I brought my family here for lunch for nostalgia as they’d never been & have heard me speak of the Black Dog for many years. Unfortunately it was during the 1st heat wave of the year. Hoping to catch some relief from the heat when we went inside, we were very disappointed to find they had all the windows open and no air conditioning on. I was literally sweating from head to toe. No breeze today. Not even a fan for some relief for those sitting by the opened windows. The waitress was very polite and professional. Her speed was appreciated. We ordered the Cobb Salad with Grilled Chicken, the Shrimp Fra Diavolo, and they special-made a Grilled Cheese sandwich. The food was served in small portion size. The shrimp pasta was a bit spicy for my hubby, but he did eat the whole thing. I would have liked more greens on my plate but it was delicious. My daughter thought the Grilled cheese and sides were delicious. We found we were still hungry only a couple hours afterwards. I believe they’re overpriced for what we received; mainly paying for the brand rather than the food. We probably won’t be returning and really don’t recommend if you’re really hungry.

My daughter and I really enjoyed dining here after lots of walking on the Vineyard. We loved the New England, tavern-style ambience and the delightful view of the ships on the harbor. We decided to get the mac and cheese and found it to be incredibly delicious—comfort food after a long day of sight-seeing, what a treat! I would say there is limited seating (more tables for 2 or 4) and I would imagine it’s very busy in the summer months, but we were off-season so we got a table immediately. Thanks again for a great experience!

This by the water small tavern is an excellent place to sit down and have excellent tasting food and drinks to go with that in a very cozy environment. It has a small menu but everything seems to made fresh, in house, and as per your order. We had very tasty cod fish and red snapper prepared as per the menu entry. Appetizer we had was the calamari. Size is sharable by two and the marinara sauce comes warm, enhancing the taste of the very lightly fried squid rings that are juicy soft, definitely not fried to dry crunchiness. Prices are reasonable for fresh seafood. If you are on the island even for a day, I highly recommend the Black Dog for good food and friendly experience.

Google
The Black Dog Tavern, while conveniently located near the Steamship Authority, left much to be desired. Our party of six was squeezed onto a bench clearly designed for four, making for an extremely cramped and uncomfortable experience. Given the poor seating, we decided to just have some quick snacks and drinks and leave early to catch an earlier ferry. We ordered the clam chowder, which was unfortunately a big disappointment — it was 'sandy' and had barely any clams. The drinks we ordered were just average. While the service was notably quick and accommodating to our need to catch the ferry, the overall experience was not good and we wouldn't recommend it.

Google
We ordered winter salads, and mine had grilled chicken on top. However, the chicken came all chopped up on top of the salad. I wasn't expecting that. It was a good portion as I couldn't eat it all and had leftovers that evening. The reuben sandwich was good, but mom thought there wasn't a lot of meat on it.

I really wanted to enjoy this place 😔 Let’s start with the positive; - Great location - Great, friendly servers - Great views - Great menu Despite these things my experience, it was only my first was very lackluster. I went with a group of 8, 4 kids and 4 adults, and they were very accommodating. Our server was friendly and the menu looks great. However, of no fault to the server the kitchen was SLOW. We went for breakfast and we got we all got the French Toast French and some other basic breakfast dishes like bacon & eggs, omelets and toast. We got our food over 70 mins after ordering and the place wasn’t that busy. On top of that the bacon was burnt beyond recognition. Maybe I caught them on an off day. Based on the location and service I would try them again to see if I just caught them on an off day.

Google
love the black dog. zack and tyler are top tier service. they treated us like family and we felt so welcomed. the food is great, the view is even better. and trivia is so fun!!! won $50. run to the black dog, you won’t regret it.

Google
An iconic brand and historic spot! Worth going once just for the experience. Our service was wonderful - fast, attentive, knowledgeable, etc. The food itself was candidly nothing special. And I really wanted to be obsessed with the hot buttered lobster roll, but it was disappointing. The lobster was a bit tough and mildly warm. And the fact that it cost $42 just made that sting a little bit more. The clam chowder was delicious. The burger and tuna melt was solid. The atmosphere was vibrant and it certainly is a kid friendly place although don’t look for a kid menu. However, our waitress was happy to give us plenty of kid friendly options.

