The 24 Best Restaurants in Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec | Eater

"This teeny-tiny Old Ottawa South restaurant might have a quaint pub vibe, but the cuisine is more elevated than you might expect from the interior. The full English breakfast (called a Full Belmont) is made with quality local ingredients, while the dinner menu spans the globe, from scallop ceviche to patatas bravas to the famous Trini doubles." - Joel Balsam

Had a lovely bunch with a group of 6. Atmosphere was great for our group conversation. Service was impeccable and foot was absolutely delicious 😋 High quality, moderate portions and size. Very happy with the experience. Thank you The Belmont! Like this review if helpful 🙏

Google
Near perfect hipster brunch. The Belmont gives vibes of an old time bar with modern vibe. The decor is great, the atmosphere is jovial, and the servers are really nice. We had the poached eggs and Turkish eggs!!! Yum!! The servers gave us a side of the house made habanero sauce, which honestly was the best I have had in years. The bread was also made daily in house. What a great meal!!

Had a delightful meal here on a busy Sunday. Turkish eggs were excellent(with a side of home fries and the IPA was nice. It was very busy, but we were able to get a seat. Service as a result could have been a little more fulsome, but understanding that it was a full restaurant and they were kind enough to seat us without a reservation.

Had brunch here and really enjoyed it! I had the French toast with a poached egg and bacon on the alley, simple but so tasty. My friend went for the bruschetta with steak( forgot the name on the menu), and honestly? Chef’s kiss. The pineapple mocktail was just okay, and while the coffee was decent, I wish they had more options. Ended up walking across the street for a proper double espresso. Still, the food hit the spot, and I'd come back for the brunch vibes!

Google
Very exquisite restaurant, only got a drink and some of their Doubles. The least authentic version of a doubles, but regardless still super flavorful, especially the sauce. Even the bathroom was beautifully decorated. Will return for some of their main dishes one day.

Cannot recommend this place enough. Service was incredible and the prix fixe dinner was fantastic. Feb '25 update - came back for Valentine's Day and it continues to be incredible. Fantastic cocktails and the Valentine's menu was absolutely delicious.

Although a little small and busy, this place is a gem. The Turkish eggs are delicious! The French toast was Out. Of. This. World. Highly recommend a brunch here, and can’t wait to try the dinner menu!

Google
Had a great experience here! The service was super friendly, our server gave us great suggestions for shareable plates. The chicken was hands down the best dish of the night, absolutely delicious! I’m already thinking about coming back for that. The beef tartare was also really well prepared and full of flavor. We started with the Classic Belmont and it was a perfect choice, really tasty. Great vibe, great food, and great service. Definitely recommend and will be back!

Yelp
Cute little spot I would recommend a reservation. This is my second time and once again I had not made reservations. (Expect 45-1h wait time.) not bad as there are a lot of cute shops around. Both me and my partner got the Belmont breakfast. Has a bit of everything ($23) I gave my partner the bread and got his salad. He said the bread was really good. I really enjoyed my salad nice and fresh not sure what kind of leaves was used. First time I see that shape. Back to salad it was light and a little bit sweet. Potatoes are the next best thing on my plate. I like them he spice that was used, I added a but more salt on mine. The breakfast sausage did not give me heartburn... not guaranteeing anything but worth mentioning. I believe they were lighter in oil simply. My partner always trades them for bacon. I only got a half sausage, he had the rest. The last thing I want to mention is less positive. I usally like breakfast beans. Got excited when I saw the black beans. However, really disappointed nothing more than warmed out black beans. Not what I would expect from breakfast beans. I expect a maple or sugar flavour. You can pay $5 to add to your breakfast... mine came with them but I would skip. Unless unflavoured black bean is your thing.

Yelp
The food was all delicious, highly recommend getting the Piri Piri chicken, it was juicy, had a nice creamy yogurt-y sauce to balance out the rich spices. The crispy garlic on top was a nice touch! Comes we two legs, perfect for sharing as a couple. Also highly recommend getting the doubles. You don't even need to add meat to it, as the chickpeas had enough flavour on its own. I could eat another 6 of those!

Yelp
Went for brunch. I fell in love with the 1960s tourist decor. Service was a bit on the reserved side, though, using my wit and charm I did manage to get a conversation going, and some smiles. Everything was efficiently delivered and everyone was busy. The food overall was good. Not a lot of options if you have food issues, due to the contained brunch menu, which was gluten, egg and nightshade focused. However, everything I tried was delicious and Hubs enjoyed his breakfast as well. Good coffee, which is important to some of us. We will go back for a non-brunch experience.

Yelp
Had brunch here with some friends. The huevos rancheros and it was good but kind of cold. The service was okay, I felt like we were being rushed even though we went there later in the afternoon and they weren't very busy. Some parking is available in the parking lot beside the restaurant. The restaurant was nicely decorated.

