This Detroit Restaurant Donated Its Food to Local Charity on Mothers Day - Eater Detroit

"When a power surge forced the Block in Midtown to close suddenly on Mother’s Day, the ownership behind the popular brunch spot decided not to let the grits, chicken wings, and other favorite menu items prepared for the day to go to waste. Owner Stephanie Byrd told WDIV that when she learned that she would have to close the restaurant on one of the biggest brunch days of the year on Sunday, she choose to donate the unused food (which she estimated cost between $5,000 and $6,000) to Food Rescue US-Detroit, a nonprofit that transfers excess fresh food from restaurants and other food businesses to social service agencies focused on addressing food insecurity." - Serena Maria Daniels

Midtown Happy Hour Mainstay the Block Plots Metro Detroit Expansion - Eater Detroit

"Midtown dining spot the Block is considering an expansion to metro Detroit, DBusiness reports. The restaurant, known for its casual American food and affordable happy hour specials, is reportedly looking at several suburban areas for new locations including Royal Oak and St. Clair Shores. The Block is also preparing to finally take advantage of the sunshine by opening an 8-seat patio this spring along Woodward Avenue. There’s even a new carryout menu in the works for those who prefer to eat on-the-go. The owners of Flood’s Bar and Grille opened the Grille Midtown at 3919 Woodward Ave. in 2013, but shed the name and the decor in 2015 in an effort to appeal to a broader clientele. The Block was unveiled in September 2015. It’s been going strong ever since." - Brenna Houck

Happy Hour here is very worth it. Strong drinks for a good price. Our server was super sweet and attentive. We ordered the wings, salmon sliders, salmon with broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes and both cheesecakes for dessert. Everything was really good! 😋 definitely will be back soon. Only complaint is that the music was up very loud and everybody seemed to be shouting to talk over it.

The seasonal 🍉mimosa with mint was the best thing I ordered. My eggs bacon and French toast were mid. The decor and atmosphere is so dope! I was def expecting more flavor when I ate my food. The dj was jamming soulful tunes and our bartender server was attentive and it didn’t take long to take our orders or bring the food. Even though they brought my eggs and bacon out and I had to wait for my French toast and since I wanted the picture, my food was not warm and I wish they brought everything out together overall it was a nice experience and I’m glad I supported this black business. Try them out for yourself and let me know what you think.

My wife and I had an amazing first experience at this establishment, everyone was so nice and friendly we were greeted right away with a smile and felt very welcomed. The vibe within the restaurant is amazing. Love the music going and atmosphere. Our waitress was very helpful and nice...we literally got our food and drinks within 15 minutes in a beyond packed restaurant. The food was INCREDIBLE! Seasoned and cooked to perfection....the Woodward wings I highly recommend, they were incredible along with the short rib skillet...unreal. If you are in the downtown area this place is a MUST try!

Drinks were great, the food was very tasty and the peach cobbler cheesecake was amazing. The server was attentive. The only complaint is that the acoustics are terrible! And the music was unnecessarily loud. Next time I'll order the food to go.

I loved everything except the bartender today on 6/19/25. I grab a drink before my party arrived. She told me she needed to hurry up so I had to pay fast . I didn’t get to even read the tips options because she was rushing me , when I hit no tip she grunted loudly in front of my face. Very rude but the hostess was amazing and our waiter. Will be back but didn’t like the bartender getting upset because I didn’t tip her for one drink I received!!!

Ambience was very cute, food was delicious and the DJ was a VIBE!!!!!! The service was impeccable and our experience motto for their brunch is once you are seated you are family. Join them if you’re local or traveling you wont help but to leave STUFFED AND SATISFIED!!!

