The 2018 Holiday Gift Guide for Denver - Eater Denver

"One-year-old RiNo distillery The Block just came out with its first coffee liqueur made with Novo Coffee and packaged in a sweet and stylish little bottle. But gift givers should also check out the house vodka and seasonal gin bottles, which will add some flair (and function) to anyone’s bar cart." - Josie Sexton

Google
Really fun - stopped in to meet some friends and was blown away by the drinks. I’m a big craft cocktail fan and was especially impressed by Frank’s seasonal gins (he let us try spring and summer). Chill place with laid back vibes. Not stuffy or pretentious like some craft spots tend to be.

Google
The old fashion was good. They have non-alcoholic options. They have a good vibe. We sat in the shipping container. Very hip vibe according to these 40somethings. We enjoyed the rocking chairs.

Google
I'm a big fan of gin, and they make an incredible negroni! Seriously, one of the best! I bought one of their dry gins and saw that they have a pour room in Rino. Gave them a chance and it didn't disappoint. The pour room is rough yet inviting and the staff was amazing!

Google
Came in for a friend’s birthday and was not disappointed. The bar has a stunning display with bottles that are too eye catching to ignore. You can take one home for a comparable price to a nice bottle at your local liquor store - but with significantly better taste. The cocktails are crafted - so know you’ll wait a minute or two longer than your regular gin & tonic, and it’s worth it. The espresso martini, pictured here, was rich and fluffy…and I may not be able to have one elsewhere anymore because it was delectable. Also pictured is the Denver’s Ready - another winner in my book. Overall, the location is well lit, great seating options, and there is always a food truck on the street. Definitely recommend!

Google
I'm sorry to give a 1 Star review but that's all I can give. I visited The Block to try their spirits. All of the chairs at the bar were full (Maybe 6-8 chairs) but I was the only patron sitting at a table. I scanned the menu and decided on doing a flight. The bartenders, 2 of them, were behind the bar talking to each other. I sat for 12 minutes, watching them talk to each other, drink their own drinks, make 2 drinks for men sitting at the bar and they never came to get my order. Maybe I was supposed to go to them but there was no indication of needing to do that to make my order. I finally left and went to Deviation, where I did a flight and a cocktail and bought several bottles and spent $270. Maybe, as a 62 year old, I don't fit The Blocks' target audience. In any case, there are over 100 distilleries in Colorado. I've been to about 60 of them. I will now count that I've been to the Block, but I won't be back.

Google
Wow if you want amazing and unique drinks this is the places. The bartenders are very friendly and helpful when deciding what to choose from the creative and delicious cocktails. They make all their own ingredients from scratch. If I was able to handle more drinks I would have wanted to try them all. They now have their own whiskey along with gin and vodka. Can’t wait to come back and bring friends.

Joey Torres

Google
Tanner is a badass bar tender. Dude made us some of the best cocktails I’ve had in a while. We are visiting Denver From ATL and honestly didn’t think there was a good place to get drinks, but this place proved me wrong. Whenever I come back Denver definitely gonna come give them a visit.

Google
I've been to The Block 10-20 times and I've never had a cocktail I didn't love. There is something for everyone on the menu, and the cocktail descriptions are helpful (and funny at times). Service is welcoming and the patio is dog-friendly and allows outside food. The bar is beautiful, especially the bottles' branding/packaging. Try the flight of the four house made gins!

Yelp
Loved walking in here and into the toasty warm vibe they had inside. Walked over after eating at a nearby ramen spot for a nice digestif hehe. They only serve spirits they distill themselves onsite- vodka, whiskey or gin. They have a lovely craft cocktail menu incorporating their spirits; i tried the pink runway gin drink and my bf had the Mario party - both were good but mine was sweeter and better! Loved the comfy seating and music they had going. It wasn't too packed that you had to wait in line for a drink or seating but still busy enough that it felt like a fun atmosphere. Definitely will be back

Yelp
It was a Sunday in December, despite the large tv the place was almost empty. So our group of 6 was able to snag the large communal table. The vibe is industrial yet, quaint. I ordered a seasonal cocktail, the Cold Pressed which was an olive oil infused vodka cocktail. The ingredients sounds interesting and was very unique and delicious tasting. I wasn't feeling another one and there were limited vodka based drinks so I asked the bartender to come up with a cocktail. She did a great job, creating a fruit forward summery type cocktail. Be sure to make your way down Larimer to Block and great a cocktail. You don't be sorry!

