Big Board Raises $30K After Violating Mask and Vaccine Mandates - Eater DC

"H Street’s Big Board co-owner Eric Flannery appeared on Fox News Monday night to talk with Laura Ingraham about the big trouble his restaurant landed in after repeated violations of D.C.’s indoor mask and vaccine mandates, resulting in a suspended liquor license. By Tuesday, the D.C. Department of Health pulled the plug on the burger spot." - Stephanie Carter

H Street’s Big Board Is in Big Trouble After Repeated Vaccine Mandate Violations - Eater DC

"H Street restaurant and bar Big Board is standing by its commitment to ignore D.C.’s vaccine and mask mandates. The H Street burger spot racked up enough violations that the owners must now appear in front of the D.C. liquor board, with the possibility of a liquor license suspension and worse on the table." - Stephanie Carter

Google
The Big Board was the first bar I visited in DC, and it set the bar high for my experience in the city. Conveniently located within walking distance from the Capitol Building, this spot offers a welcoming and energetic atmosphere. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive, ensuring we were well taken care of even during a packed house. Their impressive selection of draft beers pairs perfectly with a diverse menu of delicious bar food, crafted to complement your drink of choice. The food arrived quickly, and the chef even took the time to engage with us, which added a personal touch to the experience. Whether you're looking for a lively spot to catch a game or simply relax with good food and drinks, The Big Board is an excellent choice. I’ll definitely be returning as the sports season heats up!

Google
The burgers were devine. I gobbled mine up enjoying every bite. The pickels are made in house and have a unique flavor. The fries were good. We did not like the parmesean on the sweet potato fries but they were good once we brushed that off. Our waiter was wonderful and made great reservations. The soda was a little flat which is a bummer at a bar.

Google
Good food and good service... it's a small bar with limited seating area. The food was good, I came here looking for the Jalisco Frito, it was good but not great. They have brunch with unlimited Mimosas until 3pm for $12 which isnt bad at all. It's good bar food for sure

Kushal Mohnot

Google
We had both the vegetarian burgers. They had a mushroom burger that was cheesy and a classic black bean burger. You could tell they were made in house because they were better than anything you can get from a store

Google
Might be the best burger I’ve ever had - crazy good char flavor on top of whatever seasoning they use. Was surprised it was so much more flavorful than a burger at Sovereign a few days prior. Service is fast and friendly too. Cant recommend it enough.

Google
We just moved to DC and have been trying different restaurants and bars in the area. This place is the perfect neighborhood bar, and I was compelled to leave a review due to the impeccable customer service. While the food and atmosphere are something you would expect of this type of dive, good but not over the top, the two men working were amazing in their attention to each customer. Everyone was treated like a friend, and they were quick, efficient, and perceptive to our needs as dining guests, while also serving the bar. I wish I had gotten their names. I was highly impressed by them and we will be returning!

Google
Great local bar with good food. Staff and local patrons make you feel right at home.

Google
One of the best Burgers I've had all year; got The New York, medium rare and solid order. Beer prices vary on demand which is a cool stick.

Yelp
Pros: heavy pours, location, food menu looks bomb, great service! Cons: feels like your grandmas cluttered basement Overall I was satisfied with my drink, the bartender and owner were both super friendly and have a great sense of humor!
google avatar

Yelp
Very solid local/neighborhood bar experience. Owner (Eric) is behind the bar and friendly. Burgers are good - and decently priced. I had the Port d'Amsterdam (highly recommend). Onion rings were good without being *overly* oily. Will come back. Definitely a locals place, with a few harmless barflies.

Yelp
Good food, good beer, plenty of TVs and friendly service. Couldn't ask for more out of local neighborhood bar. My bf and I have enjoyed ourselves every time we visited. The bartender and patrons are always friendly and welcoming. Restroom is downstairs so just something to note in case you're a wheelchair user. Don't come here expecting frills, they're not trying to be that.