Yelp
We were in town for the Detroit Tigers opening day game and looking support black-owned businesses or restaurants. We found this place and we are not disappointed. The hostess who greeted us when we walked in was all smiles and super friendly. She sat us on the side where the bar is but there was also a side with nothing but tables so if you didn't want to be near the bar you didn't have to be. There was plenty of light from the huge windows in the front. The menu you access by scanning a QR code and it comes up as a PDF on your phone. The menu is a bit limited but I think that's so that they can focus on what they do well and that is definitely the wings! The wings had some sweet chili on them and everybody was eating them so we had to try them and they were absolutely amazing! They were fried hard like we like them, super sticky and sweet, and not huge like you wonder what was done to them to make them grow so big. Haha. The burger was delicious also; it was juicy and crunchy on the edges and a nice size especially considering it was like a $20 Burger (I took a star for this) . The prices were a bit high but you pay for the quality I guess. I also got a drink called "Say Less" which the name alone cracks me up. It was lemonade raspberry and dusse. This drunk was $16. Good but the bartender has a heavy hand, FYI if you driving. We also got something called shotgun shrimp which was similar to boom boom shrimp but not as saucy. Also great. Esp with these little things that look like cherries but they weren't there were some kind of pepper little red pepper. Yum! Plenty of street parking. It's also within walking distance of Wayne State University and a bakery. There's lots of seating. The food came really fast and fresh. The walls are decorated in really cool art that it seems to be locally done as it references midtown and the cass corridor of Detroit. I definitely plan to go back here and would urge anyone to stop by. Even on our way out the hostess asked us if we needed a bag and then bagged it for us ...we had two little boxes. Lol. It was a really friendly inviting atmosphere and the food was great and I would come back anytime.

Yelp
A lil on the spicy side but pretty tasteful and fulfilling app for happy hour. I would order again. Spent a Saturday early evening at the bar and it was pretty crowded. Reservations were encouraged for table seating. Staff were nice.
google avatar

Delvis L.

Yelp
Brunch on Sunday is vibe! You must make reservations in order to not wait a long for your seat. The food and service is awesome! Be warned though. You only have an hour plus minutes to enjoy your time here. It's only right , so everyone else can eat and have fun too.
google avatar

Yelp
What a beautiful time! Came on Mothers Day weekend Saturday for brunch. From the time we walked in, the atmosphere was fabulous! We didn't have reservations, but we did arrive close to the time of opening. We waited less than 10 minutes for a table, so that was exciting! The staff was amazing and the DJ was top-notch! The drinks, the food, all wonderful. We were laughing and singing the entire time. We even got up and hustled, per the dj request. There is an 18% gratuity per table, so be aware of that. The service is exceptional, so I feel that's appropriate. I can definitely see myself returning.

Yelp
So I came for brunch. Actually it was kind of an accident LOL. I was supposed to go to one brunch spot but they had a out of this world wait. So while waiting we went to the block. And the block wasn't super full. So we just said let's just sit here and drink, and then we said let's just sit here and eat LOL. Service was good. No complaints about that. The guy who will served us came out and shafted up with us. One of my friends had a relative back there. He even came out to kick it with us as well. I enjoy the environment so this was a hit for me. If you come here, be aware that it's street parking. Depending on what time of day it is, you may have to pay. I think that I was on a Sunday so I didn't have to worry about that part, but there's street parking on Woodward or around the corner from it as well so it's basically kind of get it how you live. Spinach dip - spinach dip was really good. I would definitely recommend this being something to try. We had like six people at the table and I kind of wanted more! But it was really good. Had the right amount of cream in it and it made it savory. Double down burger - Now this burger, I had no reason to eat this LOL but it was good. The burger came on a plate with a bunch of melted cheese on it. So if you're a lactose intolerant person and it's an issue, you cannot touch this LOL. But, it was super good regardless though. If you look at the picture, you'll get it LOL. Chicken lettuce wraps - those lettuce wraps were fire! They came with some lettuce and you just dumped the toppings in. But the toppings that they gave you, the flavor was off the charts! I thoroughly enjoyed them. Chicken sausage - Chicken sausages chicken sausage. It depends on how well done it is. I like mine with a little bit of crisp to it so they did that. Grits - The grips were good. They tasted like they actually seasoned them and I could appreciate that. Overall, I'll definitely go back to the block. I've been going to the block since at first was established, and it typically doesn't miss. It's good for happy hour even more so. But when I'm home, the block is solid!