Yelp
Super fun spot to grab a cocktail! They're also open during the day and serving coffee now, with free WiFi! Very work friendly, and also a great spot to meet someone. I saw several people sitting at the bar alone and it was a very welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Nice little gem on the main strip of Rhino. Felt like a neighborhood staple with all the regulars. Older crowd but lively. Drinks were perfection. Delicious and well presented. Be prepared to spend a couple extra bucks but if you're looking for some great drinks you can't miss here.
google avatar

Aleah H.

Yelp
To cut to the chase, the marigold sour is the best whiskey cocktail I've ever had. Perfectly foamy from the egg whites while also balanced from the citrus. I loved it, and loved that it was a donation-driven cocktail, too, to justify the cost. :) The old fashioned was more straight-forward, but also great! We were visiting the area and stopped by based on proximity, but really loved and lucked out on the open street patio! Very approachable and chill while also elevated flavors and distilling! I hope to be back soon!

Yelp
Stopped by this place on a whim and was so impressed! I got a berry gin drink and it was better than I expected!! So delicious. The service was overall good! Kinda slow taking our drink order but got it out quick. It's a small area but has nice outdoor seating to people watch!

Yelp
What a great little gem in RiNo. I love their values and their unapologetic commitment to their craft. I am generally a vodka drinker but am learning to love whiskey more and more. Let me tell you, I fell in love with their Four Grain Straight Whiskey (a blend of red wheat, white wheat, rye oats, and malted barley). This was served in their 'Call Me Old Fashioned' cocktail with panela and aromatic bitters. They have a chill bar next to the distillery that is perfect to hang out and chat with friends or play one of the many games they have on hand. Block Distilling has partnered with Nathaniel Rateliffe's Marigold Project as their non-profit partner. I left with a bottle of their Four Grain Straight Whiskey, so in the word's of Rateliffe, "son of a b-*#!, give me a drink."

Yelp
Yes fun craft cocktails!! I'm a sucker for a drink with egg white in it and had to try the thyme after thyme. It was a unique drink with that creamy finish that only egg white can produce! Husband got the old fashioned that was also tasty! They had a great space with lots of different seating options! Super cute. Everyone was super friendly and helpful as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Sneakily some of the best cocktails in Denver. Unique cocktail options featuring their own whiskey and gin. The Tiger's Blood, in particular, is spectacular, showcasing a gin aged in peach brandy barrels. Perfectly balanced and nuanced throughout, absolutely delicious. A really good vibe and fun hang with great drinks to match!
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of aesthetic breweries and distillery's and they hit the nail on the head here. The interior is cute, very elegant. Large specialty crafted cocktails and samplers to choose from. The gentleman behind the bar was nice and made the drinks perfectly! Both drinks were spirit forward and tasted great. I loved the delicate balance of flavors. I was absolutely obsessed with the spirit bottles! Check them out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
I highly recommend this place for innovative cocktails made from fresh ingredients and delicious, distilled spirits right on site. It's one of three first place we go when we come to town!
google avatar

Jerry O.

Yelp
Young up and coming distillery in Rino. Kraig, Kameron and Mel and their team are making quality craft spirits. Attended a tour and got tons of info on their focus on #everydamdrop. A clear focus. If you enjoy spirits, particularly whiskey, you be a fan. They have a tasting room with a great bar featuring all of spirits, neat or in a cocktail.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun Fact: The Block Distilling in RiNo makes every drop of their spirits in house, using ingredients from the family farm in Missouri. The Block's fall cocktail menu blew me away. I'll admit to being that guy who orders the funkiest drink on the menu, and these fit that bill. Unique and absolutely tasty, you don't want to miss out on these: * Tawanda!!~vodka, green tomato, vanilla, and cinnamon. That's right. Green tomato. As the menu says: Sounds crazy, but damn it's good! Soup Season~winter gin, apple, thyme, bouillon, and TBDC aromatic bitters; a sweet and savory delight, I couldn't walk out without having had a cocktail that includes bouillon. * Not quite as adventurous as I am? Not to worry. They also have more traditional fall flavors available as well the classics from their core menu.

Yelp
I don't know how to compliment this place as much as I want to. Every time I have someone visiting, I take them here I have like six of their bottles at home Their cocktails are always perfect and the service is always good. Everyone is so friendly and the place is so chill and you are able to enjoy a cocktail and relax and spend quality time with friends 10/10

Yelp
On my first ever trip to Denver, I ended up visiting The Block three times because I liked it THAT much. So of course, I had to make it my first stop of this trip. Unfortunately, the interior (which is very vibey) was closed for a private event, so we sat in the shipping container, which is their outdoor seating option. It was sadly less cute, but warm and dog-friendly. I've never had a bad cocktail at The Block, and this time was no different. I got the Cold Front (creamy and delicious - tastes like a boozy Starbucks drink), and my friends had the Espresso Martini (so well made), Smoking Jacket (bold, smokey), and Gemini Sour (also fantastic). Our server was also extremely helpful with her recommendations. We only stayed for one round, but I will happily return the next time I'm in Denver!

