How Beyoncé Helped the Houston Rodeo Celebrate Black Cowboy Culture | Eater Houston

"I’ve learned through Rosenberg’s Black Cowboy Museum about Larry Callies’ decades-long work to surface the names and stories of Black cowboys who were erased from mainstream Western history, a crucial effort that reconnects community memory to the contributions of Black Texans." - Kayla Stewart

I visited the Black Cowboy Museum on Tuesday around 11:30am, right after flying in from Chicago. I had seen it on social media and made a point to come to the Houston area specifically to experience it for myself. I really wanted to learn about the real history of cowboys in this country and their true origins. Although I didn’t have a guided tour scheduled, I was fortunate to meet the founder, Mr. Larry Callies, who personally gave me an amazing tour. He was incredibly knowledgeable, welcoming, and shared powerful historical context through the stories he told. The museum itself is an inspiring space and a treasure for anyone interested in African American history and the contributions that shaped this country. A huge thank you to Mr. Callies for founding this important establishment—your museum truly spoke to me and touched my spirit. I highly recommend a visit!

Coming from San Antonio, and visiting Rosenberg, I looked up things to do. I found the black cowboy museum & I was not disappointed. Mr Larry Callies gave my son and I a tour, he was very warm, welcoming and informative. I learned so much history, and some of the items on display brought back childhood memories. I definitely recommend stopping in for a visit. Mr Callies even showed my son how to rope! We purchased his coloring book for the information and activities on the road home. My only regret was not having Mr Larry sign his autograph. I told family members about the museum and i definitely hope they stop in for a visit as well.

I visited The Black Cowboy Museum on a Saturday at 2:00 p.m. I was coming from out of state so I called the museum ahead of time and was able to schedule a 1-on-1 tour with Larry Callies. Mr. Callies was very hospitable, knowledgeable, and funny! I believe the tour lasted about an hour and half. I definitely recommend visiting. Some facts will likely surprise you!

This jewel is a wonderful part of Rosenberg and Fort Bend county! There are some many black historical facts to see and learn about. Our tour guide, Michael, was so knowledgeable, patient, and simply a wonderful guide. It has so many historical artifacts, things that this newer generation should be educated about. I highly recommend a visit to the Black Cowboy Museum for all people and all cultures. This is all a part of US History that we all can enjoy!

Incredibly informative space packed with artifacts sharing the erased history of black cowboys. If you are lucky, spend time with founder Cowboy Larry for an unforgettable story telling experience.

I am very glad that I decided to make the drive to Rosenberg Texas to visit the Black Cowboy Museum. I passed it driving and had to circle back since I was expecting a stand alone building. I had to use navigation to get to location but once there, noticed there was plenty parking. Being the only person at the museum at the time, I received a personal tour from Mr. Larry Callies. He began to share the stories behind several of the items in the Museum and stories about the cowboys that were unknown to me before my visit. I do not recall how much the entry fee was but considering how valuable the information was, the entry fee was a bargain. The museum in small is size but it packed with artifacts. I left after 2 hours because I had another appointment but not because I ran out of things to see or bc Mr Larry ran out of things to talk about. I plan to visit again and bring others :-)

This is a hidden gem in a small strip center. The founder, Larry Callies, grew up in a family of cowhands, rodeo riders and musicians. His love of family and history is evident in every photo, document and antique. Well worth the drive to Rosenberg.