Yelp
My partner & I went here on Juneteenth around 1:35p or so! The restaurant was full as expected. It was very loud! We were told 15min wait because we didn't have a reservation. We were actually sat in 9 mins. But the food took long to come out. Over an hour to be exact. Ppl who arrived after us were eating before us. As we complained to the server, she sent over 2 drinks on them & the manager accompanied the bill. We were disappointed that the app came out with the food & our side salads weren't right away either! We adored every thing we ordered though. The salmon burger, the salmon blt, short rib fries & the 4 say less congacs. & the drinks had the liquor taste on top for whatever reason. Lol we felt a good buzz. We'll be back to support this black owned business but they need to speed up the process & treat customers w/ urgency. I honestly think the waitress forgot to put our order in, yet she blamed the kitchen for only having 2 cooks! She was really nice & caring though. Oddly some man ran the food & questioned did we order our appetizer when our waitress delivered it to us!

Yelp
Ordered the Cajun pasta; sweet Chilli wings; fries; and sweet potato cheesecake . Food was definitely delicious. The service was quick and punctual. The environment was very loud but, overall everything was good.

Yelp
Came to visit Detroit for big cousin milestone birthday BIG 50. I would say the ambiance was cool and relaxing but upbeat with the guest. Greeted once arrived and seated. The food I can say was a hit and no issues at all. I had salmon breakfast with eggs and potatoes with side of cheese grits. Those cheese grits had jalapeño in it and let's just say I told my husband we have to try it that way. It was shots passed out due to celebrations and it was exciting. Felt like home.

Yelp
I went during happy hour , Wings were delicious and the margarita was just ok. It was a little too sweet
google avatar

Yelp
We were there of an evening. The place was pretty full, so I'll cut them a little slack. But you would think with the way they serve certain foods, that napkins would be an abundance for the diners. We all had the burgers at the table along with an order of wings. Not a napkin in place. I had to ask, and at that they didn't bring enough for everyone at the table. I was not a fan of the burger, for the price point, it should've been a whole lot better. The fact that they cut it in half and stick it in a cheese sauce was not appetizing. The wings were tasty, on the upside. It's a nice space open and fun. I would give it another chance, try something else on the menu to see if I had a better experience.

Yelp
First time visiting Detroit and read rave reviews about brunch and the music. Parking was easy and so was arriving at the restaurant being seated and ordering. Ebony our server had a great attitude, food was prompt was excellent, even attempting to teach me to hustle and Tamias line dance. You shouldn't definitely book if you haven't

Yelp
We had a very nice dinner on a Wednesday - we just missed happy hour, but would return for that! 3:30-6:30. I like the vibe - lively with views of Woodward Ave. There is always an eclectic mix of people walking by. Our server Van was attentive and friendly, and made our special requests for us. Drinks and food came out fast, and they gave a very nice pour on my hubby's drink. The food here is better than I expected. They have a rather small menu, but I think that works in their favor, because everything tasted really good. The wings looked a little dark, but were juicy on the inside and very flavorful - seasoned well and the homemade buffalo sauce was very yummy. They also have the good ranch here. Our salads were very fresh with nice spring mix and veggies, and my salmon and broccoli was seasoned and cooked absolutely perfectly. I didn't even ask for hot sauce. The salmon was smoky and juicy and tasted so good. And when I asked for double broccoli instead of potatoes, that wasn't a problem at all. It was really fresh and perfectly cooked - a very nice healthy dinner. My hubby had the double down burger and added bacon, and fries. The burger patty itself was actually seasoned and cooked really well with high quality meat. The homemade cheese sauce is dangerous! It's so good, you'll want to dip fries in that for sure. The fries were super crisp and seasoned; excellent fries. All in all, a very good meal. I will say that their bathroom could have used a little cleaning, and the hallway leading to the restrooms has chairs lined up and looks like a storage area - not the vibe. This aspect keeps them from being a 5-star place. That won't keep us from returning though. The food and service was excellent and we really appreciate the fresh ingredients and cooking skills here. Check them out!

Yelp
The Ambience of this old building being revamped was well done. Very Modern and clean. The tables are still new, the floors are not sticky. The bar is very well equipped with hooks under the counter for women's purses or what it's. The service was quick, friendly with smiles. And the food was served promptly. R&B is the music being played at a moderate sound. The food was good too. My wife and I would come back again.