Yelp
Tasty regular bar bites, and drinks. More of a sports bar vibe and the owner there running the show. Busy little dive spot.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and food, but there are bugs everywhere, scared about a health code violation

Yelp
To quote George C. "That was an f-ing great burger. But the worst service I've experienced." And that's a pretty good summary of this spot. We were hungry and didn't feel like walking anywhere, so we landed here as it happens to be very close to us. We were in the downstairs (I believe there's also an upstairs), which is a bar with stools and a handful of tables. It's a small space. Not exactly clean, not exactly dirty. Also not particularly comfortable either. We were seated and given menus. It seems like there were three people working. 1 bartender, 1 host/server, and 1 server/busser? The host/server, while polite, was not friendly - and was quite forgetful. Literally, could not remember our order when attempting to repeat it back to us prior to leaving to put it in. (What's so wrong with writing it down?) He then even came back to us and asked us if we would like to order drinks. Spoiler alert: We'd already ordered drinks from him. He'd just completely forgotten. We had buffalo wings, a burger, and fries. The buffalo wings were cooked great - a nice crisp to them. They were large and meaty. The buffalo sauce was really mild, though. And neither the ranch nor blue cheese dipping sauces were all that good. The burger was a total hit with George C. He kept talking about it for hours afterwards. The Old Bay fries were good. So in sum, good food, absolute crap service. (Oh, apparently, the politics of this place are also highly suspect and it's a fav of the worst of the worst Republicans.)

Yelp
Great place. Big burgers and I cannot lie. Cheap beer and a good selection. The restaurant is groggy. Easy walk from the back of Union Station. Abundant parking on side streets. Keep in mind that it's a hole in the wall. Recommend.

Yelp
Grabbed a build your own burger and corn on the cob for dinner take out. Burger was cooked as order and great along with corn. Friendly staff and reasonable price. Definitely will return to try a different burger.
google avatar

Maché C.

Yelp
There was a large water bug stuck in the window. I think they need to hire an exterminator.
google avatar

Pat B.

Yelp
This is a local dive bar. Burgers were pretty good. Onion rings were disappointing - greasy and not very crispy. Beer good, Malbec disgusting. Seemed like there were lots of regulars at the bar. Normally a good sign but tonight the food was poor to average.
google avatar

Yelp
Man, who knew burgers were so divisive? :-P Anyway, we were here last night with friends, on their recommendation. I had the Ciao Bella and m fiancee had the Chicago Fire. Her's was very nicely spicy and side sauce was really good. My was cooked to perfection as well and also very tasty. I would've liked one more slice or prosciutto. The fries are great. Nice beer list. We had good service, the server was very attentive. We'll be back

Yelp
Thanks Adam, the bartender, for making this a great experience. His 5-star serve was a highlight. Nice spaces, good tvs, overall good atmosphere. Great sports bar spot to watch a game. Since moving, I hadn't visited. I had the corn on the cob app and the Big Apple Burger with sweet potato fries. It was an amazing meal. The corn on the cob definitely needs its own paragraph...wow. This wasn't just your dad's corn on the cob (happy Father's Day!). It was a crunchy kernel packed delicacy with chipotle powder, parmesan cheese, and parsley. Double wow. The burger and (sweet potato) fries were top notch. First, the bacon was solid, thick cuts. The burger was so juicy, veggies fresh, and bun had sesame! So good to the last bite. The fries had parmesan sprinkled on top. So good. Give them a try.

Yelp
Look, beyond anything else, you need to know this might be the best burger place on H street. Seriously, these guys know how make a damn burger! The bar is usually regulars until about 7 most nights, the tenders actually will give a shite about knowing you for next time, and the food is above what you'll find in most bars in DC. Strong local presence, enjoyable bar, and they'll leave you alone if you really want that. Also, if you're into some spice, get a Jalisco Frito without cheese and call it a day. I hope you like this place as much as it's neighbors do!
google avatar

Susanna M.

Yelp
This is my favorite local bar. The owner, all the bartenders, and the regulars are all great people. I will definitely keep coming back.
google avatar

Rodger S.

Yelp
You can count on this place to have good burgers every time you go. Our recent visit was no exception. We started with the fried catfish bites. They were very good. We then both had the basic 6-ounce burger, Tom with American cheese & me with Monterey jack. Both medium rare. They were excellent. We also shared an order of fries, which were very good. The only flaw was that we were stuffed by the end of our meal!