Yelp
Amazing food! Huge portions! Good service! Came here on a Friday night with family on vacation. The restaurant was more on the quiet side but we might have been apart of the late crowd and missed the earlier dinner rush. Dinner was accompanied by a great music duo! If you're questioning where to go for dinner, go here!

Yelp
You have to come to this place because it's a Martha's Vineyard staple. It's almost like a mini town with different buildings on its grounds. There's a kid's store, a tavern, a restaurant, a marina, a store, and what looked like a dilapidated building (adds to the rustic charm I guess ? ). THE FOOD: The restaurant food is alright. There are some good dishes and some mediocre ones. I ordered a Lobster Benedict and wow was that yummy. It was a big plate and there were good size pieces of the lobster. Good stuff. I wish I had stopped there because the second dish I ordered sucked. The second dish I ordered was the "stuffed French toast". Imagine that someone brought you a pancake made out of soggy sand with a few blueberries and some white paste in between the pancakes. Worst French toast in the history of French toasts. They advertise "fresh" orange juice. There was nothing fresh about it. Maybe it's the fact that they don't have oranges growing in Martha's Vineyard that they think they can get away with calling carton bought orange juice fresh. I've lived in South Florida for 30 years and know what freshly squeezed oranges taste like. It was a disappointment because I only order orange juice in restaurants when they are freshly squeezed. THE SERVICE: We were a group of 12 and were seated within minutes of us arriving. I don't know if we got lucky because it was early ( 9 a.m. ) but we were all pleasantly surprised the area they made for us was snug but perfect. Our waitress was great. She took care of the whole table. Two days later we were going on a boat tour (that sucked, more on that later) and we placed a large food order for us to eat on the boat tour. The order was done at another Black Dog and they forgot my clam chowder and gave us zero utensils for 12 ppl. Luckily I was hungry before the boat ride and searched for my food. I went into this Black Dog with our receipt and the guy at the hostess stand was very nice and helpful. I got my clam chowder within minutes. EXTRA ACTIVITIES: The kid's store was cute. It had stuffed black dog toys, they were so adorable that I had to get one. They had Black Dog mugs, shirts, purses, etc. We booked a 2hr boat tour on a sailboat. Don't waste your money. If you came on the ferry (and chances are that you did) then you did a slightly more interesting and fun boat tour. Let's just say that the sailboat we went on had no sail and went much much slower than the ferry. There was nothing to see just the same old houses that you see everywhere on the island. The captain called it a party boat... there was no party. Promised to put some whale song, never heard a thing during the 2 hr tour. At least there was water, cheese, and crackers being passed around. Btw, you have to get on a much smaller boat to get to the big sailboat and the other way around when leaving.

Yelp
We recently visited the black dog on Martha's Vineyard, a beloved and iconic spot on the island as you pull up on the ferry. The place has a charming, platnation-like atmosphere, which I found quite appealing. What I didn't realize before arriving was the reason my daughter was obsessed about going here, and that it was a distillery and winery, producing their own unique products. When we arrived we put our names in for a place to sit. Within 10 minutes they called our names and put us over in the pub area outside which was nice. I also learned an intriguing piece of trivia Taylor Swift wrote a song about the black dog, inspired by a location on the island where she spent time with a past boyfriend (always about a boyfriend :) ). While I'm not a "Swiftie," it was still a fun tidbit to discover. During our visit, I sampled some of their offerings, including the wine and a 12-year old aged rum. The rum was particularly impressive and might be the oldest I've ever tasted from an aged rum. It was exceptionally smooth and flavorful. Overall, The Black Dog provided a delightful experience with its unique products and rich history. Our server at the bar was excellent as well, when I arrived before we put our names in, I asked about the rums and he let me sampled them all. They were all good but 12 years is a limited amount, so that intrigued me.

Julisa H.