Yelp
I enjoyed lunch at The Block this week. I joined my friend for a belated birthday lunch. I found it a cute casual space to enjoy one of the busiest areas in Detroit. The menu is straightforward, not a lot of fussiness. We both chose the short rib tacos. It was a great choice. I would definitely have it again. My friend loved his tacos and the atmosphere as well. We sat at the bar because the restaurant was expecting a large crowd from the neighboring orchestra hall. Every dish I saw looked appealing. The patrons at the bar all seemed familiar with the restaurant. That gave it a neighborhood bar kind of feel. It seemed like a great place for afterwork drinks. I took a piece of chocolate cake to go. I didn't care for it, unfortunately. However, I would go back to try more menu items. The staff was very professional and friendly.

Yelp
Do not go here if you have any standards in food quality or service. It took us 15 minutes to be greeted by our waitress. 45 minutes to get our appetizers with mains shortly after. Mains were overcooked and stale from sitting under headlamps for too long. Waitress didn't care to check on us and another worker gave delivered most of our meal. Food was below standard for this price and tasted like it sat for a while under a heat lamp. Don't go here. I don't say this lightly because I'm a local, but there are plenty of other black owned establishments to support, this is not one of them.

Justin A.

Yelp
If I could give less than a 1 I would. But that's not possible but really should be. Made reservations got there a little early and was immediately seated. Proceeded to sit for 20 min before being acknowledged and right when we were about to book reservations at another restaurant (that we should have went to) the waitress brings waters over. Put in apps and food immediately and she said she would submit the apps right away. Waited another 35-40 minutes for the app to be brought. Then the waitress says your food is up to do you want me to hold it. I didn't want my food sitting under lamps so the food was brought immediately. It was an overcooked inedible mess. The waitress was very nice and kind. But this is my second time I have tried. Won't be back. The hard part is I love to support black owned establishments it's important to me. But this is disappointing to have such bad service and an equal amount of total lack of care. They're others in this area that knock it out of the park to support
google avatar

LaKita H.

Yelp
Food was mid, tasted like everything had been precooked and sitting waiting to be served. Nothing was piping hot so I can't assume it was cooked to order. Advertised "short rib" was really pot roast. Whole wings were really small.

Yelp
Second time here the food was mediocre salmon slider was def bland my sister had.... and I had the bbq wings which I must say was really good and they give you a good portion and the menu is VERY SHORT... outside of brunch menu which is only on Saturday and Sunday's... the service was great our waitress was attentive no complaints there.. the ambiance of the restaurant is nice and relaxing with rnb playing in the background I enjoy that other than that i probably wont be back a third time

Yelp
Sunday brunch is good! I was surprised that I had to compile my own brunch from the sides on the menu, but was happy that I did! The drinks are awesome and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that they even have a DJ for brunch. He celebrated birthdays with rounds of shots and everything. Lots of fun!
google avatar

Raven W.

Yelp
The lady who greets people at the door was friendly. I've been here before. I decided to order the same thing again. I ordered the mac and sweet chili wings. The wings normally have a bit of kick to it. This time it didn't. The sauce really didn't have flavor. The mac was good once I added salt & pepper. For some reason they add people to the same bill without confirming. It was not a big party. It was just a friend and I. I had to ask if the waitress put our bill together because my bill seemed high. That's when she informed me they automatically combine bills unless customers ask for separate bills. I think it's best to just ask the customer. Once my bill was separated, I couldn't see if gratuity was added or not because the total amount was only showing on the device. I asked if the gratuity was added already, and the waitress walked away. I looked on the site to see that gratuity is added.

Yelp
I was going to a concert at the DSO with my sister last Thursday night and saw this place on the map and decided to try it since it was so close. We didn't make reservations but didn't have any problems getting seated. Loved how it is decorated, I didn't get to take any pictures but very modern/trendy but cozy at the same time. The food was excellent. I got the pepperoni flatbread and a strawberry smash. All the food being brought out looked delicious so I will definitely be back to try more of their menu.

Yelp
Well nothing like Sunday Brunch at the Block. You'll find parking on the side streets. This particular Sunday we were treated by a DJ and lots of group parties. The food is fantastic! We had the lettuce wraps for an appetizer, shrimp and grits, and short rib breakfast skillet. Also consumed a carafe of the mimosa of the month. A glittery carafe of goodness- it was quite possibly my favorite mimosa ever! It was super loud during our meal as a group of about 15 ladies was having a good time! Definitely worth the stop it was fantastic! Can't wait to try and order off the regular menu! A few minor service shifts and it's a five!

