13 Stellar Beer Bars to Hit in Portland | Eater Portland

"More than anything, Beer Mongers feels like the decked-out garage of a serious beer nerd. The walls are covered by coolers, and a modest bar seats just a few for the occasionally rare and always interesting beers on tap — high tables make up the rest of the seating. If there’s something out of place on the menu, say a $8 pint of Miller, it’s generally worth trying; it might not always be what it initially seems, but something secret and delicious. Also, the Mongers’ homey vibe is help by often being open on holidays for family dinners." - Alex Frane

Google
A great beer bar with a vary solid selection of beers on tap. Bonus selection of beers in coolers (bottles and cans) $2 corkage fee. Pretty busy on a Thursday night. Indoor and outdoor seating (covered tent) and a food truck out front. On street parking only.

Google
I've been going to this place since the week they opened, and let me tell you, it's a real gem. World class beer bar. Not only are there great beers both on tap and in the cooler, but they carry other great beverages like cider, kombucha, and non-alcoholic options. I love that you can bring your own food in if you want. The owner has really made an effort to make this a true community bar. Truly a special place that has stood the test of time. Check it out!

Google
So friendly and tons of choices in bottles/cans! Excellent choice in music.

Google
The NEW place is great! Way more space, outdoor seating, and regular events. Still the same great selection of to-go, and always a carefully curated lil tap list. We've been patrons since they opened and have even done many podcasts from there over the years. Good spot for Timbers fans too! They're still growing into the new spot and have more things planned. Can't wait! For more about this craft beer location and others listen to The Brew Happy Show weekly podcast!

Google
Staff is so nice and helpful. Have a great beer selection plus a solid cider and seltzer fridge for those who don't drink beer (me). They have the coolest food pop ups so be sure to check out their event calendar!

Google
Nice location for beer selection. Hockey on TV, can't complain... several taps including one cask and a large bottle/can selection. Friendly staff, enjoyable atmosphere.

Google
Great curated tap & bottle collection. Main bartender guy can really be hit or miss as far as attitude….sometimes downright angry in a road ragey kinda way, other times super nice. Too cliquey for me, really miss Apex

Andrew Ayers

Google
A nice selection of beers that doesn’t show up in many other bottle shops. Ample seating outside. My only complaint is that the beer coolers seem a bit dingy. The doors have a lot of condensation and film on them, so in some places, you can’t even see what’s inside without opening the door. Beers were great, but the coolers make the shopping experience less appealing.

Yelp
What a great place to spend Thanksgiving.. Went with some friends that go there every year and it just might be my new Thanksgiving spot.. they have a great spread of pot luck coming thru all day.. the staff is fantastic and the crowd is amazing!! Thank you for a fun filled day leaving fat and happy...and my Cowboys WON!!!!

Yelp
Awesome selection, my favorite place for hard to find brews!! Their tap selections and patio space are also fantastic.

Yelp
They've moved, only about a block. to a bigger space. That's better, right? The old space was small and cozy. The new space is bigger and that's good, just not familiar. Same friendly staff and vibe, Would have liked an increase in taps and an increase in cooler space, Got neither, and the coolers now more randomly organized, some preference to beer style, but also clusters of a brewer's work. A little confusing. I would like to see the price on the can/bottle, and not have to look at the smallish print on the shelf. Glad the beermonger abides. Soon to reach is 5,000th consecutive day of business.

Yelp
Came here twice to pick up some brew. You can sit down and enjoy or take them to go. This place has a HUGE variety that seems endless. They have very helpful staff and are happy to answer your questions or if you're looking for something specific. To all my beer enthusiasts, this place is a must.

Yelp
Incredibly kind service, great selection, amazing events. Anyone claiming this place to be pretentious isn't exactly understanding what pretentious means when it comes to craft beer.

Lindsey T.

Yelp
This is a business we've tried to keep up with for over fifteen years.. but this place is as pretentious as Portland craft beer gets now.
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
This is my favorite bottle shop in Portland. I spend way too much money here. I say I'm just going to get a couple of beers and I leave with 20. Great selection! They are consistently getting new inventory, and it's not just Oregon beers, but they get craft beers from some of the best breweries in the country. I have picked up Tripping Animals, Other Half, Burial, Bearded Iris, Humble Sea, Alvarado Street, and Drekker just to name a couple of outside of Oregon breweries. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They really seem to just enjoy good beer no frills. Prices are always very fair, especially for the quality. I absolutely cannot be in the area without stopping by.

