"Westborough’s Black Rose European Bakery has expanded to Boston with a shiny new cafe on Newbury Street. The pastry cases are loaded with cakes, cupcakes, cannolis, and more, plus the team expanded the menu at Back Bay to include items like meat pies, bubble tea, smoothies, and sandwiches." - Erika Adams

Solid spot for cakes and coffee on Newbury. Stopped by for a quick sugar fix this past weekend. The vibes were reminiscent of the Central Perk Coffeehouse next door—just on a smaller scale. The menu leaned heavily on cakes, cookies, and sweet pastries, and cheesecakes seemed to be their specialty. Naturally, I got a couple of their cheesecakes along with a slice of tiramisu. The tiramisu was just average, but all the cheesecakes I tried were nice. While they weren’t as creamy as Tatte’s, they were definitely a step above the standard offerings from most dessert spots around Boston. I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to return for their cakes, but if you’re in the neighborhood and casually craving something sweet, Black Rose is worth considering.

The Black Rose Bakery is a newer European cafe located near the heart of Newbury Street. We came around the time when it opened, and it was alright. The service definitely was a bit swamped, but it didn't damper the experience that much. We got a few of the desserts. such as cookies and a few pastries. The cookie was quite large, pretty good portion for the price. It wasn't too sweet and didn't feel that heavy, which was an added bonus. Overall, a decent location to visit and try.

We didn’t try the cakes but they looked delicious and there was a good variety. The deco nice and a comfy bright place to have a warm drink on a chilly afternoon. Service was so-so but overall would come again for sure when I have appetite for a cake or pastry

It’s insanely good! I came from Toronto, I wish we had this bakery there! The Lobster Tail has ricotta cheese inside it’s sooo good, and the croissant ham and cheese is delicious! Must try!

I can't say enough great things about Joey at The Black Rose European Bakery! From the moment we first walked in, Joey went above and beyond to ensure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. Every visit felt like a personal interaction rather than just a transaction. His knowledge about the menu and his genuine willingness to accommodate our dietary restrictions were impressive and greatly appreciated. Joey’s patience and enthusiasm made it clear that he truly cares about his customers' satisfaction. Whether it was finding the perfect gluten-free option or making sure our vegan needs were met, he always had a solution and a smile. It’s rare to encounter someone so dedicated and accommodating, and Joey’s exceptional service truly made our visits to the bakery memorable and enjoyable. If you’re looking for top-notch service and a bakery experience that goes beyond the ordinary, Joey at The Black Rose European Bakery is the person to seek out. His commitment to excellence and customer care sets the bar incredibly high. We can’t wait for our next visit, knowing we’ll be met with the same outstanding service!

It is a new store around the area, but they have delicious foods there. There are many kinds of cakes and cookies for kids to adults. They are also selling smoothies there and avocado is our favorite. There is a must try place when you come to visit Boston. Parking is on the street, but in the summertime, they always block the street and only allow for pedestrians

I wanted to like this bakery more, but was overall an okay experience. For an European bakery, there was a surprisingly small amount of European pastry varieties. Instead, the focus seems to be on cupcakes and cookies. I ended up trying the crème brûlée, which was a bit underbaked and the sugar crust was extremely soft sadly. Flavor was really nice though, but wouldn’t get it again. The coffee was good, and service was great, very fast. The cafe itself is very cute and a good place to sit and sip a warm drink and pastry. Another small thing is I wish there was real dish ware for in-house drinks and food instead of paper plates and plastic cutlery, especially given the price point. Not sure if I would recommend quite yet, but I would maybe come back and give some other pastries an attempt.