Yelp
I've been to The Block a number of times since my first review in 2015 when uit was fairly new to me. Now, I can say hat the food and the service are both excellent! Whether I get a salad with shrimp, a salmon burger, or a full entree plus dessert, I leave very pleased with what I had and with how it was served. And I love that the prices are reasonable at a time when so many other restaurants are asking for crazy money for everything. The Block is one of my favorite places to dine, and several of my friends feel the same way!
google avatar

Britane B.

Yelp
This was my first time having The Block. I honestly didn't even know about them. But thanks to my bff coming into town we took a ride downtown and ran into this place. Of course she knew all about it. The ambiance is great for after work and just chilling around. The service was freaking great. The food was absolutely amazing and I wasn't too hungry so we got small plates but I am def going back.

Yelp
Larese Larese Larese Baaaabyyyyy. It was late so we didn't expect much, but hoped for an upbeat superstar server. Lárese is well briefed & delightful. Presents with a constant smile. Fun yet professional; didn't overstep... Offered a wonderful balance. Gracious... Efficient... Responsive... Friendly... Made spot-on helpful suggestions. She was a good time. And Gorgeous. Thank you for making our quick, last-minute, end-of-the night choice, unregrettable. Nothing radical... but satisfying. The fabulous helping of pasta was actually delicious. We were actually headed to Fishb__nes for a carry out order of Pasta Orleans. Would definitely get The Block's again. Loaded with shrimp... Extremely sharable! Hope Chef will blacken the opaque shrimp for me next time... Sweet chilli wings were flavorful & sizzling. Nicely charred. *And get this... Larese wasn't even our lead server (who by the way was wonderful, also.) Larese wouldn't even accept our extra 20% tip we added on top of the 18%. She exclaimed, "I don't want to take it from another woman --- I would never." See ya soon, Larese. Hubby will try salmon ceasar next time. Looked enticing! @shop_food_travel

Yelp
So we stopped here for a bite . I like the ambiance right off Woodward right up the street from garden bowl. I ordered blackened salmon Caesar salad which was not bad but the Salomon definitely needed to actually be blackened. But the tasty wings on the appetizer menu I picked the sweet chili which were very tasty and I recommend you try. However the waitress was very lazy which I didn't understand but when the bill came I understood perfectly she gets automatic gratuity. First let me start off by saying this restaurant would have gotten 4 stars if the waitress wasn't so horrible. First she brings out waters and then disappears for I don't know how long then my guest comes and orders coffee which she brought her in a dirty cup with literally dried up food on the outside of the glass . That was so gross so we had to ask the host to get another coffee because the waitress was again on a disappearing mission then the appetizer comes which the chef brought out and the waitress never brought extra plates for the appetizer so I had to go find her to get extra plates horrible service. Then the food comes out FINALLY. Not to mention it was a gnat flying around. The restaurant was not busy at all so NO Excuse for the waitress giving bad service . But I see what she was doing once the bill came which she would of been tipped more than the gratuity had she not been so bad. To top off everything we got a to go order separately and she brought another check with gratuity on it for herself as well . Sad . Like when do to go orders have gratuity. Restaurant had a chance.... but the waitress ruined this experience. Will not be returning. Hostess was really nice and helpful and so was the manager who offered free dessert which I turned down but nice guy. But no I won't be returning . Try a to go order from place but do NOT recommend sitting down. Which is sad because this could of been a really nice spot.

Yelp
Detroit , I finally had brunch at "The Block" and I must say I'm impressed !! I was asking my friends of places to go and they said we have to go to this black owned spot called The Block . Music was hitting and the vibe really nice . Good food and my only complaint is no open table or reservations that's what made my 5 stars a 4 . I had the chicken and French toast and side of eggs , potatoes and peach cobbler French toast as well . Didn't have a drink but the waiter brought us shots for the heck of it . My waitress was amazing "Light Skin" but cutie who made it a vibe .