Yelp
Beer Lovers Unite! Beermongers is a great place for beer lovers to try many beers in one place. Whether it's off of their tap list of about 15 beers that is kept fresh, or the hundreds of cans and bottles kept in their coolers, you can find anything that you like here. More of an Irish pub vibe here, they support the Timbers, and the place is not fancy. They make up for it in friendliness, and are only too happy to answer any questions about a beer. I stopped here and my Portland friend's buddy took us on a "tour" of West Coast IPAs and more by selecting fresh cans from the fridge. Had a great time sampling beers at this friendly place.

Yelp
Did you bring an empty bladder and a wallet full of cash? You are going to need both while visiting BeerMongers! I was lucky enough to visit this beer bar on a night they hold their "Bottle Sharing" between fellow beer geeks. Their tap list was very diverse with all different breweries and styles down the line. What impressed me the most (and why they deserve a 5 Star Rating) was their bottle selection. They are both for on-site consumption and take away. I spent most of my time here going over each bottle and deciding which brews to take away. If I lived in Portland, I would be in this beer bar multiple times a week to see their rotating tap list offerings and take away beer. If you are in Portland and need a new place to go for craft beer, check out The Beermongers!

Yelp
Tap selection is always solid. Can't go wrong picking a beer from the fridges. Owner and staff are laid back and friendly.

Carter W.

Yelp
Maybe it's been a slow move from their OG location but Mongers 2.0 is a disappointing rendition of its new self. Beer selection is considerably reduced and less diverse and many of the cans have been on the shelf for longer than you'd like. I've noticed the staff isn't all that friendly or warm too (shoutout to Belmont and Wildwood for 5* customer service). Maybe as they grow into their space things will normalize but this has been a disappointing transition for a previously regular customer.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
If you are looking to escape the rain or just spend a beautiful day in Portland drinking beer, The Beer Mongers is a cool place to enjoy some local beers on draft or in their refrigerator section. The vibe is very laid back and the bartenders are cool, knowledgeable beer enthusiasts.
google avatar

Avery H.

Yelp
Really cool spot for onsite and takeaway bevs. The cooler is stocked with a multitude of rotating varietals (and many staples), and the folks behind the bar are friendly and full of great suggestions. Really enjoyed sampling through some local, more off-the-charts beers here. It's also in a great little intersection pocket with several restaurants and other bottle shops within walking distance. Definitely worth a stop in.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
Beermongers is the perfect neighborhood-hole-in-the wall-dive-bar-craft beer haven. It's quite small so it gets packed on weekends. The walls are lined with coolers full of an amazing array of craft beer in bottles and cans. Make sure you know what you're in the mood for before you get there, because the selections are so endless that you might spend your whole night deciding instead of drinking!

Yelp
This place is really cool. The parking isnt great, but luckily I was able to find a decent spot near the front. There was one specific thing that caught my eye as I walked in and that was the board game collection. I noticed azule which is an awesome game... but that is just a little peak into my nerdy brain, lets talk about the beer. Truth be told I came looking for some fun portland/vancouver beer I couldnt find up north. And while I did find some of that, what really caught my eye was the bearded iris and cerebral brewing. I have gotten a couple bearded iris's from trades, but I have never seen them in shops. So I grabbed a couple local and a couple not so local. It was awesome. I glad I made the trip in. I definitely would like to stop by next trip and grab a beer on tap!!

Charlie S.

Yelp
Bartender has a stick up his ass.. just walking by with my dogs and thought it would be okay to grab a beer. Didn't need the asshole attitude to tell me I wasn't welcome. Won't be back
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Excellent beer selection- awesome taps and lots of obscure bottles. It's really small inside, though, and everything is really old. We'll be back soon!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have gone here more times than I'm willing to admit during the COVID quarantine - there really just isn't much else to do besides try new beers & ciders. They've got so many options here for ciders which is nice - and they rotate pretty frequently while still keeping most of my favorites. They also have neighboring cities' breweries that we used to frequent before moving back to PDX, so it's good to see the variety. The prices are good - around $3.50 for a tall boy of really anything, unless you get some bougie sort of cider/mead/IPA. Parking is super awkward, but we've always been able to find a spot. Trying to park here probably isn't for the faint of heart aka a crappy driver, but there's plenty of street parking just around the block as well if it's too crowded. The people are super friendly who work here, as well.

