Bell

"With top hats as lampshades and tubas in the loos, quirky is this 16C coaching inn’s middle name. Menus offer hearty dishes with a refined edge and the wine list features bottles from some lesser-known countries. Rustic bedrooms and luxurious lodges share the pub’s idiosyncratic charm." - Michelin Inspector

We stayed here for my partner’s birthday and we were literally blown away. Food is fantastic, rooms are gorgeous and our dog loved her bed and bowl in the room! The staff is absolutely wonderful. They were all so welcoming and friendly. Our pup felt so loved. A special thanks must go to Em and Rae, whom helped me getting all the little surprises ready for my partner and were so incredibly helpful. We’ll definitely be back and stay for a few more days as we want to explore the area a bit more! Highly recommended, particularly if you have a dog.

The Bell Inn is a charming country pub clearly at the heart of village life. The room we had was cute and quirky, with lots of lovely touches. The pub is the same, and the outdoor space amazing if you get a nice day. There is plenty of parking - a small car park at the front and a massive free car public car park behind which you can walk down a connecting path to access the pub. ||Food in the restaurant was nice pub grub, with reasonable service. The breakfast was very lovely and we very much enjoyed it. Overall a very special stay for us, with lots of walks and interesting places on the doorstep.

What a place to stay! Fantastic rooms with so much quirk. Food fantastic and service spot on. Highly recommend this pub hotel. Simple menu but well presented and to a high standard. Looking forward to exploring the area over the next few days and coming back to this lovely room.

Celebrated my mum in laws 80th birthday in 'The Stable' and was very happy with all aspects, from the point of making the initial booking, to being able to allow individual families pay their own part of the bill. With 18 family members needing to be served, the kitchen did an excellent job of sending hot meals to the table at a swift pace. Our main server, Jay, was brilliant and did an fantastic job also. Everyone was very positive about their food and portions were very generous. We were aware that our table was needed for another large booking and we were communicated with brilliantly and gently reminded of our agreement to vacate the table at the agreed time. Our celebration cake, supplied by ourselves, was presented at the table and cut by the kitchen and we were able to gather in the garden yo enjoy that at the end of the meal. So happy that we decided to chose The Bell for our celebration, it was perfect

We were absolutely delighted with our stay—it was an experience that exceeded all expectations. From the inviting ambiance and thoughtfully curated atmosphere to the warm, engaging team, every detail was spot on. Communication, both verbal and non-verbal, was lighthearted, fun, and perfectly in tune with the overall tone and theme of the place.||A special mention goes to the incredible welcome extended to our dog, who is a cherished member of our family and always travels with us. It meant the world to feel so genuinely accommodated.||The food and beverage teams were outstanding, offering a fantastic selection of menu options that impressed us at every turn.||As for our accommodation—it was nothing short of exceptional. It surpassed anything we could have imagined, and when a place not only meets but truly goes beyond expectations, you know you’ve discovered a hidden gem. We can’t wait to return.

We stayed in the Bell for one night in advance of booking it for our wedding, and were well and truly blown away! The pub and restaurant were charming, with a great selection of drinks for both of us (beers for my partner, cocktails for me) and amazing food (the best fish and chips my partner has ever had!). We were one of the first couples to stay in the new lodges, and would 100% recommend - our room had all the amenities of a luxury hotel (a walk in wardrobe, an absolutely huge shower which I wish we could have taken home with us, eye masks to block out the light coming in through the beautiful stained glass window etc etc) while still being stuffed full of all the quirky features the Bell is known for (the birdcage light feature was particularly impressive!) 10/10 would recommend to absolutely everyone.

A huge thank you to all involved in this amazing pub/hotel.|From the moment you walk through the door you are made to feel very welcome. Huge thank you to Rai for the information and showing us some of the other rooms. I have my favourites and will be back the quirkier the better 😂|Lovely welcome pack for our dog , staff, food, atmosphere are 5 star. |Great to see you do sourdough bread for breakfast not many places give you that choice. Again a big thank you for a memorable stay ❤️

A charming inn and pub with plenty of character! We stayed for one night in a beautifully vintage room and absolutely loved it. The pub itself has a lively atmosphere, offering great food and a solid selection of beers. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal here. The food and service were both excellent. We started the meal with a bottle of Beau Sud Rose wine and that was quite good if you disregard the cartoonish label. For the starter we had the fried peppers. These were shaped like little hot peppers but they were not hot. We really liked that dish. For the main course, I had the cod & chips and my wife had the chicken hogao. Both arrived very hot and tasted great. The tartar sauce with mine was made at the restaurant and was excellent. The only issue with the tartar sauce was there was so little of it. By the time we finished there was no room for desert. We really like this place and may return tonight if we get back from Cambridge in time.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to stay here in one of the lodges on a Secret Escapes deal. The lodges are part of a recent refurbishment to the pub and are nestled quietly at the back, surrounding a massive fire pit. Each lodge is unique in its design, and has its own private outdoor area complete with fireplace and chairs to snuggle up. We stayed in the Pretty Vacant lodge, the focal point being a massive Vacant/Occupied sign above the bed, which you could move from vacant to occupied. Attention to detail is key, and the room provides the guest with a host of thoughtful extras. From the local toiletries in the bathroom which you could purchase in the village, to the delicious cream tea that welcomes you in the room. We had dinner that evening in the pub. The food was really delicious, and well portioned. A similar themed followed at breakfast the following morning. The entire pub and accommodation is really quirky, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Whilst there is not much to do in the surrounding village, this does not matter as The Bell is so charming you don't want to leave the room, or venture any further for food.

Yelp
Recently reopened, refurbished and fabulous! It has been furnished and decorated to a very high standard. Traditional country decor is highlighted in the long wooden tables, benches and open fireplaces but the quirkiness is in the detail. I especially love the top hats turned into lamp shades but remain dubious about the use of tubas as urinals, picture to follow when I have persuaded one of my male friends to take a photo. Although impressive and very inventive, I fear that alcohol and a gentlemen's aim may be asking for a big mess. It really is a delightful and welcome addition to a sleepy country village and fingers crossed I will have more lovely things to say after I have tried the food. Keep your ears peeled.

Yelp
Had lunch here recently with friends and the fish and chips were some of the best I've ever had. The chips were amazing. Will definitely return here next time I'm in Wadhurst.

Yelp
I have heard great things about the food untried so I can not comment! What they have achieved is undoubtedly a 1st class transformation, full of great well thought-out features and the lighting makes it a very welcoming sight on a dark winter evening. Aspects are absolutely spot on, bordering on the quirky, but I was disappointed. I have to say it was a case of trying a little too hard and, rather than being the go-to-happening-place, it was a little soulless! This may be because there is not really enough seating in the bar area and we ended up with a choice of either the small room between the bar or the room with the long table not the best options to create a welcoming atmosphere. I will give it a 2nd chance as it is very handy (walking distance) but it will have to go some to regularly lure me away from the Salehurst Halt (5 miles away!) Sorry guys so very nearly but not quite!

Yelp
Visited Saturday. Fab evening. Food absolutely delicious and staff couldn't have been more helpful.