Yelp
Overall, we had a great first experience at The Block. The reservation system was easy to navigate, and we were able to get in with our party of 5 before a concert. We were seated in the bright and vibrant restaurant. It was upbeat albeit it pretty loud, but it didn't detract from the experience. We ordered the spinach dip and Brussel sprouts as apps from the happy hour menu. Both were tasty and came out quickly. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. Mine was a simple pan seared salmon with brocollini and potatoes. It was delicious. My only negative take is that the bathrooms were rather dirty and needed some love. But, it was pretty busy so that may be why.

Yelp
My friend and I went to the Block for Sunday brunch. I've dined during happy hour and dinner, so brunch was a new experience. Let's say it doesn't disappoint. We made a reservation via Open Table. So we started with drinks. I got the frozen mango margarita, which is always delicious and my friend got a mimosa. I ordered the shrimp and grits with a side of potatoes. Super good, loved the hind of jalapeño! My friend got the Strawberries and Cream French Toast which is seasonal. She loved it! The DJ was a vibe and played a good mix of old and new. Parking was also easy to find. Highly suggest for brunch or dining in general!

Yelp
THE BLOCK is delicious! Ambiance is cool, chill, friendly. Service was GREAT! Van was very nice! Very versed on the menu and social. Nice guy! We ordered the Tito's punch and Frozen Mano Margarita, both were very delicious! For an appetizer we had the Brussels very delicious. Full of flavor, maybe cooked a bit harder next time with more bacon pieces. For dinner we had chicken and French toast, spring chicken and a side of the Alfredo Mac. Everything was full of flavor, seasoned well, nice portions, and hot! We cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
The food is what makes this place as there is little to tout about the atmosphere or service. To me, this is an elevated twist on soul food in a good way! Baked Chili-Pepper wings were delicious. The bacon brussel sprouts definitely hit the veggie spot. The water and soda tasted as if the gun hadn't been cleaned in some time. Everyone eating during the late-lunch time period of the day, seemed to be a regular and acknowledged by the staff with pleasantries. I wish I had time to enjoy some of the cocktail creations that were offered because they sounded delicious.

Yelp
SORRY TO BE TYPING THIS IN ALL CAPS, BUT IT'S LOUD IN HERE. IT'S 11:30 SUNDAY MORNING AND THERE'S A DJ BLASTING TUNES. I LIKE THE MUSIC, BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE SO LOUD ON A SUNDAY MORNING? After a while, I got used to saying something to my wife, her saying "WHAT?" and me doing the same when she tried to talk to me. The great news, though, is that almost everything I loved about The Block is still here, and just as good as before. I'm heartbroken that they no longer offer the flat iron steak breakfast. This was my favorite breakfast at any restaurant. While I mourn the passing of the flat iron steak, I found a new favorite: the Fiesta Skillet, a symphony of Chorizo, Andouille Sausage, Green Peppers, and Scrambled Eggs, with a generous amount of sausage (and heat). The chicken and French toast is a great spin on chicken and waffles, and really an improvement. The chicken had an amazing dry rub, and the French toast was deliciously sweet. And, the service was great. You should still make a reservation if you want to eat here: I saw several people get turns away when they tried to walk in. The Block it's still so great that I don't mind coming back here and shouting to be heard over the music. The real music is being made in the kitchen.

Yelp
The Block does it again! We are here for lunch, which surprisingly is a DJ brunch!!! GET RESERVATIONS, or you will be seated at the bar. We do not mind the bar. The meal pictured is what I am enjoying. Their signature wings and strawberry French toast with bourbon syrup. I also had a side of jalapeño cheddar grits( sooo good), and the mimosa of the month, caramel apple ( I could have lived without this), it was meh. The food was delicious as usual. My husband had the short rib skillet, which in my opinion was chuck roast, but so what, it was plentiful and delicious and tender, covered in an amazing hollandaise. The food was a treat. The lack of the additional star was the DJ. The music was great, but it was just too loud. I still would come back during brunch, and risk my eardrums. It was just that good! Thank for the food and quick service Block restaurant.

