Boston’s Winter 2020 Restaurant Closings | Eater Boston

"After 15 years the Somerville cafe (406 Washington St.) closed its original location due to an "unreasonable landlord," but the owners plan to reopen at a nearby address and have launched a fundraising campaign to support the move." - Terrence Doyle

Boston’s Late 2019 Restaurant Closings | Eater Boston

"Planning to leave its 15-year home at 406 Washington St. in Somerville on December 31, the cafe is running an Indiegogo campaign to help with a move to an undisclosed nearby location and blames an "unreasonable landlord" for forcing the relocation." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Somerville Cafe the Biscuit Is Moving to a New Location After 15 Years | Eater Boston

"After 15 years at 406 Washington St., and six years of fruitless negotiation with an 'unreasonable landlord,' the Biscuit is slated to close on December 31, 2019; the cafe has launched an Indiegogo campaign hoping to raise $150,000 to fund a relocation. Cofounder Andrew Plat says they did not lose the space to a rent increase or demolition but because the owner wants the property empty, and the eviction is devastating for the Biscuit, its many, many employees, and the neighboring community. There is a planned new location a short walk away — a unique, subterranean spot called "Biscuit in the Basement" that will require significant renovation and re-imagination, and campaign donors will receive gift cards of greater monetary value than their donations to be used there when it opens." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

We love going to small, out of the way places to eat. This place did not disappoint. My husband was wondering where I was taking him, but he was impressed with the quality of the food and the great service we received. The food was delicious, and I believe everything was homemade, from the strawberry jam on my plate, to the whipped cream on my husband's French toast. My husband had the Berries and Cream French Toast and an egg sunny side up. He loved it! I had the Mediterranean Scramble, with their homemade biscuit. It was the best scramble I have ever eaten; it was delicious and the seasoning was perfect. The strawberry jam for my biscuit was as good as my homemade jam. Yum! The biscuit was light and moist. Fresh squeezed orange juice! My husband and I are coffee snobs (we even roast our own coffee), the coffee there was good but too light for our liking. The server told us it was supposed to be a med-dark roast, but we --thought it was more tea-like than coffee-like. If you live nearby, or visiting from out of town, make sure you give this place a try. You will love it.

Google
Long wait to be seated for midday on a Tuesday (15-20 minutes). But once seated, the food was sent out pretty quickly and was great! They were out of thier gluten free toast option, but I think its great they usually stock one. The kids animal shaped pancakes are a fun and cute option to have! Pricing is typical diner pricing ($13-15 for an adult meal). Cozy atmosphere and fantastic bakery case where you can grab sweets to go. We got a great carrot cake on the way out!

Google
Super small breakfast and lunch spot. Went early on a Sunday as they got busy very fast. Staff was accommodating to our table of 4. Quick service from friendly staff. Food came out relatively quick even with them filling up tables fast. Waitress was quick and helpful when needed. The food, amazing and fresh.

Lisa B

Google
We (two people) arrived at 9:50 on a Sunday and had our named added to the wait list. We waited 46 minutes for a table. While we waited I could hear the man with the list tell people there would be a forty minute wait which went up to an hour wait and then he would say “about an hour” wait. They food arrive around 15 minutes after we ordered. There are eleven tables, 2 waitresses that I could see. If you like biscuits and gravy this is the place for you. The biscuits are the best I have ever had. Light and fluffy. The gravy is also good. The waitress was quick and friendly.

Google
Food was great and the staff were nice! The wait was long, but it's a small place on a Sunday morning, so that's to be expected. The prices though were pretty extreme for what you get. 2 strips of bacon is $4.50. You could buy an entire package of bacon for that much. Whip cream & strawberries were $3. $40 for a 2 biscuits and 2 pancakes at a little diner is a bit out there. Overall we're happy we went, but probably won't be regulars at that price point.

Zoé B.

Google
Our go to breakfast spot. Everything is always great. The biscuit and gravy 10/10. Eggs Harper Rose is also a top contender.

