Detroit’s most foolproof, zero-proof cocktails | Eater Detroit

"The Black Salt is a self-described “witchcraft cocktail bar” in Hamtramck. Owner Zoey Ashwood has transformed the space into a serene, lush lounge evocative of European cafes where guests can order drinks that put the “craft” in cocktail as bartenders are trained to cast the optional spell on orders. Customers are invited to place their coaster logo-side up, indicating to the barkeep to make their drink “with ritual.” In the past, all cocktails at Black Salt could be made with an NA spirit, however, the Hamtramck spot is now developing a mocktail menu, in addition to its current booze-free options — which can be served with a spell." - Serena Maria Daniels

Best Bars and Restaurants to Celebrate Halloween in Metro Detroit - Eater Detroit

"The Black Salt in Hamtramck is the city’s only 'witchcraft cocktail bar.' Fittingly, then, it’s pulling out all the stops for the whole month of October. On October 28, the Hunter Full Moon in Taurus party features live music. And on Halloween night, the Celtic festival of Samhain honors the thinning of the veil between death and life, with special reservation-only rituals." - Mickey Lyons

Two bars are opening soon in Hamtramck - Eater Detroit

"Opening March 3, The Black Salt is a self-described “witchcraft cocktail bar” on Florian Street just west of Joseph Campau. The building dates back more than a century, according to the Detroit News, and among its many incarnations the space was formerly a goth and industrial hangout known as Mephisto’s. Owner Zoey Ashwood has transformed the space into a serene, lush lounge evocative of European cafes. Ashwood told the News that the bar’s name is a reference to the practice of spreading black salt around to keep evil spirits away. The bar will serve craft cocktails with a spiritual twist. Each cocktail on the menu comes with an optional spell performed by the bartender. The Black Salt’s opening party on Friday, March 3, begins at 4 p.m. According to the bar’s Facebook page, those who arrive between 4 and 6 p.m. will be entered in a raffle for a “prosperity and protection” gift bag, with crystals, spell kits, and other items from Downtown Tarot. The bar has not yet announced its hours of operation." - Mickey Lyons

The cocktails and spells at the Black Salt are so worth the trip. Intricate ingredients in the cocktails make for a first-of-its-kind experience (they serve traditional cocktails as well). Our bartender was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable--and weren't bothered by the questions my cousin and I asked about gluten-free needs. The atmosphere is dark and cozy. They played a great mix of music including old stuff by the B-52's that I just loved. It felt so good being there, talking and catching up with my cousin.

Classic pub style bar. Vast liquor and beer collection. Very knowledgeable & friendly bartender. I had a Very nice 16 yo Scotch, with a classic scotch rock. Outdoor seating in back. A great witchy/warlock vibe, and the family had fun casting fun spells provided by the bar.

Google
The Black Salt is an amazing place. The moment you walk in the vibe is present. A welcoming spot where you can relax with a unique drink (and snack-ask for the sticks and stones) and chat for hours. I found this spot a year ago and go weekly indeed. 🤍 Make sure to ask for a spell. The magic is real. ✨

Google
We visited The Black Salt on a Saturday evening and had a really fun time! They have reasonably priced craft cocktails and offer them with fun spells to do while having your drink. Mine involved a note and bottle related to love and my girlfriend's involved a candle for stress. They also have tarot card vending machines and had a Remote Viewing Party DJ set live.

I went with a group of friends and we all loved the experience. Sarah was our bartender and was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the drinks, made really great suggestions and happily answered all of our questions. The drinks she made were very, VERY good. Went for one and ended up having two! I love the atmosphere as well. I’m the type of person who doesn’t want a loud atmosphere often, but I still like to go out and relax with a very well made drink and the Black Salt is the perfect place to do so.

Google
First time in. Arrived right when they opened. Our amazing bartender Joshua made some of the best drinks we've had in a very long time at any bar. We appreciate the High Tea Bon Bon Bon food offerings and cocktails and spells are out of this realm. I highly recommend Black Salt. Will return as soon as possible.

