Bell

"With top hats as lampshades and tubas in the loos, quirky is this 16C coaching inn’s middle name. Menus offer hearty dishes with a refined edge and the wine list features bottles from some lesser-known countries. Rustic bedrooms and luxurious lodges share the pub’s idiosyncratic charm." - Michelin Inspector

Booked the restaurant for just after Christmas. Wonderful eclectic interior design to the dining area and pub. Dog friendly and perfect service from the staff. Reasonable prices and top quality food. I would recommend trying the pie of the day as the pastry was top quality ( my mum was a professional pastry chef so I’m aware of quality pastry when I taste it). We will definitely visit again when we’re in the area, but always book if possible as it’s a popular venue.

Had a wonderful meal here while staying nearby for the weekend. While parking was tricky, no doubt due to the wedding that was happening that evening, once we were in there everything was perfect. The restaurant had a lovely rustic feel, which seems to be lost in a lot of places these days. The service was spot on, the staff were incredibly friendly and made sure we had everything we needed, and the food itself was some of the nicest I've eaten in a pub for a long time. Would certainly return, and would like to consider staying at the hotel there in the future.

My boyfriend and I were fortunate enough to spend our anniversary here at The Bell this past Sunday-Monday, and it was absolutely fantastic! When booking online, I requested with them if we could have a specific room, which they were happy to honour for us. The room we stayed in, named the Moon Wild, was absolutely stunning. The room was spotlessly clean, well maintained, had amazing character and most importantly, had a very comfy bed! The room had so many lovely touches; including biscuits made by the pub chef, bath salts to use in the beautiful copper tub, complimentary water, tea, hot chocolate and coffee. Absolutely 5 star! We also had Sunday lunch at the pub which was some of, if not the best, pub food we have ever had. I had the chicken, ham and leek pie and it was divine!!! I will be back for the pie alone! The staff also very kindly gave us a complimentary prosecco and beer to celebrate our anniversary, this was such a lovely touch. The staff were also all very kind, smiley, helpful and friendly. Our waiter, who was a young blonde guy, was super attentive and friendly and made our meal very enjoyable! Another shout out to the lovely lady who checked us in to the hotel part of the pub… I regrettably didn’t get her name, but she was so lovely! Thank you so much for a lovely stay, we look forward to coming back in the summer and staying again! :)

A great place to spend a weekend away. With lots of lovely towns/ villages to visit nearby - we loved Rye. Also plenty of good dogs walks too. Staff all very friendly and gave some great recommendations. Pub has delicious food and a great atmosphere.

Beautiful quiet and cosy location. Couldn’t be more dog friendly and welcoming. All staff were extremely warm and approachable. Log fires, delicious food and drinks. Wolverine was treated to the most fluffy and huge bed, welcome pack with a blanket, toy and other treats. Humans were equally delighted with the gorgeous room, homemade cookies and fabulous copper bath! The most romantic and calming holiday experience. ♥️🖤🐾

We found everyone really helpful from Em who initially helped us with our booking providing exceptional service from start to finish. We then met Rae who very warmly greeted us as we arrived with our 2 dogs, Jessica and Brodie and who also showed us to our lodge. We were also impressed with Pauline who worked in the restaurant and had a super, helpful demeanor and gave our dogs complimentary sausages. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this to anyone who would like a trip away especially with dogs. Thank you so much!

Everything you might expect and more from a beautiful village and country hotel with quirky rooms. Ancient building with some modern cottages attached. Altogether lovely & the staff attentive and friendly. We are loving it. We will be back in the summer months to explore Kent & East Sussex further. 🙏😍

We were already big fans of The Bell but having our wedding their sealed it as our favourite pub/ hotel/ place. There aren't the words to express how grateful we are to every single person there working over our wedding weekend. A quote from one of our guests gets us closest "You said you were getting married in a pub?! This isn't a pub. This is like no where I've ever been". And they were right. The Bell really is like no place you've been. There's no pub with better food. No hotel with nicer yet so homely rooms. No place with nicer more accommodating staff. Becky made the whole wedding process so smooth and we're endlessly grateful to her for that. But everyone working over the course of the weekend helped my husband and I have the best few days imaginable. If you're considering it as your wedding venue, do it! We'd do it all over again if we could!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal here. The food and service were both excellent. We started the meal with a bottle of Beau Sud Rose wine and that was quite good if you disregard the cartoonish label. For the starter we had the fried peppers. These were shaped like little hot peppers but they were not hot. We really liked that dish. For the main course, I had the cod & chips and my wife had the chicken hogao. Both arrived very hot and tasted great. The tartar sauce with mine was made at the restaurant and was excellent. The only issue with the tartar sauce was there was so little of it. By the time we finished there was no room for desert. We really like this place and may return tonight if we get back from Cambridge in time.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to stay here in one of the lodges on a Secret Escapes deal. The lodges are part of a recent refurbishment to the pub and are nestled quietly at the back, surrounding a massive fire pit. Each lodge is unique in its design, and has its own private outdoor area complete with fireplace and chairs to snuggle up. We stayed in the Pretty Vacant lodge, the focal point being a massive Vacant/Occupied sign above the bed, which you could move from vacant to occupied. Attention to detail is key, and the room provides the guest with a host of thoughtful extras. From the local toiletries in the bathroom which you could purchase in the village, to the delicious cream tea that welcomes you in the room. We had dinner that evening in the pub. The food was really delicious, and well portioned. A similar themed followed at breakfast the following morning. The entire pub and accommodation is really quirky, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Whilst there is not much to do in the surrounding village, this does not matter as The Bell is so charming you don't want to leave the room, or venture any further for food.

Yelp
Recently reopened, refurbished and fabulous! It has been furnished and decorated to a very high standard. Traditional country decor is highlighted in the long wooden tables, benches and open fireplaces but the quirkiness is in the detail. I especially love the top hats turned into lamp shades but remain dubious about the use of tubas as urinals, picture to follow when I have persuaded one of my male friends to take a photo. Although impressive and very inventive, I fear that alcohol and a gentlemen's aim may be asking for a big mess. It really is a delightful and welcome addition to a sleepy country village and fingers crossed I will have more lovely things to say after I have tried the food. Keep your ears peeled.

Yelp
Had lunch here recently with friends and the fish and chips were some of the best I've ever had. The chips were amazing. Will definitely return here next time I'm in Wadhurst.

Yelp
I have heard great things about the food untried so I can not comment! What they have achieved is undoubtedly a 1st class transformation, full of great well thought-out features and the lighting makes it a very welcoming sight on a dark winter evening. Aspects are absolutely spot on, bordering on the quirky, but I was disappointed. I have to say it was a case of trying a little too hard and, rather than being the go-to-happening-place, it was a little soulless! This may be because there is not really enough seating in the bar area and we ended up with a choice of either the small room between the bar or the room with the long table not the best options to create a welcoming atmosphere. I will give it a 2nd chance as it is very handy (walking distance) but it will have to go some to regularly lure me away from the Salehurst Halt (5 miles away!) Sorry guys so very nearly but not quite!

Yelp
Visited Saturday. Fab evening. Food absolutely delicious and staff couldn't have been more helpful.