Google
I honestly love going here, we drive from Grand Rapids to Michigan about 40 minute drive. The food is delicious, the only thing we don’t like is the wait time we have waited sometimes almost an hour to get seated but this is usually on weekends, during weekdays I’ve been with a party of 8 and we where seated right away. Every time we go, I always go for the chicken hash, my kids French toast and my husband biscuits and gravy. A must try is their onion jam!!!!! Please give it a try it’s delicious. We are a family of four and we usually pay just 100 for the meal plus tip. I do get an extra plate to go. So that’s five meals, and 4 drinks but you will definitely leave satisfied.

Google
Drove all the way up here from Elkhart Indiana, It was worth the drive Friendly staff, great food and welcoming atmosphere… Will be back again

Yelp
First,I will say every single employee I encountered was friendly & kind.Which was a nice bonus.....then the food came. My breakfast was absolutely cold. Not even the faintest echo of warmth.I was somewhat stunned because as I said the atmosphere was upbeat & positive.Just not the food.My breakfast companions Pumpkin pancakes were cold too ( although he didn't mind like I did! ).But the pièce de ré·sis·tance was our side order of potato's. Our sad little side order of redskins could have doubled as ice cubes & no one would know the difference. So......if you won't mind the Arctic cold food, give this place a try. Maybe your breakfast will be warm,or Possibly even hot.But for us that day,no such luck!

Yelp
The Migas Scramble with avocado mash and a biscuit on the side was the perfect midday pick me up. The strawberry jam for the biscuit HAD to be homemade, and the biscuit was THE BISCUIT of my dreams. Their quality pays of butter aren't cold, so they smash easily in the little gold foil before spreading. Cholula hot sauce and a glass of O.J. make this a perfect 5-star meal. Server was wonderful and sweet despite being slammed!

Yelp
Had a great breakfast here. I had the chicken and apple hash with two eggs and a biscuit. My friend had the yogurt with fruit bowl and a biscuit. Everything was delicious! The inside is cute with several tables. Service was friendly but on the slow side.
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
This is one of the best brunch restaurants in Holland. Work breakfast and got to sit in a lovely window overlooking the street. Great, friendly, and efficient service and high quality food. I've never been disappointed. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food We came across this restaurant searching online. It is in a cute little section of town with a few other small businesses. There was a wait since it was tulip festival time. We explored the other shops while waiting and popped back in to wait for our table. They have an assortment of unique breakfast combinations. I went with the Benedict with a twist. It has chorizo and a special sauce. My husband had the bangers and mash. Everything was fresh and the biscuits were delicious.
google avatar

Christopher A.

Yelp
Our family decided to stop in here for a cute little breakfast date and we're not disappointed. We tried a wide variety of breakfast dishes and over all everything was really good. We really liked the French toast and biscuits and gravy. Both were fire! Service was solid as well. Overall this is a cute little breakfast spot that we will be back to
google avatar

Wilf R.

Yelp
Such a good place for breakfast, starting with killer coffee and wonderful service with a smile. We had the biscuits and gravy and it was solid, with some eggs and chorizo because we were not going to miss the chance to have freshly made chorizo from across the street! We also had a beautiful plate of French toast, mascarpone cheese and berries - to die for! Thinking about going back and repeat because it was so delicious!
google avatar

Keri B.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast and service! We had Spanish Bennies, chicken apple hash, and a Veggie Hash. All were excellent. Fresh ingredients! There biscuits are incredible with the homemade strawberry jam....so good. We ordered a pancake to share and it was excellent. Whole wheat, light and fluffy, we a slight crisp on the outside-perfect!
google avatar

Benjamin H.

Yelp
This was such a great local breakfast spot. Our server was very sweet and brought everything out to us quickly and accurate to what we ordered. Inside is more of an eclectic farm house vibe and is quite cozy. I ordered the eggs Benedict and my wife had the apple scramble and we both loved our meals. If you're in the neighborhood, you have to check it out!
google avatar

Tara W.

