I'm here writing about an incident that happened about a week ago now. It was last Friday night 1/18 and I had gone out to a nice Italian dinner with some girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. Afterwards we headed down to the bars and had been to one prior before ending the night at Blue Beet.
Me along with a group of 6 or 7 people showed up to Blue Beet, walking in after other groups. The line was flowing and I was the 2nd to last person to walk in out of my group (one friend still waiting behind me). I hand the bouncer my ID and expect to just walk in after my friends, but then he asks me to pay a fee. I was thrown off and confused because none of the people in front of me had to pay. But before calling the bouncer out I decided to fact check and called my friends who were just let in if they had to pay, which they replied "no". Then just for the heck of it I had my one friend standing behind me hand him her ID, and what do you know, he said she wouldn't have to pay either.
I stood there shocked as I asked him what his reasoning was for making me pay a fee but not a single people in front or behind me had to. He had no answer. Mind you, this was not my first time at this bar and me and my family have been Newport natives since about the 50's. I am a woman of color so you can take that as you will and can even scroll through reviews to see that I am not the first one this kind of thing has happened to.
Frustrated, I ask to speak to a manger followed by me stepping to the side to try to get around him. He then shoves me back which gets me even more upset. I shove back obviously and tell him that he can't put his hands on me. He was unnecessarily aggressive and started to grab me to bring me to the door. He had no right to lay a single finger on me and what he should have done is gotten the manager like I asked. But instead he decided to get physical.
For about 30-40 min my friends tried to get a manager outside to speak to me but none of them showed that they cared, and after not being attended to I decided to leave.
This is a picture of my arm which shows how aggressive this bouncer was on me. Attached is also a legal statement saying that bouncers DO NOT have the same rights as security or police. They also DO NOT have the right to physically remove a person.
My peers and myself reached out to Blue Beet, to try to get the name of the bouncer. Our first call we supposedly were speaking to the female general manager, who claimed she would return our call within the day with the information we wanted. (Though to not know your bouncers names on the spot is a little bizarre to me). We received no phone call back and decided to call back 2 days later, who we then spoke to a female employee who told us she would have her male general manager call us back around 8pm when he got in. Yet again we got no phone call back.
I've never felt so defeated, embarrassed and frustrated in my life. The staff as well as the managers did not care, did not look into the situation and lied to us just to get us off their backs. I will never go back there but that won't affect them at all. I just hope people read this and no what kind of people are running that place and where their priorities stand. And for anyone that this has happened to there, know you're not the only one.
DO BETTER BLUE BEET.
