Boston’s Best Ice Cream Sandwiches and Other Frozen Treats | Eater Boston

"An old-fashioned soda fountain on Newbury Street that pairs classic fountain fare with a small but creative roster of ice cream sandwiches; standout offerings include an orange creamsicle (brown sugar cookies filled with orange-vanilla ice cream swirled with orange zest) and the "fat banana" (peanut butter cookies with banana ice cream). The shop’s retro soda-fountain vibe complements its nostalgic-yet-upgraded treats." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

### Review: Bittersweet Shoppe on Newbury Street I recently stopped by Bittersweet Shoppe on Newbury Street for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, and it was an absolute delight! The space is incredibly cute and charming, with a clever layout that maximizes seating in what could otherwise feel like a quirky, confined area. Somehow, they manage to fit everything in without making you feel like you're on top of your neighbors—it's cozy without being cramped, perfect for a quick bite or a relaxed coffee break. One standout feature is their gluten-free bread substitutions, which made it easy for my friend to customize her order. I went with the grilled cheese sandwich featuring bacon, dill pickles and it was perfection on a plate. The bread had a beautiful golden crust with just the right crunch, and the portions were spot-on—generous amounts of gooey cheese, crispy bacon, and tangy pickles that balanced each other beautifully without overwhelming the sandwich. Paired with a tasty cup of coffee that was smooth and not burnt at all, it hit the spot exactly as I needed. They also have a lot of great options on the menu, which makes it even more appealing. If you're strolling down Newbury Street and craving something comforting and well-executed, Bittersweet Shoppe is a gem worth visiting. I'd love to go back and try more—highly recommend! 5 out of 5 stars.

Super cute lil cozy shoppe vibe! Great customer service & delicious food. I ordered the dill pickle grilled cheese (with no bacon) served with chips. 10/10 loaded with cheese and the sourdough was grilled to perfection!

TLDR: Coffee - 5⭐️ - Dark Roast drip was excellent! Food - 4.5⭐️ - Choc croissant, Apple danish, Blueberry muffin Review: Coffee here was very good, and they had a dark roast, not everywhere does. The food was very good, with a lot of choice. Overall, would recommend for coffee or food.

Bittersweet Shoppe is definitely my favorite cafe in Back Bay! Staff is super nice and the atmosphere is cute, great outdoor space too right on Newbury St. Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious (I like to sub the croissant with an English muffin) and come with a side of fruit, perfect for a little breakfast picnic. Their grilled cheese sandwiches are perfectly cooked and taste amazing. Their banana cream pie and coconut cream pie overnight oats are both fantastic and I can’t wait to keep trying more from their menu. So happy to have found this local small business!!

Delicious food. Got the raspberry chocolate specialty ice coffee and it was one of the best coffees I’ve had. Also got tomato basil balsamic grilled cheese with tomato soup and it was the best grilled cheese in my whole life and I am a grilled cheese GIRL. So definitely recommend. Not a lot of seating and can get busy. Other coffee in the photo was cold brew French vanilla and my friend said it was good. You cannot substitute the side of chips with the tomato soup (which is fine) so that’s a separate charge. Friend also got spinich and feta bites , mini donuts, caramel toffee coffee, egg frittata. Everything was good! Only thing was the caramel toffee was not as sweet as she expected. Wonderful!

What a cute little cafe!! I randomly walked into this cafe and so glad that I did. Didn't look at the menu or the reviews, just walked in. Service is really quick and the barista was really kind to all the customers. I got the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Latte and Spinach and Feta Croissant. The croissant was warm, flaky and delicious. The latte was on the sweeter side but still delicious. From the looks of it, seems like all the syrups are house-made. I would definitely come back and maybe try the strawberry shortcake flavored coffee.

We found this place while exploring Newbury Street in Boston. Ambience is ok and they have a good selection of happy hour drinks which are well-priced too. They have a good outdoor seating which I’d recommend.

A cafe that serves hot chocolate, pastries, specialty cakes made on site, and pure American cuisine - perfect for sitting in or even for a picnic in front of the Mystic River on the walking trail.