This shop has a HUGE selection of desserts. I really liked the chocolate cherry cake that I had because it is of a decent size given the price, is not too sweet, and has a nice balance of different flavors. There are plenty seating choices both indoor and outside. I’d definitely visit this place again.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I popped by this bakery the day after Valentine's Day as we were walking on Newbury Street. He's a sucker for a sweet treat and neither of us had been before. The interior is beautiful with a huge display case and seating to the sides, looked very clean. We ordered a mini raspberry cheesecake and three cupcakes: a salted caramel, a red velvet, and some sort of berry cupcake, I can't remember the exact name. My favorite was the red velvet - it was moist, the cream cheese frosting was the perfect level of sweetness, and it had a good cake to frosting ratio. I'd give it a 4.5/5. Next was the salted caramel, it had a chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting and a dollop of soft caramel in the center. It was really rich and the frosting/caramel was a bit overwhelming. Also a little dry, 3/5. The mini raspberry cheesecake was pretty good, could've been a little creamier and had more raspberry jam but it was yummy. 3.7/5. Finally was the berry cupcake. I wanted to like it so bad but it was pretty gross. The cake was dry, there was too much frosting and it tasted like Play-Doh, such a weird off-putting flavor. 1.5/5. What really deters me from returning is how overpriced everything was - my order came to $17 before tip. Overall I'd try them again if I was in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Yelp
This is a nice cozy place with plenty of pastry options, however not enough seatings. We ordere: three different pastries to try and the croissant with strawberry filling ended up being our FAVORITE . We really enjoyed how airy the frosting was and tasted in all the pasteries. * Key point was that the frosting was not as sweet*. Pistacho Mousse Cake- LEAST FAVORITE. Nothing about it tasted like Pistachio... Chocolate Cherry Layered Cake - good cake, I was expecting more of a chocolately flavor and it was more cream based. Lastly, our favorite strawberry croissant was magical!!!!!!

We tried a selection of their desserts, including cookies and pastries. The cookie stood out--it was generously sized for the price, not overly sweet, and had a light, satisfying texture that didn't feel heavy. The pastries were similarly enjoyable, though nothing particularly stood out as extraordinary. Overall, The Black Rose Bakery is a solid spot to stop by for a sweet treat and to explore a newer addition to the area. Worth a visit if you're strolling down Newbury Street!

Yelp
Stopped in on my way back to my hotel to grab a quick dessert. They had a ton of different options which was great. I ultimately decided on the Oreo cheesecake. It was a little pricy for the size but it is Boston so that's to be expected. The cheesecake itself was just fine, it kind of had an odd maybe lemony taste to it but it was still tasty. Just not what I expected.

Yelp
I'm *truly* shocked writing this review. Somehow this was one of the worst things I've ever put in my mouth. I don't know what happened- if this is how it's supposed to be- if something happened- idk but it did not taste edible. I went in because I was nearby and knew they were opening a new location. I was super excited and the workers were so nice helping me pick out what to get. I got two cupcakes (Oreo and red velvet), a s'mores brownie, a coconut cake ball, an Oreo cheesecake, and a strawberry petit four. It all came out to $22.98. The only way I can describe the taste was plastic. It tasted like melted plastic was in everything?? The frosting on the cupcakes, the actual cupcakes, the brownie, all of it. My gf thought so too so I am not crazy! Lol. However, I do think something must have been wrong. I don't think anybody would purposely sell something that awful. I don't know what happened but I hope other people have a better experience!

Yelp
Black Rose European Bakery is the second outpost (Westborough was the first) of an eclectic set of pastries and desserts that astound the senses. The new spot is in the heart of Back Bay - right at the corner of Newbury and Hereford. The venue provides for a spacious and comfortable indoor area as well as a remarkably charming "European" outdoor section. In terms of the offerings, you will find here: tarts, cannolis, mini cheesecakes, standard cheesecakes, mini cakes, cake slices, truffle cake pops, cupcakes, eclairs, panna cotta, brownies, butter cookies, massively decadent cookies, macarons, macaroons, biscotti, embellished croissants, petit fours, and palmiers. Exhausted yet? Moreover, don't forget about the savory items: You'll see a dynamic menu on the wall behind the cashier - with sandwiches of various flavors. I especially enjoyed the mushroom croissant option. Staff is super friendly - willing to answer all your questions about the panoply of delicacies!

Yelp
Number 1 sign that a place is low quality is when they have a menu that is more pages than a low-grade fiction novel. Black Rose has literally every pastry known to man and they accomplish that feat by making them poorly. Oh, and number two is having your espresso drinks come out of touch screen. Another Newbury street winner. Can't wait to see what bougie generic thing takes its place.

Yelp
Located on Newbury Street we decided to try it since it was new. They have a lot of desserts and pastries to choose from. We ordered the mango smoothie which took a while to make and was a little too sweet to our liking. Decor is cute and instagrammable.

Margaret P.