Yelp
The cocktail was so great had the berry one ! Mel and Chris were very helpful! Please come see them

Yelp
Awesome distillery that literally makes everything in house. The bartender told me me the only thing they don't make is the tonic water. Drinks were creative and tasty. I got The Great Gazoo which was so refreshing. Perfect for those warm evenings. Definitely recommend this place in you're in RiNo and tired of beer.

Yelp
Came here on Sunday for their Handmade market event, which was amazing and I hope they do this again and again - especially the clothing swap! Love me a local spot that supports other local businesses. Okay, so, the booze. I am team Whiskey and Gin, so Block checked both those boxes. I only did the Whiskey tasting this time but you get I'm coming back for Gin. We bought a bottle of their Marigold Collab bourbon with Nathaniel Rateliff (love him and his Night Sweats) because not only was it tasty, it was for a great cause. My husband ordered an old fashioned and I went with an espresso martini. Both were ace. The bartenders were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and good at their job! Wins all around. Lastly, the decor. Love the vibe here. It's unique and open and lots of comfy seating (though we always opt for sitting at the bar). It's also worth noting doggos are allowed indoors. For this reason alone we'd be coming back!
google avatar

Emma O.

Yelp
Great bar tenders. Table space to sit and socialize. I got the infinite playlist cocktail and it was delicious. 5 stars on the drink alone and everything else was above and beyond.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
First time here and the ambiance was great. The bartenders make killer drinks. The night I went, they were playing 2000s hip hop/rap. I recommend this drink, the marigold I believe is called
google avatar

Ashleigh T.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick drink before dinner. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and had some great recommendations. It was not very busy, and we sat at the bar. We ordered the Cosmo In Retrograde and the Call Me Old Fashioned. Delicious!

Kevin K.

Yelp
The Block was my favorite part of Colorado; we went twice. We did a quick tour with the owner and then a tasting with Mel. Mel was great. Walked us through all the spirits and chatted with us for a while. We came back the next night for drinks and bought a couple of bottles. Their spirits and drinks are amazing. Highly recommend a stop here.

Yelp
I first heard of The Block through WeFunder and figured that I should invest some money into a distillery, but it still took me another 6 months to visit. I came to pick up my Night Sweats bourbon, which is absolutely delicious. Two weekends ago, I was in the area for another event and decided to mosey on over to see The Block in full form. I was NOT disappointed! The bar menu is so delicious and there's so many choices, that I had a hard time choosing something. I told my server the 2 I had narrowed down and told him to surprise me. West of Eden was so delicious and I LOVE the pear flavor. I wanted another drink, but since I drove myself, I had to be responsible so I ordered the no name. Even though it was non-alcoholic, it was equally delicious and the smoked rosemary on top was just the best. If you're in RiNo, you definitely need to stop by and have a drink...or two.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
I continue my search for the perfect Old Fashioned. The Block Distillery does not disappoint. Really empressed with their back story and that everything is made in hous...no blending outsourced spirits to gain age! And if impressed they have bottles to take home!
google avatar

Yelp
Feeling fancy? But you just don't want to get out of your leggings for an insta-worthy cocktail experience. Then, I'd head here. The Block Distilling Co. has sophisticated vibes while keeping with the chill and collective mindset of RiNo. We stopped in here for a few drinks with friends over the weekend. The place was pretty packed with all different walks of people: bachelor party, birthday party, couples on dates, friends meeting for a casual drink, and puppies joining their owners for a day out. It made for a very lively environment. The servers were super nice here, and ultimately looked like they were enjoying their days. We weren't sure what to order so our server helped us decide. When we didn't particularly love the direction she suggested, they happily took the drink off our tab and allowed us to order another. I thought that was really cool and nice because some places will definitely not do that. For me, the drinks were a tad too sweet. However, their presentation and unique diversity of the menu was quite impressive. I'd be interested to go back and try their more spirit forward cocktails. Bonus Note: There are some cocktails that support local charities!
google avatar

Stefanie C.

Yelp
4.5 stars. I've been wanting to come here for awhile! Not a TON of seating but found two spots for me and my friend as we took turns ordering from the bar. Fantastic service and upbeat vibes. I got the Great Gazoo cocktail--spring gin with honeydew, mint, lime, and absinthe tasting notes. Flavor was basically described as a green apple Hi-Chew which SOLD me. Would love to try their other cocktails in the future, which might bump this up to a 5 star review. Overall, The Block comes across as an ideal date night location.
google avatar

Patrick Y.