Yelp
Reminds me of Cheers ! I recently moved out of Portland and I wish I had spent some more time here. This place is true to the saying "the sum is greater than its parts". To give a little more context, The setup is very divey, with very friendly bartenders who show a genuine interest in what a customer is looking for. They have always helped out in knowing more about beers , picking the right ones and so on. They have some board games to play along as you sip on beers , allow outside food and have a lot of events going on almost every evening that's fun to be a part of. There are a ton of regular patrons here which gives a very warm sense of community and it feels like one big family every time I visited the beermongers. The music or the TV is not loud to have a decent conversation with folks around. The selection of beers is nothing short of awesome, it's usually 2-3 craft breweries with a couple of beers on all ends of the beer spectrum. Special mention to their bottle selection as well if you want to take something home. Put this all together and you get a amazing place to work , watch a timbers game , just hangout with friends, meet new fun people and get some amazing beer. Do not miss out on the charm of this place folks !
google avatar

Gary A.

Yelp
Divey beer bar in a town that is full of beer bars. If this was any other town (like the one I live in) this place would be off the hook. Six or eight beers on draft and an amazing selection of bottles and cans for off-sale. The charm kinda ends there. They were really packed and the bartender was a bit abrupt for my taste. They don't serve food but you can bring it in from several take out places that are nearby. If you are looking for hard to find beer to take home, this is your place but with so many great places to get a beer in the area, I cannot see the point.
google avatar

Hannah L.

Yelp
It's a great beer spot. AMAZING variety, extremely reasonable prices, and casual atmosphere geared towards beer lovers. I didn't appreciate this place until my folks came to visit and my brother could not get over the selection they have. By his word, half of the taps that they have are impossible to get. So, like, not bad.

Yelp
If I could put no stars I would ! First of all I don't know if the guy that was working that day is a dick all the time or .. who knows he's prob a dick all the time the way he treated my husband and his service dog. He made a big deal because we walked in with the service dog and was very rude & a smart ass. Didn't even bother to stay with horrible customer service nobody wants to stay there and have drinks. I attached a picture of the guy that was rude and we will never go back to that bar ever again.

Yelp
600 bottles of beer on the wall.... 600 bottles of beer... you take one down, and pass it around... still 600 bottles of beer on the walllllllllllll! Ok technically they're not on the actual wall. But Beermongers has a huge selection of craft beer available, even the pickiest of the picky will be able to walk out with something they fancy.
google avatar

Riki Y.

Yelp
Excellent beer on tap and selection. The service is top notch. Small place with limited parking so plan accordingly. No foods and no kids (hurray!!!). A nice break from it all. Drink some here and take some to go. If you drink the to-gos here, there is a $1 charge. I'd say, drink what they have on tap and take the others to go. The tap list today consist of beers that are somewhat rare and hard to find. You'll feel like a regular in no time. Cozy and welcoming place. I did visit at 11pm FYI.
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
This place is pretty unique. They offer on tap beer from all over the place not only Portland. If none of the taps are your cup of tea, you can just turn around and see what bottled beers they have from all over the world. They have TVs if games are playing too. Pretty cool place with tons of beer selection.