Drinks are pricey, but it's worth the experience. The ambiance and atmosphere is very cool and intimate. The bartender was very knowledgeable, attentive & efficient. You could tell they cared about & enjoyed their work. Will definitely visit again. Edit: photos added of the fun tarot gachapon.

Google
Fun place to visit. Make sure you make reservations very limited seating. Non spell drinks are more reasonable. Drinks w spells a tad higher but very unique. It was fun to visit. Great idea! Very limited food selection, so eat before you come. Mainly for cocktails.

Yelp
I came here on a whim last Halloween and had a great experience with a friend! We sat at the bar and ordered experience cocktails that came with a spell and cute crystal. The ambiance was very moody and dimly lit, great for smaller parties. You can order a deck of tarot cards or listen to a live dj on some nights. I recently came here again this Halloween and the cocktails and service were just as good. Overall a great little bar! I have had the dreamweaver, permission granted, witching hour, Scorpio astrology and fill the well cocktails - all are great choices.

Yelp
I just had my first and second visits to The Black Salt on consecutive weekends -- that's how much I liked it the first time! I wasn't sure what to expect re: the witchy vibe (my wife was very into it going in!), but it was honestly great. You can really lean into it and do the spells, or you can just treat it like a regular cocktail bar -- either is very enjoyable. The drinks are really good -- I've tried a bunch but my favorites so far have been the Witching Hour and the Pistachio Coffee Martini. Can't really go wrong here, though, and the pricing is actually good compared to similar level craft cocktail bars. If there's something to nitpick, it's how long it can sometimes take to get drinks. There are no servers coming to the table, so everything is ordered at the bar. Since these are craft cocktails, they take a while to make and that can sometimes crate a traffic jam by the bar. Overall though, that's a small price to pay for a seriously cool witchy cocktail experience!

Yelp
Tonight was my first experience at Black Salt, and they were honoring Hekate. It was such a beautiful and meaningful evening, and the drinks were beyond superb. The vibe was beautiful, the people I met were incredible, and I can't wait to come back. I am definitely naming The Black Salt my new joint. Thank you for so many reasons you don't even know, for existing and being a safe place for us to be ourselves in public. . Much Love and Always Good Vibes, Amanda

Yelp
The Black Salt is a must-visit in Detroit. It's a unique and interactive experience for anyone looking to have a good time!

Yelp
Cozy, relaxed (even though busy) friendly... the spells all felt genuine, handwritten, meaningful, not kitschy. I didn't choose by spell I chose by alcohol, but the spell I ended up with felt most appropriate for me. ...then later, the seemingly most 'general' one was Thee MOST delicious drink ever!! We ordered 3. When asked what the nutmeg mix was the bartender laughed, saying, "Ohh no, we make it here!" Definitely recommend. Keep them in business. But don't make it too busy for me to get in!

Yelp
Stumbled upon The Black Salt last night, and wow--what a vibe. The place is like stepping into the coolest, witchiest den you never knew you needed. Everything is black, dramatic, and perfectly curated, giving off that mysterious yet totally inviting energy. Our bartender gave us a great intro to the menu and our options for getting witchy-or not-depending on what we were feeling. I went for the Knot So Tight, a bourbon cocktail with a twist--it doubles as a spell to banish someone from your life. Now, I'm not exactly into magic or witchcraft, but I have to say, there was something pretty fun and oddly calming about performing a mini spell right at the bar. Whether it actually works or not, the drink was delicious, and the whole experience was one for the books. So maybe the magic is working in at least one way--because I already want to go back.

