did an excellent job creating cookies for a surprise engagement party. Easy to work with and coordinate pickup. The cookies themselves were beautiful and tasted SO GOOD. I don’t usually like sugar cookies, but these are excellent. A lot of times you get decorative cookies and they look pretty but taste like cardboard. These were soft and delicious and beautiful!

Google
The cookies, brownie, and oatmeal cream pie were all good, but it was almost $20. Wild. The oatmeal cream pie was the star at $7. The texture was great. I wish the selection was wider and the prices were more reasonable. It was good, but I won’t be back.

Google
For my baby shower, my husband ordered 3 dozen cookies with royal icing with the theme of woodland animals. The Bearded Baker was everything we could have hoped for. The cookies were AMAZING!!! the design was fabulous, the cookies were fresh and delicious and everything was right on time. Worth every penny. My guests were amazed at the quality and I was on cloud nine with the way they turned out. THANK YOU Bearded Baker!!!

Yelp
The Bearded Baker is a bakery located in the Heights and specializes in meticulously designed sugar cookies. While their selection of baked goods is limited and on the smaller range of offerings, they excel in what they do--cookies. The decorated sugar cookies are one of the best I have ever had! I have had decorated sugar cookies at different birthdays and bakeries, but theirs is nothing like the ones I have had. The cookie itself is soft, and the icing on top is not too overwhelmingly sweet and melts in your mouth. Although I had one of their random cookies on the shelf, I also saw that they had more intricate designs on special orders. I also got the reese's oatmeal cream pies, as well, and it was soft and light. The parking in the plaza is small, but the plaza was not busy during the day, which made parking a bit easier. Overall, I would say they have amazing cookies, and I thoroughly enjoy their decorated sugar cookies. If calories weren't a thing, I could eat a dozen of them in one sitting.

Yelp
I had to up my review because that Reese's oatmeal cream pie was amazing. I'm not a peanut butter fan but I got it for my husband and once I tried that delicate delicious peanut butter flavored cream I almost cried. Solid.

Yelp
I pass by almost every day on my way home and have always wanted to try their desserts. I didn't realize it's mostly sugar cookies, which are a great if you want to customize designs for parties. I really enjoyed their oatmeal cream pies - regular and Reese's. You can see the vanilla bean in the regular whip, and the Reese's whip is very peanut buttery. I thought the oatmeal cookie itself was delicious, esp cause of all the pecans in it. The cookie is crisp on the outside and chewy in the center. My friend is a fan of pumpkin, so she had the pumpkin cakelette. It's actually a white cake with pumpkin frosting, which wasn't what she was expecting. I don't really like sugar cookies, but I'd come back for their oatmeal cream pies even though they're a little on the pricier side. The place was very clean inside. There's a small 2-person table seating right outside the doors. There's a small parking lot they share with other places.

Yelp
Was absolutely amazing and it met all of my expectations as far as with a buttered brown chocolate chip cookie!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I got the Dark Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Swiss Meringue Buttercream, the service was good as far as with friendliness. The bakery was very empty, but then carry out was quick!

Yelp
I ordered custom cookies for my sister baby shower. The ordering process was super easy, Allan was a pleasure to work with. They communication was super straightforward and very accommodating. I ordered around 3 dozen cookies and all of the design and colors turned out the way I wanted it. The cookies were a huge hit - everyone LOVED the cookies!! Not going to lie based off my experiences with sugar cookies they tend to be stale. But with The bearded baker, the cookies turned out super soft, not too sweet, the icing wasn't too hard to bite through. You can even see the vanilla beans in the cookies!!! I would highly recommend them for custom sugar cookies, they definitely are going to be my go to going forward for sugar cookies!!