Yelp
This was a nice find on a rainy night. We got the last table that was not reserved. It's an eclectic menu - basically fish or meat with veggie sides. The Mocktail with NA gin was very tasty. My husband got a cider, which he said was good too. We had the scallops, which were sliced thin and served chilled, and the halibut. The broccolini could have been cooked a bit longer as it was hard to cut. The staff were friendly and the service very good. If we are passing thru Ottawa again, we'd go here again.

Yelp
My husband and I and another couple enjoyed brunch at this little restaurant - everything has eggs in the dish. I was super hungry, so I had the steak and eggs, two ordered the huevos rancheros, and one person ordered a lovely salad. With bottomless cups of coffee the server was very pleasant and came quickly and unobtrusively with a glass of orange juice when requested. The minor criticism may be that the Hollandaise sauce was a bit too salty. Otherwise, no complaints. It is also in the Canadian folk music walk of fame

Yelp
We love the Belmont!! Have been coming here for several years and it never disappoints. They have a really eclectic and unique menu and funky interior. They used to turn into a bar with music at nighttime but I don't know if they still do that but I definitely had many fun nights there! Today was my first time trying their brunch menu and it was very tasty. I got the Turkish eggs which came with 2 poached eggs sourdough toast and a Zataar spice creamy sauce which was delish and nothing I have ever had for brunch before! 10/10 would eat again.

Yelp
this was something pretty unique and that tasted so good! the herbed yogurt was honestly amazing, the herbs were perfect. the chili oil felt a bit useless? like I didn't taste much heat??? but the dish tasted so good. the bread was a little tough though. I also wish the dish just came with more ? like at the end of the day I really paid $17 for two eggs, bread, and yogurt

Yelp
I found a last minute reservation slot and took a chance. I knew I was going to be a few minutes (9 to be exact) late waiting for my lyft. I called ahead and the staff assured me I would be fine. They even informed me how long I had the table until the next reservation. This helped me plan my ride back to hotel. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly greeted and given a lovely table by the window. My server was just as delightful and gave me time review the menu. I selected the famous deviled eggs, a vegetarian indian inspired sweet potato and Paneer dish with an old fashion cocktail. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING! The deviled eggs where chilled, smooth texture and just the right amount of pickled taste. The Indian inspired dish... was just amazing. I regret... yes regret not getting a 2nd dish to go. Similar to a Shahi korma, but without as much curry sauce. I would've only added a little more of the curry. It was filling, packed full of flavor and a great price! I can't wait to go back to Ottawa just for this place. Don't skip on this lovely place. They have an intimate setting and great music. Must go to for dinner!

Yelp
Delicious culinary surprises, tastes, and colour. We had the Family Dinner (4 adults) and loved the freedom of allowing Chef Phil to decide for us the menu. The edamame beans in their pods make for a perfect appetizer to get messy and to share as a table community. We started with Pork stuffed buns!!!! OMG, we ended up ordering another plate of those buns! Maybe the best EVER. We love the vibe at Belmont as a local neighbourhood bar/restaurant where we ALWAYS bump into neighbours, and where the owner is usually sitting at the bar shmoozing with everyone. Think "Cheers". Can't wait for their outdoor tables on Bank Street. Thank you Nat, Niki, Sammy, Adrian, Chef Phil and gang. We can't wait to be back.

Yelp
Wow. I must have walked by this place 50 times and never noticed it. I happened to see their new sign and stepped in for a bite. Amazing. We were three and we got three small plates to share. They were all delicious. Steak tartare was great. The dumplings were so tasty. I will be back!

Yelp
I was in Ottawa for business for 10 days. I visited The Belmont 3 times within that time frame. It's that good. Food. Cocktails. Service. Vibe. As a result of my 3 visits, I tried quite a bit on their menu. I went the first time by myself and met some awesome people at the bar along with the bartender/waitress Shea who was unreal. The second time I visited I brought a couple coworkers and absolutely blew their socks odd with the food so they insisted we book it another night before leaving. The Trini Doubles with Beef are a must. Absolutely Amazing. Picture a fluffy taco and flavours of a samosa. But even better. House made beef dumplings were excellent as well. After seeing the corn get ordered a ton in my 3 visits there, I had to try it. My god was it ever good. Beef Tartar is simple but very good. The chopped up pickles mixed in give it a ton of depth. The bossom (roast pork lettuce wraps) was very very good. Comes with house made kimchi and some other great toppings including a scallion sauce. Shrimp stuff eggplant sounded odd but was very good too. Fun to find a place like this that is very chill and casual but blows your socks off with food, service and vibe. I will be back upon my next visit to Ottawa!