Yelp
Dog friendly and the dog snacks we're a hit with my dog. The coffee and donut were good, service was efficient. Black dog tavern seems to be a MV staple, no complaints from me.

Rodney M.

Yelp
We must have timed it wrong. Actually able to walk in for a table of 2 as others had to wait. Little did we know that it would take almost 60 minutes to see our food. Server did share that the food was coming and there was a back up. When our food arrived (salad and crab cakes) Tables around us who sat after us also got food. The remoulade on top of the crab cakes had dried a bit. Over all it was ok. Probably not on my list to come back. Bummer, I was truly excited about it.

April K.

Yelp
Stopped by on a very hot day for drinks. They accommodated our request to sit on the outside patio at a 4 person table. It was lovely, lots of flies by the dumpster area but that's to be expected. That had all the fans going outside so we were able to cool down but God bless that staff working in the hot kitchen all day, it was blazing & humid outside so I can imagine how that kitchen was feeling. Thanks to our lovely server, April, she hydrated us with the goods & we were one our way. The food that was coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. Can't way to go back in our next trip with our kids.

Udyot K.

Yelp
Hands down the best Mac and cheese with buffalo chicken I have ever had. Mac and cheese was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh while buffalo chicken was adequately flavorful. Service was quick and the waitress suggested great cocktails. The restaurant is located right along the ocean with great views.

April N.

Yelp
Their clam chowder comes with croutons that elevate the dish! Located near their general store, bakery and gear, even their food paper has the iconic black dog on it. No wait time but service was slow.

Kelley M.

Yelp
all of our food was amazing, drinks were very good. We got a variety. Food was extremely fresh server was great ambience was fun lots of locals and tourist.

Jacquie C.

Yelp
We had to stop for a snack at the original Black dog tavern. Authentic old feel. Warm and welcoming service. We only tried the ceviche and had a drink but the food coming out of the kitchen looked really good and we enjoyed our visit. Nice water view too.

Paul A.

Yelp
The best breakfast on the vineyard!!!!!! The dinner menu especially the hot honey chicken will fill you up but want you asking for more at the same time!!!!

Marisa A.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Perfect casual brunch with lots of seafood touched options. Service was accommodating and friendly. Brunch with a view and relaxed vibe.

Kathy B.

Yelp
We come to the Island every 2 years and we make a point (as a tradition since 1992) of having a meal at the Black Dog. And I never fail to be disappointed. Even as I work my way through the menu, hoping to find something delicious, , I fail in my relentless search. This week, I had the worst Reuben I've ever had (and I've had lots of them.) I don't know how you can ruin a Reuben, , except with tough slices of meat as this one was. Oh well, maybe next time...*sigh*

Yelp
We were visiting Martha's Vineyard last week and were looking for a good lunch spot. We decided on Black Dog. We came and were seated immediately. We were surprised it wasn't too busy at lunch time. To start, we both got the clam chowder. Delicious! They were so good and croutons were so flavorful. It is definitely worth being their "signature" dish. For lunch, we both got the fried cod sandwich with fries. It also came with coleslaw and a pickle. The sandwich was huge and the Cod was very fresh. To drink, I got the passion fruit mojito but unfortunately it didn't really have the passion fruit flavor. There was no sweetness only sour. My boyfriend got the red hot papa mule and he liked it. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and visit. Our only gripe is their was no AC inside and even with all the windows open it was still a little hot inside. We weren't really near any fans either. However, I loved looking out the window to watch the boats go by. I definitely recommend coming here for a nice lunch!

Payal M.

Yelp
Potentially the best Mac & cheese I've had in my life was here. It's listed as a chef's special on the menu and I highly recommend trying this. We added Cajun fried chicken to the Mac & cheese it was wonderful! Portion size was larger than average and it was enough for two decently hungry people. Cocktails were okay. The syrup in the cocktail had spilled all over the outer walls of the glass making the glass sticky to hold and not a pleasant experience at all. Although it was early in the tourist season when we visited, the place was unusually quiet as compared to the other open restaurants around. As a result, the place gave me a slow and slightly dull vibe but that may not be the case in peak season. Location is good; very close to the steamship ferry port at vineyard haven and the restaurant is sea-facing. Service was good.