Yelp
Such a beautiful bakery! Boyfriend and I stopped in for a little birthday treat and we're greeted right away. the display case was filled with mini cakes, brownies, sugar cookies, and even macarons. We decided to get a brownie and a Texas shaped sugar cookie. Both were good ! The cookie however was super sweet in my opinion. Overall I enjoyed my experience and would come again. We were also gifted dog treats for our pups at home. THEY LOVED THEIR TREATS

Yelp
This is a beautiful cookie shop with a baker who was featured on the Food Network! We just happened to drive by this place and decided to pop in on a whim, and we were greeted by friendly staff. We got one Oatmeal Pecan Raisin cookie, one Brown Butter Chocolate Chip cookie, and one brownie. They had some super cute Houston Astros themed cookies too that we didn't get to try. All the treats we purchased were delicious, chocolatey, and full of flavor. I did dock down a star, however, as it was a tad too sweet for my preference. Would return to try their sugar cookies.

Yelp
I am VERY satisfied with this latest order! I'm a repeat customer. Tasty, Pretty cookies and good customer service. Thank you

Vannessa T.

Yelp
Nuts! Just in case someone is allergic to nuts or doesn't particularly like nuts in their cookies and brownies, here's a heads up. Most of their items contain nuts. I'm not really a fan of nuts so that was a little bit of a downer. Everything looked good. Chocolate chip cookie without nuts was good but a teensy bit salty, nothing that would make it unedible just a bit saltier than you'd expect a cookie to be. The oatmeal cream pie was delicious. Oatmeal cookie was super good, even with the nuts in there, and the cream wasn't overwhelming. All around a good cookie. I'd recommend the oatmeal cream pies but not sure if I'd come back for the other cookies.

Yelp
Great oatmeal cream pies! Try to make it a weekly treat to myself. Great service as well

Yelp
Bought two small caKeely's. The chocolate with Oreo cookie frosting was very good. The vanilla cake with frosting and sprinkles was very dry. My 2-year old granddaughter almost choked on it. These cakelets cost $8 each and they should be fresh not old. Won't go back!
google avatar

Yelp
All day long and yesterday I would buy their amazing homemade oatmeal cream pies! Nothing compares!

Yelp
I have ordered custom sugar cookies from The Bearded Baker two years in a row for my kid's themed birthday parties and they never disappoint. Allan (aka The Bearded Baker) is incredibly talented and creates amazing cookies to match the themes each time. Last year we had Super Mario and this year 2 Fast 2 Furious. I admit that the cookies are on the more pricy side and I did have to pay extra for the individual packaging, but IMO the quality of these cookies justifies the pricing. Not to mention that our party guests are always extremely impressed by them. If you want good quality custom sugar cookies, I definitely recommend checking them out.
google avatar

Yelp
I have envied Austin for years because of all the adorable cookie designs available to them at Hayleycakes, and now Houston finally has their own option. They have both regular desserts and the elaborately decorated cookies - I'm waiting for an excuse to throw a party and order a batch. I did grab one of the smaller boxes for Father's Day and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the cookies. Usually the royal icing type designs are all style and no substance, and these were actually soft and had a good flavor.
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
The cookies are cool! They look good. They taste good. The thing stoping this from being 5 stars for me was price + quality. Like I said they were good and creative. We enjoyed our cookies!
google avatar

Nikki W.

Yelp
The best chocolate chip cookies in Houston. This is the cookie for those that like buttery, salty sweet cookies. Also, great for ppl that aren't s fan of the oversized doughy undercooked fat cookie trend.

Yelp
The moment you walk in your nose is greeted by the amazing smells of freshly baked cookies at the bearded baker! My partner and I had such a nice experience here, we even got to meet the owner himself, such a cool guy! And the cookies absolutely delicious! My partner and I are big cookie connoisseurs and we rate this place and the cookies a 10! If you haven't tried yet, I definitely recommend you do!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try the Bearded Baker and finally got to swing by this past weekend. I got a little bit of everything cause I couldn't decide on what I wanted-brown sugar choc chip cookies (with and without pecans), oatmeal raisin cookie, oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, creme brûlée macarons, and a king cake bundlette. My favorite were the brown sugar choc chip cookies with pecans while my sister liked the ones without and my fiancée liked the oatmeal ones the best. There is something for everyone here and the customer service is great.