Mia P.

Yelp
the burgers here are literally the best burgers I've had in my life. they're not McDonald's trash, they're real burgers, but they're also not one of those burgers that claim to be fancy. It's just a burger, but it's the best burger your tongue will ever touch. juicy patties that are perfectly soft inside and crispy outside. would go every day of the week if I didn't want to be skinny.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
I've been here many times, and while this place isn't famous in any right their Chicago firehouse mango spicy burger is my favorite burger. I highly recommend it if it's the only thing you order. Service is good but it's a small bar so it maybe hard to find seats during prime times. I definitely will come back the next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Big Board is a friendly neighborhood beer and burger bar. I've been a few times and it has always been a pleasant experience. As for the burgers, I got had the Great Chicago Fire the two times I've had food there, and it is very tasty. Draft beers are always changing but have generally been good. Overall, a good option for a laid-back bite to eat or beer on H Street.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
We love the Big Board- the Chicago fire burger is amazing and they have great trivia nights on Thursdays! Friendly staff that remembers the names of regulars, and you'll never feel rushed.

Katie V.

Yelp
Finally made it to this fine establishment after reading about the true patriotism of the freedom-loving owner. God took care of them, as Eric stood for what he's about, being a restaurant open to all who eat good food. Being a D.C. native, this touched me deeply. The nice thing is the food is yummy and the service was the best. Bill upstairs made us feel at home. Gluten-free bun, burger cooked how I wanted it, GREAT atmosphere with a welcoming down-to-earth vibe, decent prices and sweet potato fries! If you love freedom and burgers and wings, you MUST check out The Board Restaurant. I'm happy to spend my money here. THANK YOU, ERIC!

Yelp
I've been meaning to write this review for so long. Glad I'm finally getting around to it because The Big Board is the perfect bar. I know everyone says that about their favorite bar but Big Board has all the crucial characteristic: outstanding service (easily the best/friendliest bar staff ever. They'll know what you want before you do), unbelievably good food (see below), ambiance (brown bar meets chill sports bar vibes) and great specials/pricing in general. If you haven't been yet, go today! Try the: - Quebec City burger (pure magic. I don't have pics because it's so hard not to eat immediately) - Chicago Fire Burger - Jalisco Frito (best chicken sandwich period) - Wings!!! I will go there and say best in DC - Sides: onion rings and fried pickles

Yelp
Decided to try a quick dinner around the block from me. The restaurant was not particularly anything special. Standard pub. Because it was a week night so neither my boyfriend nor I wanted to drink anything but the drink menu was extensive. We will likely return again (and I'll update my review then!) to try our some of their beers. The food was good but very greasy. The fried pickles were okay but probably would have been better if they were chopped into more chunkier pieces. The fries were not great at all, small pieces and not very well seasoned. They weren't even crispy . My chicken sandwich was good but greasy. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger. Overall, food would probably have tasted better with some drinks but since we didn't get any, I had to give this place a 3/5 for food alone. Service was good. This restaurant seems to have a decent crowd attraction even on a Wednesday night.

Yelp
I decided to leave this review after seeing "A B." 's post below on the Ciao Bella burger. Political opinions aside, that burger slaps. Clearly the one star is centered around not checking vax cards. Covid has ruined enough, let a good burger be a good burger.

Yelp
Dear Big Board Chef....YOU ARE AMAZING AND WE THANK YOU. Everything I've tried at this spot...it's so freaking good. I've had the burgers, the chicken sandwich, the fried pickles, the catfish nuggets, THE BREADPUDDING...I mean just all really good. The restaurant is located on H and serves food later than most spots on this street! There is bar and seats a good amount of people. Every time I've been, I've had amazing service. They've changed channels for us, moved tables together, pretty much every request has been filled. It's not the prettiest restaurant inside, but it's clean, has AC, and an amazing vibe! This is my favorite burger spot in DC currently. If you're looking for a juicy burger....it's here! You can choose burgers off their menu, which my boyfriend has had 2 and loved, or make your own burgers, which if you're simple like me, this is for you! Every time I go I get the catfish bites, I love the sauce they come with, and the bites are amazing! Finally tried the crispy chicken sandwich recently....and wow! I love it! I've had the chocolate chip bread pudding and the strawberry bread pudding. I just love it so much. I really enjoy this place and always look forward to going.

