St-Laurent Bar Blue Dog Motel Receives an OQLF Notice About Its Facebook Page | Eater Montreal
"A St-Laurent Boulevard bar and barber shop, Blue Dog Motel has been ordered to remain closed for just over a month during the omicron wave, yet on January 21, 2022 it received a notice of complaint from the Office Québécois de la Langue Française (OQLF) about content posted to its commercial Facebook account and its business name — the agency says French must appear at least as prominently as any other language. I spoke with owner Raphael Kerwin, who said, "It’s pretty poor timing. We’re closed. We can’t operate, and you’re asking me to do all this stuff?" and noted the social media page only targets "like a thousand people"; he also described financial strain from repeated closures, layoffs, inability to offer takeout without a kitchen permit, and supply problems caused by a labour dispute at the SAQ. Kerwin told the OQLF he could not address the issue until COVID-19 restrictions lift, and the agency agreed to defer action; OQLF spokesperson Chantal Bouchard confirmed that the charter requires commercial publications to be in French (though other languages may also appear) and said the agency offers support to help businesses comply. This is not Blue Dog’s first run-in with the OQLF: in 2014 the agency issued a notice about signage but backtracked when it learned the storefront had painted the French descriptors "Bar/Barbier." - Valerie Silva
I went in with a friend for New Year’s Eve and there was a drag show happening. Fantastic show, great drinks (I suggest getting pitcher of the sex on the beach) and very nice staff.

Kickass dive bar. Cheap drinks. Gets insanely crowded later at night so might be more strategic as a pre drink spot if the vibe isn't yours. Great tunes & an interesting crowd.

Good show, nice venue, drinks are... at a price.
Reasonable entry fee, great crowd.
Only thing stopping me from rating 5 stars is because they have so many candles it actually takes effort not to set your clothes on fire. Its happened to me twice.

Dan is the best barber I ever had. He’s been cutting my hair for five years. Consistent great haircuts and always easy conversation. Great customer service. Easy online reservations (some site called Resurva). Unusually, he is great at both trimmer (fades) and scissors. I recommend him without hesitation.

They wanted to take away a bottle that I PAID FOR when I was leaving the bar. They also refused to give us lemons for the drink because a friend of mine didn't give a tip, so basically they are going to be nice with you only if you tip. The service is not good for the prices but if you keep that in mind you can have a good time.

Lots of local artists. Good vibe. Prices are alright. People are very nice, enjoy the bartenders. The DJs make the place what it is. Stay away from the bathrooms.

This is a grimy college bar, so I’m keeping that in mind when rating the experience. DJ spun pop and hip hop and later we watched a local rapper perform. The bathrooms are not the cleanest and the bartenders can be a little pushy with tips. Still had a fun night though!

I've enjoyed Rafskino and other underground rap here in 2023, now affordably grooving to Vibes Machine classic Jamaican roots and dancehall on thirsty Thursdays in 2024.