Yelp
I went to The Black Salt with some friends for my birthday weekend. I'm a Aquarius so naturally I had to order the Aquarius drink which was pretty good but the drink that I will be back for is the Corpse Reviver #2. They have a variety of options and all of the bartenders were friendly. The menu also had some light food to snack on but don't expect a full meal. The ambiance held up to the theme and I loved all the rock salt lights around the bar. I will definitely be back to try more

Yelp
The Black Salt was super cool. It's a nice neighborhood bar to stop in before or after dinner. The atmosphere is dark and laid-back. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The website states, "seating is first come," but I had to sit at the bar. I couldn't sit in the more private area because I was told it was reserved. I went in already knowing that I wanted a spell along with my drink. Yeah, it's that kind of spot, a mystical unique witchcraft bar. They offer rituals and spells with select drinks. There are also non-ritual drinks and also non-alcoholic ones. I visited to start my birthday weekend celebration setting intentions for a wonderful personal new year. I couldn't decide if any of the spell drinks aligned with my intentions at first, so I went with a general ritual "Transmission" for love. Doesn't every good thing begin with love? It was tasty, made with bourbon, ginger, grapefruit, and honey. I also ordered a spinach pastry so as not to drink alcohol on an empty stomach. There are a few other items available for noshing. I didn't stay long, I had another engagement. But the bar filled up pretty quickly after opening. It seems like a popular place. I parked on the street at a meter, but strangely enough, the next block didn't seem to have meters. Also, the hostess informed me that the lot across the street is free to park in. Before I left, I walked through to check out the esthetic. I was into it. There's a patio out back, a cool upper level, and an even more cozy space in the back of the house, before one walks out to the patio. I don't know if the space is available for private rental, but it would make for a dope party with different mystical stations, if you will. Do check them out. I would imagine that The Black Salt is going to grow by leaps and bounds.

Yelp
My friend owed me a drink and has been wanting to take me to The Black Salt, especially since it totally fits my vibes (goth, witchy), so when I came into town, of course we had to pay The Black Salt a visit! Evelynn (hope I'm spelling it right) the bartender is awesome! They were very kind to explain to us how to follow the instructions of casting spells on our cocktails. We drank the Love Ritual and the Prosperity Ritual. They were both lovely to imbibe. Definitely loved this lovely little bar.

Yelp
I love this place. Cozy and witchy, really well made drinks. It's nice to go somewhere that you feel like you fit in. :) I rarely end up doing the rituals but they're a cool option. It's reliably pretty busy so if you have a group, go earlier in the evening/afternoon.

Yelp
I came to this bar on a Friday night and found it was more of an upscale sit-down bar with a younger crowd, there was low lighting and jazz music playing on the speakers. The cocktails were delicious! Me and my friend tried the Fortuity drink (tequila based, fruity) and the Aquarius (lavender vodka, fruity). I decided to buy the "ritual" with my drink, it costs a couple dollars extra and you are given spell instructions, a paper, colored pencil, a stand, and a candle to perform a spell. This is a really nifty and unique idea, I've never had an experience like this at a bar before. OVERALL I think this is a fun, more relaxed bar to go to if you are willing to spend around $10 per drink. I especially recommend this for a more hipster/witchy vibe!

Yelp
Had a very relaxing and magical evening at The Black Salt. From the minute you walk in, it feels like a cozy relaxing place. The owner thought of every detail. We ordered two drinks that came with spells, you received instructions, rice paper and edible pen ink. The cocktails were also very delicious. Surprisingly it was mostly females but I would recommend it at a cute date night spot. The lighting is very romantic and the drinks are sexy!

