Stunning 19th-century landmark hotel with ornate atrium

"When a hotel opens in New York, it’s not uncommon for locals to barely bat an eye. This is, after all, a city crawling with them—big, small, modern, classic. It takes an exceptional property to capture the collective consciousness, which is exactly what happened in 2016, when The Beekman opened. The landmark was built in the 1880s with a nine-story, glass-ceiling atrium, but throughout the past century, the atrium had been covered up as the building functioned as just another office. Now the glass skylight soars once again above the lobby’s Art Deco bar where New Yorkers flock—come 6 p.m., it’s nearly impossible to find a free bar stool. The rooms all have vintage furnishings, with dark wood floors and distressed leather headboards: comfortable but not so much so that you don’t want to leave and miss out on everything happening around you. So many hotels like to say they’ve made the neighborhood, but in the case of the Beekman, it’s actually true." - Jessica Sulima

"Hard to believe an architectural gem of the Beekman’s stature went neglected for so many years, but we’re happy to report that it’s back in business. The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, to give it its full name, is an Old New York original, an 1881-vintage skyscraper from the days when a skyscraper meant nine stories of terraced red brick. And if the silhouette doesn’t convince you of its landmark status, a glance upwards surely will, as you walk across the towering central atrium with its pyramidal glass skylight." - Mark Fedeli

"Gothic elegance and old-world charm collide at The Beekman, and it’s practically tailor-made for Doechii’s avant-garde style. With its soaring atrium, hidden nooks, and a bit of a haunted allure, this hotel mirrors the same raw intensity and mystery that infuses her music. A place where drama isn’t just a vibe, it’s the mood. Here, the singer-songwriter can retreat from the flashing lights and slip into something as bold and layered as her art." - Ty Gaskins

"Since its August 2016 opening, the fashion set have flocked here: it hosted Valentino’s Pre-Fall 2017 show and Billy Reid’s Fall 2017 menswear collection, and even before the hotel debuted, the Maison Martin Margiela x H&M launch party took place on the premises. Comfortable rooms feature velvet and leather furnishings, and the rooftop’s wisteria-adorned terrace has become one of downtown’s most sought-after reservations. Before you leave, I always stop for a photo of the nine-story Victorian atrium—declared a New York landmark in 2024." - Nicole Kliest, Christina Liao

"A haven where history intertwines with modern elegance, this is a go-to spot for many professionals seeking a sanctuary from the conventional office grind. The breathtaking atrium feels like a time capsule, a cozy coffee shop in the lobby fuels a productive day, and the hum of fellow remote workers gives the space a singular, energizing character." - The MICHELIN Guide