Yelp
Great food in a quaint little area of Holland. Highly recommend. I had a special scramble with spinach, artichokes and goat cheese. It was amazing!
google avatar

Jo Ann W.

Yelp
Waited a really long time for a table, service was awful, and food was lukewarm. Coffee was at the end of it time. The check came quicker than the food as it was the end of their shift. Staff person was not exactly warm & fuzzy.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
The Biscuit is a neat little spot with all day breakfast. Lots of egg dishes from which to choose, and there are several lunch items too. I had the chicken tacos and my wife had an egg dish called Migas. Both were excellent. And the biscuits are excellent. The service is fast and friendly as well. I can see coming back here a lot.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Very nice quaint atmosphere In a small corner of town. The atmosphere is very nice and reminds me of a small town while being in a moderately sized one. The food is from scratch and there's homemade. Obviously the biscuits are the main attraction and our homemade as well. The biscuits are nice fluffy and very tasteful. It did take a long time today to get a waitress over to ask us about drinks. It took so long our food came out first. All we asked for was a coffee, coffee drink, and 2 waters. Fine service after that.
google avatar

Yelp
Hey folks! It's been awhile, but Share-bear is traveling again! Hah! I stopped at this quaint little street with lots of goodies! Most of them were closed, LOL! That's okay though, this girl didn't have time, I had to go to a liquor store later so this was darling! Anyways, our server was so nice. She offered my 10 year old son the BIGGEST pancakes I have ever seen. Picture below for those curious. I loved the Spanish Pennie's, it was so so divine, it had this southern bite to it and it was covered in chiptole holiday sauce... MMM!! I can't even stop thinking about it. Mama's getting old now, she went to the hospital yesterday and they think she doesn't have much time so I brought her with me and she got this gorgeous French fried toast. The pecans on top were so so so yum diddly scrumptious. Hopefully mama liked it, idk if it's close to being her last meal. 8( Anyways, see yall later!

Mike W.

Yelp
It's better than I remember but I still don't think it's worthy of the title "best breakfast in Holland" as some of my friends think. Despite that it's a really nice place.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Delicious! Love that this is a small town diner feel to it. It definitely gives you the home cooking that brings comfort. I ordered the biscuit and gravy and it did not disappoint. The BISCUIT was soft, fluffy and warm and I understand why they're called the biscuit. I plan to bring my husband back here!
google avatar

Barbara F.

Yelp
Probably the Best breakfast I've experienced in West Michigan! Excited to have found this place and I'll be back again and again for more great service and food!

Kelly T.

Yelp
We got here by 12:45 pm and are finishing up by 1:15. I had the BLT scrambled egg dish and my daughter had migas . Both dishes were excellent, service was fast and professional.

Yelp
What a find! We found this gem on Yelp and are so happy we did! My husband ordered the The Irish (bangers and potatoes) and I had the Chicken Apple Bacon Hash. We'd highly recommend both!

Mackenzie F.

Yelp
Amazing food, very friendly staff, cute cottage vibes! The vegetables were all seasoned and cooked to perfection. Cannot wait to come back next season!

Reggie H.

Yelp
Service and food was amazing. There is a reason it's called The Biscuit. I've never had a biscuit so good.
google avatar

Burt J.

Yelp
If you're near downtown Holland, the Biscuit is definitely a place to stop for breakfast. I highly recommend the Lemon Cream French Toast..
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
Biscuits were the bomb but after that service was very slow along with owner coming to table breathing as though she was working extra hard because so many customers. Not really 4 tables to serve , You opened the restaurant that goes with the territory. Very odd interaction and the food was average at best along with burnt potatoes to the point of carbon dating lol ! Won't return but that may have been there objective from the start .
google avatar

CJ M.

Yelp
Amazing! Some of the best food in the area. Descent service and a nice small dining area. Overall, we were super satisfied with this spot and would love to come back soon.

Jenifer P.