Yelp
We walked over while waiting for our Hando (the restaurant next door) and decided to get a snack. This is one of those moments when you stumbled on your favorite bakery. Or bakery to scratch that "oatmeal cookie/pie" itch. I got the mini oatmeal cream pie and my partner got Yum Yum cookie. The mini oatmeal cream pie was so flavorful (beyond just sweet). The cream on the inside tasted like Italian buttercream? It was light and sweet. TLDR; went in while waiting for Hando, would come back for the oatmeal cookies any day!

Yelp
Wow!! We first saw Allan on The Food Network and were so excited to find him on Facebook and see he was opening a bakery! I waited patiently for the bakery to open and FINALLY was able to stop by this morning. I got one of each type of king cake (yum!) and 2 brown butter chocolate chip cookies (also yum!). The lady helping me was extremely nice and personable! I love all the treats we got and cannot wait to come back to try some more!!
google avatar

Tiffini D.

Yelp
Is this the best cookie in Houston?! I tried the brown butter chocolate chip and the oatmeal pecan chocolate chip and both were amazing! Soft, buttery and full of chips, I couldn't decide which was my favorite. I guess I have to get one of each when I'm in the area! The staff was fun and the shop spectacularly clean. Definitely a must try.

Yelp
I came here a few minutes ago with my family and we got a candy corn shaped sugar cookie and a pumpkin spice cookie the service was great, super friendly and the cookies were beyond amazing. Everything is perfectly decorated please support this great local business and stop by. You won't regret it. This business is cute and has a great environment for families. Please consider stopping by. Btw they also have delicious coffee.

Yelp
*Chef's kiss* Very exciting to have another bakery option in the area! I am a sucker for iced sugar cookies so I can tell that I am in for a treat here. Today is their grand opening so they only had a small selection of sweets available when I popped by this morning (they are getting a bunch ready for the grand opening party), but everything I tried was excellent. My favorite was the iced sugar cookie - the nice cashier told me they will have different shapes/designs available depending on the season. I also tried the gingerbread (so soft and gingery) and the brown butter chocolate chip (rich and decadent). As another reviewer noted, the cookies cost a pretty penny, about $3 - $4 each, but I certainly think they are worth it for a special treat or a special occasion. They also have coffee, small cakes called cakelettes, and macarons on offer. I will most certainly be back to get my hands on more of their awesome cookies! Plenty of parking so getting your sweet fix is super easy.

Yelp
The iced sugar cookies are a work of art, and the attention to detail is immaculate. On our first visit here, I got the oatmeal pecan chocolate chip, and my husband the sugar cookie. We both enjoyed our cookies and would definitely drop by again to try all the other creations. Although I don't know that I'd be able to eat an iced sugar cookie - they're just so beautiful! Also, the free doggy treat is the cherry on top for us. Our dog loved it as well, and he's quite picky about cookie treats. There was no hesitation to gobble it up.

Yelp
Delicious! A tad pricy but the flavors and textures are amazing. Not as much a sit down and eat place. More grab and go.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely LOVED these cookies that my friends ordered for my bachelorette in Fredericksburg, Texas. The Bearded Baker put together the perfect mix of wine and 'naughty' -themed sugar cookies for our weekend in the Texas wine country, they are so fun and look almost too good to eat. Besides the fantastic decoration and design, they are absolutely delicious and I will definitely be ordering from The Bearded Baker for my events in future!

Yelp
Finally got to stop by and try this new local Bakery. Everyone was super friendly and it was a great pleasure chatting with them. We got One of almost everything: Chocolate chip Pecan Chocolate chip Oatmeal Meal Raisin Pecan Oatmeal Chocolate chip Oatmeal Sandwich All items are made with real butter, he uses Brown Butter which is just skillet cooked butter until it turns brown indicating the absence of water. Unsure this added anything to the over taste of the cookies, but I can tell you this the fact that he uses real butter is a SUPER plus in my book. Nothing like baking with real butter! My favorite ended being the Oatmeal Raisin Pecan. This one had the most balance of all the cookies. The Chocolate chip were bordering on being too sweet, almost no flavor except for sugar. Yes I know cookies are sweet, but Like to taste the cookie base, the chocolate chip, and the pecans not just sugar. The crème in the Oatmeal Sandwich was almost like a marshmallow base, I had feared it would be straight up icing, so was pleased when it wasn't. Most cookies are in the $3 each range. With high quality ingredients comes a bigger price point. See: real butter. Fresh Baked throughout the day! Closed on Mon and Tues.