Meghan O.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in on a Monday night before catching our ferry. Service was great, not too pushy and let us take our time deciding. For food we each got the clam chowder which was really good. On the thinner side but very flavorful- wasn't a fan of the croutons on the top, but that's just me. We also split an order of bruschetta and calamari- both were superb. Inside it's very old New England, dark wood, dimly lit. But cozy Check it out if you're in the area!

Dorothy W.

Yelp
Surprised to get a table for 6 on a Saturday morning. Seated immediately and given menus. Server took our beverage order and returned with water as well. Waited a long time for our order to be taken. Waited even longer for a coffee refill. Food came out eventually. My eggs were overcooked, sausage cold but my potatoes were hot and crispy. They certainly need more help. Atmosphere hasn't changed over the years. Needs a good cleaning.

Pam L.

Yelp
Cool old building on the water. Food very overpriced and underwhelming. Probably the worst calamari I've ever had. I think it was frozen. Honestly can't remember my meal...that means it was not memorable.

Joseph S.

Yelp
I am so disappointed in BDT. We went there for lunch yesterday, it was really really weak and guess what, they don't allow dogs. We hadn't been there in years but just got off the ferry, never again. Salad was a rip off, burger was mid, crab cake tasteless. This is how legacy restaurants go down.

Brian M.

Yelp
They wouldn't allow me to dine with my dog. MV in general seems very dog unfriendly. I won't be back any time soon, I'll spend my $$$ elsewhere

Nina S.

Yelp
Stopped in after arriving from the ferry. Wooden and nautically themed but more heart-warming with the Christmas decor. Ordered: Fried Calamari: loved that they used the main body and the tentacles, gave good contrast while eating the whole lot of them, it didn't have the cherry pepper or onions as written on the menu so that was missing Lobster Roll: MP on this day was $42, fresh, toasted bun, average the best fries I've ever had such a unique lightly panko'ed crumb? on the outer shell, gotta get the fries My only complaint: I certainly felt like an outsider, front staff forgot to bring menus when seating us (even when I watched her get menus for the party right in front of ours) so I had to go back and grab those, and the waitress was clearly jovial and took her time to talk/answer questions) to other parties while my experience felt much curter with questions rushed in passing. Maybe these other parties were long-time customers but it was still slightly disappointing. The food is good and in a convenient location. Plus who can't resist the pull of The Black Dog everywhere? Would try again.

Diana N.

Yelp
Partner and I were on Martha's Vineyard and knew we should check out the Black Dog Tavern for the novelty. Had the calamari and the fish and chips. Both large in portion and solid. Service was attentive even though it was busy.

Yvette B.

Yelp
The food & drinks here are honestly quite good, but the staff was so rude it was laughable. They definitely do not prioritize customer service, but the food was good enough for me to give it 3 stars. If you're in it for the dining experience, I would not recommend but if you're just in it for the food/drink then go for it!

Matt S.

Yelp
Showed up and asked for an outdoor table. Hostess said it was a 20-25 minutes. I said perfect, do you need a name? She said no, just go hang by the bar and I'll let you know when it's ready. Sounded strange but said sure, thanks. Waiting by the bar and after 25 mins go back and ask how much longer because kids are starving. While we're waiting to ask, a group comes up and asks for a table of three outside and she say oh yes, we have a table for you now. So we get up there and she says 15 minutes more and I'm like wait but you just told that party of three there was a table now and she says oh no they're a table of eight. That's the table of three there and points to a completely different group of people. I'm like I'm pretty sure that's not true. And she's like well I can seat you inside now or you can wait. Grabbed the table inside because at that point kids are hungry. Otherwise food and service was okay but may want to look for a new hostess.

Kerrie H.