Yelp
Bottom line: this place has a good vibe to hang out and meet with friends. There's a lot of venue specific cocktails this place makes with their seasoned gin and there are a lot of options for those that want to just sip on beer. Additionally, this place has mock-tails for those designated drivers or for those that want to slow down a bit. The variety of drinks available at this place will suit a lot of different crowds. This place doesn't specifically serve food but it has a co-op with a food truck right outside and a QR code for those that want to partake in some food. The food menu was mostly for sandwiches and not really a lot of options for finger foods or small bites. It's definitely worth to visit if you're in town and looking for a place to lounge with some adult beverages!
google avatar

Jolie F.

Yelp
When you want to kick back in a cool relaxing modern environment, then this is your place! Nice array of cocktails or if you prefer sample some there spirits. The drinks are very well balanced. The bartenders will ask your preferences, which will help to fine balance your perfect drink! If you're try to beat the heat, make a stop here for a relaxing drink!
google avatar

Thanh D.

Yelp
Super cute place for a quick hang out & grab a drink. I believe all of the liquor are crafted by the owners. The service were very friendly when we were there. I got the Wham Bam Thank You Kam and my partner got The Unbearable Lightness. We both really enjoyed our drink. I actually really like mine, I even went for second :) When you get there, you can actually scan for menu. You can also order food from a few places around there just from a click on their menu & it gets deliver to you at The Block Distilling. If you're in the area, definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

Raven T.

Yelp
4th stop on the RiNo bar tour (April 2021)! By the time we made it here, we were pretty lit. The wine at Infinite Monkey Theorem was really good to us. We stumbled, I mean stepped, right outside and across the street into The Block's outdoor seating in a shipping container. I got a tasting flight (if you've read my other reviews you know the deal). To be honest I don't quite remember the spirits. I remember not enjoying the gin (pretty sure it was the winter one), but really liking whiskey. I'll definitely have to give it another go on my next visit to Denver
google avatar

Abbey L.

Yelp
Great local hangout! Per the bartender's recommendation, I tried the great gazoo and he did not steer me wrong. It was very light and refreshing with a subtle honeydew flavor. I love the unique flavors that are combined in the cocktails at this distillery. I like how homey the set up is and all the bartenders were very friendly. Will definitely be back to enjoy the patio and try out more drinks!
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
The Block Distilling Co. was neither the first nor the last stop of the evening. So while details are fuzzy, I remember really enjoying the Graceland cocktail. It is a dessert drink for sure. Can't imagine anyone drinking more than one, but the one is delightful.
google avatar

Angelica B.

Yelp
Yasssss! This place is super chic and welcoming. It was my first time here (my friends are actual members) the drinks are worth the price. The Marigold was delicious for those Whiskey Sour fans and the Lime in the Coconut was surprisingly delicious (I'm not a coconut fan) yet, after tasting it, I became one. They are also pet friendly for those animal lovers. I highly recommend this place for a first date spot or a meet up with your friends spot. I'll definitely be back
google avatar

Kara H.

Yelp
Love the pride friendly representation and donations! We weren't really looking for hard alcohol after hitting up the shake shack and wineries in rino, but after seeing the flag and the friendly bartenders, we wanted to support. We had the for shizzy it's fizzy, which tasted like herbal fruit pebbles and was fabulous. I also had the Jody Fosters Army, which was the best coffee liquor drink I've ever had. Highly highly recommend for great drinks, great service, and lovely decor!
google avatar

Jarred C.

Yelp
This place is what every distillery should be. The liquor is first class. The service is top notch but not pretentious. Jessica's rocking a corduroy shirt and Mel is one of the most real humans you will ever meet. 10/10 would recommend to friends and family.
google avatar

Sunny D F.

Yelp
What a great tour for #yelpwhiskeyweek very informative and tastings excited the taste buds ! Picked up a great new Spring Gin! Can't wait to make my elderflower and spring Gin cocktail
google avatar

Dontae R.

