From my house to the Big Greek Cafe, it's about 8 miles, and along the way, you'll pass by several other Greek restaurants. But, for me, it's worth the trip.
The BGC isn't much of a "restaurant," but more of a cafe, a quick spot to pop in and get take-out, and the menu isn't going to be a wealth of variety. (There is seating, but it fills up quickly). Mostly, you're here for one thing: a gyro. You can also get falafel, and bifteki, and salads, but I'm a gyro kinda guy. You can also order a hamburger, but if you do, I'm not going to ever speak to you again.
They also have a few larger menu items, like a grilled pork platter, but I've never tried this -- maybe some day.
The gyros are great, with well seasoned meat, lots of spices, fresh veggies, and feta, tzawhatsits sauce, and a good pita. They're just awesome. But, I feel like gyros are kind of one of those things where "really good" is fairly normal; there are bad gyro spots out there, but all of the ones that aren't those are kind of on a level field. So, what sets BGC aside?
They have some fantastic sides to go with their gyros. Try the Greek potatoes. And get yourself some dolmades to start off with. These are a grape leaf wrapped around rice and meat, with seasoning, that you squeeze lemon over. They are so delicious, and if you've never had them, give it a try.
I also love that despite being a pretty large chain (with like six locations), I have popped into these locations and talked to The Guy On The Logo. Nick is a little bit older than the cartoon, but he's still the same guy, and an incredibly friendly, nice dude to chat with.
The Norbeck Road location (this one) is a little bit tricky to get in and out of, with a very tight parking lot; especially during busy times, it can be a real pain in the pita bread to get in and out of this location.