Yelp
The Belmont is a great little space, at the mouth of South Ottawa, serving up a simple menu that includes something called Trini Doubles. Half taco-half bao. Fully delicious. Cocktails and a 3-item Charcuterie were satisfying and arrived beautifully. Add in some togarashi-spiced olives and duck tataki. None of it lasted long. Would definitely return, if not for the food, certainly another cocktail and the excellent customer service.

Yelp
We didn't eat there - we had reservations but when we arrived we were not greeted with much enthusiasm, then we were told we could sit either near the bar or in the middle of the room. I will not pay $115 for a bottle of wine and not have a table cloth. The menu and the service was so PRETENTIOUS - we left! Very limited menu also. The whole short experience felt very cold.

Kirstin F.

Yelp
Tried this place based on previous reviews and had a yen for tapas. Vintage glasses & mugs and refrigeration behind the bar, intimate place, small menu. It's Sunday, and that means some specials tonight. I started with a cocktail called Lomo's limo, St Germaine and Gin with grapefruit juice and lime, shaken with ice and served in a flat champagne glass. Yummm. I got a starter called pork rillette, described as a pork pate with crostini. It came with wee spicy gherkins (but not sweet), pickled red onion and pickled kohlrabi. It was wonderful! My only concern was that the pork wasn't smooth the whole way through, I enjoy some chunks but this was a bit much. I also ordered the beef and cabbage dumplings (on special) and they were good. Well cooked, held together well. They were spiced, tasty but not something I need to have again. Overall nice spot, definitely hipster. I'd recommend.

Yelp
We went here for dinner last night with another couple and could not have enjoyed it more. It is definitely outside our normal stomping grounds however it is well worth the trip. The atmosphere is fun and while they clearly plan on adding some more things on the wall, the vibe is great and the staff is really attentive. The have a number of really interesting cocktails. We only tried two of them but they were both delicious. The bar manager also came buy with a secret drink that he is still working on and while I'm not sure what was in it, I would have gladly had many glasses. While everything else was great, the food was really the star of the show. It is all smalls plates and so we order a bunch and then shared. Every dish had at least 3 out of the 4 people raving about it and there is certainly something for everyone. The chicken skins are amazing and we ended up getting 4 orders! Don't not pass them up. I also really loved the rabbit soup and sweet potato pot stickers. Really all the food was great and pretty different then anything I have seen elsewhere. It is clear that things are still evolving but I hope they don't change too much as we definitely plan on going back and we would be sad to miss out on any of the what we had. Make this a must visit in the near future.

Yelp
Wow- not just "snacks" as the title insists. These are cozy, delicious and complex flavoured foods served in generous portions at a great price point. Very happy to see a new resto in Old Ottawa South, I hope to see this place for a long time. The service was like going to your dorky big brothers house, and he and his friends are trying to be cool blasting their ironic alternative favourites from the 90s... in a fun way. I felt really at home there. There was so much thought and effort that goes into every dish, you could tell. The decor is rustic cabin lumberjack chic, which is a look I always gravitate to. Worth making the trip to try this place. I think it will be a staple for me and my husband because we live near by. Just so you know, they don't really do dessert, so be warned.

Yelp
Very cozy and trendy place. I like that it's not right downtown. Cocktails are amazing and so is the food. I had a salad and it was surprisingly good. Will be back several times to try more of their food and drinks! Prices are not terrible. At least you know you'll get something delicious!

Yelp
Just what we need in Old Ottawa South -- or for that matter, anywhere in Ottawa -- a cosy, friendly neighbourhood gastropub. Small plates that are easy to share with your friend. They seem interested in locally grown food. Scrumptious. A nice, small selection of beer and wine. I am glad that I took in a mixed drink. There is a well-stocked rack of bitters and what-have-you for mixing. The bartender, Will, is excellent and imaginative. We had a wonderful meal and proclaimed The Belmont our new favourite Ottawa restaurant.

Shubho B.

Yelp
We didn't really know what to expect. It's a small space with a hip clientele. Ambience is great - kind of like Toronto hip-casual. Or maybe energetic/hip neighborhood gastropub. There were some interesting drinks on the board. I got a pisco with honey and something else. Excellent drink. But on to the food! My sister is a vegetarian but that wasn't a problem at all. The bibb and togarashi was really amazing for what's basically lettuce. But it was chopped in large chunks and seemed substantial somehow. There was seaweed and an excellent dressing and flavourful chilies (tagarashi). The sweet potato potstickers were a cross between potato dumplings and something like maple whipped sweet potato with maybe nutmeg or cinnamon. Absolute treat! The roasted cauliflower with hollandaise truffle was excellent even for this meat eater. It was crunchy and flavorful. Beats raw cauliflower and dip like Rick Grimes on a zombie. The only weak link was the sesame coated fried pork which was a special. The sesame was good but the pork was kind of tasteless. Most restaurants add a ton of sugar to make it taste good. I just added it to the bibb and togarashi and that was a great combo. I needed something sweet afterwards so went for the foie mousse on cinnamon toast. It looked and tasted like liver ice cream! It was surprisingly good. Really good with the cinnamon toast. But honestly they gave way too much liver. It was too rich for 2 of us to finish. I look forward to trying out the rest of their menu soon! Big fan!