Yelp
Full five stars for BeerMongers - after more than 2 years holding down a stool at the bar I'm absolutely certain this is the best bottle shop/beer bar in town. This is what makes Portland Beervana, right here - a smaller space packed with character, and characters, all there for a single, consuming purpose - beer. As I said in my previous review, the physical space appears worn and even a bit run-down (the coolers could certainly use some love and new glass) but behind that - and on top of, and around, all of that - is the full Portland beer experience. Brewery stickers are everywhere, there's plenty of Portland soccer kitsch (more on that shortly) and there's even evidence someone played darts on the board once. The 10-deep taplist is probably the best cultivated in PDX - I'm getting constant updates through my beer app on new brews being tapped, several a day towards the end of the week. They try to keep a balanced menu, so you've got different styles, not all stouts at once, for instance (usually). If you can't find a seat at the L-shaped wooden bar (limited to about 10) there are some tables and stand-ups, which come in handy when... The TIMBERS are playing. The two large screens are given over to sports and ESPN most of the time, and when there's a Timbers game on the place will be packed. The only thing competing with beer stickers and posters in the place are Timbers swag and various Portland pro-sports memorabilia. Not much, but enough to remind you where you're at, and where the passion lies - after beer, of course. But hey, if you like to drink your brew in more privacy, grab a bottle from one of the coolers and check out. The selection is immense, ever-changing, and filled with some of the best bottles you'll find in this part of the country. They've even got a handful of specialty beers from one of my favorite breweries in Albuquerque (what up turkies!) chillin in the coolers. Yep. Make this one of your stops. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Cara T.

Yelp
If you're a Portland beer drinker, you know that certain bottle shops rise to the top of the list. This is one of them. Not because it's huge like John's, or has a tap count like Loyal Legion, but because of the curated selection. The newest stellar NEIPA? They got it in fresh. Vintage bottles to share with friends? They got it. Bartenders will offer you a sample of draft to help you decide or steer you in a direction in the fridge based on your taste. GREAT local restaurants surrounding so bring in your food!
google avatar

Sudipto G.

Yelp
600+ bottles of beer. yes please. Great collection of beers on tap as well, got the oatmeal stout.. pretty darn good. Good atmosphere as well, went there during a timbers game so obviously that helped!
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Been going to Mongers for over ten years? Something like that! All I can really say is it's the chillest bottle shop in town. Always a gets selection, tons of rare finds and a vast selection in almost every category. Always a killer tap list, it's small by Portland standards but well curated with only the best picked by the staff. Watched many Timber's games here. Several food options in walking distance including two vegan spots.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection. Shout out for carrying masthead, all the way from Cleveland! Will be back regularly

Yelp
Long, long ago...in the before-time, a priest would enter the "Holy of Holies" once a year to atone for the sins of the people. The big Gee-Oh-Dee (or YHWH, as they called Him) was said to reside here. Because such immense power resided in this small space, a rope was tied around the ankle of the priest. If anything got too Old-Testament-Crazy in there, his buddies could pull him out of the Holy Abyss. I need such a system for places like this. Seriously. I went in here to be buy a very, very specific beer ("Life and Limb", if you're reading this review that should be all you need to know...and you're probably grabbing your keys as you read this)...and...I came out with lots of goodies. SEVENTEEN POINT FIVE PERCENT ALCOHOL (17.5% abv !!!!) Imperial Stout from Norway in a useless black tin that I had to have? Check. Massive quad-hopped double IPA's from around the world? Check. Seriously, they have some freakishly strong, rare monstrosities of the beer world here. I have had over 1,300 unique beers (I keep track) and I had not tasted about 50% of the shiny, happy bottles staring back at me through the crystal-clear coolers. Prices are also pretty competitive, AND you can drink the beer on-site if you wish...at no additional charge. They also have a handful of craft beer on draft for only three paltry bucks a pint. The guy that helped me out was very knowledgeable without getting too carried away and/or evangelical on me (something I would do if I owned a place like this, heh). They also have kegs for sale here, good ones. And if they don't have it, they can probably special order it for you. Break the mold kids! Have something other than PBR on tap at your next get together/christening/briss/thanksgiving!

Yelp
How do you fit 525 beers (no, that's not a typo, read it FIVE-HUNDRED-TWENTY-FIVE) into a place the size of my old 2-bedroom apartment? i don't know, and frankly I don't care. Because when you want beer, especially the special/limited edition brews, or from small/obscure breweries, this is your place to go. And when you want it from a locally-owned place, this is your place to go And when you want ridiculously low prices, friendly servers that know their brews, and AMAZING hours (11am-11pm EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR!!!)...well, you get the idea. Honestly I can't think of any reason you would not come here for your hoppy libations! Oh yeah, and bonus points for being super-close to Los Gorditos and Portabello for great food before or after your drinks! ***Review #15 in the Yelp 30 in 30 Challenge!***