Yelp
Pros: It's not too loud here, plenty of places to sit, a wide selection of baked goods, relaxing environment, beautiful decor, kind staff, the coffee and food are pretty cheap, the food looks so beautiful as well To note: You must purchase at least two pastries, if you purchase the mini pastries. Overall score: A+

Yelp
I was so excited to see "european bakery" and visited at late night at first. I was more interested in basic bakeries but could see more sweets. Fortunately, we were able to get some samples of bakeries, which did not meet my expectations. The breads were so dry and hard without any savory tastes. When I chewed it in my mouth it was more like spreading crumbs, than foods are melting. The second visit we had so called sfogliatelle, and it was around lunch time. There were more breads than sweets but still nothing caught my eyes. Staffs are nice and friendly but I believe bakeries could be so much better. Maybe that could be the reason it wasn't that crowded during weekend even when the location is great.

Yoana G.

Yelp
The pastries that I sampled were good but nothing special. While there are a variety of items available, none of the sweets my friends and I purchased wowed me enough to return (many are not pictured). Somewhat disappointing because of how well-liked this place seemed on social media. The employees, however, were so kind (angels even) for letting us order past close (as well as several other customers). Excellent customer service!! Additionally, there is a pretty layout and the place is practically sparkling. Sadly this is not enough to entice me to come again.

Yelp
I wish I can give a 0 star. I placed an order via the phone number listed here. They were supposed to call back the next day to confirm the order. Never got the call. I ended up calling back and confirmed my order with words (for someone's birthday). When I came to the store to pick up. My cake was not there. They called the manager. The manager said that he would call the other store to check. The manager also never called back. I ended up calling the other store which had my cake with a phone number associated with this store. When I was there, they were onboarding someone new. So clearly people working there had little knowledge of what's going on. Take your business elsewhere. The sister and brother who own these two stores clearly had no interest in keeping their business running. Update: the manager called and comped me for the price of a birthday cake. Mistakes happen. Thanks for resolving it promptly.

Yelp
I like to form my own opinions on bakeries, but the low reviews certainly made me question going in, but my friend and I went in together and were pleasantly surprised. We took one strawberry croissant to share and each had a drink (he had a peach mango boba and i had a piña colada smoothie). Prices were a little steep but it's a newbury st bakery, so I wasn't expecting a great deal. The drinks were fine--the smoothie could have had a more intense flavor and less ice chunks, but it was still very good. The mango boba was fresh and had fruit in it that helped the overall taste. The croissant was delicious! The strawberries were delicious and the croissant itself was great. The strawberry cream was a little bland but nothing that would prevent me from ordering again. Workers were incredibly kind and the ambiance was pretty easygoing around 6pm on a sunday. Ate outside and it was lovely. I would return and try more pastries to form a more solid opinion--overall, I think some of these negative reviews are just building on each other for the sake of it. Really was quite nice!

Yelp
- no prices listed anywhere - use of shitty paper plates from Costcos or something - terrible service (the woman literally watched someone cut in front of me and served them first...and I was like what the heck...you asked me to wait here so you can do something) - pastries / baked goods looked pretty, but tasted horrible...like I literally do better as I happen to be a professional baker too - no allergens listed or fully known (my friend is extremely allergic to nuts and they didn't know if something had nuts in it so they had to ask the baker who made it) I got their Red Velvet Cake Slice and a Chocolate Chip Cookie. The Chocolate Chip Cookie was flavorless, like I don't even know how that's possible (I kind of do, but to sell this cookie for like $7 is ridiculous). The Cake tasted like it was from a super market or something. It was sad. This place isn't worth your time or money. Go elsewhere. Levain or Chip City that are nearby is better for cookies anyways.

Yelp
One of the cutest and most aesthetically pleasing cafes that you can find on Newbury Street! The interior is so beautiful and it was decorated so nicely for the holidays when I visited a few weeks ago! They also have some tables outside on their patio which could be really nice for peoplewatching once the weather gets nicer. As someone who has to eat gluten-free, I've only tried their roll cakes - there's a variety of flavors (lemon, strawberry, vanilla, and blueberry) and I've really enjoyed them. The cake texture itself is super airy, the cream they use is light and not too sweet, and I think my favorite would be the lemon, because it has a super tart refreshing flavor. Each slice is quite thick (it always takes me a few sittings to finish it all) and priced around ~$8. The biggest bone I have to pick about this cafe is that none of the prices are shown until you end up actually ordering what you want. It can also be a bit difficult just to flag down a worker and ask for a price, especially when there are long lines, because everyone is busy helping a customer out.

Becky F.