Yelp
Hands down the most delicious custom sugar cookies I've ever ordered! They were large and flavorful and not to mention BEAUTIFUL. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is due to the price point. In my opinion it's quite steep compared to other similar business, but I would still purchase again due to the quality.
google avatar

Jackie L.

Yelp
I absolutely love that the Bearded Baker has opened up a shop in the Heights and even better it has ample parking. For years I have loved watching his detailed cookie designs get more elaborate. It's hard to want to eat something that is so beautiful but when they taste as good as these, it's worth it. Do yourself a favor and splurge on these delectable bites. I recommend the brown butter chocolate chip cookie.
google avatar

Ivonne B.

Yelp
These were honestly some if not one of the best cookies I've ever had. The frosting was soft and just the right amount of sugar. I loved the richness of the frosting and how soft and chewy the cookie was. I would definitely go buy more baked deliciousness from this bakery! Obviously you can see the detail in the design and I would say that's worth the cost of $3 or $4 per cookie they're very well made.

Yelp
THANKS ALOT!!! Thanks to your company a surprise party tomorrow will not have cookies for the desserts! I'm so frustrated. Sent in a customization order for some cookies almost a week ago and I never got a response, when I finally did they were confirming things that were in my order form. I sent into more emails because I still had yet to get a response and it was a day out from the day. I needed the delivery for the cookies ready. I need up calling tonight just to find out that they were never working on my cookies. They were never going to respond to the order form in general because their notice is two weeks in advance for custom cookies and I literally was like what the hell why wouldn't she just respond saying that you needed two weeks in advance??????? all they had to do was respond to my email, letting me know that I needed to find somewhere else so completely disorganized and unprofessional! Thanks for this company is a surprise party tomorrow will not have desserts!

Yelp
Fantastic! The cookies are beautiful and DELICIOUS. We have ordered for corporate events as well as just for fun, the quality and service have been terrific. Don't miss out on all the amazing treats The Bearded Baker makes. I had the brownie last time and it was to die for!!! The decorated cookies taste amazing also! We will be ordering again and again
google avatar

Francesco C.

Yelp
Lots of the photos posted are of their cookies, but the BROWNIES ARE AMAZING! Probably the best I've ever had - for real.

Tonya C.

Yelp
The iced sugar cookie was AMAZING! The cookie was soft, but strong enough to hold the icing. The flavor was fantastic. I also tried the pumpkin spice, which was good, but I love an iced sugar cookie, so that's always where my loyalty will be. The oatmeal cream pie was great. The cookie was soft and chewy, and the filling was the perfect pairing for the cookie - more buttery than sweet
google avatar

Leila E.

Yelp
These cookies are amazing! The sugar cookies are perfectly decorated and the icing is not hard or overly sweet, however these cookies do cost around $5 each which is a tad steep in my mind. I'll likely be coming back to try some more delicious treats!
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
I would say this is slightly overrated. I had the Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Pecan cookie and a sugar cookie. Don't get me wrong; they were good. They were not $3.50/$3.00 each good. The service was excellent though.

Caddie C.

Yelp
Fabulous cookies and customer service. I stopped by to grab cookies for guests I was hosting and they were fully stocked with fresh treats. The owner was there an greeted me and the staff members were extremely kind. The cookies were unique and tasted great! I would recommend the cream pies, iced sugar and sprinkled cookies. Go check this place out!
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
I stopped in to get a last minute treat for Valentine's Day. They had really cute options and the person working was extremely friendly and kind. In my opinion, the shop is a little pricey for cookies but the quality was very high. The cookies not only look good but taste good as well. I will definitely be back for special occasions due to the unique designs and good quality.
google avatar

Moses D.