Yelp
Delicious food coupled with hot tea (hard to find) and an amazing tea selection from mighty tea. Service was great and we were treated to live music on the water, which was a pleasant surprise! The prime rib was amazing and we also had the garlic crusted cod (so fresh) and fish and chips (even the fries were divine). Will come back next trip to MV

Mrs. C.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant on MV. So old school, it's been here forever & we've been coming since the early 80s. Stopped in for a quick lunch recently right after we arrived, hauling our weekend bags. Short wait, as it was a summer weekend & should be expected then. PRO - The chowder was very good. Served in a mug with unusual, salad like croutons on top. Ward got the steamed mussels which he thought were very good & nicely served with grilled bread. Both of us enjoyed our drinks, my wine & his IPA. CON- It's TIGHT inside. Be aware of that. And like everyplace, they seem a bit short of help, so you have to be patient. SO-Great view of the boats coming & going, old school MV, good drinks, you can walk over from the Ferry, I love this place.

Ibrahim M.

Yelp
You cannot go wrong with this place. Absolutely incredible. There's a portion of restaurant over looking the beach and also a patio on the back. Plenty of seating. I had lobster Benedict with home fries. These home fries are the best thing that'll touch your taste buds. Give yourself enough time. Come in early in the morning for breakfast. Food has always been consistent with taste. Compliments to the chef. You will not regret coming here. Plenty to do if there's wait time. There's black dog shops around, walk on the beach. DO NOT BE AN IMPATIENT PERSON. ITS MARTH'S VINEYARD, DON'T KILL THE VIBE #dontbethatperson

Jakob C.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by the Black Dog Tavern. On the surface, it's a whole tourist experience. The gift shop, bakery, lawn games, and clothing stores are usually a red flag for some mediocre, over-priced food. The dishes were on the more expensive side, but I was very satisfied with the service and quality. The menu is simple. A couple fish and upscale American dishes done well. I got the Red Snapper entree with a 12-year aged rum sauce. It was slightly over cooked to my liking, but still flavorful. I also tried the BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese, filet mignon, BBQ wings, and bruschetta. Everything was tasty and the portion sizes were perfect. This place was also packed on a Tuesday night, but we were seated right away by the water. Service was quick and our waitress provided some great drink recommendations. Only reason I won't give 5 stars is for the prices. I know it's Martha's Vineyard and it's expected that everything should be expensive. But paying upwards of $30 for every single entree is a little wild.

Julia C.

Yelp
The Black Dog Tavern is a Vineyard staple! The food is casual and very good. Coffee and their famous chowder are served in the cutest Black Dog mugs (I loved them so much I brought one home with me from the gift shop!). Dining here is a very pleasant way to start or end your day on the Vineyard.

Morgan K.

Yelp
Best breakfast on the island! They definitely get busy but it's worth the wait. The food is amazingly tasty, especially the lobster omelet. If you get a seat at the window it's a very nice view. We were very happy with the service as well. Definitely recommend

Daniela C.

Yelp
This is by far one of my favorite places on the island. If you are looking for a place to have breakfast with a wonderful view and wonderful ambiance, I recommend the Black Dog Tavern. They have plenty of options on their menu, and the place is amazing, has lots of personality. Love it!

Robert B.

Yelp
The Black Dog's price list and poor reviews kept me away and it's solid bakery prompted me to give it a shot. Overall this is likely a one and done, despite its legendary status. Off season there is no line. The service was prompt and professional, not warm and fuzzy. To be fair I got there at 8 and many other places were closed. The burger was exceptional. The meat was high quality and it was cooked to perfection. The promoted sauce was, thankfully, not a factor. The French fries were inedible. The promised onion rings absent. In the end a burger and a beer broke $30. The price point, even at island rates is off by $10. File under not worth the $$.

Angeline D.

Yelp
We wanted to go to the tavern since they had outdoor seating, however they told me that dogs are not allowed, not even on the patio. So you're telling me that you market yourself as dog loving, however deny man's best friend from basking in the spotlight that you have misappropriated? We walked around the corner to their bakery, ordered a clam chowder, an amity and a vegetarian sandwich. There was only 1 person ahead of me. When I ordered, it literally took them 30 minutes to make my order, which they forgot to make my sandwich. The salted chocolate chip cookies are good. The sandwiches? So boring. I regretted my choices. The chowder? It tasted like Campbell's canned soup.

