"Blue Beet’s menu, a worn piece of paper taped to the wall, retains a loyal clientele who come in solely for the beef stroganoff and filet. This three-storied bar is subdued on the weekdays, offering bargoers a quiet corner to talk or an open-air rooftop to watch sports. But on the weekends, Blue Beet is packed and lit up by local musicians." - Jordan Morosco

Feels like a hidden gem in plain sight, a little to the right of the beaten path by the Newport pier. Comfortable enough to be a great local hang, mysterious enough for a secluded date night, big enough for the whole group. Welcoming staff. Didn't order food this time.

B M

Google
One of the staple bars in Newport for 30+ years. Like a dive bar but for a younger crowd not just old salty drinkers. Great patio on the top floor, full bar, bands play some nights. Lots of fun to be had and you will definitely make some new friends.

Boss Glass & Door

Google
Established in 1912. Hole in the wall. Walked in served quick . Cocktails and 🍺. Food friendly Burgers wings French dip. Plenty of seats for groups. Lots of history. Cash or card. Great place to visit. Old town feel.

Robert Acton

Google
I went here years ago it was pretty cool. A very pleasant atmosphere and at times they have live music

Dean Zeilinger

Google
Waited for five minutes at an empty bar last night and not one bartender acknowledged me or my girlfriend. Tall male bartender and short female bartender. Saturday night at 9:20pm, one other person at the bar waiting for a drink and not a single word from either bartender for a good 5 minutes.

Google
Always a great time here. Great staff, always super friendly, good vibes up on the rooftop patio, and good food

C & J Frey

Google
Nice rooftop for a drink or food. We ordered the Chirizo Tots and they were great! It can get busy at times and the staff does what they can to keep up. Worth a visit.

Google
The live music was awesome, it was a jazz/rock band and I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did but they were really good. The food was also very yummy, I had the ahi wraps with fries and the sriracha aioli on the wrap is my new favorite oh and the fries were probably the best I've had, I'm not sure if they all come out like that but they were crisp with a crunch without being all dried out. The candles at the tables along with the live music and the great food made it a really awesome place to eat and hang out. I'll be back soon for more.

Mike R.

Yelp
We went with 10 of us to celebrate a birthday. Typical busy Friday night the band was really excellent but the main bartender really had no interest in serving anyone. I guess we are a little bit on the older side I'm sure he just prefers to serve hot young women. Probably won't be back. Far too many places to spend the kind of money we did that night.

Cindy Y.

Yelp
Sweet rooftop deck off the beaten path in Newport Beach. Decent food, bountiful sunshine, great service. Apparently there's music downstairs and it seems a little divey below, but the rooftop is sunshine and happiness and good vibes.

Hayley H.

Yelp
Minor crowd + good bar food. This combo is hard to Beet! Blue Beet is a dive bar that sits pretty close to the Newport Beach Pier. This spot is known for its multi level rooms, including a pretty cool rooftop area that overlooks the ocean. On a clear day you can even see Catalina! Despite being in a very popular area, Blue Beet is hidden in a small alcove. It doesn't get as much traffic as it's neighboring bars, which makes it the perfect local hang. They also serve food, which is a major win in my book. I ordered the chicken nachos and the pickle fries. Both fried munchies were made to perfection for a drunk stomach. I ended up sharing these with a group of 5+ and it was more than enough food to get the job done.

Alli B.

Yelp
Good music. Decent food. Mediocre drinks, so stick to beer. Drab environment. 0 customer service.

Khoi H.

Yelp
Came here for some light night food and I have to say that the Blue Beet is a let-down, along with the high prices as well. I ordered a quesadilla, which came out to be $12 for a tiny portion. It was good nonetheless, but I won't be back here again! Beer is crazy expensive here as well, but I'm not surprised since we are at Balboa.

Kenzie F.

Yelp
I'm a Newport Beach local, do not go to this bar. The door guy will let anyone in that pays "extra" while there's a line of 20+ people. Extremely unprofessional. News flash, the people that keep your places open in the slow months/winter are the local. If you treat us like shit we will find other places to go. Do better.

Sandy S.