Yelp
The place was great and the service was wonderful! Met there for a friend's 40th Birthday and a few of us chose a "Ritual" to go with our drinks of choice. My drink was the "Enchantment" and it came with a Love Spell. Be careful to identify the entire contents of the sachet and understand the instructions on the Black Card that describes the Ritual. Then, take a sip of your drink, concentrate on your spell, and complete your "ritual"... then enjoy the mood, the interior decor and the relaxed vibe. If you're in a larger group like we were, it may take some time for the bartender to pour all the drinks, which can be complex with ingredients, and set up each Ritual for those that pay a bit extra for the experience. They'll bring the drinks to you and give a small explanation of how things work. If you're unsure of how to exercise your ritual, they should give you some ideas, and the rest is left up to chance, and your imagination Would definitely go back to try a few of the other drinks and do another, new ritual for the fun of it. You get to keep the items you use, as a keep sake, but please don't take photos of the spells, as they belong to the spirit of the experience [and the owners of the IP], but feel free to take photos of all else and enjoy!

Yelp
Chill atmosphere, good drinks, and witchy options! Think Standby meets spells! Cocktails were good, spells were fun, and I'd definitely be back!

Yelp
Finally made it here!! I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of this new cool spot in Hamtramck. I can now see why it was impossible to get into on opening day. It's tiny inside! This is a great spot to come and chat with friends. They have a unique vibe to them that is wicked cool! It's a witchy atmosphere with crystals and everything. You can order a drink from the menu or something else if you'd like. I chose the Transmission He got a Pisces. Mine was quite strong but very good his drink was a lot milder. When you order a drink from the menu, you can get it with or without the ritual or with or without alcohol. If you'd like the ritual, you place your coaster with the pentagram side up. If you don't want one, you place it logo side up. I chose the love ritual, because I can always use all the help I can get. Lol. My niece is turning 21 and this looks like the absolute perfect spot for her party. They have a private room upstairs that fits 8-14 people. It can be reserved ahead of time. This is a 21 and over only spot. So, I'm not sure if we can have it here because some of the party goers works still be under 21. But we could always have one here and one somewhere else. It seems like the perfect spot to me. If you haven't been here yet, check it out! We moved on and ended up just going to a bunch of dive bars. Perfect night!

Yelp
Love the vibe. So intimate & loungey. Perfect for a date or girls nite. I had one of the spell cocktails, and I swear it's working. The service was great! The DJ was an added bonus!

Yelp
The Black Salt is a cute little establishment located off Holbrook & Jos Campau in Hamtramck. It is an old house on a one way street, so quaint. There are little seating areas located throughout, and a nice outside area for beautiful days/nights. The decor is metaphysical & earthly. I love it! You must order your magical cocktails from the bar. The service is as quick as it can be. Concocting craft cocktails is an art form, be patient! The reward is a tasty drink (you may get in a N/A form) with an option to perform a spell while enjoying each sip. Pop in at The Black Salt! You will enjoy this eclectic experience.

Yelp
What a fun experience! Everyone kept saying there was a "witch bar" in Hamtramck. I was so excited to try to out. They have a unique menu with some drinks that come be accompanied by a ritual. We chose the money ritual. (If it works I'll let you l know). You can still get any of the ritual drinks without the ritual. And they have lots of drinks without rituals and they also have mock-tails. The inside is cool. They have a long bar for seating and also a variety of tables/chairs/couches. It was very clean. The parking was easy and most import Amy the drinks were delicious. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Small bar in a neighborhood street just off the main strip. Limited street parking and nearby small lots. Inside is a quiet bar with some tables. Bar service. Sort of a classy spooky theme. The hook is that several of the cocktails can be made with magic spells. The prices are not bad, and they also have decently priced beer and wine. The staff were polite and friendly. The cocktails are way too sweet. Much too sweet.

Yelp
Great craft cocktails, great music and excellent service. Found this randomly and so happy we did.

Yelp
Great service. Nice vibe. We ordered the nuts and bolts - decent serving for a snack. Drinks were on point. Will be back with everyone I know

Yelp
This place is amazing. Staff is friendly as heck. Really loved the atmosphere and decor. Nicely stocked bar and some of the best BonBons ever!!!!