Yelp
Came in to the Big Board for a quick lunch before my tattoo appointment across the street at Cirque du Rouge. I sat at the bar and ordered the fried catfish, fried pickles, and a glass of water. The fried catfish is served with a chili dipping sauce, whereas the fried pickles are served with a Cajun style Aioli sauce. I preferred the Aioli sauce to the chili sauce - and ended up dipping my Catfish in that. The Catfish was tender and delicious. I was not a fan of the pickles, however. I love a good fried pickle. The problem is - these were sliced so thin - that after frying them - they could have been anything. I could not tell they were pickles! They have a nice selection of craft brews here - will have to come in some time for a beer or three. Service was good. #TheBigBoard

Yelp
I live around the corner, and sadly it just took one visit to figure out that I won't be coming back despite the convenience of the location. Had a ciao bella burger, which I didn't like. Burgers apparently don't come with fries either, which you rarely see at burger places in this price range. It also seemed to attract a really weird crowd for DC. I noticed they didn't check my vaxx card when I entered, which I figured was just an oversight. But I learned afterwards that it's some kind of anti-vaccine political stunt on their part. Maybe that works for attracting out-of-town protester types, but I suspect most people from the neighborhood/DC will find it pretty repugnant and avoid visiting the restaurant. Be aware if you're considering going that this is basically the only restaurant in DC where you can't count on other patrons being vaccinated. Plus they're attracting anti-vax tourists who are likely to be spreading covid around. And you've gotta assume at least some of the staff aren't vaccinated then either. Not worth it for a bad burger!

Yelp
Great burgers but highly recommend Danny's sweet potato fries. The best sweet potato fries I've ever had!

Yelp
I have been here a couple times over the years when we had happy hours and other places on H street were full. The drinks are fine, the food is kind of garbage. im disappointed in management for not following the law and costing his employees their livelihood.
google avatar

Spencer Y.

Yelp
A nice little spot. Got the BBQ wings and was delicious. Got the Chicago Fire Burger and it looked like cat food on top of the burger but it was delicious too. Fries had whatever Maryland type of seasoning on it and it was good too.
google avatar

Henrique T.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant, the burgers are delicious, the service is great, and they have a wonderful drink selections. I will always visit this restaurant when I am in DC.

Yelp
The Big Board is where the stock market meets bar! Try your hand at navigating the trade market of beers in this hip, creative hub for tasty bar bites and brews. The Big Board is the perfect stop for happy hour or late night bites. The affordable specials and happy hour deals set this restaurant apart from the neighboring H Street competitors. The dark and spacious atmosphere is a fun venue for a quick bite to eat or night out with friends and co-workers. I recently was looking for a place for an office holiday happy hour and received fantastic service from Big Board. We were able to reserve the entire top floor bar with no room rental fee or bar tab minimum. This is not always the case for this space, but is doable on a Monday evening. All the happy hour specials applied to the group and there were no additional charges beyond food and drinks. Happy hour runs 5-7pm and beer, wine, and rail drinks are $5, appetizers are $6. Shout out to Andrew for providing our group amazing service all night. Having a separate space and dedicated bar tender made for an awesome experience for the group. We are looking forward to future team events at The Big Board!

Yelp
Good food, great atmosphere. If you're looking for a place to hang out before, after or during a game in DC this is your spot.
google avatar

Russell R.

Yelp
Eric is a great guy, The atmosphere is great for drinks and food. If you're in town, it's a place you have to stop at
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
I was really impressed by their Saturday brunch! Affordable and adhered to a vegetarian and gluten-free dietary restrictions. Steak & Eggs and Parmesan-Bacon Fries - $12 Chimichanga Vegetarian Burger - $7 The service was very kind and attentive. The food was quick to come after we put in the order. The waitress was patient with us as we let her know our dietary restrictions. Atmosphere was a bit loud, but it's a sports bar so that was expected. Casual setting, folks are friendly and we noticed plenty of happy hour and drink specials. I would definitely come back again!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Great place, a little gritty. In a good way. We had a sample of 4 different burgers, all amazing. Thanks onion rings were scrumdiddlyumptious. This place is a perfect burger and bar place right on H St.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Best burger I've had in a long time. Great service and beer selection. Support this great local business!
google avatar

Krista K.