Yelp
Came here for the happy hour they advertised, and the bartender just informed us their website (that lured us in) has incorrect information. It says they have live music every day and that's not true. He said they should have live music on Thursday -Monday. It also states they have $5 drinks and $5 martinis for Happy Hour and he said that's not true. Well drinks are $2 off the reg $9 price during happy hour. A martini is double the price. We asked for a correct Hapoy Hour menu since it's not correct online and he said they don't have one. Yes, I had no explanation of why their website is falsely advertising their daily specials. He said ever since 2020 nothing is correct on the website. While we were there, other people came in to listen to live music and found out it was all misleading.

Jon B.

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant! And an excellent place to take a date! The ambiance was awesome!

Chris M.

Yelp
Prices are absolutely insane. Get a canned shitty seltzer for $12. Word word word it gets busy and crowded. Idk prob ain't worth it

Naoise D.

Yelp
We threw my husbands 60th bday at the Blue Beet. Rented out the rooftop patio and I was blown away with how great it all turned out. Coming from out of town I had never been there and Leah helped me make sure everything went to plan. The rooftop was super cool, private spot for surprise and they set it up with everything I requested, ordered special champagne for event, we had our own bartender up there and the food was amazing. Everyone, literally everyone said the their dish was great for sit down dinner most had salmon and steak. The service was great the bartender, Jen and manager JJ super cool. 10/10. The vibe is old-school, hidden gem, great service and food...throw your next party here!

Angie G.

Yelp
Came here for celebratory after event drinks, love that it has 3 floors and the 3rd floor as indoor and rooftop seating. Tried the nachos, nothing special, could have used salsa or jalapeños to spice it up. Staff is awesome even when our large group converged on them midday on a weekend.

Preston D.

Yelp
Great vibe, great live band, great drinks, great service minus one of the bartenders last night, who was a complete prick. Maybe his dog died before he went to work. Not sure what his deal was. But everything else was awesome.

Don P.

Yelp
This is a very unique place. On the outside it looks like a dive bar but they have a pretty good menu. There are three different levels of limited seating. Good music playing. They pride themselves on the great food. I had to blue burger and it was excellent. Nice blue cheese type sauce on it. Also had the onion rings which were very good. Prior to the meal I enjoyed a nice cup of clam chowder. The wife had a barbecue burger that she really enjoyed as well as mozzarella sticks. Everyone from the bartenders to the guy checking ID to get in were extremely polite and very friendly. This was our first time ever going here out of the many years we have come to Newport. We will definitely be back again.

Eric S.

Yelp
Blue Beet is a great spot to grab a drink on a Friday night without the typical Newport crowd you'll get at other local spots like Stag. Low key this is a sleeper pick spot for one of the best burgers in Newport - and the mac and cheese options are worth trying!

Foodie F.

Yelp
Hey what can we say about this place. They got live music on several days and the food is pretty good. Tonight is Monday night piano night One of my girlfriends lost her jacket on a packed Friday night. Big John the bar manager impressively pulled out his flashlight and cleared an entire crowd of people with his flashlight and found it. Pretty bad ass if you ask me. And John the entry official is a gentleman and a scholar when it comes to providing a fun and safe environment. Stephanie at the bar is an Angel by definition. Overall a good time, gets packed after 10 pm so have patience.

Marley P.

Yelp
My friends and I were on vacation in the area and stumbled across the blue beet. The bouncer said we can hang out for an hour until closing time. When the first person in our group showed her ID, he looked at it, and said "no I'm not dealing with any bullshit tonight". We initially thought he was joking, but he said "I don't mess around with fake ID's". We are all visiting from Hawaii, and are all over 21 so there shouldn't have been an issue, yet he denied entry. All because he thought we weren't from Hawaii and that we were using fakes. SO stupid.

Laura V.

Yelp
Came here from out of town. 1. Rude bartender questioning my ID by my color 2. Waiter making a comment that bartender has to check ID's again ? 3. Kids running around everywhere including a baby behind the bar. Food was great but "supposedly" forgot my husband order. Will not be coming here again.

Kat K.

Yelp
Nice upper deck.. food and service are ok.. Inside smells like mold. Not a place I would frequent

Lauren M.

