The Belasco Theater was built years ago as a little playhouse for vaudeville and other acts. Through the years the area became seedy and rundown. The Belasco closed for some years. It reopened a couple of times as a movie house but failed when the area became so unsafe that no one wanted to go.
Since than the Belasco has been put back to its original art deco beauty and the area is safer and will become even more safe as other places open. You can park for about $15 or try the streets, but mind the signs because your car will get towed and that is a real drag. You can also take the metro line but you will be walking close to a mile to get to the venue and that is not the safest walk unless you are in a pack friends.
Once at the venue there is security and you will feel very safe. The security staff is very nice and they know all about the venue and can help you. The staff is also great. They will assist you with the lines and try to get you in as soon as possible. It is standing room only, but they do have very limited seating in the balcony and there is an extra cost for that.
People get there early and wait on line to try to get a good place to stand, so expect a wait. The staff will check to make sure you have your vaccination card while you are in line and at that time they will give you a wrist band for over 21 and under and it also shows you have been vaxed. You won't have to pull out that card more than once. They really do try to get you in.
The exterior is beautiful with neon and all the outside done back to its original glory.
Once you get inside you will see the lobby--get your merch there--and there is sometimes a bar there. Walk into the theater itself for the restrooms. They are to your right and they are super clean and well stocked.
You are required to wear a mask inside and keep it on. You really don't want another patron getting you kicked out. Just keep it on and maybe you will not make another sick.
The interior is just beautiful. It is so clean and there are lovely bars. They have full bars and the prices are high as are soda but no more than any other concert venue. They take credit cards. They also have limited food, but it is not allowed on the floor. It may be in the balcony, I am not sure.
The sound is great. So many of these smaller venues have horrid sound systems. This one is very good.
The stage is large and you will be able to see unless a tall person is right in front of you.
The Belasco cares about all of its customers, be they typical or disabled and that is very important, not to mention the law. You can tell a decent place by the way it treats their wheel chair and other disabled guests. You just let them know when you get there or send an email or call to let them know your needs. They are kind and so very helpful. They will not make you feel like a bother, like places like The Mayan, next door--total dump--and that tells you something about their hiring and the way they want to be perceived.
The booking is now from Live Nation so you can expect some great bands to play there. We saw The Dead South and it was great. We just had a wonderful time. The staff, again, was so very nice as was security.
Have a great time.