Yelp
Always worth the wait at this gem! Service is excellent, coffee is hot and bold and the biscuits live up to the hype! Feels like you're sitting in your grandma's cottage kitchen...if you're grandma made breakfast like this

Yelp
Absolutely top notch place to eat. The staff is incredibly friendly and their service is above and beyond!!!the food is always great. Hats off to the cooks! Always very clean !!! A+++++

Yelp
My first time to the Biscuit. May I start off by saying it has very quaint and cozy atmosphere. With that being said unfortunately that was the highlight of the visit. I had the special the scramble. The potatoes were were old and tough to chew. They appeared delicious but looks can be deceiving. The scramble eggs were nothing to write home about. The service was very disappointing as well. My waitress barely said five words to never smiled or bothered to acknowledge me until she (had ) to take my order. She made a effort when it was time to give me the bill. I did not feel welcomed at all. Although it appeared to be quaint and cozy turned out not so much.. the Biscuit on the other hand was perfect along with the tablespoon of jam they gave me. The whole experience left me thinking that there was no need to go back. That's too bad because I was really looking forward to going.

Lala V.

Yelp
Good food and hometown vibe- unpretentious and aesthetic. But they have never caught on to serving hot food on plates that are not icy cold. In cold seasons in un carpeted rooms, your food is cold too soon.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
This is a very popular breakfast place in Holland & for good reason! When you walk in it feels like you're eating at a someone's house... very casual and cozy, with good food. The restaurant is easy to get to as well. It's tucked away in a little shopping center about 10 minutes from the main downtown area. I was starved once we were seated so I ordered the migas breakfast plate, a side of biscuits & gravy and a hot tea. The migas were tasty, crunchy & flavorful. Definitely ask for extra green sauce on the side. The biscuits & gravy were nice but after trying the biscuit with their strawberry jelly, I would probably just do that next time instead of the gravy. The jelly was delicious!
google avatar

Karissa T.

Yelp
I'm limited to 5, but I'd totally give this 10/5 stars! Best biscuit I've ever had - the jam was also excellent. Biscuits and gravy was delicious - gravy was super flavorful! The chicken apple hash was also amazing! Coffee was great too - not bitter, not too sweet (I ordered an oatmilk latte with honey) Servings were quite large - wish I would have shared instead. But prices weren't bad. Quiet & quaint. Great service. We waited 30 minutes to be seated on a Friday at 11:30am in early August but it was totally worth it. Highly, HIGHLY recommend!!

Natie-Lia H.

Yelp
I always forget about this little downtown block, but a hometown friend suggested we meet up here. It was both our first time at The Biscuit and it did not disappoint! The dishes, the atmosphere, and the pricing is perfect for a quaint family or friend meet up. Although I did not get anything fancy or complicated, I was very pleased with my dish. I have a dairy intolerance, which anyone who deals with that knows how difficult it can be to find an appealing dish with little to no dairy. I extremely appreciated the offering of nondairy milks when it came to their coffee selection because who could pass up their Milky Way latte? The interior of the building reminded me of a place my family used to meet up at to get the grandchildren and grandparents together. The colors gave it a lively feel, and the staff was warm and welcoming from the minute we walked in to the moment we left! When we received the bill I was happy to see that the prices didn't seem too crazy. My husband got the special with a regular cup of coffee and I had ordered the the grain and veggie bowl and a latte all for $45. *Based off memory* we both ordered big breakfast dishes with regular coffees at Cracker Barrel for $35...I think I'm willing to pay an extra $10 to a small business in my hometown. I've already suggested this place to my parents

Yelp
Best French toast anywhere .blah blah blah blah blah blah blah words words text yes 85 characters yet?

Yelp
Ok I'm not making this up or tryna sound pretentious but Edith pilaf's la vie en rose started playing in my head as I ate the pancakes. Highly recommend them, the cinnamon toast with their strawberry jam (which is exquisite) and the Spanish chorizo biscuit- probably the best I've had to date.

Laurie S.