Yelp
Not the vibe. If you're a woman do NOT come here. Last night I was sexually assaulted there and I told the staff multiple times and they kicked me out and let him stay. As a woman that was the worst most unsafe experience and the fact that multiple staff members handled it so poorly really speaks volume to the work place. Do not go here.

Natalie R.

Yelp
The best bar in Newport. Great food and great service. If you don't like it, go to Cassidy's they'll take real good care of you.

Kim H.

Yelp
Blue Beet has some of the best bartenders in Newport Beach. They know their drinks and even during Covid, they do their best to keep the customers happy. I've also eaten here a few times and everything I've tried has been delicious. Their carne asada fries are to die for. It's one of the only roof tops in Newport Beach with a great view of the ocean, and of course the sunset. They also have live music, in normal situations it's on the first floor, and depending on the night the dance floor will get super packed.

Gloria J.

Yelp
Lea was right! The fries are amazing!!! I had the sliders and i was in heaven! The staff is so nice and the food was yummy :) if you want a place to chill, eat, and listen to music, come to The Blue Beet!

Jeff L.

Yelp
Cool rooftop and that's about it. Drinks are way over priced. $10 for a cup of beer? Barely 12 ounces. Geez, I get it's Newport but no other bar is that expensive and if they are the beer is larger and the place is nicer

roberta b.

Yelp
Drinks are fair but the upstairs outdoor dining is a joke! Needs repair and frankly run down! Quarreling downstairs with a client wasn't the best atmosphere! Go at night if at anytime! It will cover the deterioration of this once nice restaurant!

Carissa F.

Yelp
The drinks were strong and the live music was great! Will definitely be back next time I'm in town!

Troy M.

Yelp
Was here for St. Patty's day...2022 Nick, the bar tender made us two of the shittyest Old Fashion drinks I've ever had. Confirmed by others. This place has gone way down in the ranks and is definitely a place to avoid. Locals get the preferred treatment and the rest get crap. AVOID! EAT SHIT NICK.

Glen N.

Yelp
Blue. Beet. Bears. Battlestar Galactica. 12 people will get that.

Christine N.

Yelp
Saw a band play here a couple of years ago. It's an intimate venue with good acoustics :)

Brian Z.

Yelp
I celebrated my 50th birthday there with several of my family and friends the bartender was amazing he took care of us very quickly. some of my party ate food as well in which they all said that they loved what they ordered. the very next day I went back because a friend potentially lost sunglasses there, I ended up having the barbecue burger with fries and wow it was excellent.

Brian E.

Yelp
Ok! Loved this place for a bit! Really! all the sudden DICK bouncer was shoving me out the door because my wife snapped a pic with him.

Stacey M.

Yelp
We love the staff here! Jen is so sweet! And who can forget the boys?!? JJ and Nick are amazing too. 5 stars for sure

AJ M.

Yelp
Every time I go there from the moment I enter till the end great service Nick, Paul, Stephanie and JJ are the best by far. The drinks are great priced and good quality not to mention that they don't skimp on the alcohol the food is bomb as well I think we've ordered every appetizer there and I have nothing bad to say about any of the it, it comes out hot and delicious 5/5 in my book highly encourage going there