Yelp
I will start by saying this place has some amazing macaroons. I had the Valentine's Day flavor and it was so good. As for the cookies; I'm sorry but it's not a big deal. The flavors where very much what you could find at any cookie shop or grocery store. The staff is super nice and my doggy did love the doggie cookie. I might stop by for more of the doggy cookies if I'm in the area. Over all this was a bit of a let down.
google avatar

McKenna M.

Yelp
Um, holy shit. I'm sorry for the language (no I'm not) but this just became my new favorite bake shop after the first bite I took of the perfectly soft and beautifully iced sugar cookie I just picked up quite literally 5 minutes ago. My biggest problem with most decorated sugar cookies is the usually hard royal icing with no other flavor than artificial almond extract - these are the exact opposite. Yes people, they're $4 each but in my opinion the quality is more than worth it. I also tried the oatmeal cream pie and the swiss meringue buttercream that filled the cookies was to die for. Perfectly fluffy with just a hint of sweetness. I'll be back soon, and for every birthday and special occasion. It should also be noted that the customer service is extremely above par as well! Thanks, Bearded Baker!
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
The cookies were great, and the icing was done very well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the price. At over $3 a cookie, most people probably aren't gonna make this a common stop for treat night. It's definitely a place you order things for special occasions, and that might be their target consumer to begin with. Baby showers, office parties, etc. Those would be great events for this place. Since I have a lot of employees, I'll probably get the next event some cookies.

R P.

Yelp
$3.50 for a very average sized cookie that tastes half a notch above nestle tollhouse break and bake. Pass.

Larry D.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood, hate it took me so long to go in! Beautiful and tasty pastries! Cannot wait to order a cake!

Ivy S.

Yelp
Just stopped in on a whim to see what this place was about. We were greeted in the parking lot with a puppy friendly cookie which I thought was just the sweetest. Inside, you'll find gourmet style baked desserts such as cookies, cakes and macaroons. I saw that they also do beautiful custom cake and cookie orders as well. I purchased a brownie with sea salt and it was quite easily the best brownie I've ever had. I'd highly recommend stopping in and supporting this local establishment.

L G.

Yelp
Stopped by earlier today to check out the grand opening. It was my second time stopping by. The first time I visited over a week ago and they only had cookies. I tried one of their oatmeal cookies and it was excellent. Today they had expanded the offerings to include brownies, cakelettes and macaroons. I decided to try the brownie. It was one of the best brownies I have had. Very moist, chewy and fudgy the way I like them. As a couple of other posters have noted the prices can be a bit steep even for the heights. $3 for a well made cookie at a craft bakery is not unheard of but $6 for a walnut brownie is definitely on the high end. I wanted to try one of the cakelettes but I couldn't justify paying $30 for a such small cake. It was like 3-4 inches and diameter and maybe the same in height. I thought that price was way over the top and I have been to plenty of high end artisan bakeries all over the country including places like NY and SF. Price aside, everything here seems very high quality and they obviously have great attention to detail. I wish them luck and hope they are successful.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I purchased a variety of their cookies around Valentine's Day and they were all delicious! Though the main reason I stopped by the store was to ask if they took pre-orders for cookies that were not the custom sugar cookies. The woman behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. She handed me the owner's business card and suggested I email him to ask, which I did, although I never received a response. Realizing emails often go to spam, I called the store about a week later to inquire about placing an order in advance. The person who answered said they normally don't take advance orders (I guess only for the sugar cookies?); however, he did ask when I needed them and said they could help. I indicated I didn't have a date in mind since my plan was to place orders throughout the year for my job. The employee then said if I "would just cooperate" they would help me. After that remark, I thanked him for his time and hung up. The Bearded Baker is a great addition to the the Heights and the type of store I love to have in the area. The cookies are great, but after my recent experience, I won't be back.