Yelp
Took a group of out-of-town friends to The Black Salt for cocktails. We sat at a table this time so we had a server taking care of us. She was hopping, so we did have to go up to the bar once. We ordered a Nuts and Bolts - yummy and just enough salt to soak up the alcohol. We had a blast renting a deck - The Great Lakes Oracle - and doing readings for each other. Most of us tried Spell cocktails and we enjoyed our afternoon very much. Fabulous place to take open-minded friends who don't mind a very chill, witchy atmosphere. Oh, they also added cool gumball machines in the front foyer that you can get a crystal/incense from for 50 cents. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I definitely have not been to every bar in the Detroit area, but this is by far the best one I've been to! Had three different drinks and all were 10/10s! Not to mention the service and ambience is a 12/10! This will be my go to cocktail bar from here on out!
google avatar

Becky J.

Yelp
One year later, I came back to Black Salt. They have made so many changes for the better! The ambiance is still so cozy, I noticed more art. The drinks were delicious and not too sweet this time around, and the SPELLS! Last year, when I got a drink with ritual, the bartender basically did it for me. This time around, they give you supplies to do your own spell! Candles, crystals, ribbon, herbs, you name it. It felt way more authentic and unique. Excited to return when the weather is warm because they have a back patio area too!

Yelp
This bar has been open for a few weeks now and Im in love with the vibe there and the drinks! We were greeted right away I think we got there right away so we got the fastest service! Abby was our waitress she was knowledgeable and friendly We meant to ask her more questions but it started to get a little busy. Im so so glad this space exists! This is such a different concept and im glad there can be an alt bar. Im excited to go back for more!

Yelp
The coolest witchy spot around! We've been waiting months for the Black Salt to open her doors. The vibe of Black Salt is a cozy, eclectic bar nestled in the heart of Hamtramck. This place was on slam for opening weekend. I absolutely loved it and the cocktails were fantastic. If you're in the mood to cast a spell, I suggest you bring your witchy friends with you! I enjoyed the prosperity concoction amd transmission spell; crossing my fingers it works!
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
This place has the best ambiance. They also have a wonderful selection on cocktails with or without a spell, mocktails and delightful teas. You can also get some cocktails for a reasonable price ($10).

Yelp
Needs food options...if they started serving quality dinners I'd be here for hours. But aside from that it's a cute spot with nice dark lighting. The furniture and some of the wall decor - the lit-up dead flower walls - is so gorgeous, and some is a little underwhelming like those giant canvas moon prints. The spell cocktails are cute and fun! A little understaffed...and should maybe go out of their way to purposely hire some Goth/alternative/punk/occultist etc types...I get the vibe they may think they're too good for what would otherwise be over half of their clientele. Not saying it should be made any less fancy, but maybe high class Goth needs to lean more Goth. less "cocktail jazz" and more "dark" but chill things both Goths and "normal" people can enjoy - Portishead, even Depeche Mode maybe, I don't know. Maybe a reading area accepting donations of real occult/Satanic/mystery/true crime type books - I think that an occult reading area with candles, fainting couches etc would really suit the subdued "we're Goth and a drinking establishment but please don't get rowdy here" vibe they're going for.
google avatar

Yelp
Black Salt is tucked away in a neighborhood in Hamtramck, but there was plenty of street parking right near by. We went pre-dinner on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy so we got right in and ordered. The bartender asked if we wanted a ritual with our drinks and we said yes, but when they came with the drinks nothing happened so I am not sure if something was supposed to happen or not. Drinks were decent, not too expensive, but none of them really wowed me. Without the spells, it's an everyday cocktail bar, and I am not sure it lives up to the likes of many Detroit others.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Vibes were awesome and the drinks were equally as great! I tried the Pisces and the Healer. Both were delicious! The service was great as well. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cool place to hang out! We went to the December tarot club meeting and it was really fun. The drinks are so unique, and I love the ones that come with intentions. Everyone who works there is so nice too.