Yelp
If you are like me and like to crack open your beer bottle immediately after you purchase it, this is the place for you. Then you can decide if you want to buy more or just shoot the shit with the beer saavy employees. Last night we had the honor of meeting Sam who singlehandedly rang up the beer purchases, kept everyone's drinks full from the tap and still managed to find time to keep the beer geeks engaged. I hope he found time to pee. :) What do I love more than the selection of beers they have on hand? The prices! Well priced bottles make me want to come back and keep buying for sure. That and the beer I was able to get on tap while browsing definitely eased the pursestrings. Also kudos on the gluten free beer selection. Word on the street is that they got another keg cooler on the way and should have 8 beers on tap and are working on increasing the seating. There is also food from the nearby Lebanese food cart except on Sundays and Mondays. I also hear there is a pretty tasty burrito place nearby :) Oh Beermongers..." I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!"

Mitchell W.

Yelp
I think I just met the same guy he was rude and he made me feel like I was inconveniencing him by being there so here's to the last guy that wrote the same thing I'll never come back here again

Yelp
No joke, when I first started actually drinking at the age of 20 (yes, 20. I rarely swiped liquor from my parents, wasn't in the "cool crowd" in high school and didn't have a fake ID) I drank mixed drinks. Long Islands (which got me in trouble), lemon drops, vodka sours, you name it. Liquor, I drank it. Then I moved to PDX after college. Again, I rarely drank beer - unless you count Mike Hard Lemonade - SIDENOTE IT TASTES GOOD EVEN IF YOU DO NOT CONSIDER IT BEER! But slowly and surely, Beervana took over. First I thought Fat Tire was the SHIZ. Then Blue Moon + orange. Then I grew up a bit and discovered BEEEEER. And thankfully, places like Beermongers exist. While not as extensive as Belmont, it has a good taplist and quite a bottle selection (for cheaper than Belmont for the most part). We also stumbled in there during a special beer tasting event - sour beers - so that made the experience that much sweeter. Though they were busy, the bartenders were super helpful, quick and nice. Here's a big plus - no damn bottle fee. Hallelujah! They had a few TVs around, making us feel like hanging out to watch the Timbers game while we sipped on our tasters. The parking lot seems like it could get a bit tight at times so keep that in mind. Overall, a nice additional to Beervana PDX.

Yelp
This place is BEER-RIFIC!! How cool is it to grab a beer or three out of the cooler, sit at the counter, and have them poor you a glass. LOVE IT! Plus they have a rotating tap with some fantastic beer choices. Lagers, Pale Ale's, Cider, IPA, Stout, Wheat, Local, International, you name it, you can probably find it. Tons of options and all of them delicious. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful when stumped on making a choice on what to get. The place is small, but I have never seen over crowded. Stop in for a drink or take it with you. Prices are varied but not overtly expensive. Very cool concept. The sports are always on. Highly, highly, recommend at least stopping in at this place. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Russ ..

Yelp
We popped over here after a few rounds at Apex across the street. We were happy with the beer selection and were impressed that there's no corkage fee to pop a cold open and drink it on the spot. Cheers to that. But we were pretty wrecked after some Bourbon County Stout and AleSmith Speedway stout ;)
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Beermongers is a funny name, but they aren't foolin when it comes to an excellent selection of hard to find and rare beers from all over. They have 8 rotating taps of different interesting selections, and the multiple fridges around house the bottles you can purchase and consume on premise or takeaway to enjoy at home. The bartenders are friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the craft. I went for a flight of tasters and enjoyed: * Good Life Brewing - Oak Aged Tumalo Kriek - a cherry lambic which was light and not overly fruity. Not bad. * Sierra Northern Hem wet hop was quite delicious * Sierra + Dogfish Head Life and Limb 2 collaboration was very potent in the strong ale mead-like department, and a little syrupy. * Friem Belgian Wheat was creamy and not overly wheatie which is good as I'm not a Hef fan. Definitely a good place to visit if in the area.
google avatar

Geoff G.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot for beers in Portland. Service has always been great. Beer selection is one of the best in town and prices are reasonable. They'll typically have sports on in the background, with sound if it's a local game that people care about. Vibe is low key, with the exception of a couple visits for special events. They allow you to bring in food which is a plus.
google avatar

Ziyan C.