Shelby V.

Yelp
This review is for the clam chowder and the ambiance. I went in quickly to get some clam chowder before leaving on the ferry. The black dog has multiple buildings in their complex- the bakery, the store, the yacht club, and the tavern (maybe more?). While the bakery closed at 5, I wanted a true Martha's vineyard seafood experience. I was in and out but the server was very conscious of my time restrictions with the ferry. The building is very cool- definitely has some history to it. It felt like you were in the hull of a boat and the pictures on the walls reflected that. There was outdoor seating for warm weather and it's RIGHT on the water so taking a drink outside brings you to the beach. The chowder. So filling so delicious not too salty but a LOT of clams it satisfied my need for the sea! Got the croutons on the side the keep the crunch since it was to-go. I can't wait to come back in the summer!

Lucas W.

Yelp
I'll admit the legendary status and shops across the island are a bit much. But for what the tavern is trying to do, it's great. It was exactly what I ate at growing up visiting Boston along the oceanfront - the wooden floors, ceilings, and the wooden curved chairs. You know the ones. It felt like Mass. We were told the wait would be 20 minutes, it was more like 40. However, when we told the hostess we were in a bit of a time crunch following the delay, she really did have the kitchen move along our food quickly and carried it over herself while the waitress was busy. Timing was fine! I can't have shellfish so I can't eat any of their best products. But my wife said the crabcake sandwich was amazing and surprisingly filling. She said she'd definitely be willing to get it again but was almost glad to have missed out on the chowder given how filling it all was. I had a chicken pesto sandwich which was fine. More than fine really, the chicken was a nice thick piece that was rather juicy and the fries were good too. Look, is it the greatest cuisine ever? No, but it's a perfect rendition of an oceanfront eatery.

Yelp
I first went to The Black Dog Tavern in 2016 after flying to Martha's Vineyard as a rookie pilot. I didn't think I'd find myself back at the Vineyard 6 years later as a professional pilot so it was a lot of nostalgia for me to begin with. After combing through the various dining options I settled on The Black Dog Tavern as it was a short walk from the cozy Inn I was staying at. When I walked in I realized this was the very same place I had been to in January 2016 so more nostalgia! Fortunately this time it wasn't bloody cold! Service was good and the young lady was very pleasant. The clam chowder was excellent and hit the spot and the lobster roll albeit a little pricy was also phenomenal. Needless to say I'll definitely be returning.

George P.

Yelp
The stuffed squash and rice dish is very tasty! The PE mussels in white wine sauce with lemon and bread hit the spot...,juicy fat mussels tasted so good. Chicken wings were crispy good and the beet/squash salad rounded off a MV good feast!

Martin P.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Situated on the water and with a very friendly staff

Erica M.

Yelp
Funny that a company that built its brand on promoting a dog, ban dogs from entering its restaurant and clothing store. Even its "outdoor" tavern area bans dogs. So guess what, we could not enter with our little dog. Oh forgot, there is one outdoor dilapidated picnic table in a God forgotten neglected and miserable area. The black dog would be insulted by this treatment of his fellow canines! I would dare to say that he would ask to have his image removed from all Black Dog items and advertisements for this anti-dog treatment. However, there is a silver lining to this story. We did not remain hungry and sad. We ate at a place with great service and wonderful food --The Golden Bull Brazilian Steakhouse. There our little dog was welcomed. He was even given a plastic cup with water. Again the meal was wonderful and reasonably priced. We dined in there outside patio area with our little well behaved dog.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Food was excellent. We had the fried oysters. Really good cocktail selection. Great service. Enjoyed it.

Amy T.

Yelp
We had very good meals and our bartender was great the day that we had beers at the cabana.

Dil S.

Yelp
Fine pub! Food and drinks are alright - turkey reuben was nice. View is better than average. Good spot to kill some time on the vineyard.

Will V.