Yelp
I am all for things witchy... Didn't even know this place existed until 03.10 and a buddy was going for his birthday. Fell in love with it immediately... Absolutely love the vibe inside and out. Love the wall art. Love the dark ambience (fucking scratches all my Scorpio itches). Had a N/A spell drink and thoroughly enjoyed laughing with friends in a packed (they were close to hitting capacity) room people watching. Has stairs leading up to an area with a different but equally beautiful vibe. I rated 5 stars based on my preferences and do have to say some drinks were pricey(ish) and nothing out of this world different or special. But this place gives me all the good feels and I know I will be making a point to keep coming back. Stay safe. Stay kind.
google avatar

Margo B.

Yelp
The services pretty good. It is all about the ambience there had a nice relaxing time. We were a little disappointed a few things especially the dessert menu. It was a little piece of chocolate as big as a quarter that was about six dollars.
google avatar

Xavier D.

Yelp
Love this place ! I can't wait to go back. This was my first time here but I love the cocktails and the concept and the basement bar feel. There is only two things I want to say about the place. 1. They don't have any servers so you have to go to the bar and walk back to your table with your drink, I think maybe they should think about adding someone to the staff in the future especially for the back area hard to walk up the stairs with a full drink. 2 this was only the second weekend they were open but it's felt the furniture / decor was a little lacking. Just needed a bit more to feel complete but I won't give them too much grief. I want to go back so I can give them 5 star !! The cocktails and service was great !!

Joey R.

Yelp
Stellar cocktail and great service at this bar. Ambiance is spectacular. Great place to have a good time with friends.

Maura G.

Yelp
I had really high hopes for this bar. I was so in love with the concept, but the execution was poor. Not witchy enough for a "witch" bar. Drinks were over priced and lacked any pizzazz. Overall, underwhelming.
google avatar

Pamela C.

Yelp
I visited on opening night and I really liked the vibe and atmosphere. The staff was wonderful and the drink was yummy! Yes it's a little pricy but right now every local business is dealing with higher prices from purchasers resulting in higher prices for customers. I would go back!

Lindsay P.

Yelp
Excellent drinks and a cool atmosphere. The drinks were wonderful, even if they are a bit expensive. Hoping the prosperity spell works! The host greeted us and found a nice sitting area for us. He was so much fun and made us feel very welcome! We will be back.

Susan T.

Yelp
I was very excited to try out this new spot after reading all about it. Concept is great - execution not so much. No coasters or spells. No crystal balls or really any decor that set the mood. Packed and if you weren't sitting at the bar, you had to wait in line to order a drink and take back to your table. Expensive for an OK drink. I asked where the "coasters" were for ordering spell drinks, and she looked at me like I was nuts. Again, great idea, poor execution. Too bad.

Cole L.

Yelp
The idea is cute but they have some things to work out. Went there on a Saturday evening at 7 (so of course expected it to be busy). There were only 2 bartenders for a packed bar. You wait in a long line and then when it's your turn you have to show your ID and anyone else you are ordering for. This was a hassle as I went up and ordered for my group and could be solved by checking ID's at the door. It was also SO hot, like uncomfortably so. Lastly, the drinks were underwhelming and tasted like juice, could not taste the alcohol. Would be nice if they hired more bartenders and or offered table service.

Teresa J.

Yelp
I had been so looking forward to going. And the day came my friend and I made the hour trip down to Hamtramck. The area was fine. The parking lot is small. The building is cute on the out side. My friend loved the rainbow flag out front. We go in and were greeted by a very nice door man. Who ended up being the nicest human on staff. The in side was just what you would expect. We were enjoying our experience. Things felt a little off but you know you just brush those feelings to the side. They are busy, understaffed, what have you. But before we could finish our first drink and deciding on our next, it became blatantly clear that the 2 Crone's at the bar were not cool enough and not welcome. I read another review with a similar complaint so they are obviously looking for a certain demographic and if you don't fit it please don't bother spending your hard earned money there. We did not get a second drink cashed out and left. The experience was ruined.
