I travel to Providence every couple months for a week at a time for work. Started last year, and have been trying a different hotel in the area each time, trying to find my "place". Well let's just say I found it, the Beatrice is the best hotel in Providence, period, end of story. Here's why:
Let's start with what's already been said, the building is gorgeous. They brilliantly created a hotel lobby around what used to be the alley between two the hotel and an office building. A little hard to articulate, but it's now stunning space with soaring ceilings, gorgeous hanging glass fixtures, and high end decor. Very nice to walk into.
I stayed in a Grand room which the website says is one click above a standard one. These rooms are beautiful but also SMART with little touches. The bidet funtion on the toilet and heated toilet seat). The little knob in the bathroom that's actually a volume for the TV (was nice to hear the news in the morning while showering). The shower head that sprays this incredibly fine mist, but more than enough of it (other settings too if you prefer a standard stream, but the mist was awesome). All in tandem with perfectly functioning legacy features (cold A/C, mini fridge, espresso maker... you heard me). The bedding is perfect, plush but not too plush, and the pillows are perfection. Then the room aesthetics. Soaring windows, herringbone hardwood floors and marble bathroom tile. Oh, and the grand rooms are big. Real big.
And then there's the people. Sydney at the front desk was warm, genuine but polished and professional, exactly what you want in a check-in experience after 16 hours of travel. She was friendly with each passing of the front desk throughout the week, I enjoyed chatting with her each time. Also, the gentleman at Valet (tall, muscular caucasian guy, got his name but am blanking it). Might be the hardest working valet guy I've ever come across, and a VERY nice guy who I enjoyed chatting with each day. All the folks were great, these folks just really stood out and I hope they are recognized.
A few other notes before I wrap up:
- The location is perfect if you want the downtown, walk around vibe. I was flabbergasted by the number of restaurants withing a couple blocks.
- If you don't feel like walking, the hotel restaurant Bellini is very good. High end Italian in a fairly formal environment, but the folks are mostly great. I say mostly because there was a manager there (older, shorter man with dark hair) who was uptreating the staff very poorly, downright unprofessional and rude, I didn't appreciate it. I mentioned to one of the staff I was going to confront him for his insanely unacceptable treatment of his staff, and I was told that would only make it worse for them. I left large tips to offset but who is this awful person? My next trip, if he's there, I'll turn around and eat elsewhere so I don't have to be witness to this ancient, hierachiel treatment of employees. Shame on that man, he's very lucky I'm a reasonable person, I wish I were not.
Thank you to The Beatrice, I'll see you in a couple months... and every couple months after that, you are now my place. PS - I am a titanium Marriott Bonvot member who gets all the usual perks there, and I will bypass them all when in Providence to stay at the Beatrice.