Yelp
I was super excited after reading rave reviews from Eater, but man was I disappointed. There don't show prices, so getting a $15 bill for two small pastries was surprising. The vanilla crumb cake, which the person behind the counter told me it was a "vanilla cream cake", was dry and sandy, with the top part feeling stale and was hard to eat. I took home a pecan tart to have after work, and I wish I hadn't. It tasted like burnt tree bark, and not in a maple-syrup way. I ended up throwing in the trash. Not worth the money, go a few blocks to Flour or Jonquils for something good.

Tracey P.

Yelp
We tried 3 different cake slices (red velvet, chocolate mousse, and limoncello) They were all moist and delicious. The bakery was warm and inviting and everyone was friendly

Jacqueline P.

Yelp
I was excited to try this bakery because they have soo many treats and they all look so beautiful, but there is definitely something off with the cake slices. The chocolate raspberry slice tasted musty and old and the frosting had a very bad taste, practically inedible. I did have a chocolate m&m cookie that was pretty good so I wasn't all disappointed, but definitely expected better from this new addition to newbury street! At least the staff was super friendly and efficient.

Andrea A.

Yelp
This bakery looked so pretty as I was walking by, but wow, it's just awful. I got a piece of chocolate cake to go. That's it. I got home, I couldn't wait to try it. First of all, it was peanut butter chocolate cake which is not what I ordered. I was so disappointed. But on top of that, the cake was old and tasted like it had been re-refrigerated many times -- this poor slice of cake must have been sitting on the shelf for who knows how many days. It was stale and inedible. Newbury Street deserves a better bakery. I understand why there are so many poor reviews of this place.

Cindy H.

Yelp
I went here with my husband, it was one of the few places that were still open late at night in newbury. Nice ambiance and its bright, staff were nice and patient. Im very picky with food so take my review lightly. I got three mini pastries (2 mini cupcakes and a mini strawberry cheesecake) and a chocolate pecan tart. My husband liked the cheesecake mini and the cupcakes were okay. The icing was a thick tart cream cheese icing. I didn't like either one because they were stale to me and the icing tasted like straight cream cheese. The tart was dry and thick, you can see the pecans but barely taste any pecan filling. There are no price tags anywhere for any item. You would have to ask the staff for the prices but they mainly range around 3-8 dollars. The 3 mini pastries were 9.84 and the tart was 7.28 Presentation looks great and beautiful but the taste didn't match personally for me.

Zach S.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Huge variety of baked goods. The cupcakes and peanut butter cake tasted fresh and fluffy. And the person working behind the counter was so kind - very patient and offered recommendations. Lovely outdoor seating too. Can't wait to go back!

Myka R.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly but the prices were a bit extreme. We got a lobster tail croissant, cannoli and mini tart. Each item tasted freezer burnt and stale. Everything looked so perfect but tasted like it had been sitting in a smelly fridge. It was quite the bummer. Lots of potential but there is no way they actually bake anything there.

Nikki P.

Yelp
The cupcakes are delicious!! we tried the red velvet and carrot cake, and can't wait to try others.

Lola B.

Yelp
While it all looked delicious - everything we purchased was soggy and had no flavor. We ended up tossing them after a few bites. Yikes

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Paid almost $5 for a below average cupcake. The frosting was hard and the cupcake itself was small and didn't taste good. I've had better from almost any grocery store.

Lyndsey G.

Yelp
Great BYO sandwich. The chef personally brought it out to me and threw in a little cake for me. It was a very intentional experience. Prices are up there but I enjoyed it.

Shawn J.

Yelp
so expensive, and the lemon square cake is small, and extremely dry. I wonder if it's old.

Amy S.

Yelp
The cupcakes were dry and tasted so stale. The mini cheesecakes were okay, the raspberry topping was great but the strawberry one tasted fake/artificial.

Sarah B.

Yelp
For a European bakery and cafe, I would at least expect an expresso machine. Pastries tasted stale and old and store bought. Coffee was watery. All pastries were served on flimsy paper plates bought from a dollar store or something. Our first red flag should have been that they serve bubble tea.

Melissa D.

Yelp
I'm sorry but the pastries that I have tried from this place on 2 separate occasions were not good at all. Cookies were bland, dry and old tasting. Cannoli was definitely not "European" style. Not fresh at all. A more positive note is that the staff are happy to help and super nice. This place will only have business because of tourists who don't know any better.