Yelp
First time trying this restaurant and learned that it has been here for 15 years. They have a great story and great tastes and combinations. I wasn't sure that I would like a biscuit with my breakfast but the biscuit was moist and delicious with all the other flavors in the dish. I had the Harper Rose - love the name, I found out named after their daughter. The onion jam was delicious. My husband had the biscuits and gravy with the chicken hash on the side. We were literally humming, enjoying the flavors. Noticing the other patrons seemed to be enjoying the same experience. The staff was lovely and so efficient. We noticed her calling some patrons by name. We liked the vibe and the interior was decorated comfy and clean. We have already told the whole family to go. This is our vacation spot but we will be going back for sure! Thank you!

Annabelle V.

Yelp
The food was bland. The only thing I liked was the fried egg. One of my friends ordered pancakes but ended up getting a cinnamon swirl that later was replaced with their pancakes, the worst thing about it is that HE DID NOT GET A DISCOUNT FOR THE MESS UP. All of the restaurants I've been to give a discount when they mess up an order. Not giving a discount for a meal mess up is RUDE. The ambiance is good though.
google avatar

Elise B.

Yelp
Pretty good brunch option in Holland if you want to avoid chain restaurants. We got in early, by 9AM on a weekend, and we didn't have to wait. Service was friendly and coffee refills were quick. I got the chicken apple hash which was good but honestly it had maybe 1 or 2 chunks of chicken. I got egg whites with no hassle. The biscuit was good, they appear to offer a special biscuit flavor daily. They also had a case of baked goods that looked wonderful. I got a pot of loose leaf tea to drink which was nice!
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Great food, the waitress was so kind and personable! Loved the old cafe atmosphere and the small downtown area! Grandchildren loved the pancake shapes. Will come back.
google avatar

Kayla D.

Yelp
Very warm and friendly atmosphere. Limited menu, but had great options! Several Mexican breakfast options were available - my favorite! Could have had a tinge bit more of flavor, but overall satisfied with my meal.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
Such a yummy little breakfast spot just outside of the downtown Holland area. It was a super cold, snowy morning so our wait was only 15 minutes on a Saturday morning, which is likely not typical! I ordered the Spanish bennie. The chipotle Hollandaise was what I like to call "West Michigan spicy" which is to say, flavorful but not anything someone could define as too spicy if they are at all afraid of heat. Totally not a complaint though, because the chorizo and cheese layered on their biscuit pleasantly soaked into my biscuit, creating a filling and satisfying breakfast on a winter day. They source their chorizo from a local maker and it is delicious! My friend said the only thing that would make his plate of migas better would be even more migas! My hubby was very happy with his choice of cinnamon swirl French toast and I should have stolen a bite. My other friend enjoyed her chicken apple hash and raved about the strawberry preserves that were served with her biscuit. 100% would recommend
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
Still the best breakfast place anywhere. Great food, Great service and reasonable pricing! The menu is so creative. Highly recommend the Biscuit!

Yelp
It is hard to get a table here, but when you get one it is a treat. Our favorites: Breakfast tacos Vegetarian hash Pancakes with lemon marscapone cream and berries and fat fluffy biscuits

Yelp
Family was in from out of town for the weekend and we met up at The Biscuit my daughter put her name in we waited 40 min to be seated. The place was so small it should be just a coffee house/cafe but the reviews were good so we took the chance since we were planning to visit and had no hurry. We had 5 of us at a table we ordered cappuccinos and our food, each of us received our cappuccinos about 10-15 min apart our food took about 45 min after our last drink arrived we drank our coffee in shifts lol and after waiting for our food which was okay. A couple of us were still eating and a teen came asking for our plates, before we were finished eating. Then 2 of us left the table and 3 were still there as we were waiting to take a turn to use the one and only restroom which we noticed had been occupied. A older man who was possibly a manager came to our table and said we have 2 more who need a table and your time is up please leave the table so we can clean it and seat someone. There were 2 other empty tables so that was super rude and weird. Someone at the table near us seen and heard the man say that and said I don't believe he just said that to you! We all said I know!! We both agreed the service was terribly slow and after the comment from the man we said we would not be returning.
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Cozy little breakfast spot tucked in the heart of Holland. It might not seem like much on the outside but the food SLAPS! The service is fast and our server was very attentive. You get quality food for an affordable price. Space is very limited so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some wait time on the weekends. Also kid-friendly! It's a nice place to frequent for a quick bite whether you're a 3rd shifter or just need to catch up with friends. I got the Nutella French toast. It's not overly sweet like I thought it would be, which is good. The mascarpone/Nutella mix was very rich and decadent. It normally comes with a sort of berry medley but I requested only strawberries. It was so good but I could barely finish.
google avatar

