No doubt that Sixth and Mission has always been a rather checkered intersection, and right next to a long-standing porn store on the corner (where you can "Explore the Passion!") is 996 Mission Street, which has housed at least four different eateries in the past decade. Chinese takeout with Fu War and Spicy Garden. Most recently it was Vegan Filipino fare at Nick's. Now it's serving Mediterranean fast food, and I like the food. It appears the new owners kept the muted decor Nick set up, and it works.
The menu focuses on hummus, pita wraps, salads, and rice bowls. I immediately gravitated toward the $12.99 Mighty Kale, a big salad festooned with thick slices of red beets, mandarin orange segments, walnuts, and chopped dried apricots. I had them add quite a dollop of chicken gyros for an additional $4.99 (photo: https://bit.ly/3mRwBJJ). It actually came with four different dressings, though it didn't need any since the ingredients were flavorful on their own. It was delicious, just the right entree salad on a rainy night during a pandemic.
I also tried the $7.99 Sautéed Eggplant, baked, mashed and mixed with tomato sauce and butter (photo: https://bit.ly/3zqGS4C). A bit mushy but I liked it, especially to scoop up with the pita wedges (photo: https://bit.ly/3FYO6PH). On a separate night, I tried the $11.99 Vegan Wrap which took full advantage of their fluffy pita bread to encase the hummus, mixed greens, and sautéed mushrooms that acted as the vegan gyros (photo: https://bit.ly/3FUNvi3). Here's hoping The Bite lasts longer than the last four cafes. I could use a dependably healthy option in the neighborhood.