Yelp
I can't disagree more with the reviews stating bad or rude service. I can't speak to the politics of this place (nor do I think that's relevant here), but I did have one of the best burgers I've found in DC so far, and dealt with kind and attentive servers. Overall an excellent experience.
google avatar

Katie Z.

Yelp
This is a nice little bar! The food well priced and delicious, and they had a massive list of draft beers. Their Happy Hour offered good deals on both food and drinks, and it was a nice, casual place to watch a game!

Bruce B.

Yelp
The best burgers, wings and sweet potato fries. The staff is always helpful and polite.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Friendly neighborhood bar. Great service. Great burgers. Laid back atmosphere and knowledgeable bar server.

Paul C.

Yelp
We had been to this restaurant/pub once before and it was pretty wretched. We only realized this after we had been seated, but decided to stay anyway, thinking that things might have improved. Well, no. The French fries were overdone to the point of many being hard. They haven't figured out shoestring yet. The Memphis burger was uninspiring. The onion rings were limp and cold on the burger. The burger seemed to have been frozen and thawed maybe once too many times. We will not return. Despite a thin gathering at the early hour during we were dining, we were ignored for 20 minutes during the meal.
google avatar

Damiah P.

Yelp
Let me start by saying my burger was amazing! Unfortunately the service at the bar left much to be desired. I am not sure if the bartender didn't like us but he certainly gave everyone else there better service. He had the WORST ENERGY EVER TOWARDS MY partner and I. He seems to hungover to us but happy to serve everyone else. Every time we ask him a question he seems to be annoyed with us. My partner asked several questions about the menu and he gave matter-of-fact half answers. While sitting here a woman came into the bar and sat next to us he offered her menus and specials she didn't even have to ask for. He never offered that to us. She could be a regular, who knows or cares but the difference in service is significantly noticed. This was my first time here and I am disappointed!

Tw R.

Yelp
This bar opened in my neighborhood. They don't run a safe establishment and in my experience don't take patron safety or neighborhood safety as a concern, as defined by the neighborhood, and our local ANC. They don't follow rules put in place for every business on H street. I hope the ANC removes their liquor license. The bar is a nuisance to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Dana H.

Yelp
Service was very friendly! The burger was good, but I got the fries because of the old bay advertised and they had zero old bay and were very soggy. I'll try it again and specify add the old bay and see if that helps.

LillianSummer K.

Yelp
I love their Quebec City! So delicious:) cooked perfectly!!!! I wish I could eat here every day. Great fries too. They make great burgers and the ambiance is great:) my friend had the fried pickles, she loved them!!!!!

Jason R.

Yelp
The service and food leaves a lot to be desired. Burger was cold when it arrived and the fries were overdone. Could only take a few bites of each. Too many other good places nearby to bother with Big Board.

Justin R.

Yelp
This is my favorite H Street neighborhood joint. The Chicago Burger is great. Just the right amount of spice. Best thing about the place through is their great selection of beers on tap.

Cam D.

Yelp
In my experience this place is nothing special, you can get similar food a lot of other places near by on H street. What's more, this place is terribly unsafe in terms of COVID protocols. Avoid.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
The burgers at BiG Board are really good quality and well cooked. The service unfortunately does not live up to the burgers. (With a few exceptions, of course) On numerous occasions when calling in an order or asking a question about the venue the staff has been curt and disinterested. In the latest instance I called to place an order and was told to call back 30 minutes later because "the playoffs are on bro." I questioned this because I thought the staff was joking and instead I was hung up on. I still plan to get a burger there when I want a good one but I'll be sure be prepared to feel like I'm troubling them with my mere presence. The best suggestion I can make is to add on-line ordering so I can bypass the attitude and get straight to the dope burgers.