Yelp
Yeah...this is one of the best distilleries I've been to in my life. I have to give a very specific and explicit shout out to Mel for being friendly and mixing up some incredible cocktails and being an amazing educator while me and my GF hung out. I'm a huge gin fan and to experience the breadth of varietals was incredibly exciting. On top of that, the prices were quite reasonable and the overall communal vibe was awesome. And if that wasn't enough, the company's commitment to advocacy can serve as a model for anyone considering opening a business in the food and hospitality space. I can't wait until their gins start being distributed in California. I can't wait until their Amaro starts being distributed in California!!!! Spring and Winter were my two favorite gins. Try the flight and order the Denver's Ready cocktail ASAP just in case it doesn't stay on the menu. Bravo, Block Distilling Co.!
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
This is another place that I did a little bit of research on before I came to Denver. I heard that their service wasn't that great and for me I know how to deal with that. Anyway I just came from Odell which is just across the street so I was already feeling good. I guess since I was already in the area I couldn't pass up having one drink. Little did I know was that I was going to have two drinks because the drink called the Golden Girl had tumeric and coconut milk I believe and it was so damn good!!!!The first drink I had here was an Old-fashioned which was tasty too. They were having a private event and I had to be out of there by 5pm I thought. It was a cool little spot I didn't really look around because I was too busy drinking so I could leave before the event started. I would for sure come here again but I would call ahead to make sure there's no private event going on!
google avatar

Christina U.

Yelp
On very rare occasions have I had the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of a distillery and last night I was lucky enough to have that experience at The Block Distilling Co! From start to finish, Craig, Cameron, and Mel gave us an insider's view of open top fermentation, the history and whiskey-, gin-, and vodka-making process of the distillery (including the naming inspirations of each of their stills), and how much a barrel can influence the flavor, color, and intensity of a bourbon or whiskey. Each of them is a master at their trade: I cannot wait to visit again for #derbyday!
google avatar

Shelly S.

Yelp
Heck ya! This is one of the more interesting and neat places. I and my 22 yr old daughter came here and we are from out of town. We had perfect service and a sweet atmosphere around us. It's small but the people we talked to made this place worldly!
google avatar

Kass A.

Yelp
My sister and decided to stop in here while waiting for a food place nearby to open. We met two very nice bartenders that were making a lot of recommendations to go shopping and food must haves in the city. The mint both ways ways both a refreshing and stiff cocktail. The vibes were a perfect mixture of business and pleasure.

Maggie S.

Yelp
The espresso martini is a must for the start tonight any night! The bartender, Gage, will make sure you're completely satisfied with your drink and the menu is always changing. Definitely stop by next time you're in Rino

Anjuli Y.

Yelp
Gage is the absolute best!! We love it here, the service is amazing and the drinks are great

Seth J.

Yelp
I couldn't be more disappointed. I've been to so many bars that have been successful in their efforts to prove such a pretentious concept. This is not one of them. Warm service, welcoming atmosphere and great communication/education on the actual concept would be a smart place to start. Instead, block distillery has opted for an entitled and pretentious staff, gimmicks to sell the drinks (popsicles, pretzels, excessive garnishing in general), and a "you don't know what you like"/gaslighting approach to a customer's taste. There should be no glorification of making every drop of the drinks in house if they're terrible. Growing every wrong ingredient themselves instead of sourcing good ingredients from anywhere else. Combining ingredients that shouldn't even be spoken in the same sentence: cardamom, all spice, gin, olive brine?! I wish I could say that the gimmick isn't working but the other reviews say otherwise. Maybe block distilling will succeed as long as there is a market for a consumer who values the photographs of their drinks over taste of them.
google avatar

Aurora D.

Yelp
Love this place! Went on the tour and tried all the offerings. All I can say is this crew REALLY cares about their product. The attention to detail is obvious, from sourcing their grain all the way to seasonal drinks at the bar. I can't believe their whiskey tastes that good after only two years. The owners even designed and built the furniture! We also got hungry and tried their waffle truck, which was both fun and delicious. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Jordan J.

Yelp
My girlfriend got a marg and I had an old fashioned. Thanks to Mel, we both got drinks we liked a lot and said goodbye to being 100% sober haha. We both enjoyed this place and Mel being so cool and giving good recommendations to us. We will be back, and with friends too. Thanks again!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
They weren't able to make any other drink except the drinks on the menu. And when I asked for a drink on the menu they ran out. But they should offer a substitute instead and not be super rude about it. We had no faith in the bartender. She wasn't exactly the nicest... and didn't really seem like she knew what she was doing. Cocktails turned out okay. Better cocktails along the strip. But they're just starting out, so 3 stars instead of 2. So I hope it will be better later on. Like with more choices and nicer, friendly, customer-oriented bartenders. And they didn't have whiskey until xx amount of days later. That will be a game changer! It's a cool place though, just need to get more established.
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
Block has great drinks, service, owners, and history. I got a tour for a Yelp event and learned a ton about the business and about the distilling process. Since then, I try to stop in whenever I'm near Larimer St - it's a new favorite!

Tori H.

Yelp
Bartenders take their job way too seriously.. they're all rude as f***. Think they're entitled and make horrible 16$ drinks