Yelp
PLEASE READ! I'm here writing about an incident that happened about a week ago now. It was last Friday night 1/18 and I had gone out to a nice Italian dinner with some girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. Afterwards we headed down to the bars and had been to one prior before ending the night at Blue Beet. Me along with a group of 6 or 7 people showed up to Blue Beet, walking in after other groups. The line was flowing and I was the 2nd to last person to walk in out of my group (one friend still waiting behind me). I hand the bouncer my ID and expect to just walk in after my friends, but then he asks me to pay a fee. I was thrown off and confused because none of the people in front of me had to pay. But before calling the bouncer out I decided to fact check and called my friends who were just let in if they had to pay, which they replied "no". Then just for the heck of it I had my one friend standing behind me hand him her ID, and what do you know, he said she wouldn't have to pay either. I stood there shocked as I asked him what his reasoning was for making me pay a fee but not a single people in front or behind me had to. He had no answer. Mind you, this was not my first time at this bar and me and my family have been Newport natives since about the 50's. I am a woman of color so you can take that as you will and can even scroll through reviews to see that I am not the first one this kind of thing has happened to. Frustrated, I ask to speak to a manger followed by me stepping to the side to try to get around him. He then shoves me back which gets me even more upset. I shove back obviously and tell him that he can't put his hands on me. He was unnecessarily aggressive and started to grab me to bring me to the door. He had no right to lay a single finger on me and what he should have done is gotten the manager like I asked. But instead he decided to get physical. For about 30-40 min my friends tried to get a manager outside to speak to me but none of them showed that they cared, and after not being attended to I decided to leave. This is a picture of my arm which shows how aggressive this bouncer was on me. Attached is also a legal statement saying that bouncers DO NOT have the same rights as security or police. They also DO NOT have the right to physically remove a person. My peers and myself reached out to Blue Beet, to try to get the name of the bouncer. Our first call we supposedly were speaking to the female general manager, who claimed she would return our call within the day with the information we wanted. (Though to not know your bouncers names on the spot is a little bizarre to me). We received no phone call back and decided to call back 2 days later, who we then spoke to a female employee who told us she would have her male general manager call us back around 8pm when he got in. Yet again we got no phone call back. I've never felt so defeated, embarrassed and frustrated in my life. The staff as well as the managers did not care, did not look into the situation and lied to us just to get us off their backs. I will never go back there but that won't affect them at all. I just hope people read this and no what kind of people are running that place and where their priorities stand. And for anyone that this has happened to there, know you're not the only one. DO BETTER BLUE BEET.

Jesse R.

Yelp
LIVE MUSIC!!! This place is hidden but the live band is great. I came on a Sunday and it's a great place for a low key date, or relaxing evening. Service: the bartenders are friendly and make the drinks pretty strong. I didn't have to call him when I need something because they came to me Bathroom: the bathrooms were average. They don't smell and they look ok. It's a little small but at lease they have men and women separate. And the men's is not disgusting like it is a Sharkeez Bar. Food: the food is average price. I got a bacon avocado burger and it cost 13 dollars.

Jesus H.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night around 11:30 PM or so for a birthday. I had never heard of this place, even though I lived in the OC for a few years, and I am pleasantly surprised by it. In Friday's there is a $5 cover charge, which won't break the bank, and I would say it was well worth it. This place has 3 levels and they have a cover band playing live music. The band is on the first floor, there are TVs and couches on the second floor, and lastly a cash only bar on the third with an accompanying smoking patio. Even for a Friday night it never once felt over crowded how some bars can get on the weekends. Besides the great music, which I really enjoyed, the drinks were well priced, about $9 a mixed drink and were quite strong. All-in-all this place was great and loved that it's right by Seaside bakery.

Boss L.

Yelp
Breezy, oceanfront, bar tender is cool, they don't let in 10 thousand people to where you can't move, the beer is ice cold and the food is fire. Most of all, this place is CONSISTENT. Literally had anything bad here.

Aaron M.

Yelp
We went looking for a place to grub out on an impromptu beach day. Some places aren't family compatible in this area, but the folks at The Blue Beet invited us right in. The people are super cool and the food is surprisingly good. I'll remember this joint when we come back.

Brian L.

Yelp
Not a fan. Not a clean place. Each waitress I encountered didn't seem like they wanted to be there. In which case I say, "don't be there". Management might want to develop a clear culture and then hire & train based on that culture...........unless they already do

Tanya R.

Yelp
Great place to chill on a rooftop after relaxing on the beach. We came in on a Friday around 4pm, just in time for their happy hour. As we walked in, the place seemed closed so we had to ask to make sure it was open. Everyone was upstairs on the rooftop so the waitress was the only one working and was running up and down the stairs. SERVICE (5/5): Even though she was the only one working, she made sure everyone was taken care of! She must be tired of running up and down 2 flights of stairs all the time! POPCORN SHRIMP (4/5): It had a good amount of shrimp! The ratio between the batter and shrimp was perfect, wasn't too bready or shrimpy. The cocktail sauce was just okay, but I preferred it with ketchup. SWEET POTATO FRIES (4/5): I don't think this is on the happy hour menu, but my sister ordered it anyways. I'm not a huge fan of sweet potato, but this was pretty good! It wasn't too thick where you could taste of sweet potato was overwhelming. I wish it could have been salted a bit more, but with the ranch, it was perfect. Didn't come out oily.