Yelp
Cozy restaurant and the food is awesome. One of my favorite restaurants on island- highly recommend!

John W.

Yelp
This is a decent place. I can't see the whole cult following but it's definitely a nice place to come to. The staff were a bit rude but to be fair, they could have been stressed. The indoor seating was nice but we chose the outdoor seating which was also really well done. The waitresses were fine. They did their job pleasantly but I'm not expecting to be life long friends either. The food was decent and the prices were as expected. They have a great location on the dock. Be sure to come early!

Jim C.

Yelp
We have visited Martha's Vineyard for over 25 years. We always went to the Black Dog Tavern going back to the days when it was BYOB. Food was always excellent and service was good even though it was always crowded and expensive. We had not been to the Black Dog in over 5 years and decided to go to lunch as we had to wait to get into our rental. What a mistake! We waited in line for almost 30 minutes to get in and had to wait another 30 minutes to put in our order for 4 meals which was 2 hot lobster rolls, a cod sandwich and a garden salad with crab cakes. It then took another hour for our food to arrive right before we were going to ask for our bill and leave. And, when the food arrived, there was no salad with crab cakes. Our waitress said she didn't know what happened, but it looked to us that she then entered the order for the salad. Fifteen minutes later as the other 3 diners were finishing, the salad with crab cakes showed up. The waitress apologized and said she would take the salad off our bill. As for the food, the lobster rolls were dry and rubbery (and tiny), the cod sandwich was flavorless, and the crab cakes looked like hockey pucks and were overcooked without much crab meat and were almost inedible. In other words, the food was not good (at a premium price!) and certainly not worth the money or the wait. When the bill arrived, the waitress charged us for the salad! At this point, we were so fed up and just wanted to get out of there and enjoy the sunny day, we paid the bill and we paid for the salad with crab cakes. What a shame, what was once one of the best restaurants on the island had become a tourist trap that doesn't care about food quality or service. We won't be returning.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and was blown away-- the clam chowder was creamy and delicious, so much so that one of my dining companions ordered a second. The Summer Salad was delicious; the lobster rolls were AMAZING. We subbed the fries for sweet potato fries which to our delight were also waffle fries, and they were very good. The Pick Me Up (espresso martini) sans espresso was very good; my partner's Dirty Dog (dirty martini) was not good- if we had to do it over we would order with Grey Goose instead of what it comes with, which seemed like a cheaper vodka. Definitely come here for the chowder and lobster roll!

Yelp
Loved having lunch on the back porch here! Clam chowder was our favorite on the island! Ginger miso wings were yum too!

Yelp
Super generous amount and tasty Clam Chowder in a tiny old tavern next to the harbor. The service was amazing too! They sat us next to the window for a full view of the beautiful marina and harbor. I love the Black Dog branding and the authentic New England/Martha's Vineyard experience.

Yelp
Black Dog is 'famous' on MVI. The food is OK. Nothing special from my point of view. I think it's more of the name that gets folks in here. We were with friends from AZ and they seemed happy with their chowder and that's what counts right? That's perhaps the restaurants target audience. Our waitress was exceptional! We arrived on a weekend brunch and wanted lunch, not brunch. We asked for lunch menus and were allowed to 'review' them until lunch was served. About 15 minutes or so. The waitress actually took the order sooner but still, it was nice that they allowed us to be seated and wait. She was very good at her job and her customer service skills. One end of the restaurant is a window wall overlooking the ocean. If you score one of those tables it's a lovely view. The restaurant is bright and sunny on a sunny day throughout. It's all tables here from what I saw, no booths. No baby changing station in the one restroom.

Yelp
The food is consistently delicious, I come here often. Sometimes the staff is rude but today was unacceptable. The older woman at the register was so awful for NO REASON. Rolling her eyes, looking at me in a disgusted way, and clearly whispering behind my back to the other staff. The cook seems to be annoyed every time I'm there so thats nothing new. Seemed to be race related because I gave her absolutely no reason to treat me the way she did. No one was wearing name tags (shocking) so I did not get her name. I will be contacting corporate ASAP.