Yelp
Such a Portland crowd here.. a mix of hipsters, Harley guys in leather, and cyclists (in their clip-ons, tights, and of course BEER-sponsored biking jerseys haha =). Lots of selection.. but most of all I'm giving them major cred for providing me with my first cider that I could drink the whole pint of! I'm normally not a beer drinker at all - yes, it's an "acquired" tasted, but I've just never acquired it for all the different types I've tried in the last 10 years of my life. Maybe this cider is my first step - it was the Two Rivers Mcintosh Dry Cider. It was crisp, had a light and slightly sweet taste, and best of all for me wasn't hoppy/bitter at all. It was also entertaining looking at the beer fridge and seeing all the fun beer company names. Lots of puns and little jokes in the names of all these beers.

Peng Z.

Yelp
Don't normally leave too many reviews. Go to this place if you like rude, obnoxious and condescending servers. What is incredible is that these guys have no self-awareness of how bad of service they provide. Avoid this place at all costs and go across the street to properly enjoy a drink.
google avatar

Leslie K.

Yelp
What a cool place to happen upon. We arrived early for our dinner reservation and saw the name of this storefront. It's a bar and an amazingly well-stocked supply of international chilled beers to buy. We took our free time to sample a bottle from Long Island (not very adventurous, I agree, but the label grabbed my interest). I couldn't help but return after dinner to buy a take-home brew, a beer poster, and one of their cute little sampler beer glasses.

Yelp
A great place to have a beer, or buy one for that matter. They are friendly, willing to chat you up, or leave you to contemplate life. They have a great selection of hard to find beers for sale, as well as always having something interesting on tap, usually a cider too. My BF has been going to Beermongers since it opened. We usually stop in on a weekend, look for any new brews they may have acquired since last weekend and sit down and enjoy a brew. We started cellaring beer about a year ago, so this is a great place to find those special beers to add to the cellar. Since they don't offer food, they allow you to bring food in. They have the menus from some local food establishments. Los Gorditos and the Double Dragon are two nearby option, both across the intersection. Double Dragon has some amazing, not your regular, Bahn Mi sandwiches. Crazy good and with a beer, even better.

Yelp
This place is a must if you wanna have a beer or two .. Super cheap beer in the bottles all categorized ... I love it :-) this is almost like liquor store and you get to consume your drinks there if you chose so :) also 5 beers on tap ... owner very involved and down to earth :)

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place last time I was in Portland. Huge beer selection in the fridge and had local and seasonals on tap. Very laid back place and the staff was very polite and also very knowledgeable on their sections. Not too loud and crazy, but a good spot to just mellow out and have some good beers.

Eggggg B.

Yelp
In the past I had good experiences here but this week I visited Beermongers for the first time since covid and got a very condescending attitude from the person working. The salesperson clearly didn't know what he was talking about when I asked him a question. (He made a claim that I knew could not be true having visited the brewery in question, and it was actually kinda funny because he made the false claim with the confidence of a kid who got lots of participation trophies growing up.) Then there was this other thing where I asked about a different beer and he called it "grocery store" beer and said that "the people who come here aren't looking for that." It was a beer that I had previously purchased at Beermongers (is there a way to insert a face-palm emoji?). So I guess I'll just drink whatever they have at the gas station down the street since apparently I'm that class of beer drinker in this dude's opinion!

Yelp
10/10 would return to be talked down to by extremely knowledgeable staff. 2/10 plan for being this way once I turn 30 and think demeaning the younger drinkers is fun.

Yelp
Bottle shop, bar or both? Either way this is a nice little neighborhood spot for people to gather and hang out. I took a friend there to check it out after meandering around Division street all day. Nice selections of beers and ciders. There is no corkage fee, so you can purchase something and drink it there. They had the Blazers game playing on the flat screen (this was back in January). There was a good amount of people coming in and out, but the noise levels was still a nice, quaint atmosphere. My friend is gluten free, so he wanted a little more selection of gluten-free beers/ciders, but the prices for them were just right!