Ima H.

Yelp
DO NOT ORDER THE "SMASHED AVOCADO". It is not avocado; it some kind of mystery green food that comes presmashed. Anyone who has ever made guacamole or sliced avocado knows that it turns brown after a couple of hours. This is disingenuous and misleading. If they won't use real avocados, they should say that in the menu. I feel like I've been swindled and was served a low quality item in place of the item I ordered. UNACCEPTABLE!!
google avatar

Rob H.

Yelp
45 minute wait, but worth every minute. I had the biscuits & gravy with a side of potatoes. It made for delicious breakfast to go alongside the coffee. I mean, how could I go to a place named the Biscuit and not get biscuits & gravy. My wife had the Eggs Harper Rose and raved about the onion jam. We'll be back on our next trip to Holland.
google avatar

Bridget F.

Yelp
My mom and I found this hidden gem a couple of years ago when my dad was in Holland Hospital; before I began Yelping. My parents, son, husband and myself went late this morning for breakfast. We had about a 15 minute wait because they are still practicing social distancing which I appreciate! My mom and I both had Eggs Harper Rose. It's the perfect combination of savory and sweet! We ordered our eggs over medium and they were a little overdone but, the meal was still delicious! My dad had pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage patties; he enjoyed all of it. My son had Lily's Chicken Apple Hash with Cranberry Raisin Toast while my husband had Migas and added avocado; both dishes were a hit! My son and husband couldn't stop raving about the homemade strawberry jam. Service was prompt and refills never needed to be asked for- we can't wait to go back!!!
google avatar

Rachel V.

Yelp
Great breakfast stop. Had to wait 20min for a table but it was worth it. We ordered a kids menu French Toast and Yogurt with Fruit. Both we extremely tasty and the kids finished their plates. The 2 pieces of French toast pieces were huge and it came with sausage. But I wouldn't say this place is great for kids because they handed us menus that they could color on but never gave us any crayons, even after we asked. Just seemed like a place for adults. Our adult entrees were Spanish Bennies, and Migas Scramble. My Migas Scramble was incredibly delicious with so many flavors. Salty, spicy, smooth from the eggs and crunchy from tortilla strips. I tried so hard to finish it but it was a ton of food. And it comes with a biscuit. That biscuit was delightful and soft. Fresh and warm. It came with raspberry preserves which made it a sweet addition to the Migas. The taters were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Crispy but soft inside. My partner didn't adore his Spanish Bennies dish because he envisioned something different. The eggs were not poached and he really wanted it to be more like eggs Benedict. But he did say it was good. When I'm back in town, I will be back to try the Lily's Chicken Apple Hash. Mouth watering already.
google avatar

Trish S.

Yelp
Nothing fancy because they do not need to be! As you might guess by the name - the biscuits are everything! We tried the apple hash and it was yummy, but completely outahined by the fluffy biacuit with homemade strawberry jam. A little off the beaten path of downtown, this felt like a local place with people popping in and out the entire time.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best breakfasts I've ever had! This local joint has incredible breakfast food, cooked with good fresh ingredients and lots of love! My wife had the the peach Melba French toast special, it was so tender and flavorful. Absolutely mouthwatering and delicious. I had the breakfast tacos, with chorizo from the specialty chorizo shop across the street. It was bussin as the kids say these days. I'm not a breakfast guy, but the biscuit may have just made a convert out of me!