Yelp
Delicious food and amazing cocktails. Their dim Sunday deals are so worthwhile! I just found out about this place a couple of months ago but it is quickly becoming a regular hangout for me! Highly recommend the charcuterie it is probably the best I've tried in Ottawa so far, and the deviled eggs are delicious. All of cocktails are great but try the joe Kentucky for a delicious nightcap
google avatar

Yelp
Small, but great atmosphere: fun, but cosy. Drinks were good. Pleasant staff as well.

Yelp
Fabulous time at the Belmont last night. Adrian and his team took great of us and the place was packed with a really wonderful energy. Excellent cocktails and a tight little wine list. The bar snacks (love that!) of devilled eggs and kimchi were fun and really well done. Could have eaten ten eggs. The beef/mushroom dumplings were an exceptional starter, however the highlight was the small jerked hen for our main. We went half order but there is a full hen option too. So good it was actually inspiring. Bonus points for having such a stellar cheese plate to finish the meal. Selections were perfect. We'll definitely be back and will probably bring friends. I'm not sure how it could have been better...five stars it is. Boom.

Yelp
this is a great restaurant in ottawa. I've been 4-5 times and always really enjoyed. service very good, and the food is great bang for your buck. will definitely be back.

Roxanne W.

Yelp
Great food, great staff, great ambiance, great decor, great cocktails! A foodie's delight. Can't say enough about what an awesome gem this resto is.

Yelp
Just had brunch at the Belmont. Although this www the first brunch offered at the Be,mint, they nailed the menu. Not your typical eggs Benny of trucker special fare, this was indicitive of the selections offered there. The Rosti, a scrumptious comfort food was excellent. A fine culinary experience balancing flavour and good old fashioned heartiness. The nuevos rancheros.......Mmmmmm...... Mike, the chef, pulls out all the stops for this selection. A wonderful spin on an old favourite. The poached eggs and the guacamole are exquisite. This was my first meal at e Be.mont and I will certainly be going back. The atmosphere is cozy and the service outstanding. Jeremy

Yelp
Sunday the 19th feb. I brought some friend to show then this place only to be left at the door while the girl in charge kept letting her friend in.

C M.

Yelp
Great food. Too bad laying out $100 leaves you still hungry. Lovely food and cocktail menu, but $22 for a few pieces of fresh pasta is ridiculous. I went home and ate after because I didn't want to spend more money. If you have cash to burn...
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
The Belmont has a fun, laid back atmosphere and an amazing menu that changes often to liven things up. We had dinner and drinks there this weekend and highly recommend the pumpkin dumplings and fried brussel sprouts - delish!

James C.

Yelp
We love this place for the best cocktails in old Ottawa south usually get crowded around 11 menu is small but always something new and interesti

Yelp
I had the brunch this morning. It is a very relax place to meet with friends. We had the poached eggs and breakfast biscuit. These are delicious. The price is also reasonable for young people. The coffee is fresh and tasty. The restaurant design is warm and special. I like the blackboard on one side of wall. The bar table is also comfortable. Next time I will try the dinner. Only one small thing, we found this great restaurant on website. Otherwise, it is very easy to miss this great place, because I am always by pass the door and Never knew it existed on Bank Street. Great people, great food.
google avatar

Hailey D.

Yelp
By far the best vibes in Ottawa. Great music at a good volume, good lighting and even better service and food. I ordered a cocktail and it was too strong for me (I'm just learning to like bourbon) so the fabulous bartender without a question made me another drink no charge. No problem. NO problems at the Belmont!!! You gotta try this place and experience the vibes and coziness.
google avatar

Chloe B.

Yelp
Really great food and service! All the dishes on the menu have great flavour, and the staff are enthusiastic.

Hugh S.

Yelp
Really excellent food - unusual and inventive apps and mains - great wines and cosy atmosphere. Ranks with similar bistros and restaurants I've been to in Montreal. Well worth it! HS

Joe G.

Yelp
Amazing food, great drinks, great service. My buddy ordered a second order of the duck because it was that amazing. Will be a staple in my books, right up there with Fauna and Pomeroy.

John M.

Yelp
The Belmont's creativity and intimate charm are a rare combination in Ottawa. It offers a dynamic menu that manages to deliver on combinations you wouldn't normally expect to be successful. The food is worth making the trip to check out. As are the cocktails. Make sure you have back-up plans for the ride home because the drinks are delicious and the fun atmosphere is infectious.