Jessica L.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place & are so glad we did! It's haunted & if you're lucky, Dollar Dolly will say "hi" while you're in the ladies room! She's rather playful The food was great & Fez provided great beer suggestions as well as awesome service! The onion rings & quesadilla were great starters.. they have REAL ranch dressing & home made guac! We will be back again... and again... and again!

Andrea B.

Yelp
The only reason I'm writing a review is because Paul is so amazing. The amount of people he brings in and the hard work that he does, the kindness that he gives stands out compared to every other coworker at this establishment. If the owner knew the way things were run around here they would promote him and give him more responsibilities ...put him in charge! The way he promotes and the way he keeps people around is unmatched.

Amy O.

Yelp
Oh, Blue Beet. So many memories! If you want to go to a fun bar with personality in the heart of Newport, try Blue Beat. Why? Because it NEVER lets me down each time I come. There was a band playing 80's one time then another time they were playing 90's punk. I love it! Drinks are cheap and the place is grungy, what else do you want from the Newport scene? :) Will I come back? Of course! I'm well overdue.

Joe M.

Yelp
Here to watch Penn State play Saturday morning. This is Penn State game location. The breakfast burrito was excellent as was the breakfast sandwich. The tater tots were fantastic. Service was excellent considering one server took care of everyone on roof level. You can watch tv and see the ocean. There are three levels in the restaurant.

Robby R.

Yelp
I have been to The Blue Beet several times mostly to watch a friend play guitar. I will not be coming back and will do my best to spread the word about this place. The "bouncer/waiter" is an over sensitive loser who tried his hardest to start a fight with me twice. Luckily for him I wasn't in the mood and didn't want to ruin the night for my friends. The service was horrible. We waited 20 minutes to order drinks and then the waitress dropped off menus and told us we had to order food. She didn't come back for another 30 minutes. I was planning on having dinner but after the drama and seeing how filthy dirty the restroom was I opted to starve. Newport is full of options and great places for food and entertainment. Do yourself a favor and skip over this mud puddle.

Emily B.

Yelp
This bar sounded really great. But, right as I walk in I was greeted with so much disrespect. The bar vibe was so off. The bartender yelled at us and didn't even try to be accommodating or helpful AT ALL!!! He basically looked at us and talked to us like we were idiot and treated is like garbage. And he made awful drinks. Don't recommend

Liz G.

Yelp
Great place to watch football on the weekends! Good: Mac and cheese, flatbreads, blue beet salad

Monica L.

Yelp
Bar food was actually pretty darn good! Had a side salad and the vegetable skewers. Very flavorful. The atmosphere was friendly and staff was as well. Good little vibe. Have been here before but never had any food here. Casual dress makes it work for those who just want to drop in without dressing up.

Jake R.

Yelp
I love blue beet on Saturday nights and I will even admit that nothing on the peninsula compares but if you don't meet their taste of the night they won't let you in. Every bar at Newport let's people in until 1 am... blue beet decided to be the outlier because they didn't "feel" like letting people in. The bouncer said "I want to go home". That doesn't sound like a bar I want to go too and I'm glad we left. If it's at the end of the night and it's between blue beet and another bar I recommend another bar!

Courtney O.

Yelp
LIVE MUSIC. The Blue Beet is set up with a small stage on the first floor near a stretch bar. On the second floor, you can see the stage and hear music from table seating. There's also a cash bar located on this floor. Last, there's a patio area for outdoor hang outs. The Blue Beet has great live music! On a night we were there, we heard from a great rock band. Awesome covers. My only critique is that they were really aggressive with wanting to get tips even specifying how much money they needed in tips to play certain songs. Awkward. Cover was $10 and drinks averaged around $7-8. I liked the place. The ground floor had a slightly divey feel but the music made for a fun night!

Brenda L.

Yelp
This Bar has a weird set up. It has 2 stories and a balcony. Down stairs I feel like there's no space to watch the live Band. It is what is it thoo just a bar.