Yelp
Experienced the Sunday brunch. The food was good. The signature wings are a must have. I ordered the wings and French toast and was pleased. It's a nice restaurant, and the service was good. Would definitely recommend

Yelp
First time eating at The Block today. Ordered the beef short rib skillet and a side of cheese grits. The food was good.. but do not advertise short ribs if you are going to use a different cut of meat. I know the difference between short ribs and pot roast meat. And it didn't taste like short ribs at all! Nevertheless the food was good. I think the cheese grits was the best grits I have ever had. I normally would have to dr my grits up with salt and pepper. There was none needed! It was seasoned to perfection. Worth the right amount of cheese. I will frequent here again. Maybe they used a different cut of meat due to it being Mother's Day, really still not an excuse. Some people can tell the difference

Yelp
Neat little place right on Woodward. I had the short rib skillet which was excellent and my wife had the fennel and pear salad. She loved hers as well. On Saturdays, they seem to have a DJ in the restaurant. I liked the music but it was very difficult for my wife and I to have a conversation because the music was very loud. All in all, good food and would try again...just maybe not on a early Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Made my first trip to The Block today. Really nice location. An easy walk from Tiger's stadium and LCA and one block from the DSO. What a find. We were greeted by a very friendly staff and served by an awesome guy named Van. He walked us through the menu answered all our questions about the choices and how they are prepared. Our table had the Chili Salmon, Braised Short ribs and Chicken and French toast and the Pear salad. We also had a side of the most delicious Mac N Cheese. Everyone was thrilled with their food. It was all prepared very carefully and tasted amazing. The place is smartly decorated and has a very nice, friendly, comfortable vibe. Definitely will make The Block a regular stop.

Yelp
In Detroit on assignment for a couple of weeks and wanted to hit up a fun brunch. I googled things to do and the Block came up. I made a reservation which is needed because it was pretty busy on a Sunday. We started off with the Mimosa bar which comes with a shot and who can object to that? I ordered the chicken and French toast and it was some of the best French toast I've ever had. It was light and crispy. Just overall amazing. The chicken albeit super tiny were delicious and no sauce was needed. I also ordered a side of chicken apple sausage which was just ok. There is a DJ which makes it for a pretty loud brunch but nothing too crazy. They also close at 3 so getting early is recommended. Overall I had a great time and the food was great. I will definitely circle back before I leave.

Yelp
The Block is the perfect place for Happy Hour. They didn't skimp on the menu. Balance cocktails and delicious chicken wings. The only reason they didn't receive 5 stars was because my brussel sprouts were burnt. They refunded them with no issues.

Yelp
The Woodward Wings I saw on a Channel 4 WDIV feature brought me to the Block, but it's the cajun shrimp pasta that's gonna keep me coming back! Cheesy, saucy, savory, with a little spicy kick along with chicken, andouille sausage, and shrimp? It's as amazing as it sounds and looks in these pics. They give you plenty of it too, this dish can feed two easily. The Woodward Wings are well seasoned and maybe a tad overcooked this time around, but it did not take away from how good they were. My pro tip? Get them naked and try all three sauces they got! I got a side of Block Mac, which was also pretty good though I don't see myself getting the entree size. The $5 side was just a perfect size to get an ample taste. I'll be back for the Cajun shrimp pasta for sure, and can't wait to try the shrimp and grits as well!

Yelp
We went during lunch time to try something new. I'm going to start by saying my friend ate half the Block Mac, Spinach dip, and one drink, he is currently throwing it up in the bathroom. I did not eat the block Mac and you can see from my pictures I ordered and paid for the Cajun Shrimp Pasta but I tried a few bites and did not eat it due to it being over peppered. We did not eat anything before going to this place so i am 100% sure the food is what got him sick. Because he was fine right before. I'm glad I didn't eat the food since my friend got sick and I avoided that all together. The drinks were strong I don't think the frozen koolaid had alcohol even though it was on the cocktail menu. They took forever to bring out our food and the service in general was slow. I would not go back to this place at all. It seems to be mismanaged and whoever is cooking doesn't know what they are doing,

Yelp
This place is a true vibe! We went for Sat brunch at 12:15p (reservation on Open Table) and had a great experience! We loved the live DJ! He played great music and catered to the crowd that was small when we initially got there and was quickly larger when we were leaving. We loved the food!!! Shrimp and grits were perfection! We loved how the French toast wasn't super thick and the syrup was so delicious as was the chicken and potatoes! We will for sure come back when we are home.
